Although this book is aimed at parents, it is a quick and easy tool for teachers as well. I have seen several ideas that can be used in my kindergarten classroom and shared with parents to use at home. The book also covers severl levels from beginning spellers to higher levels.

If you want your child to win the national spelling bee this probably isnt the book you need but if you want simple explanations of fairly hard spellings this is a great book. You get lists of words with tricky sounds in them and a lot of word families and its all explained in easy terms. I have taught my child many of the lists and will keep going.

In Sicily they eat ice cream for breakfast. That fact alone was enough to convince Victoria Granof that she had to go there. Sweet Sicily: The Story of an Island and Her Pastries is the result of a number of Granof's visits to Sicily, during which she confesses she ate more sweets than she ever thought possible. With plenty of humor and great respect, Granof shares what she learned from her experiences in Sicily and the friends she made there. Few of these sweets are fancy, and all are very traditional. Light and crispy Sweet Ricotta Turnovers from the Bar di Noto in Piana degli Albanesi and Chewy Pistachio Cookies shared by Giuseppe Chemi of Pasticceria Etna in Taormina are Sicily personified. All 106 of the recipes, such as the elegant little Engagement Cookies filled with almonds and cinnamon and honey-drenched Rice Fritters, call for the same ingredients the Sicilians have used for centuries. Learn to make homemade ricotta cheese and you won't believe how good your cannoli can be. --Leora Y. Bloom

      Book Description

      There's nothing subtle about Sicily.

From the towering cake known as the Triumph of Gluttony to the pert cherry-topped pastries called Virgin's Breasts to puckery, palate-tingling ices made from the island's luscious lemons and tangerines, Sicily is known for its audacious -- and delicious -- desserts. Pastry chef and food stylist Victoria Granof has traveled throughout Sicily learning sweet secrets and local lore from the island's pastry chefs and home bakers, and the result is Sweet Sicily, a lushly photographed exploration of authentic Sicilian pastry-making.

For more than two thousand years, Sicily has been coveted for its fertile land and unique location in the Mediterranean. The Greeks, Romans, Normans, Austrians, French, Bourbons, and Saracens have all landed on its shores, and in turn left their imprints on its food. Granof's magical tour takes us to Modica, where Franco and Pierpaolo Ruta of the Antica Dolceria Bonajuto create chocolate pastries using a five-hundred-year-old recipe that originated with the island's Bourbon conquerors, and to the Baroque town of Noto, where master pastry chef Corrado uses jasmine blossoms planted by Saracens more than a thousand years ago to flavor his jasmine gelato. Granof goes on a quest to find the most authentic ingredients and recipes, including delectable homemade ricotta made from the milk of sheep that graze on fragrant herbs and pistachios that grow in the shadow of Mount Etna, the island's still active volcano.

In Sicily, every holiday and festival has its proper sweet accompaniment: marzipan lambs at Easter, honeyed pastry fritters at Christmas, crunchy, clove-scented cookies called "bones of the dead" for All Soul's Day. Granof explores these customs and festivals, gathering heirloom recipes, along with local anecdotes and advice. In addition to sweets that are already familiar to Americans, such as cannoli, cassata, and lemon ice, she introduces us to dozens of delectable pastries, confections, and cookies that are destined to become favorites as well.

With a guide to festivals and pastry shops throughout the island, and nearly one hundred recipes formulated for use in American kitchens, Sweet Sicily is an unforgettable exploration of the desserts of the world's most beguiling island.

3 out of 5 stars Great stories and nice pictures.......2005-12-24

Here I am. It's Dec 23. I'm trying to make some pastries for Christmas eve dinner. I just found out the hard way that the recipe for "Pasta Frolla", is garbage. 'Garbage' is not the word I would normally choose given my level of anger and frustration, but I'd like the review to stand so others know not to follow in my footsteps. If Hurricaneman can make it following her recipe, I bow to his superior skillz.

Her recipe calls for 5 cups flour to 1 cup butter. All the recipes I find in a brief online search have a ratio much closer to 3:1. I didn't even finish adding all the flour before my "soft dough" was a bowl of fine powder.

Being full blooded Sicilian myself, I have a feeling that these bakers who she "sweet talked" gave her bogus recipes just to get this woman out of her hair. I know that's what I'd do and I know plenty of Sicilians who would resort to similar tactics to protect their trade secrets. :-)

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book and A Must-Have .......2005-03-15

I can tell you from experience that this cookbook is much more than just a cookbook. It's a manual for creating authentic Sicilian pastries and desserts. I learned many guarded secrets working for an Italian Bakery in my youth, and can say that this book should have never been published. Now all the secrets are out.

Some reviewers have complained of typos in the book. If there are any typos, I believe contacting the publisher and author could easily clear the air and correct any mistakes. The author went through a lot of trouble flattering her interviewers and humbling herself before others to obtain these recipes, I'm sure she would want purchasers of her book to be successful creating these masterpieces. She even went so far as to list suppliers for hard to find items. Personally, I've noticed NO TYPOS!

Buy this book, you'll never put it down.

1 out of 5 stars Not so Sweet.......2003-12-10

The history in this book is wonderful. However, the recipes are very inconsistent. Missing ingredients, etc. make it impossible to use this cookbook. I tried twice to make the Little Tea Cookies (pg.70) with no success. The dough would never come together (obviously some ingredient is missing).

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book.......2003-02-27

This is a fantastic book! The recipes are great and the photography is really beautiful. The history of the island is so fascinating and is covered well in this book. It is a nice set up to the recipes... its wonderful to get some background on why Sicilian pastries are the way they are. I also enjoyed learning which pastries are associated with religious observences. This book also brought back great memories. The Ricotta Turnovers in the book are very similar to the "Cassateddi" that my Sicilian grandmother loves. The author does an excellent job of providing mail order resources for some hard to get ingredients and provides infomation on how to make a reasonable approximation of other components yourself. (like Fresh Ricotta) I would also like to clear up a misconception. Two previous reviewers indicated that there was a typo on the Chewy Pistachio cookie recipe just because flour was not listed. It is NOT an ingredient in the cookie. If you read further and pay attention to the instructions, flour is not called for. Not every cookie has flour and not every cookie is made like Americans make things. As for the person who said that the picture showed flour... rest assured, the cookie is dusted with powdered sugar which is in the recipe (and much tastier than dusting it with flour). No typo there, just a different (and delicious)type of cookie.

      5 out of 5 stars A beautiful book.......2003-01-11

This is a wonderful book to enjoy and to give as a gift. This pictures are lovely. The history included makes it all that much more interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Owl's and the Web of Life.......2007-09-16

A beautifully illustrated non-fiction story of the owl's life as we learn about his ways of feeding, where he lives, finding a mate, and exists during the different seasons of the year. I used this as a part of an integrated science lesson. The idea for this lesson is from "Picture Perfect Science" which is an excellent resource using books such as this one to teach elementary science.

        Barn Owl (Animal Lives)

4 out of 5 stars Great first book about owls.......2005-09-08

The barn owl is certainly a unique species, and is an excellent subject for a book meant to introduce young children to the world of owls, and birds in general. The illustrations are excellent, and the text for the most part is easy to read. The occasional advanced word is encountered, but this is hardly a problem. Overall, an excellent book.

3 out of 5 stars A picturebook with factual information........2000-09-22

Animal Lives: The Barn Owl is a picturebook with factual data, a genre I am generally pleased with. Given the picturebook format, I felt that some of the vocabulary choices would be very difficult for younger or struggling readers, i.e. superefficient sense of hearing, perilous flight. That said, the information about barn owls is well presented and researched, the illustrations are accurate and well-done, and the book includes resources and information about conservation. The author follows one barn owl pair as they raise their first brood of young-from courtship to leaving the nest. A nice insight into the lives of the owls.

          Book Description

When seen hunting over a meadow, barn owls have an ethereal grace and beauty that can be matched by no other bird. The barn owl has an almost global distribution and has lived in close proximity to humans since settlement and farming created the forest clearings needed for hunting and places in which to nest. However, in many countries, barn owl numbers are falling rapidly. This book explores the relationships between barn owls and their prey worldwide, and demonstrates how an understanding of such relationships can help in the conservation of the species. In this comprehensive account, Iain Taylor describes the biology and ecology of this species, including the factors affecting breeding success, and causes of mortality affecting the final recruitment of new birds into the population. He concludes by suggesting ways in which we can manage and conserve this beautiful bird for the future.

This is an absolutely wonderful story about an an encounter in a barn with a precarious skunk and an owl. It has beautiful black and white watercolor type illustrations by John Schoenherr. The Skunk does get way and the Owl has to leave The Barn hungry. A great book for young and old!

"What We Can't Tell You : Teenagers Talk to the Adults in Their Lives" is a great book! I was sent a proof to read and found that the information it holds is key to improving communication between parents and their children.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful all around.......2005-04-08

I was sent a proof copy of this book. I was not really going to read it until my mother read it and said something to me. I found the title to be most interesting and once I had read it, I found the book to be very helpful. I never really knew there were other kids out there like me. It opened a lot of topics for me and my parents to discuss. This book hit on topics that we go though and topics that are not an issue for us. I would suggest if you have teenagers in the house that you read this. For it was help in ways that it said it would be and in ways unstated. I found it helpful just to know that there are other kids going through the same things I am. But also that I have it pretty good compared to others.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting book does open conversations.......2005-04-08

I was sent a proof copy of this book for review. At first I was skeptical because most of the teenagers interviewed seem to have lived a life far different from my children. We are part of the "minority" of single nuclear unbroken families. Our children are not plagued by a lot of the problems described in this book. However, two of my teenagers were captivated by the title of the book when they saw me reading it, and proceeded to tell me what they thought I should know about their thinking. The book itself was not relevant to our lives, but it did, as promised, start a conversation between myself and my teens that was enlightening and made for a wonderful evening together.

Helpfulness aside, it was well-written and very interesting to read even without the conversational side-effects.

                            Book Description

At the end of the nineteenth century, the art worlds of Paris and Boston saw the rise to prominence of American portrait painter Anna Klumpke (1856-1942). This first detailed study of Klumpke, who is best known for her portraits and biography of her companion, renowned French artist Rosa Bonheur, traces her remarkable life and career against the backdrop of fin-de-sicle culture.

Drawing on a wide spectrum of sources from art history to psychology, Britta Dwyer's account goes beyond traditional biography by addressing such themes as the choices available to women in the arts, the social and artistic obstacles faced by women artists in the male-dominated art community, female relationships, and the importance of women's patronage.

Dwyer begins by describing how Klumpke's formative years were shaped by her career-oriented mother and sisters and other American women artists living in Paris. She then discusses Klumpke's growing reputation as a Salon exhibitor, recounts her years in Boston, and relates the dramatic turn in Klumpke's life when she was invited in 1898 to paint the portrait of Rosa Bonheur. Dwyer provides new evidence of the meaningful and romantic partnership between these two creative women-a relationship that ended abruptly with Bonheur's death a year after they met.

Anna Klumpke's private and professional journey reflects the controversial and complex concerns for women of her era and sheds light on issues that remain pressing for women of today. This captivating biography offers an intriguing case study of turn-of-the century culture and faithfully recovers one woman's place in the context of her times.

There is general agreement today that traditional approaches to immigration admissions in the major receiving countries of the West have serious shortcomings either in concept or implementation, or at times in both. These essays, all written by leading immigration experts, consider the philosophical and moral constraints on immigration law and policy, the basic elements of a comprehensive migration policy, and specific policy areas, including family reunification and asylum. Taken together, these perspectives represent a fresh, comparative look at some of the most urgent issues in this pivotal area of law and policy.

                                  Book Description

This series, published in association with the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, focuses on the immigration and refugee issues faced in particular by the U.S. and German governments. American and German scholars - lawyers, sociologists, historians, political scientists, demographers, economists, and political philosophers - have come together to examine the different approaches of the two countries from historical and contemporary perspectives as well as their policy options. Some of the most pressing questions in immigration law and policy today concern the problem of immigration controls. How are immigration laws administered, and how are they enforced against those who enter and remain in a receiving country without legal permission? Comparing the United States and Germany, two of the four extended essays in this volume concern enforcement; the other two address techniques for managing high volume asylum systems in both countries.

This book is a docu-fiction which depicts the experience of Japanese-Americans in concentration camps during world war II. It shows the family structure and also the psychology impacts later on. Very well written and enjoyable.
