        Book Description

Although less well known outside the field than Edwin Hubble, Walter Baade was arguably the most influential observational astronomer of the twentieth century. Written by a fellow astronomer deeply familiar with Baade and his work, this is the first biography of this major figure in American astronomy. In it, Donald Osterbrock suggests that Baade's greatest contribution to astrophysics was not, as is often contended, his revision of Hubble's distance and age scales for the universe. Rather, it was his discovery of two distinct stellar populations: old and young stars. This discovery opened wide the previously marginal fields of stellar and galactic evolution--research areas that would be among the most fertile and exciting in all of astrophysics for decades to come.

Baade was born, educated, and gained his early research experience in Germany. He came to the United States in 1931 as a staff member of Mount Wilson Observatory, which housed the world's largest telescope. There, he pioneered research on supernovae. With the 100-inch telescope, he studied globular clusters and the structure of the Milky Way, every step leading him closer to the population concept he discovered during the wartime years, when the skies of southern California were briefly darkened. Most Mount Wilson astronomers were working on weapons-development crash programs devoted to bringing Baade's native country to its knees, while he, formally an enemy alien in their midst, was confined to Los Angeles County but had almost unlimited use of the most powerful telescope in the world.

After his great discovery, Baade continued his research with the new 200-inch telescope at Palomar. Always respected and well liked, he became even more famous among astronomers as they shifted their research to the fields he had opened. Publicity-shy and seemingly unconcerned with publication, however, Baade's celebrity remained largely within the field. This accomplished biography at last introduces Baade--and his important work--to a wider public, including the newest generation of skywatchers.

        Product Description

This is the award-winning account of the author's conversations with the Gemstone Guardians - the inner-world beings responsible for fulfilling the purpose and maintaining the effects of gemstones everywhere. In 30 fascinating interviews, the Guardians herald a new field of energy medicine - one that uses the life force emanated by gemstone spheres to heal, nourish, and illuminate all aspects of our lives.

5 out of 5 stars Great information .......2007-08-29

I like the form and the format of this book. It gives great insights as to why we should wear gemstones and the significance to us on this planet at this time. It's more current and up to date then other books and it is channeled information.

3 out of 5 stars Unique Look at Gemstone Healing, With Other Stuff/Fluff Along the Way,.......2007-08-22

I'll admit, I only bought this book because of the statement on the cover by Larry King, which said: "What a remarkable study. You won't put it down!" Being a huge gemstone buff, and somebody who does gemstone healing, I had to read the book that came so highly recommended by just about the most unlikely of sources out there.

I think I got halfway through the chapter "The Assignment is Given" (the first chapter), when I decided to interpret and read this book as if it were a book that gives interesting uses and techniques to gemstone healing and gemstones themselves, wrapped up in an elaborate fictional story. That's not to say I think the author made up what he's writing, as I do genuinely believe that what he writes is what was seen and experienced by his medium (a woman who actually enters the auras of the Gemstone Guardians and acts as a vessel). However, some aspects of these interviews and some of the explanations given for various things are so fantastic or out of reason and logical thought, even contradictory to what's already been written and probably experienced by many people, not to mention heard to reconcile for some with personal beliefs in terms of spirituality, that the only way to process what is being read is to think of it all as a back story to introduce some new, unique, and interesting theories on healing with gemstones.

Overall, I think the book is interesting and worth reading for those that are looking for new ways of using gemstones, presented in a format that is unconventional, and not like any other "how to" gemstone healing book out there (though some of the information was familiar to me already through my work as a Reiki healer, such as the layers of the aura/ astral bodies). The accounts for the meetings were fascinating and, even though certain aspects of the interviews and the information that was shared by the Guardians was bizarre to say the least (such as descriptions of alien beings planting crystals from space ships and the "gemstone wars" that ensued with some mythological entities so as to harness power), I still got a lot of great information that I plan on implementing into my practice of gemstone healing. Not all of it I agreed with or believed... Call it an unnatural hang-up of mine, but even with the faith I have in my own spirituality and the power of gemstones, there were several things said that, because of their outright conflict with scientific theory (and their far-fetched nature), there was some stuff I just couldn't palate... Such as the claims that the black flecks in Emerald were from ancient negativity absorbed in the crystal and neutralized, and that the earth is not millions of years old... But the book is not really written in a way that makes you feel like you HAVE to accept the accounts of the Guardians verbatim to use the crystals in the ways they suggest, or that you can't adapt the information to your own personal uses and needs.

I really had only three major issues with this book:

        1. This book deals with only using crystals and gemstones in sphere form for healing, and the use of clusters, points, and such is very much discouraged. There was a lot of talk of using gemstone beads and necklaces, and larger gemstone spheres to alter the energy of the environment around us, but it was very strongly suggested that non-sphere shaped crystals and gemstones were not of the same power and energy as the clusters. At one point, I think it was in the discussions they had with the Guardian of Quartz, where it was actually suggested that non-sphere crystals should be "returned to the earth" as they had the potential to be destructive and should not be used. This is something that my own experience, and the experiences of many I'm sure, directly contradicts. I think that gemstone and crystal's latent energy is not necessarily dictated by its shape and size, and I don't think that spheres are stronger than anything else. I think that piece of information will be hard to process for many a healer who's had experience the opposite of what they state.

        2. The Guardian of Emerald, the Guardian of Amethyst, and the Guardian of Ruby stated, as did others, that the more "gemmy" a stone was, the rarer, clearer, and conversely, the most expensive cuts of stone had more healing power than the occluded, non-gem quality stones. Another grain of information I think many healers, myself included, find to be untrue and somewhat irritating. Especially since the tip to run out and buy high-quality, non-black flecked, green Emerald beads because they're a key for your healing toolbox is not a helpful tip for those who can't afford to put thousands of dollars into gemstone healing. Again, I think the experiences of those healers who have not had the means to buy the best of stones for healing, yet still manage to be fantastic healers, goes a long way to speaking that this information is not entirely true, and reinforces more of the idea that "expensive = better" not "best energy regardless of appearance = better." As we all know, doctors with state-of-the-art, expensive tools and materials aren't always better or more adept than the ones with less, so why would somebody reinforce the same with gemstone healing?

I'll admit, these first two themes were reinforced so often and with such inflexibility (the only thing about what was in these books in terms of crystal application that I thought was completely rigid and inflexible in the eyes of the author) and it was a frequent irritation for me. If you happen to agree with these two stances, or are neutral on the subject, maybe it'll be less of an irritation for you than it was for me. But after awhile, I just wanted to say "ENOUGH ALREADY!"

        3. There were a couple of times where the book kind of went off on what I suspect were personal or pet issues of the author and the vessel, and it seemed more like political statements than the genuine revelation of a Gemstone Guardian. For example, during the discussion with the Guardian of Rhodochrosite, there was a rather long tangent (initiated by the author who asked questions on the topic) about toxic waste dumps, how it was to the planet like drugs are to human beings, and how to get people to stop harming the earth through toxic waste dumps. A tangent I found odd, since Rhodochrosite was theoretically to cure emotional patterns that were destructive and increase emotional and personal knowledge. In fact, it was even said at one point that the Guardian was on a tangent, which made the whole thing look and read even odder. I guess I didn't get why, if one is communing with the Gemstone Guardian of emotional issues, why you'd bring up questions about toxic waste dumps. For that matter, there were several questions asked by the author that I thought to myself "You're talking to this great entity, and you're asking *that?*" Such as the author asking a question of a Gemstone Guardian (Purple Rainbow Fluorite) that was already completely and satisfactorily answered by the Gemstone Guardian of Quartz. Truthfully, there was at times a great deal of redundancy in what was being said by the Guardians and what was being asked by the author.

But perhaps that's my personal perception and irritation, and we all have our own questions we'd ask if we were faced with such beings, and the questions others ask are never as satisfying as the ones you'd ask yourselves. :)

I'm glad I read this book, and I do think it was incredibly interesting, though certainly this book isn't for everybody. I wouldn't dream of suggesting this book to somebody who's new to the concept of crystal healing, or somebody who hasn't gotten their techniques and beliefs down pat first. This is not a book for beginners (unless this is the only book they'll ever read on the subject), as I'd venture to guess most beginners would find it incredibly difficult to sort through and apply, especially when they start to compare information from a variety of sources and find a lot of it contradicts this book. I'd also suspect that those looking for a more clinical and straight-forward explanation of the function of crystals and healing would be irritated by the fantasy novel-like aspects that go into the descriptions of the Gemstone Guardians, their roles, and the uses and roles of the crystals, and would find it frustrating to sort through all of that fantasy and fiction to get to the information they're after. But for those who like a little fantasy to break up the monotony of crystal healing books, or for those interested the spiritual revelations of another in the field of Gemstone Healing, or those who are just interested in the mystical self-help genre, I'd say you'll probably enjoy this book. Not the best out there, but certainly not the worst...

        2 out of 5 stars Not What I Anticipated.......2007-08-03

I am not into the magical and mystical powers of gemstones. From the review I read, I was prepared for a book naming and showing all types of gems along with some beliefs and meanings of color and gemstones for my jewelry designs. I would not recommend unless you are interested in Wicca and forms of mysticism and magic.

4 out of 5 stars Another unique view in the world of Gemstones.......2007-07-13

Katz's works truly are special in the world of healing with members from the Mineral Kingdom. They focus only on the aspects of working with spherical gemstones. While they attempt to deny the validity of working with minerals in their natural forms, there are many useful lessons to be learned from this book.

Each Gemstone Guardian is met in his or her own vignette, and the reader really does begin to feel the excitement of the stories presented. However, there are many names invented for the use of this book and all of Katz's successive works. Gemsiphere Institute only works with a limited number of stones, although that number is growing. While they have greatly helped the crystal healing communities by providing concise, updated information in an original format, as well as stressing the importance of safety measures and the necesity for a certain standard in healing, I feel that they have also done a slight disservice to the community.

Natural crystals are thought to be sub-par, despite the fact that their uses and energetic blueprints are being very well mapped out. Physical alteration of a minerals outer form, such as shaping it into a sphere, in no way changes the inner morphologies and symmetries presented by the internal arrangements of chemical elements and mineral bases. While the symbology of gemstone spheres runs deep, the energy emitted by them is not necessarily any different from that of any other piece of a given mineral. The inner lattice creates a very precise arrangement of the energy transmitted by a crystal, whether or not the external form is visible.

Aside from that, this book truly is an exciting read, which is the main reason that it received 4, rather than 3, stars.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and interesting.......2006-08-25

I learned alot about gemstones. The colors and types of gems represent different aspects of ourselves and our life. It helps me to realize why sometimes I pick out certain colors on some days to work w/my challenges. This book is an eye-opener if you are interested why we make our choices as we do. I hope this review helps someone to see if this book is for their eyes.

I especially like the section "Make It Hearty", which has suggestions for simply adding a couple of additional ingredients to a can of soup to make a meal.

5 out of 5 stars By far, the best crocheted baby blanket book out there.......2006-10-04

I came upon this book at a local yarn store, and immediately fell in love with it. It helped that the store had re-created one of the patterns from the book, an adorable 9-square teddy bear face blanket with blue trim and 3D ears. I bought all the yard I'd need to make a similar blanket (no doubt that's what the store had in mind!), and I'm just now finishing my own version (using fuzzy yarn for the faces).

I can't recommend this book highly enough. First off, the photography is gorgeous, a real treat to page through. The patterns are so beautiful, and are presented clearly and neatly. I have yet to find any mistakes in them. Some of the patterns are more complex than others, but I've found you can tell pretty quickly what the level of expertise required is, simply by looking at the complexity of the pattern presented. The last few pages of the book also include helfpul refresher tips (or how-to pictures for beginners) related to the stitches and techniques required in the patterns.

If you love to crochet, and want to have a source for really creative, lovely, and customizable blankets, then this is the best book out there that I've found. I'm really very happy with this purchase.

I like that Ms Jensen has included some designs that move away from the over done but somehow obligatory pastel pink and blue.

I worry, though, how safe her added "sheep", flowers, and pom poms are.

This is a very nice book of crocheting "blankies" for kids. It is well done with good pictures and very understandable directions. Great variety of different types of afghans for babies. If you like this book, check out "Candy Babies" and "Candy Tots" also by Candi Jensen. She is a very creative crocheter and for someone like me who really is drawn to baby and tottlers' clothes and blankets, she is a great resource.

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Primer in Creating Topiary.......2000-05-20

This book rates five stars for its thorough and visually appealing discussion of how to create topiary. I was so thrilled when I received it - it was exactly what I wanted. Not only does it cover the different shapes of topiary, but an excellent discussion of the various plants that may be used, their pluses and minuses, the tools to use, techniques - just everything you would need to know.

The book also includes a great review of the historical uses of topiary in different periods and countries. Best of all, there are fabulous color pictures of topiary gardens and the different topiary types. After reading and consulting this book, I feel certain I can tackle some topiary projects. In case you couldn't tell, I love this book.

                  Book Description

Athletics is a metaphor for life; that's why Move Without the Ball is not just for athletes. Anyone who has ever been involved in the pursuit of excellence understands the need for dedication, perseverance, and sacrifice. Everyday, young adults are bombarded with images and stories of extreme wealth and fame -- be it in sports, music, or Hollywood. Their vision of success can become limited to these areas, and they lose focus on developing other talents and skills. A reality check is in order, because the odds are fifty thousand to one that a student athlete will play in the NBA, and similar odds apply to aspiring singers and actors who expect they will be the next superstar. The upside is that there is a much bigger world out there for young people to explore and succeed in, and Move Without the Ball serves as the guidebook.

Stedman Graham -- businessman, lecturer, and author of the New York Times bestsellers Teens Can Make It Happen and You Can Make It Happen -- speaks honestly and directly to teens from his own experience. A former European professional athlete who never achieved his dream of playing in the NBA, Graham understands the pressures and temptations young people face. He discovered that there is a process for building success in many areas of one's life, and he has spent the last twenty years sharing this process with young people.

The book overflows with powerful and inspiring stories and photographs of sports stars of yesterday and today, including Hank Aaron, Greg Norman, Magic Johnson, Mia Hamm, Pelé, Dave Winfield, Serena Williams, Bo Jackson, and Cal Ripken Jr. -- just to name a few. It's not just these pros' athleticism that's highlighted in Move Without the Ball, it's the winning combination of courage, self-discipline, sense of purpose, and passion that they bring to their lives everyday -- both on and off the field.

                  4 out of 5 stars Applause Stedman -- Dead-on for our youth.......2006-03-16

I'm an adult and a founding board member of a sports leadership program for high school athletes. The book is dead-on for helping not only young athletes, but any youth to understand and meet the challenges ahead (as a leader.) The stories were good and applicable. Although I found that the beginning of the book didn't pull like I'd want...Stedman provides solid guidance and useful information later on. It's an easy and quick read that could become a reference for its market. I intend to present the book to my organization to see if they'd like to look into purchasing it for our students. I understand Stedman has also created a program to put action to the intent of the book, and I'm looking into that as well. Mary Kurek

3 out of 5 stars Stedman, You're Capable Of Better.......2004-12-09

Anyone who's seen you talk knows that you must have kissed the Blarney Stone, for you are a powerful motivational speaker, and I was excited to get a copy of your newest book as a gift for graduation. But I was disappointed on opening the book to find out that your only advice in MOVE WITHOUT THE BALL gets repeated in innumerable ways for about 150 pages too long. Yes, it is for student athletes, but I don't think any of them would profit from your tips. This time you are moving with the ball, it is clenched between your arm and your ribs and it seems you are frozen in one rhetorical posture. TEENS CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN was a livelier book with more of an edge, and seemed to capture the dynamism of your speaking style. My mother always used to say, "Listen to Stedman Graham, because any man who could woo and win Oprah Winfrey must have a lot on the ball," and Mom is always right. However, the writing in MOVE is very flat and limp. You profile a lot of athletes and never hint that any of them are leading less than a perfect life. We know too much about the pains and troubles of life to believe you, life isn't easy even when you're moving without the ball. I believe you would like to boost the success ratio of kids, but empty words and promises are not going to do it. "Be honest," you say (on page 102). Why not tell that to Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi instead of to the young people who have never lied to you or to the American public. "Do the work that is required," but Stedman, we all know plenty of kids who do the right thing all the time and yet they are treated wrongly by the systems that prevail.

I like one piece of your advice, "Take the time to see things through," and I advise you to take more time, before you produce your nest best-weller, for my gut feeling is you are trying to write too many books too fast and the quality is suffering. You can't churn a book out like a tub of butter.

                  Your fan, Kevin

5 out of 5 stars Shooting from the Hip.......2004-09-06

This book should become required reading for all students in our high schools who have visions of a career in sports as well as other venues such as music, theater and otherwise that the road to these careers are not necessarily paved as exemplified in the media. It takes a lot of hard work, practice, practice, practice. Even then those who make it are few and far in between as Mr. Graham relates. As a young man I had visions of becoming a concert pianist but a wise and talented music teacher gave me information such as one will read in this book that I need to go outside the box and perhaps study something from which I could make a living. I studied accounting. I still play piano but in the privacy of my own home; I work in accounting and have worked ever since. (The copy of my book has a collating error in it. At what should be page 123, pages 75 thru 106 are repeated so that there are 31 pages of Stedman Graham's wisdom not there, however the rest of the book is an outstanding read).

                  Book Description

"Ancora imparo" (Still I'm learning) -Michelangelo, Aged 87

"If Heaven will grant me but ten more years, I promise to be a truly great artist." -Hokusai, Aged 89

Kandinsky, Titian, Hals, Turner, Renoir and Munch, and a surprisingly large number of other major artists, lived to be over seventy-five. Some of their finest and most distinctive works, including Michelangelo's last Pietà, Goya's Black Paintings and Monet's Water Lilies, were done in old age. Whether experimenting with new approaches, adopting new techniques, responding to changed circumstances and debilities, or reacting to the approach of death, the intensity of the late work of many of the greatest artists is striking.

Childhood genius has often been studied but, astonishingly, this is the first book to draw attention to a considerably more important artistic phenomenon. Old Masters establishes beyond doubt the frequency with which elderly painters and sculptors reached new heights in their seventies and eighties and suggest why and how they did so.

Beautifully illustrated and superbly written, Old Masters offers us a rare, intimate, and often surprising glimpse into the final days of some of the world's most cherished artists.

Praise for Thomas Dormandy's The White Death: A History of Tuberculosis:

"Dormandy weaves together cultural and medical history with the skill of a learned, witty, and humane scholar . . . strongly recommended." -Library Journal

"Dormandy vividly details the long struggle against tuberculosis. . . . Prodigious research and an engaging anecdotal style make this a fascinating foray into the history of medicine." -Publishers Weekly

"[A] marvelous book. . . . [It is} enlivened by Dormandy's mordant wit and idiosyncratic style." -Anita Brookner, The Sunday Times

"One of the most readable medical histories ever." -Sunday Express

Dr. Bond of Rebeccasreads highly recommends OLD MASTERS as a highly original book, which seems to have something for everyone. People who like biography, those interested in the lives of great artists, history buffs, individuals who are curious about biological aging, & those hardy souls who wish to learn how & why some people live longer than others, should find a storehouse of treasures in this book. Thomas Dormandy, who is a physician specializing in biological aging as well as a successful artist, has written in a style easily read by intelligent lay readers. He also has a delightfully subtle sense of humor which added greatly to this reader's pleasure.

The major portion of OLD MASTERS goes deeply into the lives, loves, & work of 10 artists, in order to understand the source of their late-life creativity. Since the meaning of "old" is elusive & often changes according to period & place, the author included only long-lived artists of the first rank, who died no younger than the age of 75. He has excluded artists who were still alive, & those who died after 1955. The author takes us through the lives & productivity of each artist, & demonstrates how his work had changed & grown in his later years.

Each biography is a tour de force.
