      Book Description

This fascinating biography celebrates the bicentenary of Wheatstone's birth, and draws on information about the family business as well as letters, including correspondence with Cooke and Faraday, which were not available for the first edition. Charles Wheatstone was one of the leading electrical engineers of the mid-nineteenth century, and began his career in the family musical instrument firm where studying the workings of musical instruments gave him a taste for physics. He was responsible for the introduction of the electrical telegraph where his scientific understanding enabled him to turn it into a practical technology. This book will be of particular interest to scientists and historians interested in the work of this pioneering engineer.

      Book Description

You are what you eat, and your baby is too. Not surprisingly, a pregnant womanís chances of giving birth to a healthy infant are dramatically improved when she's on an excellent diet. From the authors of the bestselling What to Expect When Youíre Expecting and What to Expect the First Year, together with over 15 million copies in print, here is the definitive guide to nourishing both the unborn child and the mother-to-be.

What to East When You're Expecting suggests a "Daily Dozen" diet comprised of wholesome unprocessed foods. Allowing for a weight gain of 20 to 30 pounds, its easy-to-follow plan uses a simple system to monitor servings from 12 food groups that promote fetal development and maternal well-being.

In addition to 100 recipes, the book suggests the best foods to eat at home, in restaurants, even at the office or when traveling. It is sympathetic to the modern womanís particular concerns and time pressures, and offers special counsel to vegetarians, special warnings to those who drink, smoke, or fast, and special encouragement to all who plan to breastfeed. Over 823,000 copies in print.

      1 out of 5 stars thank god I didn't pay for it.......2007-08-14

This book works hard to confirm your worst fears, and with all the tact and forgiveness normally associated with the Gestapo.
If I wanted to stay thin, I wouldn't have gotten pregnant.

2 out of 5 stars goes WAY overboard.......2007-03-07

I generally like the "What to Expect..." books, despite the sometimes preachy tone, but this one just goes too far. I made it about halfway through this book and then just put it down in disgust. It was making me afraid to eat anything for fear that it was not a "perfect" food.

Certainly it's good to eat lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and dairy products, and to limit processed foods and artificial additives, whether you're pregnant or not. If you're looking for encouragement to do that and some recipes you can use, this book may have some value.

However, if you're like me and tend to be strict with yourself and/or go overboard, this is probably not the book for you. If you take this book literally, you should avoid ALL refined sugar for the entire 9 months you are pregnant. That means not a single piece of candy, cake, Christmas cookie, nothing at all. Plus they seem to assume that you will cook home cooked meals out of fresh ingredients (no convenience foods) every day and oh by the way, bake a couple of times a week. In my experience this is not realistic for most modern pregnant women who generally have full time jobs and/or other young children.

I found the whole thing to be depressing and discouraging, so I just put it away and followed my doctor's dietary guidelines, which were nowhere near this strict. Although I probably would have gained less weight had I followed this book, I had a happy, healthy pregnancy and didn't stress so much about what I was eating. I see no evidence that my daughter would have been better off had I eliminated the occasional chocolate or cookie from my diet and been miserably obsessed with every bite that crossed my lips.

I don't recommend this book unless you are already committed to following a sugar-free, all whole grain diet and are looking for encouragement, or are just looking for some healthy recipes and are able to take the rest of it with a grain of salt.

1 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE recipes, unrealistic expectations!.......2007-01-31

Yes, it is completely true what the other reviewers have pointed out - this book has RIDICULOUS standards that no human being could possibly live up to. When I first purchased this book (luckily second-hand so I didn't pay full price) I was very excited about having a wealth of knowledge and recipes at my fingertips. But as soon as I started reading it, it just made me feel so guilty and horrible about everything I ate before I knew I was pregnant, and also what I was expected to do now that I know. Talk about ruining the experience! I even tried some of the recipes in the book - the veggie soup was bogus and "FUDGE BROWNIES"??? Give me a break, those were the most disgusting things I have ever tried to eat. They were not chocolately in the least but rather tasted like some kind of fig bars. Just listen to your body and your doctor's advice and skip this piece of trash!

      3 out of 5 stars Book.......2007-01-12

This was OK I think you would be better off just getting what to expect when your expecting and read it.

5 out of 5 stars This was my favorite pregnancy book!.......2006-09-11

I had always feared the aftermath of a pregnancy, but following this plan for my 1st pregnancy left me leaner after the pregnancy than before--even though I stopped working out at 5 months! I only gained 23 lbs total, many people did not know I was pregnant for the first 6-7 months.

Some are angry at the guidelines, they are tough but they really do help. Here in the US, there are so many whole grain options out there it is realistic. When I was pregnant with my son, we were deployed in Italy; let's just say, it was very difficult to find reasonable foods to eat outside the home.

Although I cheated on occasion, the chart was very helpful for me, and re-emphasized the importance of vegetables and dairy in my diet. It also clarifies which food dyes and additives are dangerous for a growing baby. If you eat smartly, as the book recommends, you can count some items more than once--if you feel that the program requires you to eat too much.

My baby was an average 7lb 14oz, very healthy, without colic issues.

Caprial Pence (of Caprial's Bistro in Portland, Oregon) and her pastry chef, Melissa Carey, go for "flavor and substance" in Caprial's Desserts, a volume of master recipes and variations for the desserts that keep her Bistro customers coming back for more. These are simple desserts that don't need translation. They are mostly old-fashioned, the kind you wish your grandmother passed on to you, such as the rich and moist Chocolate Buttermilk Cake. And to ice it, her Chocolate Sour Cream Frosting is the recipe you've been looking for. Master recipes are followed by variations just to get you started. Caprial encourages us to experiment with whatever we have on hand. Their recipe for a truly crispy Fruit Crisp is followed by variations for Oatmeal-Nut Crisp and for Individual Fruit Crisps. Once we understand which parts of the recipes are safe to change, the sky's the limit. Banana Cream Pie, Caramel-Pear Tart with a Graham Shortbread Crust, Jenny's Great-Grandma's Gingersnaps, and Peach-Raspberry Scones are comfort food epitomized. Orange-Caramel Pull-Apart Bread, Chocolate Bread Pudding, Strawberry-Mascarpone Ice Cream, and Coconut Cream Cake will impress your friends and thrill your kids. These recipes are creative enough for anyone to appreciate, and are so clear, concise (most take up less than a page), and easy to follow that even pastry novices will feel comfortable diving in. --Leora Y. Bloom

                  Book Description

Caprial Pence has teamed up with Melissa Carey, her pastry chef at Caprial's Bistro, to create another fantastic cookbook, this one entirely devoted to desserts! In preparing the collection, Caprial and Melissa poured through their recipe files, winnowing them down to 50 core recipes, each grounded in the chefs' shared appreciation of wholesome, comforting, no-nonsense desserts that beg to be made time and again. The result is a deeply satisfying, truly essential collection of classic and contemporary recipes for cakes, pies, and tarts; custards and puddings; ice creams and sorbets; and cookies and special-occasion desserts. Like a culinary school class, CAPRIAL'S DESSERTS focuses on the basic process pastry chefs practice daily—using master recipes and techniques as a springboard for developing creative new desserts. Building on the 50 master recipes, each chapter reveals how they can be finessed to create one exciting variation after another. Along the way, clear step-by-step photographs put you alongside Caprial and Melissa in their kitchen as they share their secrets for making extraordinary pie dough, working wonders with an ice cream machine, perfecting the delicate art of puff pastry, and numerous other essentials of the sweet kitchen. If you are new to baking, this book will give you the confidence, inspiration, and skills to build a solid dessert repertoire; if you are an experienced baker, it will help you hone classic techniques and push you to new levels of creativity and improvisation in the kitchen. A model of beauty and clarity, CAPRIAL'S DESSERTS is destined to become a well-thumbed, and flour-caked fixture on your kitchen bookshelf.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent recipes, lack of photos.......2007-05-07

This dessert cookbook has amazing recipes that work. The pie crust recipes are especially great because they call for butter and shortening, resulting in a tender and flaky crust that tastes great, unlike butter only recipes. The coconut cream cake and german chocolate cake are very moist and decadent. The only major problem is the lack of photos. They do have some, but I wish they had more. I will NEVER understand or agree with cookbooks that are put out and do not contain photos for the majority of the recipes. I would like to know what the end product will and should remotely look like. Also, I have tried better cookie recipes. However, because the cake and pastry recipes are so decadent, yet simple (even the more labor intensive ones are easy to follow), well structured and reliable I still highly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars A Caprial fan is dissappointed.......2003-07-24

I am a huge Caprial fan. I own almost all of her cookbooks and have been to her restaurant again and again, but I am somewhat dissapointed in this cookbook. There are a lot of good things about it. The selection of recepies is fantastic, pies, cakes, cookies, breakfast sweets, it's all there. Moreover, her method of starting with a basic recepie and including variations expands the range of the book, encourages innovation, and makes it easier to get around personal dislikes and/or allergies to particular ingredients.
My problem with this book is that the recepies are unreliable. I have made several of them with mixed results. The brownies and the banana cream pie came out perfectly (in fact her brownie recepie is one of my favorites), but the muffins were dry and heavy, the filling for the dreamsicle pie was way too runny (although the three nut crust was good), and the blondies required a much longer baking time than the recepie gave. The worst was the biscotti recepie: the dough came out so runny I must have dumped four cups of flour on it just to get it to hold together, and that was after it made a gloppy mess all over my counter. I've had successes with this book, but I just don't trust it anymore.

5 out of 5 stars Want to impress your guests?.......2002-05-13

This is a great cookbook. I have quite a few dessert cookbooks in my collection, but this one is destined to be a favorite. Her instructions are straightforward and easy to follow. I really appreciate that she has a master recipe and then variations so you can 'customize' the desserts. For example, she has a wonderful Banana Creme Pie recipe that received rave reviews from our dinner guests. For my next party I tried the Coconut Creme Pie, again with wonderful results.

My one fault with this book is that the desserts are not for the faint of heart. These desserts are labor intensive and the author does not tell the home cook that although you will need the chocolate sauce and chocolate ganache for the pie, you will need far less than what the recipe calls for. The sauces I needed for the pies was more for decoration rather than as a filling.

The Chocolate Buttermilk Cake was simply divine. I used leftover ganache to fill it and it was heavenly. The desserts taste wonderful and the pictures are exquisite. It was well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Dessert Cookbook.......2002-03-22

This is a wonderful dessert cookbook, especially if you are looking for one main book to use. Like Caprial Pence's other cookbooks, recipes are very tasty and the directions are easy to follow. What is particulary nice about this cookbook is the photographs that show the various steps for certain cooking techniques. Whether it is a cake, cookie, muffin, ice cream, or other sweet treat that you want to bake, Caprial Pence and Melissa Carey have the perfect recipe!

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent results.......2002-01-22

The recipes in this book work! and for me that is the most important thing. The chocolate cake recipe is fantastic. I would buy this book for that recipe alone. So far, I've tried 3 recipes from this book and they have all turned out great.

I'd been dying to make the flying eagle that's on the back cover, but I had some difficulty with the instructions, which untilmately lead to a dud project. They weren't specific about which pieces NOT to add 1/4" to, as well as the sample progression photos were not all taken of the same project. I ended up with a flying torpedo/pidgeon/hot dog because I added 1/4" to the white head & tail. The rest of it was fine. Sigh.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Fun for those with Quilter's Block!.......2001-12-18

I have had a heck of a time starting to quilt, as I am afraid of color selection, that is- until I bought this book! This is the most fun I've had in years! The designs are beautiful, fun, and belive it or not, EASY! I am just a beginner! You can complete a project in about a day! This book is fantastic! The other snippet book is wonderful too! If you don't buy these books, you are a crazy quilt!

                    5 out of 5 stars What a fun concept.......2001-08-07

After receiving this book, I read it cover to cover twice! I couldn't wait to get started. This is so much fun. The author explains every step thoroughly. There are a lot of pictures to help guide one as well. Once you get started on the technique, you can't stop. I love 'painting' with fabric. This author perfected the technique. Definitely worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars Informative and Interesting!.......2001-01-04

As an artist, but not a seamstress, I found this book to be very complete as far as instruction in this method of creating fabric pictures. I found the method to be very simple to create interesting, original pictures from scraps of material Having no previous experience with fusible web, I had no problem following the directions and creating enjoyable pictures to give as gifts and to sell. I was not interested in the quilting directions included, but think snippet sensations. is a marvelous new hobby anyone should be able to do with ease

4 out of 5 stars Snip for fun.......2000-10-16

I discovered this book after watching the author on a sewing tv program. I really like the impressionist art style and thought what a great way to combine two art forms. However, in the tv show, she showed how to make flowers. They are NOT included this book. I did make the wreath that she discusses in the book and in one afternoon, I had a beautiful wallhanging. The step by step directions are great. Don't be intimitated by the samples she gives, just go for it!!

Parenting Your Adopted Child provides helpful tools that enable families to understand and counter common myths about adoption that may be harmful to their children. It also clearly demonstrates how parents can effectively tailor their parenting approach to suit their child’s distinct needs.

This book covers everything from society's perspective's on adoption all the way to dealing with teenager's. I've read a few different types of adoption books and this is the first one I'd recommend.

Should you treat your adopted child just like your neighbor treats her child who wasn't adopted? Or should you worry about every problem, thinking it may be linked somehow to being adopted?

The answer is that raising an adopted child is a balancing act and Dr. Adesman offers practical advice and guidance on doing just that, whether your child is an infant through the tough adolescent years. Based on practical experience and backed up by valuable research studies, Parenting Your Adopted Child is a helpful book well-worth its very low price.

A good book for the person embarking on their adoption journey. However, if you've already adopted and have done a bit of research into adoptive parenting, you are most likely already aware of how to deal with many of the situations presented in this book.

                                Book Description

Captured by the Japanese on Corregidor in 1942, the author, a Navy medic, found himself aiding many of his fellow captives who had been wounded in the defense of the island. This is his story of imprisonment by the Japanese at camps in the Philippines, Japan and Manchuria. His remembrances of caring for the sick and wounded at Bilibid and the brutal Cabanatuan prison camps where starvation, malnutrition, diseases and degradation were a way of life are included. Also detailed are his journey aboard the Japanese hellship Oryoku Maru that left Manila with 1,619 prisoners but arrived in Japan with fewer than 400 survivors and his liberation from a camp in Mukden, Manchuria, by Russian troops.
