This is the Second Edition of THE QUACK CORPS. It is the story of a Marine's War - Pearl Harbor to Okinawa. A fast moving narrative with hundreds of battle, humorous and other tales and is an historically accurate WWII bio beginning with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, where he was serving in the Marine Detachment, USS PENNSYLVANIA. After repairs and installation of new anti-aircraft guns in San Franciso, the ship returned to Pearl Harbor in August, 1942. In September, a transfer to USS NEW MEXICO, as senior Marine NCO with Admiral Pye's Flag meant a South Pacific cruise of several months. The ship returned to Pearl Harbor, March 1943, and he became a beach Marine with short hitches at the Marine Barracks, Navy Yard, Pearl Harbor and with the 1st Defense Battalion on Palmyra Island. After returning to the US in late August, he returned, in December 1943, to Oahu, Territory of Hawaii, with the Second Marine Amphibian Truck (DUKWs) Company. In May 1944, the company sailed with the Fourth Marine Division and participated in the capture of Saipan and Tinian, Mariana Islands. After their capture, the company transferred to the Second Marine Division and remained on Saipan, and Tinian, until the division boarded ships in March, 1945, to join the battle for Okinawa. The full division didn't land but his company was detached and remained on Okinawa until its capture, then rejoined the Second Divison on Saipan. Shortly after war's end, he boarded ship with his company to participate in the Occupation of Japan but he was ordered back to the US for discharge before the ship sailed.

I recently read Mr. Wells' book retelling his experiences in the Pacific during WWII. I was very impressed with his story telling ability and thoroughly enjoyed the book. I have known Mr. Wells most of my life and had no idea that he had been, seen and done the things that he described. This book makes you realize just how great the heroes of WWII are, and how everyday "Joes" rose to the occasion that was presented by just being there. They made us all proud of their tencaity, grit and courage. I am an avid reader and highly recommend this book. I read it on a cross country airline flight..I just couldn't put it down. What a wonderful reading experience.

Art Wells, a Marine on the USS Pennsylvania on December 7, 1941 relates his experiences on that day and during the rest of the Pacific War in "The Quack Corps." Included are Mr. Wells Pearl Harbor experience, where he was wounded, his time on the Pennsylvania after her repair, time on the USS New Mexico and the time he spent with DUKW's in the invasions of Saipan and Okinawa. An extremely interesting and informative book, one that is not to be missed!

An excelent place to begin energy work. But with limitations.......2001-06-02
I would like to give this book five stars, but with my years of energy work I see two flaws in Dr. Krieger's (Dolores Krieger holds a Ph.D in nursing) book.
The things I like about this book.
Several places in this book; Dr. Krieger uses the phrase "You do not stop at your skin". (A statement I agree with completely!)
Page 5-10 the introduction explains how Dr. Krieger began her exploration of energetic healing by observing natural healers like Oskar Estebany, and Dora Kunz.
Page 11. The Kirlian photos of fingertips showing the energy field around the fingers before, during, and after a healing session (proving there IS something to the notion of energy healing instead of coincidence).
Page 12. Dr. Krieger refers to the subtle energy by the sanskrit term "prana". This subtle energy has been explored by people all over the world, and has been called by dozens of different names. Here is an abbreviated list (Akasha, ch'i (Qi), Ki, Mana, Manitou, Nuwati, Orenda, Orgone, Ruach, and many others.)
Page 15. According to Dr. Krieger there is a written history of this subtle energy dating back 5000 years. (I am aware that The Yellow emperor of China wrote his treatise of internal medicine in 2445 BCE (about 4,450 years ago.)
Page 23-34. This section of the book contains simple exercizes where about 95-98% of people can feel and experience this subtle energy and proove it to themself (from my experience, and talks with Qigong masters about 2-5% of people are insensitive to this subtle energy). (Everyone needs proof in the beginning in order to gain confidence that this energy is REAL and not only wishful thinking or coincidence.)
Page 62-63. Has nice photos of Dr. Krieger's friend and mentor Dora Kunz.
Now for the two disagreements I have with this book.
1. Dr. Krieger severely limits her potential because Therapeutic touch is taught to direct this energy to the recepient a few inches away. (This subtle energy can be directed thousands of miles away as effectively as if the healer were standing right beside the recepient. I have doccumentation where I have passed Reiki attunements to people over 10,000 miles away with their experiences. Dr. Larry Dossey relates in "Prayer Is Good Medicine" (if memory serves) the results of a double blind study where half of the Heart patients in a large hospital were prayed for by people of various faiths, and the people that were on the prayer list (without knowing anything about the test) experienced less complications, and required less medication for pain.)
2. Dr. Krieger teaches only how to direct the healers personal reserves of energy. (There are mental exercizes as in Qigong, and healing modalities like Reiki, Seichim, and others that can teach you how to tap into an infinite supply of energy without depleting youe personal reserves of energy.)
(Repeatedly depleting your personal energy reserves can open you the healer to illnesses. If you ever feel weak or nervous stop immediately.)

Can you accept Einsteins paradigm, of the existence of a Life energy flowing through and around all of us. Well this is the concept that therapeutic touch on the whole is based on. Well, here are lessons that teaches you how to believe in this power within yourself, and how to utilize it to heal yourself and others.
I found this book quite informative, and the self-knowledge tests were very useful, especially to the skeptic in all of us. Laying of hands is a wonderful way to explore our own powers and this book is an excellent choice to aid us in this journey.

How Jody Saved My New Year's Eve.......2004-01-04
I've been a fan of this cookbook since I bought it 2 years ago. I've made several recipes and always enjoyed them. I got in a pinch this New Year's Eve when a low-key dinner with my husband turned into a dinner party for 6.
I could only grab one cookbook on the way out the door for work on the 31st and I chose this one, as the recipes are straight forward, but still elegant. I chose to make:
* Socca Crepes with Spinach and Herb Filling
* Fazzoletti -- "Handkerchiefs" with Lemon Cream, Pistachios, Spinach, and Slow-Roasted Tomatoes
* Tuscan-Style Sirloin with Parmesan, Lemon, and Truffle Oil
* Grilled Pineapple with Rum, Lime-Ginger Syrup and Ice Cream
They all got RAVES. And I could make them together "quickly" (for a gourmet dinner) after getting home after 6p with only a few modifications to shorten timelines, like a quick "slow-roast" for the tomatoes, skipping the spinach for the crepes as it needed to be cooked, etc. We had appetizers at 9p, then dinner at 10p, with dessert rounding out just at midnight. PERFECT... this meant we were all actually awake at midnight!
To decrease trips to the store, I also grabbed the groceries for Oliver's Chicken Stew and Nidimi -- "Little Nests" Stuffed with Prosciutto, Fontina, and Spinach. My husband and I enjoyed both of these on New Year's Day and the day after.

Creative and Flavorful Dishes.......2002-10-11
There are some real gems in this colleciton of recipes. They are unique, not that hard to duplicate and are outstanding.
So far, one is truly a standout in my collection: Fresh Tomato Soup with Seared Eggplant Sandwiches. Other recipes that have caught my attention and palate are: Fingerling Potato, Fig and Tarragon Salad, Winter Vegetable Gratin wiht Cranberries and Chestnuts, Fazzoletti with Lemon Cream, Pistachios, Spinach, and Slow-Roasted Tomatoes, Seared Quail Stuffed with Mascarpone and Green Peppercorns, and Sweet and Sour Braised Rabbit with Chocolate.
The instructions are thorough and easy to follow. As well, helpful sidebar discussions are provided on certain ingredients and preparation techniques.
All in all, a unique, classy, flavorful cookbook to use and enjoy.

I bought this after reading the NYT book reviewer's
praise for it, and I've made several of the recipes.
The hands down winner is the Wild Mushroom Fricassee,
which is that rare combo, exotic seeming but easy
to make.
My only criticism so far would be the production
values -- it's not a visually appealing book.
Otherwise, go for it.
2002 12 31 Update: this continues to be a high favorite among my cook books. After dining at Rialto, my opinion of Adams has only risen. Really, buy it.

It's been a long time since I have gotten excited about a cook book but I am finally excited again. I have tried 3 recipes from this book and have deemed them all "company dishes" even though they were easy and economical to prepare. Very brilliant combinations of ingredients and I can't wait to work my way through this wonderful book

I've now tried six of the recipes in this book--including my personal Last Meal Request, Jody Adams' soupe de poisson--and they've all turned out wonderfully. I mean they're among the very best things I've ever cooked.
Adams' culinary gifts are channeled through Rivard's witty, clear and thoroughly entertaining writing and the results manage to be highly intelligent without being fussy, condescending or dry. To the contrary, the book is marked by an unusual warmth of spirit.
The photographs are of real, excellent food, dishes that--unlike those in some cookbooks--won't be mistaken for baroque Easter bonnets or Post-Minimal artwork.
Be aware: this isn't streamlined cooking for weeknight family dinners. You'll be spending a few hours in the kitchen, but if you genuinely enjoy food and cooking your time will be richly rewarded.

The predecessor of this book, Flowering Plants of the World, was a well-known reference for decades to many who love plants. There is a strong sense of continuity between these two books, if for no other reason that both use the same illustrations. In fact the continuity goes further and also involves much of the contents, as evidenced by the error of zebrawood being supplied by a species of Connarus, a myth that was debunked in the 1940's.
Where the earlier book was based on the Cronquist system, with the plant families arranged by order, this book is (loosely) based on APG II (2003), with the plant families arranged by alphabet. As to recognition of families, this book adopts a splitter's philosophy, recognizing 506 families (versus 457 in APG II). The book recognizes families such as Bombacaceae, Cneoraceae, Sterculiaceae and Tiliaceae. The classification in this book will not be found in any other reference, but this splitter's policy may help the book retain its value in these times of constant change in plant classification.

Having a passion for plants I felt I needed to take it to the next level by being able to understand what I was really purchasing at garden nurseries.Most identifying tags on plants for sale list their family names which I did not understand so I had no idea what I was really buying!This book was easy to comprehend,making it easy for me to retain and use the information.This book has made me a more knowledgeable consumer not to mention that I can impress my friends!

Sanity Restored.......2004-04-19
Finally, advice that actually makes sense and really works for pretty much every problem I've had and could expect to run into. Not the "just let them do their thing & eventually they'll grow up" approach of the last book I read (as if I could stand by and do nothing while my kid self-destructs), and not the "crack the whip & make them behave" approach (as if that were possible!). And every parent should read the teens on wheels and dating chapters!

On December 8, 1941, Japanese troops methodically took over the U.S. Marine guard posts at Peiping and Tientsin, causing both to surrender. Imprisoned first at Woosung and then at Kiangwan in China, the men were forced to laboriously construct a replica of Mount Fujiyama. It soon became apparent that their mountain was to be used as a rifle range. In 1945 the author was among those transferred to the coal mining camp at Uteshinai in Japan.
