3 out of 5 stars At last - an insight into what it was like at The Bulge.......2001-05-12

Welsh has given us a rare view of the day-to-day slogging through both real mud and red tape that our men faced during the Battle of the Bulge, and no doubt throughout the entire war. Some of his opening scenes still make the hair stand up on the back of my neck as though I were the man in the shadows.

Welsh has a vivid way of expressing himself, probably because he lived through the incidents he has fictionalized, and if you have ever wondered how the average Joe fit into the scheme of things during WWII, this is the book for you.

    Book Description

Even the gods of old, in the wildest imaginings of their worshipers, never undertook such gigantic tasks of world-wide dimension as those which Tesla attempted and accomplished. -from Chapter One First published in 1944 and long a favorite of Tesla fans, this is a definitive biography of the man without whom modern civilization would not exist. Nikola Tesla, pioneer of electrical engineering, was a close friend of Pulitzer Prize-winning author O'Neill, and here, O'Neill captures the man as a scientist and as a public figure, exploring: . how Tesla's father inspired his life in engineering . why Tesla clung to his theories of electricity in the face of opposition . how the shy but newly popular Tesla navigated the social life of New York in the gay 1890s . Tesla's friendship with Mark Twain . the story of Tesla's lost Nobel Prize . Tesla's dabblings in the paranormal . and much more. JOHN JOSEPH O'NEILL (b. 1889) also wrote Engineering the New Age and You and the Universe: What Science Reveals.

    2 out of 5 stars Hardly prodigal.......2007-05-16

Tesla was not prodigal by any definition of the term. He was a genius-fool with severe neurological problems. Omitting the real Tesla makes any biography of less worth than it could be.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty fascinating stuff.......2007-03-22

Once I got by the romantic flair of the first pages, I really enjoyed O'Neill's biography of Tesla. The subject of Tesla's life is certainly fascinating. He was a true visionary and a man well before his time.

Minus one star for the romance (Is this typical of biographies of the era? I don't know.), for some circular logic (punishing Marconi for not seeing the potential of wireless transmission but lauding Tesla generating the first X-rays even though he did not grasp their potential).

Over all, an informative and enjoyable read.

P.S. I recommend Googling up Tesla's patents while progressing through the book.

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Book About the Amazing Life of Nikola Tesla.......2004-10-05

This book tells the fascinating story of an amazing Serbian boy, Nikola Tesla, who was born in 1856, in the area we now call Bosnia. The author explains how Tesla's accomplishments brought forth our modern electrical power era and provide the foundation for the industrial system on which the entire world is built.

Tesla's mother could repeat, without error or omission, thousands of verses of the national poetry of her country. Tesla shared her retentive memory. He had another ability that he only revealed to his mother. If Tesla thought of an object, it would appear before him exhibiting the appearance of solidity and massiveness. He used this ability to visualize the solution to creating the first alternating current generator.

The first time Tesla's ability to visualize helped him in his quest to develop an alternating current generator, occurred when he suggested to a college professor that alternating current would solve some of the problems with a piece of electrical equipment that could be used either to generate electricity or if supplied energy could operate as a motor. As his professor demonstrated the machine, the solution to the problem came to Tesla in such a vivid, illuminating flash of understanding that he knew his visualization contained the correct and practical answer. He saw both the equipment operating without the problems and doing so efficiently, however, he could not see the essential details of how this could be accomplished.

In Feb of 1882, Tesla took a walk in the city of Budapest with a former classmate. While a glorious sunset overspread the sky, Tesla engaged in one of his favorite hobbies-reciting poetry. The setting sun reminded Tesla of some of Goethe's beautiful lines:

    The glow retreats, done is the day of toil;
    It yonder hastes, new fields of life exploring;
Ah, that no wing can lift me from the soil,
Upon its track to follow, follow soaring...

Suddenly, Tesla snapped into a rigid pose as if he had fallen into a trance. "Watch me!" he said, "Watch me reverse it!"

Tesla's friend said, "I see nothing, are you ill?"

"You do not understand," said Tesla, "It is my alternating-current motor I am talking about. Can't you see it right here in front of me, running almost silently? It is the rotating magnetic field that does it. See how the magnetic field rotates and drags the armature around with it? Isn't it beautiful? I have solved the problem."

Tesla now had an electrical system utilizing alternating current, which was much more flexible and vastly more efficient than the direct-current system then being used. But now Tesla had another problem, convincing the rest of the world that his alternating-current power system was simpler, flexible and freed electricity to be sent long distances. The direct-current systems being used at that time were not able to send electricity long distances without major problems. The fact that our power system today uses alternating-current shows that Tesla was finally successful. The book, Prodigal Genius, provides all the fascinating details of this story

5 out of 5 stars This book is an experience that will change your life........1998-11-24

Here is a story of a man born in the glorious womb of science, a man who so completely understood the laws of nature and the scientific method that he commanded total dominion over the physical universe.

Once you read this book you will find it difficult to name an aspect of modern life that hasn't been affected by the hand of Nikola Tesla.

Some of Tesla's ideas were so far ahead of his time that to the people of his day, they were considered impossible; his vision of the world of the future was mocked and laughed at even by other scientists. Over time scepticism about the possibilities of science and technology has waned. Unfortunately for us the world was not yet ready for Tesla, this man out of time, and he died with his greatest achievments alive only in his mind.

4 out of 5 stars Biased, but still a good book.......1998-03-01

The reporting of Tesla's life is biased to report the good, and gloss over the errors. Despite this, it is still a very good book, a great insight to a great inventor. The comparison of methods with Edison is interesting. Tesla's ideas were all his, and Edison use lots more experimentation. According to the book. Treat with an once of salt. Still excellent material though.

    5 out of 5 stars A Man's Story, not just the Science........2001-06-02

Unlike the other review I read on this page I find this an Incredible Book. I first read it as a teen and was inspired by the story of an inventor who never has been truly admired by the mainstream. His rivalry with Edison, his failure in love and his unusual mental talents all combine to create an extraordinary story of a man who appears more like an Extraterrestrial than human. The book isn't full of pictures... because not many exist, but if you can aspire to your imagination and delve into O'Neill's description of this man you'll find it all amazing. I've come back to this book again and again... for the story and not necessarily the physics.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this book.......2000-04-17

Fans of any type of literature will find this book to be a grave disappointment. There lacks any main theme, aside from the man himself. It contains several articles regarding different aspects of his life and inventions, jumps haphazardly from one subject to the next, but its greatest failing is it's quality. It has the appearance of biography thrown together by an uninterested sixth-grader. There are many pictures, many of them poor quality photocopies, and there is even an article copied from an encyclopedia. It is rare to see sometihng of this poor quality, and it is always shameful.

2 out of 5 stars Too long, too short on real detail like dosage........2006-11-10

If only the author had used twenty pages to say what he has said in whole, long, 155 page book. It is too laborious to get essential facts- like optimum dosage for example is nowhere to be found easily, if at all. He knows his stuff, but must it take so long and why no summary page? Also it is a one size fits all- how do people survive all the diseases he outlines without this potion?

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book.......2006-06-19

If you've heard of alpha-lipoic acid and its being extremely helpful in treating diabetes, liver illnesses, mercury intoxications, or as an anti-oxidant, you may want to know more about it before taking it. This book, by Burt Berkson (MD, PhD) is an excellent answer to your worries. Berkson describes how he got to be interested by alpha-lipoic acid, it's safety record ("FDA"-approved in Germany for 50 years), it's uses, and perhaps most interesting, his views on medicine.

Not only does Dr. Berkson come across as a very competent and compassionate physician, especially in regards to lipoic acid, on which he is America's leading expert, he is also an outspoken critic of what he correctly sees as problems in modern American medicine. In the first chapter, he describes how he almost ended his career when he saved the life of a dying patient against the wishes of his boss, and would do it again. No insurance policy and few doctor's visits can provide the benefits of his invaluable candor, which serves to immunize his readers with a large and healthy level of cynicism towards medicine as it is practiced in America today.

One thing that this book does not contain is advice on what dosage of lipoic acid to ingest. This may be a sign of great wisdom; in Germany, where Dr. Berkson worked at the Max Planck Institute, and where lipoic acid has been on the market for decades, neurologists who exclude a potential heavy metal poisoning in their patients are not regarded with the sort of wonderment that mermaids and unicorns otherwise garner. Those with a heavy metal problem can suffer some extremely unwelcome side-effects if they take the sort of dosages that others easily tolerate. By not giving any advice on this subject, Dr. Berkson certainly isn't giving any bad advice on this subject.

                I heartily recommend this book.

I grew up in a smallish city with only one semi-authentic Chinese restaurant and a Chinese family friend who ran an Asian grocery. She recommended this cookbook to my mother, who then cooked for our family from it.

I have to say that I am spoiled to the day. So many of the recipes in here are much better than what you'd get at 99% of any typical Chinese restaurant. I now live in one of the largest cities in the U.S. and it's still hard for me to find food as good as this.

                5 out of 5 stars A long-time kitchen companion.......2001-10-15

I have owned this book for over 20 years. It is dog-eared, grease-stained and tattered. I really use this book and love the gentle inspiring quotes it contains. The recipes in it have "wowed" my guests and family for over twenty years. I cannot thank the authors enough for sharing this with the world. I am ordering another copy so that I can keep these treasured recipes for generations to come.

                5 out of 5 stars Madame Wong's Long-Life Chinese Cookbook.......2000-07-07

This is absolutely the best book on Chinese cooking! The recipes are easy to follow and most of the ingredients are easily found in your local supermarket. Each food section is prefaced with a short tid-bit on Chinese food history and culture. There is also regional information and a short comment at the beginning of each recipe. A glossary of cooking techniques, ingredients, and special hints is included at the front of the book and is extremely helpful. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to bring authentic Chinese food to their table.

5 out of 5 stars A book worth searching the earth for..........2000-05-21

I've been preparing authentic Chinese dishes from this book for over 20 years now. In fact, this is my second copy - I wore the original out after years of use and was lucky enough to get a second copy at a low-traffic book store. This book is so authentic, you'll have some real challenges finding and properly preparing the ingredients. But of course that is part of the fun, too. And oh what a sense of accomplishment when you serve your first Chinese feast and get rave reviews! Good Luck finding a copy - and good eating if you succeed!

                    Book Description

If you’re looking to develop a top-flight retriever, look no further than "Retriever Pups: The Formative First Year." In the conversational, intelligent writing style he was known for, "Field & Stream" gun dog columnist Bill Tarrant covers everything you need to know to train your pup during the critical first year, including a dogs pack instinct and how you can use that "need to bond" to your advantage in training. You’ll also learn the how-tos of: * choosing a puppy * introducing the pup to your home * "tinkling and dumping" * whistle training, hand signals, fetching, check cords, and much more.

2 out of 5 stars Training with hand signals.......2001-12-01

I bought this book in anticipating that it would inform me on what was the standard hand signals used for training pups to sit, stay, come, etc.. as it stated on the back cover of the book. After reading the whole book, I asked myself where did I read about the hand signals? I then went to the back index to check if I missed it, to my dismay, it referenced one page that had one sentence on arm waving.. and that's all. If the author had given as much discussion and illustrations on knot tying as he did on hand signals I might have thought the book had some merit. Overall the book was written choppy, and disjointed and I disliked the writer's style of first person, informal.
A would suggest you to forget this book and look into buying the book "Training Your Retriever" by James Lamb Free.

                    1 out of 5 stars Mis-information.......2001-11-29

I picked this book up and flipped open to a page where the author discusses health problems in retrievers. He compares the relatively healthy Flat-Coated Retriever to the Labrador, which has more health problems, and states correctly that the Labs have been bred with less care and attention to health concerns. HOWEVER, he states that the Labs and Flat-Coats are essentially the same dog except for the length of coat. This is absolutely not true. Although they originated similarly, both have been bred separately with the introduction of diverse breeds into their backgrounds. If the author has not bothered to research this, and makes incorrect statements based on his lack of research, how can I trust any information contained in the book?

                    2 out of 5 stars BEWARE BUYERS.......2001-08-04

Beware Lab owners or soon to be owners. If you are looking for the standard or even detailed book on training your Lab puppy, this is not the place to start. Although very creatively written and full of information (it seems), this book is not intended for the home domesticated pet you wish to train, but rather for the all outdoor hunting gun dog puppy you hope to train. This is fine and I'm sure por the purpose of making you Lab a wilderness soldier it leads you in the right direction, but had that been stated clearyly in the book discription I would of skipped it and saved myself the trouble of dissapointment and of returning a product. Precisely because I am looking for books on how to train my puppy who will live in a suburban town with a big yard, but not in middle America on a farm. So for my purposes of buying the book I feel I was misinformed so I gave it a 2 and had no interest in even reading beyond the first five pages, but if what you're looking for is "The Formative First Years (in hunting/gun dogs)" than you are in the right place. Good or bad? I guess you can give it a read and see if your puppy adapts, at least you'll be buying what you're looking for.

3 out of 5 stars Here is what I think.......2000-06-27

I am getting my new lab in a couple of weeks and I am new to this breed and retrieving. I was looking for a book to tell me detailed instructions on Lab training and retrieving. This book has a lot of information and is enjoyable to read. I read it in one day. I would have liked to of had more detailed successful step by step instruction, but I found that the author knows so much that he forgets that the new guy (me) doesn't and therefore he assumes to much. Eventhough it has a lot of information and great tricks I don't feel that I have enough information so that I could train a dog to retreive.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for a Happy Pup and Owner.......1999-12-28

This book covers very important information for the early teaching and training of the new pup and its new owner. It will build a relation with the pup that will accept training for the rest of its life. I wish that every one getting a new pup could have a copy of this book.

Mr. Tarrant had a special relation with dogs, his humane teaching and training makes any of his books a must for the serious retriever owner.

Instead, they showcase a host of fabulous features and magically unfold like a map, contain cards that slip into pockets, include pop-ups perfect for celebrating all types of occasions, and tell stories on a scroll. There's even one that unrolls like a movie. And kids will really enjoy choosing the style that's just right for what they want to say and do--so their message will come through loud and clear. I recently purchased this book and have found it to be a terrific resource for teaching children how to make beautiful books. The instructions and diagrams are easy to follow and very clear. My favourite is the T.V. book. The children in my class had a blast making these books.

Good ideas for books to make with kids, and also some basic ideas to further explore in more complex books.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Kids.......2006-06-04

I used several ideas in this book to teach an afterschool bookmaking class for K-3rd graders. The books are eye-catching and pretty simple to make, although I did a bit of prep work for the kids.

It was really wonderful to see how much the children loved their projects. They were extremely creative and innovative too, every child made the book their own by doing something interesting or different with the materials provided. This is in stark contrast to several adult bookmaking classes I've taken, where the adult students want to recreate the teacher's book EXACTLY.

Anyway, I highly recommend this book to anyone is willing to spend some time making books with kids. Children older than 4th grade MIGHT be able to use this book independently, depending on their experience and motivation.

Regardless, I think this book is wonderful for showing kids just how fascinating and rewarding it can be to make their very own books.

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun and an Incentive to Write.......2005-09-30

I have used this book in my writing workshops, and the parents quickly became involved right along with their children.

The book models range from extremely simple to complex. We often began with the Traveling Museum because this book requires only a single sheet of paper and scissors. The children enjoyed folding and unfolding it and trying to figure out where to begin their writing. The Exquisite Corpse model is more complicated, more fun, and even more appealing to the children's imaginations.

One aspect I really appreciate is the examples of books children had made. The books look as if they have been made by children and not a stylist. Perfect examples would have discouraged some of my younger students when their own books did not turn out exactly the way they expected.

The pages of Making Books also contains interesting examples and historical information about books and bookmaking. The hardcover book itself is bound with a transparent spine.

If you have childre who do not enjoy writing, try making books with them. The blank pages may inspire them to put words on paper, and you will enjoy the process of bookmaking as much as they will. Great project for a snowy or rainy day.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of FUN!!.......2005-02-22

This is a lot of fun for kids or adults. The instructions are step by step and are clearly written. They're also augmented by line drawing of how to do the folds and where to cut. Pictures of finished books are also shown so you can see how it should turn out. There are pictures of kids making these crafts throughout the book which makes it kid friendly. There are also ideas on themes for the books so it's a little more than just about the mechanics of folding but also ideas on content. The gypsy wagon for example has little cards that you put into each of the folds so she has you write a story in the cards first - by the end you have a really cool folding book that is interactive and tells a story. As I mentioned, this is great for kids of all ages (like me at 36 years young). I'm planning on making some booklets to incorporate into altered books and journals.

                    5 out of 5 stars Impressive .......2004-08-01

I enjoy arts and crafts and have ever since I was a kid. My mother was a working artist with an MA in studio arts and art education, and she had a genius for running a three ring circus in her own art classes. At any one time she could have up to two or three projects going for anything from K-12, college classes, private lessons, and special ed groups. Although she didn't actually teach me "art" her example, and encouragement, and the availability of almost every conceivable art material at home gave me an opportunity to try almost every medium. Ms Diehn is probably one of the few authors on arts and crafts that even remotely compares with my mother's influence.

Making Books that Fly, Fold, Wrap, Hide, Pop Up, & Turn is a marvelous example of a how-to book that not only gives one ideas but encourages one to come up with them on ones own as well. It's exuberance also encourages the learner to "go ahead and try it!" It combines information on how to do it, with history on the evolution of books and book art. The author gives simple instructions that any person who can read can understand and illustrations that are understandable enough that the pre-literate individual may put the instructions to work with only a little help.

More than anything the author has instilled a sense that art is a process, a fun process; it is what artists do. Like most processes, art is also something one experiences; it's a feeling. Like my mother, she shows that there are no real "rules" about what makes something a work of art; when one gets right down to it, art is just as the old hackneyed phrase has it, "just what you like." There is probably nothing worse than an art teacher who disparages the creativity of the students in her charge. I have friends who refuse to do anything remotely artistic because they had an art teacher that "thought anything less than Rembrandt was a waste of time!" as one of my former roommates said. How sad. In Ms. Diehn I find an artist like my mother, who had a lovely collection of student art, someone who loves the process and is able to convey her passion to the reader.

I hope to make several of the ingenious little books Ms Diehn illustrates for Christmas gifts for my friends. We've all got pretty much all we want by way of material goods-and anything they might like and don't have I probably couldn't afford anyway!-so these charming books will permit me to give them something of sentimental value. We've shared a lot of years together and what better way to preserve the memories!

                    An impressive little art book.

                    5 out of 5 stars Fun book.......2003-09-04

This book was written for younger readers, but I will find it very useful for my rubberstamping projects. I was glad to find easy to follow instructions for many kinds of books all in one book. Now I won't have to search through my magazines and printouts to find instructions for a project.

The books are fun and easy to do, but the results are impressive.

                    5 out of 5 stars A kid again.......2003-05-20

While this book is written for young people, these projects can easily translate into adult projects. The book includes some fundamental book making but also takes you, step-by-step, to more complex design, stitchery and concepts as you go from chapter to chapter. The coptic stitch is woven into pages 28-30 so subtly that you may not immediately realize its intricacy. What is fascinating about Books that Fly is its imagination and introduction to the wonder of books. It takes the reader on a magic tour of books.

                          Book Description

"In 1906 tribal sculpture was ""discovered"" by 20th century artists; these objects had suddenly become relevant because of changes in the nature of modern art itself. These two volumes comprise the first comprehensive scholarly treatment in half a century of the crucial influence of the tribal arts--particularly those of Africa and Oceania--on modern painters and sculptors. In this visually stunning and intellectually provocative work, 19 essays confront complex aesthetic, art-historical, and sociological problems posed by this dramatic chapter in the history of modern art. The main body of the book contains a series of essays on primitivism in the works of Gauguin, the Fauves, Picasso, Brancusi, the German Expressionists, Lipchitz, Modigliani, Klee, Giacometti, Moore, the Surrealists, and the Abstract Expressionists. It concludes with a discussion of primitivist contemporary artists, including those involved in earthworks, shamanism, and ritual-inspired performances."

                          Book Description

Many of the key achievements in art of the last 125 years have been worked out on paper. From pictorial investigations that expanded the possibilities of vision to the invention of entirely new kinds of media, drawing has been the perfect laboratory for avant-garde experimentation. Drawing from the Modern traces such groundbreaking innovation through the unparalleled holdings of the drawings collection of The Museum of Modern Art. Drawing has historically been understood as a mark or line on paper--the record of a bodily gesture, an inscription of the action of the hand, an expression of the mind. Since the 1880s, however, artists have sought to interrupt these seemingly unbreakable links between mark, hand, and imagination. Defying long-held definitions of drawing and rejecting traditional materials, modern artists invented a host of practices, altering not only the field of drawing but artmaking in general. Examining masterworks from the Museum's collection of nearly 7,000 works on paper in three chronological volumes beginning in the 1880s and continuing through today, Drawing from the Modern reconsider artists' repudiation of traditional drafting methods, assault on the use of the single sheet of paper, and introduction of new materials. Going to the heart of avant-garde innovation, all three volumes showcase new formal strategies, including collage, abstraction, chance, and the integration of text and image, as well as new subject matter, including the urban experience, the body, and identity. Volume I, presented here, spans the period from 1880 to 1940, and includes work by such artists as Jean Arp, Hans Bellmer, Paul Cazanne, Arshile Gorky, Georgia O'Keeffe, Odilon Redon, and Kurt Schwitters. Volume II, available in Spring 2005, will cover 1940 to 1975, and Volume III, available in Fall 2005, will bring us from 1975 to the present day.

I purchased book 1 & 2 from Amazon. The illustrations are far too small to be a professionally represented art book from MOMA I've decided to save my money rather than pay out for the 3rd edition. It sounds a good buy from its description but I don't consider this trilogy to be very satisfactory.

This is not a good artbook. The images are way too small to be satisfying. This book could have been great, but falls way short of its potential. Don't buy it, you will be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars DRAWING from the MODERN.......2006-12-27

DRAWING from the MODERN is the first of a three part series published by MOMA as catalogue to accompany the chronologically arranged exhibitions of their drawing collection; in part, celebration of the seventy fifth anniversary of the founding of the Museum.

This first book looks at the late nineteenth century through the beginning of the twentieth. Care and preservation of these drawings dictate that they are displayed infrequently, paper being a delicate medium, subject to fading, discoloration and brittleness. The publication of this series then allows us to have at hand a history of drawings seldom seen, and a visual education demonstrating how problems of that era both evolved and worked themselves out.

The introduction by Jodi Hauptman is broad and well worth reading. Aside from her entertaining "end of art" stories, she addresses artists and process leading to the dissolution of prevalent notions: relationship of "mark" to "ground", took new form; spatial notions of an orderly page, questioned; the element of chance, explored as process; the ego relationship of an artist to work, dissolving. New imagery happened: collage, abstraction, grids, enhanced emotions, metaphors of feeling, the sublime re-imaged. New subjects explored brutalities of war, notions of "city", identity, the spiritual, and the abstract.

As perhaps with all process of art, the uncertainty of change brought forth much that is new. The 139 plates of drawings both demonstrate and give testimony by leading artists of the time to new era in process. Drawing as subject matter is fascinating. To be expected, the book is well printed. Of course, what is book one without book two and three?

                          Book Description

In twentieth-century sculpture, one name towers above all others: Romanian-born Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957). This book accompanies a major retrospective exhibition of Brancusi's sculpture, drawings, and photographs, organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. Profusely illustrated throughout, with photographs by the artist and images culled from a wide range of archival sources, it is the most definitive work yet published on this influential artist. The authors provide a detailed reassessment of Brancusi's work, incorporating and extending the profound revisions in scholarship that have been taking place since the last major retrospective in 1969-1970. The three major essays present new information on such diverse issues as the sculptor's sources of inspiration, his formal approach, and the works' original presentation. Friedrich Teja Bach rejects the notion of Brancusi's oeuvre as hermetic, timeless, and pure, and examines instead the heterogeneous combinations of form and material that make Brancusi's works compellingly paradoxical. Margit Rowell explores the sculptor's place in the artistic climate of Paris in the 1910s and 1920s and his rejection of dominant styles and subject matter in favor of non-Western sources, particularly Asian art. Ann Temkin traces the history of Brancusi's American patronage during his lifetime by such influential collectors as John Quinn, Katherine Dreier, James Johnson Sweeney, and Louise and Walter Arensberg. The plate section features full-color reproductions of over 100 sculptures, with accompanying texts and visual references. In addition, 55 photographs by Brancusi in full-page duotone are shown for the first time alongside a major selection of his sculptures. There are also color and black and white reproductions of over forty of his drawings -- the richest documentation to date of this aspect of Brancusi's work -- as well as prefatory essays on the photographs and drawings, a chronology, and bibliographic and exhibition listings. Distributed for the Philadelphia Museum of Art

                          4 out of 5 stars Ethereal sculpture..........2001-07-14

In the Sucevita Cloisters in Sucevita Romania a painted vault depicts a repeated rhomboid design in the shape of a pillar. Wooden funery columns in Loman Cemetery in Hunedoara, Transylvania, Romania also exhibit the rhomboidal design, albeit on a much more articulated, differentiated, and elaborate scale.

The Romanina artist, Constantin Brancusi brought the image of the rhomboid pillar to his wonderful sculpture the "Endless Column." For Brancusi, the rhomboid pillar was the embodiment of the "axis mundi", the world's axis, the tree of life, the pillar of the sky, the pivot of the universe. He once referred to these columns as stairways to heaven. Peoples all over the world have used the metaphysical pillar to link the earth and the sun, the source of all life.

The pillar image may not seem as fresh today as it did when arrived on the Paris art scene in the early 20th Century, but today, many art critics view the Romanian-born Parisian sculptor Brancusi as a major player in the Modern art movement. Along with Picasso, Brancusi introduced the notion of using traditional art forms in Western art--including 'totem' poles or sacred pillars, stone plinths, and other metaphysical carvings.

BRANCUSI was published by the Philadelphia Museum of Art in conjunction with a major retrospective of his work. Brancusi apparently deplored analytic attempts to understand his art (he felt his works should simply be "enjoyed" i.e. the fill the viewer with joy). However, the book is filled with material designed to help the reader "understand" and to a great extent, I feel it accomplishes it's goal.

The layout includes photographs showing how Brancusi may have found inspiration for his many birds, heads, and other organic and metaphysical works, including his rhomboidal columns. For example, one series of photographs shows Brancusi's famous "Muse" series executed in marble, bronze, and other media, and includes possible sources of inspiration such as a photograph and self-portrait of Margit Pogany. The various "Muse" may have evolved from a semi-formal bust similar to those executed by more traditional artists to a fully evolved "essence" of "head" more akin to Modern art.

I recommend this book to anyone who desires a pictoral record of the artist at work as well as many flat representations of his wonderfully formed three-dimensional sculptures and carvings.

                          3 out of 5 stars Brancusi.......2002-11-08

I found this book a useful source of information about Brancusi. It captures the essence of Brancusi himself and what made his scultpures so good. I liked the fact that Brancusi's comments about his sculptures and how he made them were included in it, it somehow, made you feel more about the sculptures themselves. His life story is interwoven with his sculptures in this book, just as his life and art are interwoven. What I don't like about the book is the way it is set out. It is confusing and does not give you a clear picture, altogether. Although, the author said that he hoped the reader could get more out of it that way, it somehow does not work. It was set out, not in a chronological order but with specific titles like 'The Human World'. Overall, though I liked this book as it analyzed the sculptures very well however, it raises the issues of abstract scupture versus represational in Brancusi's art without actually stating anything about it??? I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Brancusi or would like to find out mroe information on him.

It's hard to imagine a more perfect depiction of love than "The Kiss," Constantin Brancusi's blocky stone sculpture of a nose-to-nose, belly-to-belly couple bound by encircling arms. Brancusi's powerful elemental shapes, carved from stone, wood, and marble, remain touchstones of modern art. But compared to contemporaries like Picasso and Modigliani, the Romania-born artist, who died in 1957, still remains something of an enigma. A slender, attractively designed book, Constantin Brancusi: The essence of things examines the artist's folkloric cultural and artistic heritage, his years in Paris and his revolutionary sculptural language. Along the way, the essayists attempt to refine the standard view of Brancusi as the poster boy for "truth to materials"-—the self-reliant peasant who struck a blow for modernism around 1907 by cutting directly into the stone block and responding to its unique qualities. Unfortunately, many of the scholarly adjustments to the legend come across as nitpicking footnotes that don't illuminate the bigger picture. (So what if his father was a small landowner in a poor Romanian village, not a real peasant? Why must we therefore view his self-identification with humble folk as a phony public image?) Yet the book contains key insights into Brancusi's stunning reductions of human and animal form, some from the artist himself. About his large marble "Fish" from 1926-—a smooth oval shape with a single facet—-he wrote, "When you see a fish . . . you think of its speed, its floating, flashing body seen through water. . . . Well, I've tried to express just that." While a reproduction of "Fish" appears in a small photo alongside the text, quite a few of the works discussed by the essayists are not illustrated at all. Even when Brancusi is supposedly boiled down to his "essence," as in this book, it seems a shame not to grant him a better showing. The 37 full-sized color plates correspond with the contents of an exhibition organized by the Tate Modern in London and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York (where it is on view through September 19, 2004). —Cathy Curtis

                                Book Description

Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957) was a towering figure among early 20th-century modern artists. Born in Romania, he worked in Paris for more than 50 years, but he became renowned worldwide. This new book, published to accompany an exhibition at Tate Modern, London, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, shows why his work, in which figurative elements were refined into ever purer, near-abstract forms, was so important in the development of modern sculpture.

This splendid book focuses on some 40 works that represent the essence of Brancusi's art. Essays focus on the themes and series in his work and the use of carving, as opposed to modeling in clay, that set him apart from his contemporaries. A selection of Brancusi's aphorisms, illustrated with photographs of the artist's studio, complete this thorough and up-to-date assessment of one of the 20th century's greatest artists.

Published to accompany the first expedition of skilled sculptor Constanti Brancusi (1876-1957), Constantin Brancusi: The Essence Of Things is a colorful showcase of his work with an extensive commentary on the pieces and their philosophy, his redefinition of the partial figure, and much more. A remarkable and collaborative work by Carmen Gimènez (Curator of 20th-Century Art at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York) and Matthew Gale (Curator at Tate Modern), Constantin Brancusi: The Essence Of Things strikes to the heart of the meaning found in the simplest of sculpted forms.

                                  Book Description

Description: "The Eye Club," unofficially founded around 1975, was the nickname given to the loose conglomeration of individuals who found themselves among the first new collectors of photography. Operating purely on instinct and the love of seeing, these few dozen people (including Sam Wagstaff, Andre Jammes and other now-legendary collectors) shared a distaste for established pantheons and veered instead toward the lesser-known, the anonymous, the outr or any photograph emanating sparks of electricity. Photography was their perfect vehicle and they were startled to find themselves in so much unchartered territory. The nearly 100 surprising pictures in The Eye Club have been assembled in a similar spirit of adventure. Photography persists as an unruly medium, and this book is comprised of an unruly group of photographs, brought together in the open-eyed spirit of the Eye Club to mark the 25th anniversary of San Francisco's esteemed Fraenkel Gallery. Printed with exceptional fidelity to the original prints, this publication assembles little-known images by some of the most important artists in the history of photography, chosen with an eye toward the unexpected and including as-yet-unpublished work by Diane Arbus, Chuck Close, Constantin Brancusi, Robert Adams, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Nan Goldin, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Andy Warhol, among many others. A significant number of works by "Photographer Unknown" are included among gems by Richard Avedon, Nadar, Andreas Gursky, Lee Friedlander, Alfred Stieglitz, Adam Fuss, Helen Levitt, Paul Outerbridge and Robert Frank. The combination is fresh and surprising.
