Book Description

This is the second of three books chronicling the author's life during his three-year enlistment in the US Army. This book describes the author's Army experiences from August, 1967, when he left electronics school at Fort Gordon, Georgia, through December, 1968, when he was transferred to Vietnam from an aviation maintenance center at Mannheim, West Germany. Repairing helicopter electronic communication and navigation systems, repairing airborne navigation radios and serving as a lieutenant colonel's aide are thoroughly described. Included are extensive descriptions of an Army soldier's lifestyle while stationed in Europe in that era as are the author's numerous travel experiences.

5 out of 5 stars Thinking about the Army?.......2004-04-15

Anyone who is thinking about enlisting in the service should read Richard Stahl's book about his experiences in the Army. This is an interesting account of the year that the author spent in Europe while serving at various duty stations in Germany. The book also relates the author's experiences during his free time spent in Spain. A well written documentation of a year in the life of Mr. Stahl. I enjoyed the fact that the story was real and written for people like me to read.

    Book Description

Over the course of a dozen years, Scottish plant collector Isobel Wylie Hutchison (1889–1982) explored northern latitudes from the Lofoten Islands of Norway to the far reaches of the American Aleutians. To achieve her goals, she traveled by any means available, from rowboats in Greenland to trading schooners and coast-guard vessels in Alaska. When necessary, she journeyed by snowshoe or sled in pursuit of her botanical specimens, accompanied only by strangers who served as guides. In Flowers in the Snow, Gwyneth Hoyle paints a vivid portrait of a woman gloriously out of the step with the conventions of her time.

      Book Description

From two pediatric allergy and asthma specialists comes an important book that explains how to diagnose and treat your child's allergy and asthma problems. Allergies and asthma- particularly in children-are serious health problems in the United States. Over 15% of the population suffers from allergies and/or asthma, almost all of which have their beginnings in childhood. In this timely and informative book, parents will learn: why children with allergies are sometimes misdiagnosed as having other ailments; how to use alternative treatments and holistic remedies; simple methods to allergy-proof their homes and pets; the 10 things parents do that make their children's allergy symptoms worse; and much more.

2 out of 5 stars This is EXACTLY what your doctor tells you.......2007-09-13

I found this book to be a regurgitation of what I had already been told by two pediatricians regarding my 4 year olds recently diagnosed asthma. Nothing new here at all. I was surprised that the doctors do not seem to acknowledge the large role diet plays in a condition such as asthma. I am not a doctor, however, even I can see the significant link between diet and health. Since my son's asthma diagnosis a month ago, I have dramatically restructured his diet and began supplementing him with magnesium. Guess what?! My son has shown significant improvement over the past 3 weeks! Even his allergies seem to have improved. I am proud to report my son hasn't taken a single asthma or allergy medication in two weeks. If you are resigned to a life of medication and supporting the multi-million dollar pharmaceutical company's, then this is the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Hoping for more information I could use at home to help..........2006-03-09

This book is a good book to help define and aid in the understanding in causes of Asthma and different allergies, but I was hoping for more information that I could use at home to help reduce chances for asthma attacks and my son's allergy induced asthma.

4 out of 5 stars For your child's sake, please read this review.......2005-05-26

There is significant evidence that the root cause of many, if not most, cases of asthma (and many allergies as well) is deficiency of magnesium. This fact is discussed in detail by Dr. Carolyn Dean in her excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Dr. Dean recommends that all asthma sufferers take supplemental magnesium daily -- 600 mg daily for addults (proportionally less, according to their body weight, for children). People with asthma who follow Dr. Dean's advice about daily magnesium supplementation often improve dramatically even if they have continued to struggle with asthma under other treatments which omit magnesium supplementation. For your child's sake, please read Dr. Dean's important book and follow her advice regarding daily magnesium supplementation. It may well be the most important thing you will ever due to relieve this terrible ailment. By the way, although a variety of magnesium supplements are available, and beneficial, chelated magnesium -- which is readily available in most health food stores -- is the most effective.

5 out of 5 stars New kind of medical book.......2003-12-29

This is a different kind of medical book from any I've ever looked at. The rest are predominantly lists and checklists, and dull as well. This one not only dispenses very helpful advice but gets inside the heads of children who have these conditions, their parents, and explains theory and practice behind the medical specialty itself. Some of the anecdotes about how non-specialists can botch treatment are shocking. Some if it is also quite funny. Also, it's nice to read a book by doctors who still clearly love the practice of medicine and doing good for people, in spite of all the changes that have happened to the profession in recent years. This book should make many lives better and even save some.

5 out of 5 stars Every parent should have this book.......2003-11-12

Excellent reference guide. Every parent who has a child with allergies should have this book. A very valuble resource!

                  Book Description

Anthony Wolf’s groundbreaking book focuses on the most difficult challenges of parenting post-infant to pre-teen children—setting limits and making demands. Dr. Wolf covers all the class parenting problem areas: family disputes, including who’s in charge (Mom or Dad), sibling fights, and divorce; day-to-day issues such as bedtime, grumpiness, and public tantrums; and problems that might not be problems after all, like aggression, lying, and spoiling. Positive, loving, and, above all, effective, this guide offers parents what they want most: more time to enjoy their children.

                  Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is a MUST READ Book.......2003-03-15

I have read a lot of parenting books, this one is the best by far. It was as if he stepped in my home and saw our day to day interactions with our kids, and he gave specifics on how to solve each problem. Great Book, I wished I had read this long before now, it would have more peaceful at home.

5 out of 5 stars The best parenting book I ever read, and I've read a LOT.......2002-12-10

Without a doubt, this is the best book I have ever read on handling children. I've read all the classics, and each of them taught me little bits here and there, but this was the only book where every single chapter spoke to me. Not only is the advice terrific, but Wolf gives explanations for some behaviors that otherwise didn't make any sense.

Did you ever pick up the phone when your child was playing quietly? You know what happens, right? Your child suddenly needs your assistance THIS MINUTE and will make it impossible for you to have a conversation. The same thing happens if you get a visitor or run into someone when your child was otherwise perfectly happy. Anthony Wolf tells you why your child does this. And better yet, he tells you what you can do to STOP this!

While implementing his strategy takes some self-control, it is not difficult, and there isn't a lot to remember. The important thing is to be consistent and use his approach whenever you deal with tantrums or interruptions. He calls this approach Robo-Parent. When it's clear that the child is just trying to keep you hooked into an argument, you stop talking and remove the child to his room. At our house we just say "Goodbye." It's kind of like a time-out in that it resets everyone's mood, but there's no clock. The child can come back whenever he's ready to behave. Usually my kids just go to their room and come right back out. It's not a punishment.

In fact Wolf clearly disapproves of punishing children, because he says shaming and hurting is counter-productive. Think about an abusive boss you had and how eager you were to do your best with that behavior. That's how your kids feel too. This approach leads to better feelings for everyone.

Wolf has another book out called _Secrets of Parenting_ which is mostly taken from this book. Buy one or the other as there is a tremendous amount of overlap. Both are appropriate in handling children between 2 and 12; he has another book on dealing with teenagers.

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life.......2000-09-19

This book tought me how to parent better than any other book I have ever read. People always comment to me on how well behaved my kids are and its all due to Anthony Wolfe. Wolfe tells you in simple (and amusing) ways how to parent without punishment, bribes, or driving YOURSELF crazy! Now, if parenting without punishment sounds like being "soft", its not. I am a much tougher parent than most of the people I know. Wolfe has helped me learn to use my own "power" as a parent to get well behaved kids without threats or punishment. Everyone with kids under the age of 12 should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars this book reassures parents that they are doing a good job!.......1999-06-22

Wow! This is the first book I ever read that explained that when your child says "Mommy, I hate you," it's actually a good sign. I found it very comforting at a time when my kids were crazed as a result of being pawns in a nasty divorce. (Things are better now.) - Carrie in Boston

4 out of 5 stars You need to be a parent to appreciate this.......1997-10-06

My book club read this book while my daughter was an infant. I thought it was sort of psycho-babbly. Then my daughter neared her second birthday, and I searched out this book again. All of a sudden it made perfect sense!

I won't say this is the only parenting book you will ever need, but it certainly makes some very valid points, and provides you with actual techniques to apply to your daily ruckus. I recommend it to friends, and now to you too!

                        Book Description

As John McEwan, a young Gunner in the 155th (Lanarkshire Yeomanry) Royal Artillery Regiment sailed down the Clyde in early 1941, he and his colleagues could never have imagined the horrors that lay ahead.

When John and his Regiment landed in Malaya, they were all hugely confident. This evaporated in utter disbelief as the British were totally out-manoeuvered by the Japanese advance culminating in the capture of Singapore. However there was hard fighting, more than generally credited, and John McEwan found himself in the thick of it.

In the event, the author was one of the few to survive the horrors of prolonged captivity and mistreatment. This is his extraordinary story, told with humility and pride, which he dedicates both to those who slaved, suffered and died in brutal conditions of the Kinkasaki copper mine.
