Book Description
The September 11, 1814, triumph of an American naval squadron over a much more heavily armed British squadron on Lake Champlain is considered the most significant tactical and strategic naval victory of the United States in the War of 1812. Yet the American who led the squadron, Commodore Thomas Macdonough, is a largely forgotten hero. In this work, historian David Skaggs rectifies the oversight by presenting a well-researched and detailed account not only of Macdonough's brilliant actions in the battle, but also the whole of this remarkable sailor's life. Not since the commodore's grandson wrote about him in 1909 has anyone explored Macdonough's career so thoroughly. Unlike that early uncritical look at the naval leader, this study offers a balanced view of Macdonough's career and character. The work also explores the art of naval command in the age of fighting sail and tells how Macdonough received training in naval leadership and applied those lessons.

Book Description
A compact field reference for campers, and a robust cookbook for all lovers of natural foods. It includes an illustrated guide identifying 70 wild plants and a collection of 350 recipes for serving up the forager's finds. For all regions. 98,000 copies in print.
Customer Reviews:
Amazon has the wrong title for this book........2005-07-18
The book pictured is Billy Joe Tatum's Wild Foods Field Guide and Cookbook, a subtle title distinction from Billy Joe Tatum's Wild Foods Cookbook and Field Guide, but an important one. This 5 1/2" x 7 3/8" reprinted version of the 1976 classic, done in 1985, might be more convenient to carry into the field, but it is a lot less convenient to use in the field or in the kitchen as the print is tiny. The pages have been reduced from the original size of 7 3/8" x 9 3/16". You'll be happier with the original, which I'd give four stars, if you can find it. Each of the 70 wild plants featured in the book has its own page of narration, and a good black & white ink sketch. What distinguishes this classic from all others, however, is that it combines the guide with "over 350 irresistible recipes for serving them up."
Ozark Forager shares her joy.......1998-09-01
The staff of our nature center lists this as an excellent resource. Her BIG, detailed books have good drawings and great recipes. Her home is the Ozarks so the plants are common to us in Oklahoma.
Book Description
Imagine making serving dishes perfectly suited to the food you're preparing--perhaps a cone-shaped bowl on a pedestal, filled with shrimp and corn, with the husks shooting up gracefully. What an impression this would make on your guests...and what a pleasure for your family to sit down to such a beautifully prepared table. With clay, and guidance by a best-selling author who's a real pro at ceramics, it's simple to hand-build stylish, customized tableware that's just like the pieces you covet in pricey galleries. Even beginners will easily follow the illustrated instructions for making slabs, extruding, molding, and more. Every seasonally themed project showcases a complete table setting, with a delicious extra in each--a teapot in one, a pitcher in another--and features a new technique to try out. For more creative inspiration, four top potters share detailed expertise in the special section on surface decoration: they'll reveal the reasons behind their stylistic choices and walk you through the entire process. And, if you're a "rebel" who likes to do it your own way, the book is simply packed with options for adapting and substituting!
Customer Reviews:
Great resource for potters.......2007-08-06
This a a great resource for the functional potter or ceramic artists. Full of images and inspiration, as well as detailed inspructions of many items. A must have.
Handbuilt pottery book.......2007-01-12
Good pottery book for hand building. Some interesting and workable ideas.
Sparked new ideas for my own work.......2004-08-02
The technical information in this book is excellent: well presented, illustrated and explained. While I agree with the other reviewer that most of the actual projects shown are not fitting with my taste, the ideas and techniques presented have proven helpful to me. I also found myself wishing that the cover art was included in the how-to projects (which it is not). My only other criticism is that darting is not covered, but great examples of it are, so the reader never gets the explanation of how such forms are achieved.
Overall, this is one of the best technique books I've come across. I would recommend it, especially for the hobby or beginning potter. If you have a formal education in the ceramic arts you will know most of these tips already and find the suggested projects lacking in sophistication. It may however spark some new ideas for your own work.
Quirky tableware in an otherwise well-written book.......2001-06-28
I was misled by the cover of this book thinking that the tableware inside would be clean, simple and elegant. I couldn't be more wrong. I find many of the pieces featured looking weird and overly-decorated. Maybe that's what the author means by "distinctive". This is my greatest misgiving about the book. Otherwise, the author did quite a good job explaining the basics of pottery (with helpful tips along the way), guiding the reader on how to make tableware to suit the four seasons, and demonstrating the surface decoration styles of four different artists. There is a glossary at the end of the book and appendices detailing cone-firing ranges and glaze formulas.
Book Description
A comprehensive, highly illustrated guide to handbuilt ceramic techniques as well as an informative overview of the contemporary ceramics scene. For amateur and professional potters alike, featuring more than 200 color photos.

Great Book.......2007-07-03
As an experienced ceramic artist, it's nice to be reminded, that we are never too old to learn
In this book Kathy Triplett shares many of her skills, what I also enjoy is seeing the works of some other outstanding ceramic artist
Honestly, after seeing this book, you will be off to the ceramic supply store, and stocking up on clay & glazes
Comprehensive Ceramics Book.......2006-07-19
Through setting up, producing simple pieces to attempting more complex projects 'Handbuilt Ceramics' is an excellent guide. There are many examples of simple and basic ceramics pieces for inspiration along with practical advice. Each of the projects has step by step photographs and clear written explanations. I have found it useful and interesting.
Very useful.......2005-10-07
This is one of the most useful and well-done ceramics books I've found. It strikes a good balance between basic information (i.e., theory) and practical application (in the form of example projects). It has hundreds of good color photos: some of finished work (to stimulate creative ideas), and others showing step-by-step techniques being applied. The text is well-written and full of useful tips.
Inspiring.......2002-10-23
This book is wonderful. The writing is clear and concise, the project instructions have enough detail to give you confidence for execution and experimentation.
The photos are good quality and inspirational. In the short time I have owned this, I have used it in adult and children's classes. For smaller children who want to rush to the wheel, the book gives excellent examples of what can be accomplished with handbuilding.
The book lit a creative fire for new 6 year-old potters and this old, experienced potter.
Excellent book for both experienced and new potters.......2002-03-18
I turned to this book after being "stuck" with wheel throwing--I just can't think of anything to make on the wheel that appeals to me right now. The pictures and techniques have freshened my creativity and inspiration, and are leading me to explore new techniques and develop new skills that I will eventually combine with wheel-thrown pieces. My favorite aspect of the book is the variety of styles that are shown in the beautiful pictures--there really is something for everyone in here. The directions are comprehensive and clear. Thank you, Kathy, for bringing back the excitement I felt when I first started working with clay. An amazing book! I'm not allowed to come to class without it, and other class members have made trips to the book store to pick up their own copy.

Book Description
"This unique and powerful book is a must-read for any woman on a path of self-discovery and personal empowerment. Authored by seven leading female psychologists, Finding Your Voice is full of inspiring wisdom and practical tools and will give the reader thousands of dollars worth of therapy for the price of one book!"
-Barbara De Angelis, Ph.D.
author of Are You the One for Me?
Recognize and realize your true desires
Is your life what you want it to be? For most women, the answer is not really. Too often, we listen to everyone but ourselves when it comes to determining how our lives should be proceeding-and this prevents us from living the lives we really desire.
In this remarkable new book, a team of highly credentialed psychologists shows you how to overcome unproductive, blameful thoughts and unrealistic expectations-the things you tell yourself about how marriages, friendships, children, and careers should be. Each chapter lays out widely promoted images of a modern woman-the mother raising a perfect child and loving every minute of it, the top-of-her-game career woman, the woman who loves her body just as it is-then reveals how women more often beat themselves up with these ideals than achieve them. Finding Your Voice shows you how to use self-talk to sort through expectations, isolate your own voice, and take the necessary steps to meet your unique needs. You'll be happier and more confident, and you will live a more fulfilled life-the one you're entitled to.

Helping women recognize and realize their true desires
In this remarkable new book, a team of highly credentialed psychologists shows women how to overcome unproductive, blameful thoughts and unrealistic expectations-the things they tell themselves about how their marriages, friendships, children, and careers should be. The book encourages women to counteract idealized images by using self talk to sort out where those "should" messages come from, isolate their own voices, and then take steps to meet their unique needs.
Dorothy Cantor, PsyD, Carol Goodheart, EdD, Sandra Haber, PhD, Lenore Walker, EdD, Karen Zager, PhD, Ellen McGrath, PhD, and Alice Rubenstein, EdD, are distinguished mental health care professionals. Andrea Thompson is a professional writer.
Customer Reviews:
A Special Resource for Women.......2004-06-28
This is a jewel of a book, which identifies some of the most common sources of difficulty for women as they live their lives out in our culture(s). If offers, in readable, understandable, jargon-less language, ideas and examples of how to identify what your own voice is saying to you, about what expectations you and others have of you, in relation to a variety of life situations, and how to plan and make behavior changes that will reflect your own wishes and values.
A Structured Approach to Empowering Women.......2004-04-17
Drs. Cantor et. al. have provided an incredibly useful approach for women to allow themselves to listen to their inner voices, rather than be influenced by the messages of myths, men and media. Women reading this book will finally be at peace with the difficult decisions that continue to plague us all (i.e., to work or not to work) and will have the tools (through movement strategies) to change those aspects of their lives that need adjustment. (With a section at the end for this specific purpose,) what a great book for a book club, or any group committed to harnessing the power of women to effect positive change in their personal and professional lives!
