The White Guard is less famous than Mikhail Bulgakov's comic hit, The Master and Margarita, but it is a lovely book, though completely different in tone. It is set in Kiev during the Russian revolution and tells a story about the war's effect on a middle-class family (not workers). The story was not politically correct and thereby contributed to Bulgakov's lifelong troubles with the Soviet authorities. It was, however, well-loved, and the novel was turned into a successful play at the time of its publication in 1967.

You'll Be Amazed at How this reads like a Modern Book .......2006-11-10
From the language used to the references about government, politics and religion, you would think that this book was written about current times. But it is written about one of the most unknown parts of the Communist take- over in Russia following the first world war.
After the fall of the Russian Empire and the deposing of the Tsar in February 1917, and then the October Revolution in 1917; many of the constituent parts of the Empire opted for independence. Most people know of the creation of Finland, the Baltic States and Poland, and even about the civil war between the whites and the reds. What is not normally known is that the Ukraine declared itself an independent republic at the same time. Unfortunately for the Ukrainians, no one recognized them.
Actually two Ukraines were declared, one in Austrian Galicia (Western Ukraine) which was swallowed up by the Poles under Polsudski, and another based in Kiev. The one in Kiev was originally allied with the German Army who had signed a peace accord with the Reds at Brest-Litovsk, that included much of the land around Kiev. The German's saw this area as a protectorate and placed it under the control of 'Hetman' Shchnolpolsky and the Rada (Parliment). This is the group that was backed by the "White Guard" made up of Tsarist officers and cadets from the local military academies.
As the story begins we are introduced to the Turbins, Alexi, Elena and Nikolta. Alexi was a doctor in the Tsarist army, Elena's huband was a colonel and Niki was a cadet. In a short period of time they are visited by some old friends who are also ex-officers. But Germany has now been declared a Republic and the German Army is leaving. So too does the Hetman and most of his cronies. Elena's husband is also on the run. Alexi and Niki and their friends have all joined the Guards. But with the break down of the Hetman group, another group under General Petlyura (a cossack leader) has declared themselves head of the Ukrainin People's Republic (they are actually called Greens and fought under the Blue and Gold banner of modern Ukraine).
Most of Petlyura's soldiers are from the ranks of the old tsarist army and they hate the "officers" of the White Guard almost (if not more) than they do the Bolshvik 'Reds'. What we witness is the divided loyalties or the upper classes (officers) and the 'normal' people who just want to go on with their lives (and will cheer anyone they have to as liberators).
Though this book was not published until 1967, as the play "Days of the Turbins", was a big favorite in the Soviet Union (and was supposedly seen by Stalin fifteen times) though Bulgakov was not allowed to publish any of his material after 1920.
The White Guard is not the White Army, which later kicked out Petlyura, under General Deniken, who was subsequently defeated by the Red Army under Trotzky in the Crimea and had to abandon Russia in 1921. For those who know the history of the 'famine' in the Ukraine in 1922-23, this story will give them more understanding of why Stalin allowed so many people to starve to death (he could never trust their loyalty).
Great book!!.......2004-12-21
What i loved most about it (i'm Russian myself) was the poetry with which Bulgakov infused every line of the novel. The language seems to give it a certain timeless quality, and at times a heartwrenching beauty..
I just looked at the excerpt from this translation and it seems to be pretty good. I'd recommend the edition to anyone.
an interesting step in the russian revolution.......2004-11-10
Bulgakov, while not as well known as most of his russian predecessors, is an exceptional writer. this novel, which covers only a short period of time immediately after world war I and before the bolshevik revolt, tells of the turbin family and their life in kiev. this aristocrat family has stong ties to tsarist russia and are caught between the retreating germans and the approaching socialists.
the turbins join the white guard to help defend their homeland. the war is portrayed with all of its horrors. there are heroes and villians. neighbors come closer together as the inevitable end comes nearer. civilization begins to collapse as the socialists enter the city cheered on by the common people.
bulgakov makes the reader feel the fear and the horror as only one could who has lived through the experience.
an excellent example of modern russian literature.
Stunning novel about a world coming apart forever.......2003-03-11
While we are, as Americans, familiar with the story of the Stalinist purges and know something of post-Revolutionary Russian history, the Russian Civil War between the White and the Red is not as well-known.
But this is the crux of the struggle that subsequently determined Russian history. Many authors tried to give a view of that turbulent period; Pasternak in "Doctor Zhivago", Solzhenitzen marginally in "Ivan Denisovitch" (Denisovitch was in a gulag because he was a returnee from the German front and thus viewed as a political traitor) and Ayn Rand "We the Living." Bulgakov's novel is one of the richest, most touching and well-written I have read on this historical time.
He takes the story from the personal standpoint of a single family affected by the German betrayal of Russia to the incomprehensible brutality of the Civil War. The use of "white" and "red" as symbols in describing everyday objects and landscape is novelistic, the action is pure stage drama as you'd find in a play or film.
This is a far better novel than "Doctor Zhivago", which dealt with essentially the same subject (families torn apart by the Civil War and their way of life forever altered.) If you are at all interested in Russian history, I can't recommend "The White Guard" enough to you. I just loved it.
freedom and personality.......2003-02-10
The drama adaptation of this novel was a great success at the Moscow Arts Theatre in 1926, helping to launch the career of the great Stanivslasky. Why? Because Bulgakov dares to tell the story of the revolution from the point of view of the defeated White Guard - Bulgakov's side--, only within years of the victory of the Red Army.. Amazingly, it was played uncensored for a number of years and also a favorite play of Stalin's.
Yet even if Stalin allowed the performance, the press was unforgiving, allowing only three good reviews out of a total of 301 in six years, some of them bluntly calling the bourgeois hero Aleksei a "son of a b..." or the author a "senile dog"!!
-Yet Bulgakov continued to do exactly as he pleased, and he continued writing his "blasphemous" satires on Stalinism -in THE MASTER AND MARGARITA we see the Devil himself arrive in Stalinist Russia to try to "sort it out"-, while at the same time he kept sending agonic letters to Stalin in which he complained about not receiving the royalties due for his work... Indeed, when he eventually asked permission to migrate, Stalin offered him a job!
Hopefully.. knowing about the courageous spirit of the author and the peculiar friendship this story kindled between Stalin and his least disciplined subject will make people more interested to read it. ...

History of Russian anti-Soviet activities.
Customer Reviews:
A truly unique book.......2006-05-10
This book is a rare glance at Russian emigration after the upheavals of the communist takeover in 1917. The story follows the life of the Mordwinkin family as they are forced to flee Russia, try to establish a new life abroad, but still maintain their connection to the country they left behind. The book is very personal at times, but it deals in detail with Russian emigre society as a whole. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this time period of Russian history.

The worst of all possible worlds.......2002-05-23
This book is not for the recreational reader, indeed it is one of the most depressing and distressing documents I have ever read. Nevertheless, I urge all readers concerned with issues that impact on the survival of humanity to read it thoroughly and absorb the lessons which it so graphically presents. In terms of an indictment of our government and various vested interests, it compares favorably with J'accuse written in 1898 by Emile Zola in response to the corrupt behaivor of the French nation, government and army during the Dreyfus affair. The most horrifying event in the book, and there are many to choice from, is the description of how the Health Physics Division was subdivided after Dr. Morgan's retirement in 1972 and distributed among "other laboratory divisions where radiation protection is not a primary objective". When I read this my immediate thought was of the dismemberment of Lemuel Pitkin so brilliantly described by Nathanael West. One can only be appaled by the many destructive acts which occurred when the Angry Genie left the bottle. It is frightening that those responsible for them have, to my knowledge, never been cited for criminal irresponsibility.
A charming and important book........1999-10-12
This charming memoir starts in 1943, when Dr. Morgan was recruited away from his happy research on cosmic-ray physics to join the atomic-bomb project. He was one of the four or five persons assigned to figure out how to prevent bomb-workers from irradiating themselves to death. In 1943, it was barely known how to measure doses from the various types of radiation, so Dr. Morgan had to invent many a metering device. Additionally, no one knew how to store the radioactive waste which would accumulate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where Dr. Morgan detected its escape-routes and tried to plug them. He became an internationally honored expert and author on radiation health-effects and protection measures. This is the story of a man of great integrity, who made enormous contributions to protecting health, and yet by his own standards, failed to succeed well enough. His "walk" through the nuclear age helps to illuminate the suppression of scientific dissent in the nuclear enterprises --- and presents an interesting contrast to books by Dr. Glenn Seaborg (Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission) covering many of the same years. The ninth chapter covers Dr. Morgan's expert testimony for the plaintiffs in two landmark trials (the Karen Silkwood Case 1979, and the Utah Bomb-Fallout Case 1982). The memoir provides not only an important record of moral, legal, public health, environmental, and scientific history --- but it also provides a highly engaging personal story of coping with the unexpected.
The Angrt Genie is a must read........1999-07-08
It is commonly understood that only the best books are made into audio tapes. On a whim my family and I put the Angry Genie to the test. We read the book aloud on our annual cross country car trip without one complaint from any family member. The surprize attraction of the Angry Genie is its real appeal to the non scientific person. By just glancing through the book one might assume that he or she could be overwhelmed with scientific material, however, by no means is that the case. In the 180 pages of story, from the amazing experiments under Chicago University Stadium to the many photos of actual players in our history, I was drawn to the personalities and inside details of the developments of a powerful scientific discovery. In fact I most recommend this book because if the surprizing revelations on several fronts. First, the power and importance of science and scientists in this centuary is no more dramatically illustrated than in this story of nuclear power. Not even the terror of 'Outbreak" or the suspence of 'Apallo 13" are equal to the reawakening we get in the Angry Genie. Second, Dr. Morgan was able to input all of the required technical information and formulas in the book without interupting the book's flow. Third, the historical, medical and sociological impact is compelling. There is the letter from Einstein to FDR about the potential of the bomb and the fascinating information about the effects of all the different types of rays on humans. I plan on telling my book club about this wonderful book as well as all my friends who love historical books.
The true story of an unsung hero who saved countless lives........1999-06-26
I was captivated by Karl Z. Morgan's 50 year battle with powerful elements in the nuclear industrial complex for common sense safety measures. I was appalled to discover the extent of the damage the government inflicted upon our citizens through the abuse of nuclear power and and careless weapons' tests. Even more disturbing is Morgan's summary of numerous radiation experiments our government secretly conducted on innocent Americans. Morgan stands out as a pillar of truth in a desert of deceit. No one can read this without thinking "I had no idea this was going on."
A man of faith becomes a world famous scientist........1999-06-26
I really enjoyed this story about a good human being who descended from a long line of Lutheran ministers going back to Martin Luther. It required considerable courage for Dr. Karl Morgan to publically detail the "biggest mistake" of his life when he reluctantly agreed to censorship by his superiors. This book was clearly written from Morgan's soul and provides valuable perspective from a 91-year-old legend who started the entire field of health physics. This autobiography should be required reading for all Americans.

Customer Reviews:
A great resource for preschool teachers.......2007-08-26
I have found this book to be very insightful in reading the behaviours of children and young people. I am a high school teacher and it is very obvious when students don't have a chance to develop these six life skills. The ideas for activities to promote the skills were fun and easy to implement and made a lot of common sense. I feel inclined to send this book to all the local small people schools. Very easy reading too. Some generalisations were made however at the end of each chapter were lists that made it easy to research further if you need to.
Definitely a great find
Beyond Behavior Management: The Six Life Skills Children Need to Thrive in Today's World.......2006-05-19
This book is amazing! I have been looking for a book like this to guide me in teaching children the social/emotional skills they need to thrive in my classroom and in life. It is packed full of information, sample scripts, and activities that will help you successfully implement its ideas and principles in your classroom. Although it was skillfully written for use in the classroom, parents could also learn a lot from it. It is a must read for all preschool/kindergarten teachers. Read This Book!
Excellent.......2005-09-23
This is the book I've been waiting for! It demonstrates such a wise and compassionate understanding of children and the root causes of their behavior, AND it gives loads of practical suggesions on how to actually work with kids in ways that are productive and respectful. I am a preschool director, and I bought a copy of this book for every one of my teaching staff. Jenna Bilmes goes way beyond stickers and charts and explains how teachers (or parents and other adults) can speak to children and frame activities to elicit very different responses and build social and emotional skills kids (and adults!) need to be successful and enjoy life. Thank you, Ms. Bilmes, for writing this book!
Finally!.......2004-10-31
It's about time! In all the years I've been dealing with children, I have never found a book that explains childrens' behavior in such a clear and understanding way.
The book takes you through a number of chapters, each dealing with a different aspect of behavior. Bilmes does a wonderful job illustrating these in a clear manner while providing the reader with charts and tables.
My favorite part is that she is understandable. She doesn't try confusing the reader with "big words." She gets to the point and the point gets to you. You don't need to read and reread sentences to decode them, which I found very helpful.
I could not be happier to have purchased this book. It is a lifesaver in the classroom.

simple, easy to use, some delicious dishes.......2006-03-26
Enjoyed preparing some of Croatian dishes.
Tried Bosnian meat finger rolls. You should try it, too.
Hmm,..........2006-03-10
I was really excited when I ordered this cookbook. I couldn't wait to surprise my boyfriend and his brother with some 'home cooked Bosnian food'. I looked through the many recipes and only recognized the cabbage rolls and the meat pies. So,.. I'm not Bosnian or Croatian, or even Yugoslavian at all. But NO ONE I showed the recipe book to heard of ANY of the recipes in there!! They actually laughed at them,... I was sooo bummed! I'm not saying that the recipes are not authentic, because I don't know. If they are, they're probably just not 'typical' Bosnian recipes, or something. Maybe just Croatian? Any way, I was just a bit disappointed because I REALLY wanted to cook something for my boyfriend and I couldn't because he didn't know what the recipes were either. Easy enough to read, metric measurements,.. just not at all what I expected. Still, some interesting and tasty sounding recipes.

Description:
It is well known that androgens play a critical role in mediating the reproductive behavior of males. However, many laboratory experiments that examined the effects of testosterone in male songbirds typically limited their investigations to the early phase of breeding. We sought to determine the influence of testosterone on social behavior, pair bonding, nesting, and use of space in captive zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) males as a function of breeding stage (pre-laying, incubation, and nestling phases). Fourteen males were released into an aviary with 14 females and allowed to breed for 7 weeks. Half of the males were given testosterone implants and half were given control implants. During the pre-laying phase, testosterone-implanted males spent significantly more time in nesting activities than control birds and more time elapsed from starting to build a nest to when their mates initiated egg-laying. During the incubation phase, testosterone-implanted subjects spent significantly more time in female-directed and undirected singing. Use of space varied between hormone conditions depending upon breeding phase: there was no difference during pre-laying, but during the incubation and nestling phases, testosterone-implanted subjects used significantly more space. This significant increase in ''home range'' during the latter phase of the breeding cycle coincides with results from field studies on other species. These results underscore the importance of considering breeding phase in assessing the behavioral sensitivity to hormones.

Great information for beginners.......1999-11-17
This book has given me all the information I needed to help in raising my finches. I enjoy it and refer to it everyday.
Maybe the best book for the new Zebra Finch owner........1999-03-30
In just a short 76 pages Hans-Jurgen Martin touches on all aspects of Zebra husbandry. The information goes somewhat beyond beginners' interest and includes an excellent introduction to genetics. The quality of photos in the book are excellent,I only wish these nice photos where dedicated to more photos of the various varieties of Zebras instead of nests and types of seed. I find it to be a valuable quick reference source and it sparks further interest in the care and breeding of Zebras. I would highly recommend it to anyone who keeps Zebra Finches. Kathy Dezern
VERY INFORMATIONAL.......1999-03-01
we purchased zebra finches without much knowledge on that breed, nor of any breed. we found this book to be very informational in regards to nesting, feeding, enviroment, breeding, etc... it is a book that you can always reference to. thank you to the author for writing this book for the advanced as well as the novice. a book you will truly enjoy.

The "Bible" of the seat weaving industry!.......2000-10-09
Of all the myriad of reference books I have acquired in the 25 years working in the seat weaving business, The Caner's Handbook is by far the best and #1 on my entire list.
I was fortunate to purchase my first book (in hardcover), right after it was published in 1984. I had already done every type of seat weaving covered in this book, but through the clear, close-up pictures and accompanying text, was able to fine tune my craft even more.
At each one of my seat weaving classes, and whenever someone asks me what the best all around book on seat weaving is, I tell them to buy The Caner's Handbook. Through the information in this book, anyone can learn to weave with cane, rush, splint, rawhide, Danish Modern, Oriental seagrass, and all types of splints in a variety of designs and patterns.
Jim Widess, who besides co-authoring this book, is the owner of The Caning Shop, where he and his employees not only sell materials used in cane and basketry, but have first-hand knowledge of weaving. They have been doing this for a living for many years, so know all the problems and questions the novice as well as the consumate weaver might encounter.
I urge anyone that is contemplating beginning seatweaving as a hobby or profession to buy this wonderful book, take some time to read and digest it, then go out and conquer the world of seat weaving! There will be no doubt that you will be a professional in no time!
concise, straightforward.......2000-07-15
this book is far and away from your typical 'how-to' book. These actually want you to learn this skill. You won't be let down with this one.
The only book you need to weave seats.......1999-06-22
One book that tells you EVERYTHING is The Caners Handbook by Bruce W. Miller and Jim Widess. It is the best I have found. A great book for beginners as well as pros like me who have been in the business for 20 years.
The one reference a chair restoration enthusiast must have........1998-11-30
This book provides an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide to all the major seating types, with plenty of photographs. You'll refer to this book over and over.

Mother, know thyself--especially mothers of daughters, for as Nancy L. Snyderman, M.D., and Peg Streep so eloquently convey in Girl in the Mirror, self-aware mothers stand a much greater chance of helping their daughters become happier, more fulfilled women. But there's a catch: oftentimes, a girl's volatile journey through puberty occurs during her mother's midlife--another physically and emotionally challenging stage of womanhood. Fusing an impressive array of research findings, expert interviews, quotations from classic texts on teens, and journal entries from regular moms (and a few dads), Snyderman and Streep clear a safe path through the brambles and muck commonly associated with "surviving" adolescence.
Optimism, encouragement, and empathy fill every page of this thoughtfully compiled text. Whether they're unraveling a deceptively complex topic such as girls' friendships (from childhood "best friends" to teenage sexual partners), or reporting hard data on tough issues (chronic disorders, drug abuse, violence), Snyderman and Streep never buy in to "inevitable" scenarios. Rather, they offer practical methods to help mothers nurture a pattern of appropriate openness, trust, and respect with their maturing daughters. Excellent tools for assessing one's current perceptions, handling tough situations, and gracefully managing change add further substance to this marvelous resource. --Liane Thomas

Solid Research Backs Practical Advice.......2003-06-02
I was tempted to disregard the authors when they admitted they had not survived the tempests of the adolescent girl and were opining that "[w]e see the challenges of adolescence as an opportunity." Right, I thought. Wait until your daughter gets to be my kid's age and see if you'll keep saying it's just a great opportunity.
So with this bad attitude, I perservered. And after reading the book, I grudgingly agreed they had a point: you don't have to approach this phase as something to "get through," but as a period of self-reflection and growth for the mother as well as the daughter. They do a good job of explaining how to separate those issues and how what our mothers did influence us, whether by good example or bad. As the authors note, "[m]othering is not instinctual but an act of invention...[b]ecoming aware of who we are when we mother our adolexcent daughters is a step each of us must take, and will require that we look at how the ways we were mothered affect us now."
The research was very well explained--everything to why it seems that our daughters are stressed out over things that seem so trivial to us to the effects of lenghthened educational requirements. The authors deal specifically with issues that may cause special problems for teen girls: sexual identity, substance abuse, depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and abusive relationships. It would have been nice if they had addressed self-injury more, as it has become more epidemic among teenage girls, and only receives a one-sentence mention.
Overall, however, this is an excellent overview of the issues facing mothers of adolescent daughters, and deserves to be both read and reread.
extraordinary book.......2003-03-24
This is an extraordinary book filled with support, encouragment, and insight for the mother of an adolescent girl. "Girl in the Mirror" picks up where "Embracing Persephone" by Rutter leaves off. As a psychologist specializing in adolescent girls, and mother of a 15 year daughter, I found the book invaluable and will read it over and over again for guidance. There is so much personal pain for mothers to let go of their daughters and move on with their lives. I have been searching for a book that would comfort and guide ME during my perimenapause in relation to the deep pain of some of the emotional letting go that must take place between mother and daughter during the teen years. These authors call it liberation not separation, they show through empirical and anecdotal information how mothers don't need to pull away, they need to be there and let their daughters pull away and come back when they need to. "Girl in the Mirror" steps out of the sterotypical advise about adolescent angst and moves the reader through some of the internal angst a mother feels letting her daughter become liberated. The research is in depth, and the anecdotal examples are rich with variety. Addressing mid life and adolescence is key for mothers to understand themselves, and appreciate they still have a strong solid place in their daughters lives. Snyderman and Streep honor the special bond between mothers and daughters. All mothers will benifit from this book. The pain of separation is the same, whether you have a son or daughter. Mother's need guidance and support to stay in the lives of their adolescent children, even when they tell us to go away. Snyderman and Streep put it this way: "Shepherding our daughters through adolescence requires that we give them love, support, safe haven, and when the time is right, permission to leave us behind; it also requires that we give ourselves permission, in turn, to move on to another stage of life." They let us reach this challenge as a journey and help us see it does not happen over night, they shephard the reader through this challenging journey and help us find the jewels amoung some of the pain, leaving us with hope. I highly reccomend this book to all mothers of all adolescents.
An excellent read !!.......2002-06-12
This book is surely worth buying !I was extremely impressed by the contents of the book.Iwill surely refer to this book a lot when my daughter who is only 8 now gets older.I am tempted to call this book a "bible" for women with daughters !
An excellent resource.......2002-03-04
As a mother of two preadolescent girls, this book left me with some new, invaluable tools at hand. It also turned upside-down some of my own beliefs about this definitive stage of development. Primarily, the notion that young women need to separate from their mothers in order to become autonomous individuals. In my heart I did not agree with what I had learned from the earlier research regarding separateness. I longed for a deeper bond with my own mother through my teen years, and suffered a deep sense of loss when I was forced to "grow up" at around age 13.
The research compiled in this book is so thoroughly reviewed and explained by Snyderman and her coauthor, Streep, that the reader is left with a clear understanding of the critical issues we are facing. The writing is concise and conversational, with lots of anectdotal accounts from mothers included to illustrate the research results presented throughout the book. I would recommend this book for mothers of daughters as young as ten years old, as it has been useful in my relationship with my own ten year old daughter.
Complex subject- Complex and wise treatment.......2002-02-23
I have had the book for several weeks and have been reading and studying it all that time. The ideas in the book are based on real life stories from many persons and on research done by the authors. Bringing these two areas together had to have been difficult but is done well. The research takes a little time to read but when the fit with real life experience is shown it is well worth the study.

Book Description
Interviews/Art/Art Criticism. Translated from the French by Daniel Sloate, with an introduction and preface by Fulvio Caccia. Interviews with fifteen Italian-Quebecois artists, spanning three generations. Daniel Sloate, translator of the book, explains that the volume "has a parallel structure: on one level it describes the careers of fifteen artists of Italian origin; on another level, invisible and subterranean, it depicts the life of the Italian community in Montreal which, instead of being interpreted, interprets, instead of being a passive object becomes a subject active in and through history..." Including interviews with first-, second-, and third-generation Italian-Canadians-painters, writers, and musicians-all of whom in some overt way address issues of transculturation or cultural hybridity in their work, this volume explores both the specific circumstances of these fifteen artistic lives, the historical and contemporary ramifications of Italian immigration to Quebec, and more theoretical issues of art, ethnicity, and cross-cultural experience.
