Book Description
"A compelling biography of the eccentric genius."- Discover.
Kurt Gödel was an intellectual giant. His Incompleteness Theorem turned not only mathematics but also the whole world of science and philosophy on its head. Shattering hopes that logic would, in the end, allow us a complete understanding of the universe, Gödel's theorem also raised many provocative questions: What are the limits of rational thought? Can we ever fully understand the machines we build? Or the inner workings of our own minds? How should mathematicians proceed in the absence of complete certainty about their results? Equally legendary were Gödel's eccentricities, his close friendship with Albert Einstein, and his paranoid fear of germs that eventually led to his death from self-starvation. Now, in the first book for a general audience on this strange and brilliant thinker, John Casti and Werner DePauli bring the legend to life.
Customer Reviews:
Un understandable overview of Godel and his completeness theorem.......2006-09-14
The main result of Godel's Completeness Theorem is that in arithmetic, there are true statements that can never be proven to be true in the system of arithmetic. Using this as a base system, this means that in any system equal to or greater than arithmetic in complexity, there will be true statements that cannot be proven to be true in the system. This result has been used by many people to argue for or against many things.
I have seen it used to argue for the existence of God.
"According to Godel's theorem, there are things that are true that cannot be proven to be true within the system of human thought. God is one such thing, therefore God exists."
I have seen it used to argue against the possibility of artificial intelligence (AI).
"According to Godel's theorem, there are things that are true that cannot be proven to be true within the system of programmable human thought. Humans take advantage of these unprovable truths, which makes intelligence. Since this advantage can never be programmed, AI is impossible."
I have suggested on more than one occasion that the people making these arguments need to spend more time studying both logic and what Gödel really concluded. For example, they could read this book.
It presents a brief biography of Kurt Gödel. In his later years he was quite eccentric and reclusive, however in his early years he apparently was quite a ladies man. Certainly Gödel was a genius; Albert Einstein himself openly expressed his admiration for Godel's intelligence. I was pleased to see the authors spend as much time as they did describing Gödel in his earlier years. So many other commentators spend so much time on his social difficulties that his achievements become overshadowed.
A complete explanation of his main results is also expressed in terminology that almost everyone can understand. There are few formulas; simple algebra is all that is needed to understand all of the mathematical symbolism used in the book. If I was teaching a course in popular mathematics, it would have to include Godel's Completeness Theorem and this is the book I would select for that section.
An abridged version of Hofstadter's book. .......2004-12-29
Author shows a great skill in Chapter Two and Three to explain a crux of famous theorem in a very succinct language without using mathematical terms. Also a short biography of Godel's strange life explains: why he died of paranoia; why he hated Austria; why he was suffering a guilt of not producing enough academic result in Princeton.
As the author acknowledges, many metaphors used in this book overlaps with the Douglas Hofstadter's Pulitzer-winning book. However, as many other books for past twenty years, the author presents a theorem in a way that is easily misinterpreted. In p11, he says "Essentially, what Godel showed is that no kind of mathematics is ever going to be comprehensive enough to express fully the everyday notion of truth." And then, the author spends a great deal of pages on AI and computer.
As far as I know, Godel's theorem mentions nothing about "truth in daily life" or computer. Godel's theorem applies only in a strictly circumscribed sphere, i.e., first-order logic. For example, Euclidean geometry is not imcomplete, and the higher-order logic doesn't produce Russel-type paradox. So, what we cannot speak of we must pass over in silence.
Also, author asserts in p71 that Wittgenstein's shift to "sociocultural position" later in his life, but he failed to mention that Wittgenstein did describe his thought about Godel's theorem in his "Remarks on the Foundations of Mathematics".
Biography: no -- Look at his great theorm: YES!.......2003-10-19
I got to look at the book at a bookstore before I bought it so I knew I wasn't getting a biography. This book is a look at his theorem with comments about his life thrown in to put the work into some human context. For a thurough description of the theorem with a gentle human touch this is the book for you. Casti et al. does a great job of making tough ideas readable. If you want to know more about the theorem that turned mathematics on its head this is it. Not perfect (less talk about cake :-) ) but fun, readable, educational, A shame it is out of print.
Not the real Gödel ?.......2003-04-22
Sorry, but this book was somewhat a disappointment for me. The authors for the most part keep personal life and work of Gödel separated, instead of seeing them as a unity. A biography has to be the best of both worlds in my opinion. That's what makes the work of a biographical writer a difficult task. Maybe one of the two authors did the biographical part, the other one the mathematical ? And of course, everything about Gödel is great, brillant and alltogether grand. I am missing a critical view on his lifestyle and his view on music e.g.. Appearently the author of the biographical part was so in awe of Gödel, that he didn't dare to critisize anything about Gödel. Ironic, since Gödel stands for the idea, that you are allowed and even have the obligation to question everything to get to the bottom of the truth of things.
I am still waiting for the real biography of Kurt Gödel.
Not really a biography, but very good nonetheless.......2002-10-24
I would agree with other reviewers who point out that Casti and DePauli's book really doesn't work as a biography. While there are some interesting biographical factoids, they are offered in such a disjoint manner that it is hard to see this book as a good biography of Kurt Godel.
However, as a book that gives an accessible overview of Godel's work, it is very effective. The best parts of the book deal with Godel's Theorem and Turing's Halting Problem. While there are other books out there that do a good job of making both those topics accessible to a wide audience, Casti and DePauli's treatment is worth a read because they also offer some unique insights not (easily) found elsewhere.
But the best part of this book is the second to the last chapter that gives an accessible account of Algorithmic Information Theory (aka 'Kolmogorov Complexity') ... especially Gregory Chaitin's work on the randomness of natural numbers. While Chaitin has also written some accessible works on this topic, Casti and DePauli does a great job of explaining this topic to a wider audience as well as showing the connections between AIT and Godel/Turing. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book.
A very interesting and insightful thing that Casti and DePauli did was to periodically re-define Godel's Theorem in terms of Turing's Halting Problem, Chaitin's work, and from other interesting angles.
The book is not without fault. Besides the rather haphazard biographical details, the chapters dealing with some of Godel's other projects (physics, mysticism, etc.) were rather poorly written. Also, Casti and DePauli did a very bad job with citations/suggestions for further reading. E.g., they often cite to other works, or suggest readers consult other sources for further details, and then do NOT provide those sources in the bibliography. There are some other examples of sloppy editing and writing that would be hard to point out to those who haven't actually read the book.
Having said all of that, the book deserves 5 stars because of the material on the incompleteness of mathematics, solvability/computability, random nature of mathematics, and some of the biographical trivia (to the extent that they are offered). My recommendation is that people buy the paperback if they are interested in AIT, mathematical logic, and theoretical computer science, and want those topics dealt with in an accessible and interesting manner without sacrificing on insights.

Book Description
When we first started down the baby-making path, we thought we'd be pregnant in no time. We'd just toss out our birth control pills and before we knew it, we'd be rocking our little one to sleep. Little did we know what was in store for us, or the energy it would take to face all of the crazy, unpredictable and (sometimes) irrational emotions we felt along the way. Neither did our husbands. Sound familiar? If your idea of foreplay is screaming, "I'm ovulating; it's time!!!" to your oblivious husband... If your ovulation schedule is ruling your life and every trip to the drug store includes a bulk purchase of pregnancy sticks... If you're running out of answers to the chronic questioning from the pregnancy paparazzi about your plans for parenthood ... Then this is the book for you. Whether it's been three months or three years since you've been trying, the more complicated and overwhelming the process becomes. The Conception Chronicles shares candid humor, hold-nothing-back banter and practical advice on everything that goes along with trying to start a family: from dealing with your fertile friends to the battery of tests you may have to face; from surviving "sex on demand" to navigating the ins and outs of high-tech fertility treatments. This book will guide you through the emotional journey to motherhood, offering compassion and laughter like only your best girlfriends can. And we promise you'll never hear us say, "Relax and you'll be pregnant in no time."
Customer Reviews:
Great for a non-medical view!.......2007-08-16
When my husband and I first started talking about trying, I wanted a book that was going to give me a more light-hearted view of the conception process. I was pleased when I found this book! I have read most of it now, and it's informative, but keeps me laughing. If you are looking for something that will help you analyze your fertility with steps and procedures and all that medical mumbo-jumbo, this is not the book for you! The only downfall is that the last third of the book is all about infertility treatments, and doesn't fit my interests at the moment.
Great!.......2007-08-06
Thank God these women wrote this book. Until i read this I thought I was the only one experiencing some of these things or feelings. At least I know (or am reminded) there are other women out there who feel like freaks too. I would have liked to know how things turned out for them though. I did do a lot of back and forth to review things or skipped portions that didn't apply, etc. but since part of me felt like I was going through it w/ them (or them w/ me), I wish I knew how things turned out for them. But, for those of us whose girlfriends didn't have the same conception problems as us, this book was great!
Its pretty good!.......2007-06-26
This book is a really cute book and you learn about your body in a light hearted kind of way. After getting half way through the book I realized I wasn't learning anything new that I didn't already know. I really like Taking Charge of Your Fertility. Its a huge book filled of so much information and a book I can always refer to. If you want to get a book that is easy to read and you know nothing about your body and your cycles then this is the book for you.
GREAT!!.......2007-05-14
This book is smart and funny! A very candid look at the joys and struggles of trying to get pregnant!
Just what I needed.......2006-12-30
My husband and I have been trying for nearly 2 years and I was feeling quite alone in the process. This book helped me not feel so alone. There are other women out there struggling to have a child and the feeling I was having were common and normal. It gave some simple insight to the different treatments. I recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with infertility (took me a while to say that word). You aren't alone.
Book Description
This delightful cookbook celebrates the glories of southern baking, with 300 recipes for the breads, biscuits, cakes, pies, cookies, and sweets that have been the pride of southern cooks for generations.
From his first chapter on cornmeal--with recipes for dumplings, hushpuppies, and four styles of spoonbread--to his delicious array of desserts--including persimmon pudding, lemon chess pie, and pecan cake with caramel icing--Bill Neal interweaves fascinating bits of culinary history with a native's knowledge of the cooking secrets of the rural South. He demystifies beaten biscuits, revives such southern standbys as baps and bannocks, and freshens up old favorites such as peach cobbler and fruitcake. Passing on the traditions of the southern kitchen, Neal pays tribute to the richness of the region's heritage.
Biscuits, Spoonbread, and Sweet Potato Pie was first published in 1990.
Customer Reviews:
Southern baking.......2005-09-27
Bakers who have exhausted BILL NEAL'S SOUTHERN COOKING will find a mother lode of Southern baking recipes in BISCUITS, SPOONBREAD, and SWEET POTATO PIE. I agree with another reviewer who praises the recipe for "A Good White Loaf." It's one of the recipes I return to when I absolutely want to be sure that the bread is going to come out perfectly (Thanksgiving, e.g.).
Interesting, But Mediocre.......2004-12-07
It seems that all of the best American baking recipes are from the deep South: sweet potato pie, pecan pie, baking powder biscuits, cornbreads, and fruit cobblers. Any baking book full of southern recipes is promising, but this one is disappointing and nothing more than another, run-of-the-mill baking book, although it is a rather interesting collection of recipe clippings. The author's intention seems to be that of capturing the state of southern baking before disappearing before a tidal wave of supermarket breads and nation-wide coffee chain stores; he makes a good but not entirely successful run at it. It is a fascinating collection of ideas, principles, and anecdotes, but prospective home bakers searching for old fashioned, simple, hearty, and fool proof recipes will be disappointed. There is plenty of sizzle (a potentially valuable collection of old fashioned baking recipes), but little steak (solid, good, reliable recipes along with many helpful hints that you will want to do).
For the most part, this baking book is a collection of recipe clippings scotch-taped together in one book. The recipes range from 200 year old cookbooks to modern-day, womens' magazines, with the latter predominating; mostly, the recipes are cribs from other baking books. It would not be unfair to accuse the author of not really testing many of the recipes; some are anecdotal stories rather than modern recipe instructions as such. It takes an experienced baker to sift through the chaff in this book to find the few precious gems; they do exist, but you will have to hunt for them. The recipes specify cups rather than weight for flour, and the instructions are very informal, so this book is not that easy to bake from.
It has chapters on: corn, biscuits, waffles, yeast, British, whole grain, candy, fruit, frozen, custards, cookies, petit fours, pies, and cakes.
A Real Keeper.......2002-01-05
I have a several thousand cookbook collection - spanning some 40+ years. I have read each one and KNOW them. This book grabs your attention and holds it. I have a Top 100 Cookbooks (my very, very favorite ones) bookcase. A book has to pass rigid cooking/baking tests to get there. This book is there!!
Note: I have had FUN doing this all these years.
The recipe for "A Good White Bread" is about as tasty as white bread can ever be. (Hint: Make 1 BIG loaf with it) The "Pain de Babeurre" rolls are probably the best we have ever had. They raise big, fat, and are very soft inside. Where do I stop?
Get the book - trust me, you won't be sorry!
Baking, Sweet and Southern.......2000-09-14
Bill Neal was one of the first cookbook authors I am aware of to incorporate culinary history, as well as cultural lore and perfectly chosen old photos into his "how-we-cook-it-in-the-South book." Thus, in BISCUITS, et al. he offers a compendium of history and culture truly representative of the Southern U. S., not merely a cliched pastiche of collarded, chitterlinged, cornbreaded and mint-juleped facts and details to pad out the receipes. Native American is distinguished from Colonial cookery, African-American from Appalachian, and Creole from Charleston as the author takes pains to convey, for example, why cooks in different regions of the South tossed different ingredients in with the cornmeal to produce their distinctive cornbreads--then he reproduces each of the recipes! At the same time Neal weaves the various influences together where appropriate; for example, from the introduction to Sweet Potato Yeast Bread: "This Mississippi bread has just about everything going for it . . . delicious and nutritious. . . Similar recipes are published in local cookbooks throughout the Southern coastal regions, wherever blacks live in large numbers. The bread is most likely of African and West Indian heritage [which use other] starchy tubers such as cassava, tanyah (elephant's ear), yams, and arrowroot." Reading this book is a pleasure unto itself, and all the recipes I have tried are outstanding. Specifically, the Appalachian Corn Bread cooked up as small fritters on a cast-iron griddle was food for the gods! (Hint: I snuck in one secret ingredient.) Bill Neal, if you read this review, e-mail me at mammamia8@aol.com so that I can tell you the secret ingredient (and ask you to marry me). P.S. Also, have you published other books since '95? Next on my list to read: Through the Garden Gate and Gardeners Latin. Signed, Mirabila X.(Oh, don't forget to give me the password, being my last name, so I'll know it is really you!)
The BEST cook book I have ever had the pleasure of reading!.......1998-01-22
If you are a fan of quality cook books, for their reading pleasure as well as their content, this is THE book for you! Without a doubt the BEST cook book I have ever, ever, ever had the pleasure of delving into!
Book Description
This is a delightful book for dog lovers of all ages! Fun for people with a new puppy or new dog as well as those with "existing family pets," it is a wonderful way to record memorable times and organize the many great photos one has of their best friend.
"Finding You," "Homecoming" and "Words & Phrases" are just a few of the fun sections to complete (all of which have space for photos)! Compare what you wanted to teach your dog to what they actually learned. Record what your dog has trained you to do! Highlight things you do that wag your dog's tail. Coming home probably tops the list! How well did you do in obedience school? Was your dog the valedictorian or simply average?
There are twelve pages exclusively for pictures with a variety of headlines such as "Silly Moves," "Romping & Rolling" and "Unconditional Love." The last two pages of the book, "Love Notes," feature ruled lines to recount more special memories.
This book holds up to 65 photographs (depending on size and orientation). The book becomes personalized when one places their dog's photo on the title page, which then shows through on the front cover! The pages are a beautiful, heavy stock sturdy enough to hold lots of photographs. The simple, clean design is eye-catching and intentional...allowing your photos to be the highlight of the book.
A donation from each book sold will be made to The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in honor of all of the wonderful dogs in our world.

Thanks again Kathy
Helping the Healing.......2002-09-12
Our four-year-old dog died this summer, and our children were having a hard time dealing with it. I found this book, and was able to put a wonderful journal of her role in our family, from the day she was born to her last days with us. It has thoughtful sections that just about anyone can fill in about their dogs. Now, when we're sad, we turn to the book and it keeps her with us. It would have been great to have when she was alive, and I'm getting one for the other dog.
Really great 'baby book' for your 4-legged children.......2002-07-07
This is a wonderful book for anyone who loves their dogs as children. I bought one for our 3 year old adopted beagle, and am getting one for our daugher-in-law's birthday for their rottie. You can personalize it as you wish, and I have included comic clippings (Marmaduke, Mutts, etc.) that are appropriate along with the photos and have created the beginning of a great book for my best friend that I will keep forever.
My Dog's Life a photo journal of unconditional love.......2002-04-30
What a fun book. It is perfect for all ages, from little ones with their first puppy, to empty nesters. We picked one up when we got our new Puppy Toby, and have started to fill out the pages in detail. We wish we had one for Alex, our 14 year old Golden, that passed on in November. Many Thanks to Nancy Dewar and Marble.

Fun!.......2006-10-05
I like that Willow provided a quick outline at the beginning of each chapter introducing you to items needed and provided a reason to use a certain item over another. She provided resources to find the items needed to construct the crafts. She didn't just provide a list and throw you to the wind to find stuff as so many books do; especially if you aren't knowledgeable in that craft and have absolutely no idea what a certain item is or where to to find it. I also like that she explained how to do something. She didn't assume you were already proficient in a certain craft and only give barebones outlines. I do wish however that she used color photos all through the book illustrating each craft. I'm one of those people that need to see pictures to understand what's being talked about. I can't just vision it in my head. There were full color plates of several projects in the middle of the book and that helped a little. There were black and white photos throughout the book but they were kind of dark.. I also wish that more sewing projects were included, such as appliques, crochet and knit. There are so many great crafts and I have a whole list I can't wait to do. I have started a Green Man sweatshirt for my mother for Yule as well as the Pennsylvania Dutch Hex Sign to hang in my home. I have already completed the Simple Earthen Chalice. I even used a homemade low-fire barrel kiln that I learned to make in "Crafts for the Spirit" by Ronni Lundy. Overall I am very pleased with this purhcase. This is a definite must have book.
I couldn't choose!.......2006-03-27
What a delightful book. For the Witch with a crafty bent or for the one who wants to try creating for the first time, this book has something for everyone. The book boasts 12 different chapters. Each chapter focuses on a different craft, with projects ranging from the very easy to the more advanced.
Whether you are into sewing or gardening, you will find a project to please your creative urges. I think the only thing I didn't like about this book was the fact that I couldn't decide which project I want to start on first. In fact, I am still deciding between the Topsy-Turvy Goddess doll and the cross-stitch Green Man sweatshirt.
The directions for each project are concise and easy to follow. Patterns for those projects that require patterns are included right in the instructions, something I appreciate. Many craft books have the patterns in a separate section in the book requiring you to hunt them down. At the end of each chapter is a list of resources for any of the materials you might need for the crafts. Among the resources are names and URLs to books and websites for more information on that chapter's focus.
The best part of the book is the 8 pages of full color photography of finished projects. The pictures are cross-referenced to the pages with the craft's directions. I only hope that my finished pieces are as photo worthy when I finally choose my first one!

Crafty Witches Unite!.......2005-12-09
You have nothing to lose but your solitude. This is a wonderful book, full of projects for all levels of ability. Polson is a talented author, a creative craftswoman, and a trustworthy source of information on many topics important to modern Pagans. Well worth purchasing and making room for in your book collection.
Great variety!.......2005-06-22
I was a little nervous about getting this book at first, even considering how many good reviews it got. I was worried that it would not contain enough variety. But when I opened it, I was pleasantly surprised! There are many different types of crafts including making dolls (useful in teaching stories to kids), woodcarving, making mosaic stepping stones, stained glass, and much more! There are ample projects for people in any stage of crafting experience, from beginners to experts. It even includes a few patterns that can be copied and enlarged. This is a great book for anyone who would like to be more involved in pagan-themed arts and crafts!
Inspiring!.......2005-03-23
This is the book creative Pagans have been waiting for. This charming book is full of easy-to-do projects that can be used for mundane and magickal purposes.
Long-time witch Willow Polson gives us twelve chapters covering candles, jewelry, sewing, woodworking, paper, painting, pottery, glass, and more. Each chapter provides an introduction to that craft, a list of supplies needed, various projects, and resources. It should be noted that most of the required materials are readily available at any craft store. You can make your own wreaths, incense burners, and sun-catchers with Polson's detailed, step-by-step instructions. She also provides tips, techniques, diagrams, and black and white and color photos.
Budget-conscious Pagans and Witches will be amazed at what they can create with a few inexpensive materials. You can make your own circlet, staff, and Goddess sculpture. Pagan parents and their kids will delight in making Yule ornaments, treasure boxes, and the wonderful Persephone/Demeter Topsy-Turvey doll. With clear instructions, photos, and the author's encouraging tone, Witch Crafts is great for all ages and levels of skill.

What a great book!!!.......2007-10-12
When I bought "Dandelion", I wondered why the title? After reading the book I realized Catherine's story is a lot like the little dandelion plant, it's beautiful flower on a long steam and a strong resilient foundation. The dandelion also possesses the ability to flourish in almost any environment, hostile or nourishing. Catherine's story is very much like the dandelion she survived the hostile environment of her childhood; she flourished and sprang forth as a beautiful flower. This is a wonderful book, filled with inspiration from a triumphant spirit. Even if she had left out the famous faces scattered among the pages this would be a book well worth the read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am going to buy a few copies to give for Christmas.
A Dandelion that is not just fluff.......2007-10-09
If there's one book you read this year - make it "Dandelion" by Catherine James. This autobiography is not only heart rendering but it is also insightful, funny and will absolutely touch the place inside all of us that just wants to be loved. From a childhood that no one should ever endure to her life as a young mother, Wilhelmina model and her illustrious rock & roll romances; Catherine tells her story with such candor that when you finish you feel like you have a new best friend. This is a true survivors story that is an absolute must read.
much more than you bargained for!.......2007-10-09
This is a beautiful story of a beautiful soul. Charming, poignant & uplifting. The author transcends the turbulent people in her life & her ever changing circumstances. It's very entertaining & inspirational.
Read it, you will find much, much more than you bargained for!

Makes you love that unusual yellow flower.......1998-12-09
This book is a wonderful array of recipes, stories from people's experiences with that awesome little yellow flower that most people would like to obliterate, and whispy illustrations done by an extremely talented artist. Joanne has such a wonderful flow to her writing and you begin to love that dreaded yellow flower that pops up in our yards. I started the book and couldn't put it down. I wish everyone could read it and enjoy the many aspects of this lovely plant.
Beautiful...lyrical--fall under Joanne's spell!.......1998-11-21
Joanne Henry has an enchanting writing style. She will bewitch all who read Dandelions Are Free easily and completely. One will NEVER regard the dandelion in the same way again. Joanne is a gifted writer and researcher, a gentle soul whose own tender feelings about the plant are obvious on every page. Yet her writing also invites the the reader to share in the dandelion's special magic. I feel privileged to have my own work wrapped within hers.
Delightful book!.......1998-11-14
I bought my first copy of this book at a book fair in New York. The lyrical text of the introduction invites you into the delightful world of dandelions and excites your curiosity about the plant. I bought 3 as gifts for cherished friends who adore the book.
Great recipes and a bit of nostalgia!.......1998-04-04
A delightful book! For the first time in years I enjoyed a dandelion salad this spring--inspired by these recipes. I'm looking forward to attempting dandelion wine later, my only problem being which wine recipe to choose. Maybe I'll try a couple! The drawings are enchanting. Besides being useful the book has a nostalgic flavor bringing back memories of my childhood.
Rain, rain go away so I can pick some dandelions today!.......1998-04-02
I grew up in Israel and altho we had dandelions I never paid them any mind. A friend gave me this book and it's changed my mind about this common plant. Who would have thought there was so much to be desired about one of our wildest weeds? As soon as it stops raining I'm going out to gather some fresh leaves and make a salad using a recipe from the book. The poems are great, too. I am amazed at what is in this book.

Informative yet Unnerving.......2007-01-10
Good information but a bit unnerving when I finally realized many of the pictures were taken with the fetus OUTSIDE its mother (and it'd probably die soon). Knowing this, I'd rather turn to more positive thoughts and read something else. I'd prefer the book without the pictures.
A bit disappointed.......2000-06-08
While there were some nice pictures and helpful information I was abit disappointed with the book in general. It was short (92 pages of large text),with no color pictures and just didn't seem like that helpful of a book for a first time mother. The book was first published in 1962 with an update in 1982 and I'm sure there have been quite a few new discoveries that would be quite informative for a first time mother since then. I felt like I was reading a high school biology book. OK for what it was but I'd not recommend it.
A photo of your baby..........2000-05-26
I had this book when I was pregnant with my youngest son. I flat wore that book out! It was my constant companion, and I remember sitting there looking at those pictures and imagining my own baby at that stage. It was like a prenatal photgraph album of my baby. I recommend this book to every pregnant woman, whether it's your first baby or your fifteenth. Hand it on to your daughters, and when it wears out, replace it. Beautiful.
Fascinating.......2000-01-21
I've read several books pertaining to early development and this one really stands out. The chronicle of human development is illustrated with astonishing clarity.

The Widows Resource.......2007-08-23
Probably should be re-named 'The Widows Resource If You've Been Left With A Lot Of Money And Don't Know What To Do With It'....I was hoping to find information on how to handle the loss of ones major source of income without becoming a bag lady......this is definately not the book for that. A good book though if you actually have money to worry about.
Most helpful book on the subject I have found available.......1999-05-06
Concise, easy to understand information, for people during the most vulnerable time of their lives. This book has been a tremendous resourse for me as I produce my documentary on the same subject.

Book Description
Born in Chongqing, China, in 1927, the well-known sculptor Tommy Jieqin Wu began his journey through life. This courageous autobiography takes a remarkable first-hand look inside China and at her human rights abuses. As a child, he grew up above his familys movie house, until the Japanese invaded in 1937. He later joined the Chinese Air Corps and eventually trained in the United States of America. Upon his return to China, he became entangled in the civil war and was soon labeled a Rightist. While only an artist, he suffered years of political persecution, prison, and separation from his family.

The story of an incredible life.......2000-09-28
I was so pleased to finally read Tommy Wu's completed life story that takes you through the turbulent times of recent Chinese history. I was especially delighted because I met Tommy at the Central Institute of Fine Arts in 1987 and read his incomplete manuscript and wondered how he would get his story out. Tommy is an incredible person and a delightful storyteller. His book will share the pain, suffering, and turmoil of life in China but his bubbling optimism brings hope for the future. This book is a must read for anyone interested in China and the spirit of survival.
