    Book Description

Surviving the sinking of his ship, the U.S.S. Houston, on March 1, 1942, and making a 10-? hour swim to the beach on Java, is only one of Jack’s exciting adventures.

As a small boy on cattle ranches in Southern California, he attended one-room schools. After graduating from Santa Barbara High School, he joined the U.S. Navy. He thoroughly enjoyed the travels until his ship was sunk and he became a Prisoner of War of the barbaric and cruel Japanese. With only the strong will to live, a good sense of humor, and the Grace of God did he survive 3 ? years of Hell Holes.

After the end of World War II, he remained in the U.S. Navy, and with diligent study he advanced up through the ranks to become a Commander! He was assigned as Chief Engineer on his last two ships that were Aircraft Carriers.

Before and after the war, he had many compelling romances, lots of rollicking fun, and real exciting adventures enough to last two life times.

    Book Description

Christiana Morgan was an erotic muse who influenced twentieth-century psychology and inspired its male creators, including C. G. Jung, who saw in her the quintessential "anima woman." Here Claire Douglas offers the first biography of this remarkable woman, exploring how Morgan yearned to express her genius yet sublimated it to spark not only Jung but also her own lover Henry A. Murray, a psychologist who with her help invented the thematic apperception test (TAT). Douglas recounts Morgan's own contributions to the study of emotions and feelings at the Harvard Psychological Clinic and vividly describes the analyst's turbulent life: her girlhood in a prominent Boston family; her difficult marriage; her intellectual awakening in postwar New York; her impassioned analysis with Jung, including her "visions" of a woman's heroic quest, many of which furthered his work on archetypes; her love affairs and experiences with sexual experimentation; her alcoholism; and, finally, her tragic death.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Jungian American Feminism.......2003-03-29

Translate this Darkness is an unevenly argued book that one cannot decide is about how dangerous men are to women or how dangerous women are to themselves, or how dangerous life is to the living.

While on the one hand author Claire Douglas describes her heroine, Christiana Morgan, in sympathetic terms almost exclusively, Carl Jung's and Henry Murray's influence on Mrs. Morgan is seen as predominantly destructive. Their general existence in her life -- as father figures, as receivers of her endlessly extolled beauty and erotic influence -- is seen as parasitic. They are all 'round exploitative conquerors of the feminine mystique

One cannot help but simply exclaim out loud at several points in the book, especially during the epilogue, what a load of hypocritical American feminist rubbish it is. Why doesn't Christiana just leave Murray, find someone else, and write something in her own right. Jung's 'women', after all, did not need his permission to write and create and have lives of their own.

Douglas claims that these men somehow did not allow Morgan to take responsibility for her own life. Her famous visions, painted by her, and the subject of a four-and-a-half year seminar by Jung in the 1930s (which Douglas has edited, published by Princeton) are considered by Douglas to be of biblical importance to the women of the world. Rather than being used to further an understanding of the feminine by Morgan, these visions were expropriated by Jung for his own supposedly deluded purposes, and were "feared" by Murray as they represented an overwhelming feminine "power" that must be thwarted, lest he lose his own masculine power to it.

First Jung: for the great part of Morgan's life he was simply 3,000 miles away in another part of the world, after the age of 50 making use of Morgan's visions as he made use of so much other diverse literature that influenced his ideas. To say that he unjustly "bent" Morgan's visions to satisfy his own theory of archetypes, thereby damaging Christiana Morgan's soul, becomes irreconcilable when one considers Douglas's statement that these visions also helped Jung to develop those theories (should have been good for her soul, no?)

Wolfgang Pauli's dreams and visions served the same purpose for Jung (see the book Atom and Archetype). Pauli, it may be argued, also lived a life of relatively unrealized potential. He had bouts of alcoholism as did Morgan, and died relatively young, but no one would think to lay this at Jung's feet, perhaps because Pauli was a man and had won a Nobel prize. Morgan was just a poor uneducated girl with a lot of potential that was subsumed by the power of male masculinity and not allowed to be realised into some Golden Flower, if we are to believe the thesis.

Now Murray: he was influenced by Jung to take Christiana as a mistress. This is because Murray was already married, as was Morgan. So it's a tough call who's at fault here. If it was a man's influence that has again ruined the life of yet another woman, blaming Murray for being the wrong man begs the question that there is probably a right man. If the answer is that there should be no man and that Morgan could have gone it alone with strength and conviction, why didn't she, if she had so much "power"? Perhaps she was not so powerful, after all, and certainly without Jung, her visions would not have seen the light of day, as they were "visioned" with his encouragement.

We are left simply with a melodrama of Jungian proportion, an analysis that has been terminated prematurely through the exhaustion and limitations of the two participants. Douglas comes in to pronounce that the unjust winners are still the men and losers the women, in the process ignoring or misrepresenting the success of the women in Jung's circle, and smarter women everywhere.

Men are once again back to being faulted for wanting something from women. To make something out of a mass of visions which would in another time and place be considered certifiable, is not enough. It remains with feminism that it must be the cake and the eating of it, too, something which, if Ms. Douglas would only admit, Jung and Murray were simply not able to have with the impunity she implies, and, therefore, not at all.

Make sure to get the newer (2001) version of this text. Amazon will be more than happy to send you a "new" earlier edition (1999) if you aren't careful. Unfortunately, the 1999 cover of "Living with Stroke" is of very low contrast, and thus difficult to read. So, older folks or people with low vision may be a bit put off by the cover. (But don't let this scare you away. The text within is large and readable.) The newer version may very well contain more up-to-date info.

In response to a family emergency, I ordered four books on stoke recovery. Two had been recommended to me as being helpful for lay people: (1) "Living With Stroke: A Guide For Families" (Senelick, Rossi & Dougherty, 1999) and (2) "Stoke and the Family: A New Guide" (Stein, 2004). I ordered these for my family members (and myself). Two more were written at a much more scholarly, technical level for clinicans: (3) "Recovery after Stroke" (Barnes, Dobkin, & Bogousslavsky, Eds, 2005), and (4) "Stroke Rehabilitation: A Function-Based Approach" (Gillen & Burkhardt, Eds, 2004).

Each of these books has much to recommend it. I hope to write reviews of all four later. I can see why the first two are standouts, and have been helpful to so many people. They are well-written, concise books with plenty of important information. They will help you quickly become an educated consumer of medical care. (They won't always familiarize you with medical controversies and choices, but they do a remarkable job of capturing the key issues. Controversies include the use of anti-seizure meds, and the use of statins for cholesterol reduction, especially in women.).

This book describes the various physical manifestation of stroke (e.g., left vs right hemisphere), types of stroke (e.g., thrombotic, embolic, hemorrhagic, lacunar), diagnosis, pharmacological treatments, risk factors, and the basic rehabilitation spectrum--from physical therapy and activities of daily living to impact of stroke on daily life. The book offers creative ideas for navigating each of the key components. I especially liked the fact that the book does a nice job of covering psychological issues. I'm not talking about old-school psychoanalysis here. I'm talking about things like behavioral, cognitive, and family systems approaches to psychological health. There are plenty of tools provided for dealing with cognitive distortion, pessimism, etc. The book is concerned with the health of the patient AND the health of family and friends.

I believe that many people will be able to complete the book in a night or two. That's important when time is of the essence and you are trying to educate yourself quickly.

If you are a family member and or a caretaker: This is the book to bring with you to the hospital waiting room. You are likely to be waiting for long periods between visits with doctors and nurses, and you'll have many questions. You'll learn much more detailed general information from this book than the 10 minutes you spend consulting with the doc. What this book doesn't explain is how to deal with hospital staff who are busy and not always concerned with communicating with family members. But it provides plenty more. You can use this book to educate other family members and friends who might not be as thorough and bookish as you, and win them over to a sensible and realistic agenda.

If you are a professional, you may find this book helpful, for a variety of reasons. First off, you might consider recommending this book, or the book by Stein, to your patients. Moreover, you might use the language in these books to explain situations and decisions to patients and their families. The authors have taken care to discuss emotionally and cognitively complex material in a sensible and clear manner.

    5 out of 5 stars great resource!.......2006-05-28

this book has been fantastic for helping families and other caregivers of individuals who have suffered a stroke! this book hadn't been written back when my own father suffered his strokes. i really wish that it had been - it would have been of immense help to my own family. now, i am fortunate to be able to recommend it and lend it to families, who all find it to be well written, easy to read and understand, and full of helpful and practical advice in dealing with our loved one, protecting them, and helping us to communicate more clearly and cope more effectively. an excellent contribution to the field!

5 out of 5 stars Start with this book - it should be in every ER waiting room.......2004-11-16

Recently, my 31 year old, pregnant sister had an emergency c-section and then had complications that resulted in her suffering TWO strokes. Doctors would not tell us anything, no one could even tell us what they thought would happen with her. Luckily I found this book. This is a primer for strokes -- it gives everything from a lesson on how the brain works to how a rehabilitation program is put together, to how to cope emotionally as a caregiver. It is a quick read, chock full of substantial information, clear and well-written. You don't have to read straight through: it is well indexed and has a clear table of contents so you can get to the information you need most quickly. The most valuable part of the book is the glossary of terms that helps you navigate the medical-speak you are going to hear. Start with this book and you'll be equipped with solid information and understanding. This book was a godsend in a time of crisis.

5 out of 5 stars This was the only book which really helped explain it!.......1999-07-15

As a stroke survivor, I can honestly say that this is the one to own. It explains your stroke to both you and your family in laymen's terms, yet never speaks down to you or leaves you feeling hopeless. A must for the stroke survivor and his/her family.

Kitty Morse grew up in Casablanca, and through her extensive network of family and friends, she accumulated expertise in the cuisine of the entire Maghreb: Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco. In this part of the world, banquets called diffas are long affairs which include heaping platters of couscous, aromatic tagines or stews, and exquisitely spiced dishes like feather-light Bisteya, a kind of pie often filled with pigeon. Meat, fish, and poultry are eaten, but most of the time, meals center on legumes like lentils, grains, and heaps of vegetables. Some of these dishes require seasoning with preserved lemons, fiery harissa, or a Tunisian blend of ground coriander, caraway, garlic, and chili powder which is called Tabil. Morse opens by showing how to make them all. There are recipes for a meatless Harira, a delightful Cauliflower and Zucchini Salad, and Tunisian Mechwya. There are also grilled peppers, several crustless Tunisian quiches, Foul Mudamus, a stew of fava beans with olives, plus a variety of couscous dishes and breads. Vegetarians will appreciate the complex flavors and brilliant colors of North African food. Those who eat meat will not miss it, thanks to the rich aromas and satisfying heft of Morse's dishes. Photos by Deborah Jones display the beauty of this traditional cooking. Menus will help you organize memorable meals, and mail-order sources can supply needed ingredients wherever you live. --Dana Jacobi

Cookbooks seem to be the rage today. What used to be almost biblical - black text on white paper - has now transformed into stylish coffee table books that you wouldn't dream of bringing into an active kitchen. That's probably a good thing too; few of those recipes are very interesting or authentic. This book is very different. I still won't bring it into the kitchen, but I love to cook with it. The photography is beautiful and the recipes are excellent. Unique methods and ingredients are clearly described with substitutions for some of the more elusive kitchen gadgets or components. The recipes cover every meal and it should give you a good "taste" of North African cuisine.

This is a great cookbook. I'm so glad I bought it. It has a whole bunch of different couscous recipes, a number of moroccan tagines, appetizers that are quite yummy and salads. A variety of spices are used which lends itself to foods that have a nice depth of flavor. Each recipe has a brief intro that tells about the food and gives additional tips. Its a fun cookbook with great recipes. I highly recommend it!

This is quite simply a beautiful book of wonderful Moroccan recipes written by a Moroccan-born American. Kitty Morse was born in Casablanca and now is a food and travel writer living in Southern California. 5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2002-04-23

Victor Mollo's books are simply the most entertaining Bridge books available. The reader is able to identify and relate to each of the characters. Everyone knows a Hideous Hog, Rueful Rabbit, Secretary Bird, and Walter the Walrus. We see these characters every day during Bridge sessions. Mollo has quite the knack for bringing out all of the human qualities expressed at the Bridge table. These series of books are a great read and will forever be considered classics.

The 4th dimension is the human factor in bridge. This book is the funniest book on bridge and one of the best books I have ever read (including non-bridge too).

5 out of 5 stars Great read for all avid bridge players.......2000-04-02

A true classic of contract bridge fiction. Not only will you be entertained but you will learn something as you peek into the world of Mollo's mythical bridge club. All the players in the book are animals but easily connected to personalities you have seen first-hand at the bridge table. The Hideous Hog (master, know-it-all), the Rueful Rabbit (he knows his skills are not the best, but somehow he always manages to do the right thing -- even for the wrong reason), the Secretary Bird (enforces the letter of the law, usually to his own downfall), Walter the Walrus (so caught up in point count that nothing else matters), plus many more. You will find yourself and your partner in this book somewhere. A great read and a great gift for your bridge playing friends. Mollo is my favorite bridge author.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2006-02-03

I have four children and have read MANY parenting books. This is the only one I can recommend in it's entirety. I notice a difference in my childrens' behavior whenever I am too lazy or stressed to adhere to it's principles. Allowing your children to experience the natural consequences of thier actions is the best way to parent. As for the reviewer who equated allowing a school age child to go without lunch with child abuse, that is outrageous. Far greater than harm missing a meal comes from not learning resposiblity. Also, if you really have a three year old who can stay awake for 24 hours in a row...call the Guiness Book! Part of this approach means some effort on your part..you don't get to go to bed and allow you kids to "ingest dangerous poisons". You are misrepresenting the author.
I give this book to every expectant couple I know, and any parent who has daily battles with thier child. I've seen dramatic results with my children when I can stay calm and allow them to make thier own choices about thier behavior and deal with the consequences. Loved it, and the results!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Plain old common sense works.......2003-03-01

My daughters are 19 months and 3 months old. I read this book to nip any problems in the bud. I didn't want to wait until there were problems and then have to correct them. I was quite relieved to learn that parenting style is the same as the one the author describes it should be. My parents had this same parenting style and there were never any eating, sleeping, or getting up problems. My brother and I knew that we had to do our homework, get up for school on time and go to bed. There were no if ands, or buts about it. This parenting style works and as far as I'm concerned it's just plain common sense. Not only that, but it works on other people's children too. Parents don't understand why their child will listen to me and not to them. It's all in the book. It's a good, quick and informative read.

5 out of 5 stars Making Life Easier.......2002-03-09

This book is excellent at providing practical suggestions for families to use. I have followed Dr. Crowder's suggestions and found that with consistency they do make a difference. A must read for every parent!

5 out of 5 stars This Book Saved My Daughter's Life!.......2002-03-06

As an Elementary School Principal, I am always on the lookout for books which will make a parent's life easier. This time I found one that not only helped the parents at my school, it saved my daughter's life. Whether a parent-child relationship needs a major overhaul or just needs a bit of fine-tuning, this book makes a real difference. We are using it continuously as a resource for both parents and teachers at my school.

But it is my personal experience with this book that sold me on its value. First, it helped me to recognize the problems that I was having with my strong-willed 4 year old. Next, it showed me how to recognize the behaviors that I was choosing that contribute to those problems. Once I swallowed my pride, I realized that things could be better. The best part was finding that the solutions that Dr. Crowder suggested were easily accomplished and really did work! I was amazed at how quickly I saw a change in our relationship. No more sass, no more subtle defiance. I am so used to books that take months to make a difference. This book made sense and made it easy to have a realtionship with my daughter that is now even more delightlful than before.

On a final note, I bless the day I read this book and decided to improve my relationship with my daughter. It literally may have saved her life. Shortly after completing the book, my daughter was hospitalized with a life threatening illness. Her compliance with the medical staff and my ability to perform follow-up care for her at home was dependent upon her willingness to do things repeatedly (22 times a day!) that were often either painful or "yucky!". With Dr. Crowder's help, my daughter was called a model patient by the mediacl staff, both in the hospital and at home. As a result, she is alive and well this week. I cannot think of a better endorsement. You never know when you may need to call upon your relationship with your child to save her life.
                              Thank you Dr. Crowder.

                              1 out of 5 stars I don't think so!.......2002-01-30

I bought this book hoping to get some ideas for helping my 4 year old son to sleep a bit more independently. Once I started reading it, I was torn between laughing hysterically and wanting to have the author charged with child abuse.

Crowder starts out with an excellent premise, that parents should be in control and not get caught up in power struggles with their children. However, the consequences for negative behavior that Crowder recommends are just too extreme. The two examples that stand out in my mind are: 1) sending a child to school with no lunch or lunch money if they are not cooperating with making their school lunch and 2) if a child doesn't put their backpack away when arriving home from school, hide it in the trunk of your car, sending the child to school the next day with no backpack and no completed homework.

Yes, I am sure those measures would make the point. Aren't there some steps in between a parent could take that would be a hair less drastic? Steps that make the point without being cruel?

Crowder makes no allowances for what to do if the child doesn't kow-tow to her consequences. What if the kid doesn't care if they went to school with no homework? What if the three year old who won't stay in bed doesn't fall asleep on the floor (as Crowder says he will) and instead wanders the house at night, and ingests poisonous materials?

I dread the thought of a new parent picking this book up and actually trying to implement the ideas.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book... one you can read again and again........1999-08-06

I bought this book because it was another true story about the Alaskan frontier. I was pleased to discover that it covered more than the standard, romantic memories of a rugged life in the far north. Claire Fejes wrote a humorous / honest account of the "true" Alaska. It covers the people she met, the struggles she endured, and those things about daily life in frontier Alaska that make it unique. Never been to Alaska? Read this book if you want to "feel" how cold and isolated (even in Fairbanks) it can be; read this book if you want to "feel" how rewarding and wonderful it can be also. I lived in Alaska for 7 years and I will return someday, but until then I will keep this book close at hand, for those times I need a reminder about what makes that lifestyle and location so unique.

4 out of 5 stars powerful and entertaining.......1999-08-06

I thought it might be interesting to anyone who finds this email to know that I am Claire Fejes's daughter. She passed away in October of 1997 and left a legacy to behold. I re-read this book with new eyes and found more than family history. There is a sense of bravery and awareness that I wish all women had. I am interested in any feedback a reader may have. This book reads easily and was like a drink of pure, cold water.

                                Product Description

In her refreshingly candid memoir, Fejes tells of a remote outpost where a hardy breed of Alaskans overcomes loneliness and of her own soul-aching artistic and cultural isolation. She describes characters such as Eva McGown, a one-woman social-service agency who wears powerful violet perfume and speaks with a sweet Irish brogue; and Fabian Carey, a trapper who loves the wilderness as fervently as he does opera, literature, and art.
