Book Description
Take two parts biography, one part autobiography, one part mathematics, one part philosophy and one-half part fantasy. Mix well, and arrive at a picture of the non-technical side of one mathematician's career.
Philip J. Davis has won numerous awards for his scientific writing, among them the National Book Award. Mathematical Encounters of the Second Kind is a joyful memoir of the author's encounters, some actual and some fictional, with a number of mathematicians and historical figures. For instance, few people know that Napoleon Bonaparte of France, Lord Rothschild of England, and Queen Hortense of the Netherlands had in common an interest in mathematical talent. Few still know the influence that interest had on their lives and on the lives of others of their respective times. And only Davis knows that, were it not for one of them, he might never have developed the interest in mathematics that has led him to a life of creating and applying mathematics and writing about if for his peers, his students, and a wide range of intellectually curious readers.
Davis' message is that an interest in mathematics can, like any activity of the human mind, bring people into contact with each other over centuries, over oceans, and over cultural separations. He came to realize that mathematics goes beyond the scientific and technological needs of society, and can serve as a social connection among people of divers origins, abilities, and stations in life. He turns, in his correspondence and travels, some surprising corners, sharing with us his encounters with a world of academics, politicians, writers, and even spies, all connected through some of the simplest, yet most profound ideas in mathematics.
What emerges is an entertaining and informative portrayal of an occupation that is not well understood or is misconceived by the rest of the world. The general reader will find that little mathematical knowledge is required to join and to enjoy the commentary and the fun of the encounters.
Book Description
This friendly little book acknowledges kids' fears and makes them aware of things they need in order to feel safe in different situations. They learn, for instance, to look both ways when crossing a road, to wear special clothing for sports, to know their parents' names, phone number, and emergency numbers, and many other details. A First Look At
is an easy-to-understand series of books for younger children. Each title explores emotional issues and discusses the questions such difficulties invariably raise among kids of preschool through early school age. Written by a psychotherapist and child counselor, each title promotes positive interaction among children, parents, and teachers. The books are written in simple, direct language that makes sense to younger kids. Each title also features a guide for parents on how to use the book, a glossary, suggested additional reading, and a list of resources. There are attractive full-color illustrations on every page. (Ages 4-7)
Customer Reviews:
Safety Book - very good.......2007-07-19
This book is excellent. It helps teach kids what to do in certain uncomfortable situations without making them scared. My 4 1/2 year old loves it.
Smart not scared.......2006-02-10
This book is great for normalizing personal safety. It works personal safety in with the usual "hold hands when crossing the street" type messages. The thing I love most about this book is that it addresses intuition the one thing that can really help keep kids safe. It DOESN'T promote the message that only strangers hurt you which is of vital importance. Kids learn best by repitition and this book lets you repeat information using colorful well done illustrations (notice the man bothering the little girl does not 'look' scary). It's a terrific tool and I highly recommend it as a way to introduce personal safety to young children.
Great for young children - a must have!.......2005-06-21
I would recommend this book to every parent with a young child. It covers lots of different kinds of safety, including that no one should touch you where your bathing suit covers. And stranger danger. There's nothing too scary for a small child, unlike some other "lesson" books I've bought, like a lesson book I bought on anger by Adolph Moser which said some people get so mad they kill. I didn't have to edit out anything in this book.

Coming Back for More.......2004-12-04
I love this little book. I made the Butternut Squash Souffle and Cranberry Salad for Thanksgiving and they were wonderful. NO ONE
knew they were not made with sugar. I plan on taking the Frosted Pumpkin Bars to my Christmas cookie exchange to share next week -and am ordering a few copies to give as gifts to some of my other
friends looking to cut sugar and carbs in a healthful way.
PS NO problem with the printing in my copy - I'd request a new one
Disappointed.......2004-12-02
I recently received "50 Splenda Recipes" By Marlene Koch and was very disappointed. As I began reviewing the recipes I realized that the ingredient amounts had been cut off. As anyone knows, a recipe is no good without the amounts. My husband was recently diagnosed with diabetes and this book was important to us. Thanks for reading this review. Debra Bennett

REALLY HELPFUL!.......2000-04-12
I think that if you want to get a rabbit, you should read this book because it tells you about rabbits so you know how many responsibilities there are in taking care of rabbits. The other books about pets are also very helpful.

Not Enough Information.......2001-08-13
Too little informaton. Does not discuss any type of information on guinea pig diseass, how to bath your pig, or buying the perfect cage. A quick read, not worth the price I paid for it.
Too brief..........2000-07-28
Those of you who want to learn about guinea pigs and how to care for them in detail, I'm afraid that this book is not suitable for you. The contents are too brief. Despite that, the pictures are very clear (and there are lots of them!) I feel that this book will be perfect for young children who are learning to care for their cavies as the language is simple to understand.
All About Your Guinea Pig -A easy to understand Resource.......2000-04-29
All About Your Guinea Pig is an excellent resource for the new Guinea Pig Owner. The information on caring for your new pet is clear and concise. There are excellent Photos on sexing your Guinea Pig. This Resource covers care and feeding, breeds, the sex of your Guinea Pig and much more

Book Description
Over half the women in the U.S. wear a size 14 or larger, yet commercial patterns seldom come in plus sizes. Designer patterns are rarely available above a size 12. At the same time, it's often hard for women who wear larger sizes to buy attractive clothes, so many sew their own. Sewing for Plus Sizes is the first book to help home sewers who wear size 14 or larger make and adapt patterns and develop techniques for adapting designs for larger sizes. Designed to meet the needs of the basic sewer, Sewing for Plus Sizes guides the reader through such important steps as selecting designs, colors, and fabrics that will enhance their plus-size figures. It also shows how to adjust commercial patterns to fit unique dimensions and accommodate figure variations common to larger women. The author (herself a plus-size woman) writes in an upbeat, conversational tone that is as supportive as it is instructive. Stylish fashion photos of plus-size models wearing attractive clothing provide inspiration. Plus-size women will find this book a unique and invaluable resource.

Book Description
One of the most fundamental human urges is to form a pair. Despite many tendencies that threaten traditional marriage and even make committed cohabitation problematic, very few people live through adulthood without at least one lengthy relationship, and up to ninety percent of Americans marry at least once in their lives. This pioneering volume draws attention to issues that question the unspoken traditional practices underlying coupling in America. In it, some of today's most innovative feminist scholars consider the dramatic changes couples have experienced over the past fifty years, such as the proliferation of divorce, the increase in ethnically-mixed relationships, the preponderance of older couples, and the new visibility of same-sex unions.
Approaching their subject from a range of disciplines, the authors explore the couple as an enduring paradigm for human relationships, despite the changes in ideology and practice that couples have experienced over time. The essays delve into such subjects as the historical roots of modern marriage, the recent phenomenon of lesbian and gay commitment ceremonies, the home as a workplace and a place of refuge, and the stresses that turn a happy marriage into an unhappy one. One chapter explodes the myth that feminists are responsible for the high incidence of divorce, while another focuses on the financial worth of the wife after the demise of a long-standing marriage.
Taken together, these essays impart a deep and complex picture of the challenges facing couples in our time. The vital and engaging narratives show that however anxious our society may be in the face of dissolving marriages and dysfunctional families, couples will continue to form the bedrock of American society in the twenty-first century.

The truth about heroes is in this book.......2000-11-06
I read this book this past week and I was drawn to finish it. It was not a high polish, perfectly worded book, but that it what I loved about it. It was written by a regular person about genuine and regular people. The book made me cry and feel shame about the way I have lived my life. When you read about grown men marching who have no shoes, I guess it really does not matter if I have Nikes or a regular store brand.I believe it has changed my life in some ways. He spoke of men being beaten until they begged for death, which was the only mercy they saw in their whole existence inside the prison camp- I cried again. It was a beautifully written book and I believe all people should read this.It talks of fear and love and mercy and bravery and laughter too. I highly recommend this book. If we do not remind ourselves of what we have and why we have it and remember the sacrifices that braver people than I have made- perhaps history will be doomed to repeat itself. I was told not long ago that the Doctor Hibbs passed away a few weeks ago, he was an honorable man. In my deepest heart, I salute him and am proud to have read this book.-
Great account of WW2 American Pow's.......1999-02-16
This book is a great way to learn about the horrors that American men went through in the Philippines during World War II. It is truely remarkable that a person could live through what the author lived through, and after the war was over, come back to the states and lead a very productive life. The book would be great for anyone interested in WW2 or anyone who wants to appreciate more what our servicemen and women did for our country.
