Book Description
This book is a story of the life and work of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, a celebrated scientist and inventor, the father of modern rocketry. He devoted most of his energies to the solution of three scientific and engineering problems: the all-metal dirigible, the aeroplane and the rocket. The most vital and progressive of his discoveries are those dealing with the theory of rocket propulsion. His designs of reaction devices, his methods of studying the dynamics of rocket flight and research into the possibilities of interplanetary travel have become widely known and have won world recognition.
Tsiollkovsky's first original calculations of rocket flight were made at the end of the 19th century and published in 1903. His conclusions were based on elaborate calculation and are strictly scientific. I could never proceed without calculation. It was calculation that directed by thought and my imagination, Tsiolkovsky wrote in one of his articles.
We are witness of Tsiolkovsky's scientific ideas an dreams being embodied in long-range rockets, guided missiles and jet aircraft, to which every passing day brings new improvements, while scientific and technical magazines in many countries are seriously discussing the computations for, and design of, rockets, which are to be satellites of the Earth.
On the threshold of the 20th century Konstantin Tsiolovsky and Ivan Meshchersky laid the foundation of the new sciences - rocket dynamics and the mechanics of bodies with variable mass. In his chief works published in 1897 and 1904 Meshchersky gave the main equations for the dynamics of a point of variable mass. Tsiolkovsky elaborated the dynamics of the rectilinear motion of the long-range rocket with reaction motor operation on liquid fuel.
Tsiolkovsky's works on rocket dynamics and the theory of interplanetary flight were the first in world scientific literature. They preserve their scientific and practical significance to this day.

Tsiolkovsky - The Father of Soviet Rocketry........2005-01-14
This planet is the cradle of human mind, but one cannot spend all one's life in a cradle.
- Konstantin Tsiolkovsky.
_Konstantin Tsiolkovsky: His Life and Work_ by A. Kosmodemyanksky is the biography of Russian rocket pioneer Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. Tsiolkovsky's work included research into the mechanics of the all metal dirigible, designs for an aeroplane and wind tunnel, as well as the theory of rocketry. Tsiolkovsky also wrote on interplanetary travel as well as writing some science fiction and philosophical works. From an early age Tsiolkovsky showed an interest in mathematics, physics, and natural science; however, he was hampered by various difficulties including near deafness which overcame him after a bout of scarlet fever. Tsiolkovsky began his researches in the theory of the all metal dirigible. However, his work was not recognized or funded sufficiently in tsarist Russia. Later, when the Soviets came to power Tsiolkovsky became recognized for his work in rocketry. Tsiolkovsky believed that man would conquer space and his writing proved prophetic in that he suggested rockets would be used to achieve interplanetary travel. Tsiolkovsky offered several distinct designs for rockets and studied the chemistry necessary to understand their fuel requirements. He also derived an equation which showed the velocity necessary to escape the earth's gravitational field. He was regarded by many as a dreamer and utopian for his ideas on interplanetary travel and the future of the human race. His work continues to be important today and his theories have proven prescient to our modern continuing discovery of space. This book provides an excellent introduction to his scientific and mechanical thought as it pertains to rocketry.
Father of the Soviet space program.......2001-05-06
A pioneering Russian aeronautical theorist and writer, he is the father of the Soviet space program. He built the first wind tunnel and solved fundamental problems about space travel, such as use of liquid rocket fuel, long before such activity was feasible. Although he was unappreciated in his lifetime, Sputnik's launch was made to coincide with his centennial.
Tsiolkovsky was a bold innovator and inventor.......2001-04-03
Konstantin Tsiolkovsky died on September 19, 1935 at the age of 78. His works and his ideas have become the scientific basis of the modern theory of jet propulsion. He foresaw the significance of jet propulsion and the conquest of the stratosphere, of flights at supersonic speeds.
A museum has been opened in Kaluga in the house where Tsiolkovsky died. The exhibits are mechanical devices and models which he made with his own hands. The scientist's manuscripts and copies of his published works are exhibited in glass showcases.
Konstantin Tsiolkovsky's tombstone bears the following prophetic words inscribed under the bas-relief of a rocket: "Mankind will not remain on the earth forever, but, in search of light and space, will at first timidly penetrate beyond the limits of the atmosphere and then finally conquer the spaces of the solar system."

disorganized book.......2007-06-20
First I must admit that I hate every book that doesn't have at least one image every two recipes. This book has about 10 images for the entire book.
I think the recipes are what some could qualify as simple, but really the good term would be obvious, you could figure it out yourself. Imagine what you would put in a spinach lasagna... Did you guess? lasagna pasta, tomato sauce of some sort, cheese and spinach. A little bit more taste? add onion and garlic and a little bit of dried oregano. Come on! Can't you make it up yourself? The recipes in that book have nothing new at all. Boring.
An other thing that infuriates me when I use a cooking book is when it uses prepared food. When a book tells me that I could cook spaghetti and use canned spaghetti sauce, but spice it up with dried italian herbs, I would slap its author with a cooking mitt... And you call that a recipe? I call that a college student meal.
Month of Meals: Vegetarian Pleasures.......2007-04-13
Great book for diabetics who are vegans or who want a few vegetarian meals a week.
Veggie Ideas.......2007-01-23
I have always enjoyed vegetarian meals but find that sometimes they take too much time and a lot of trouble to prepare until I found the Month of Meals; Vegetarian Pleasures. The recipes are easy to prepare and they are very tasty. I am very pleased with this book and would recommend it for anyone with diabetes or not to become a healthier individual through vegetables.
Helpful if you're not already a vegetarian.......2005-11-30
I found this book to be helpful in understanding the basic proportions of a healthful vegetarian diabetic diet, but have some reservations about it overall.
First of all, this book, which is sub-titled "Vegetarian Pleasures" might lead a practicing vegetarian to believe that it is focused on vegetarians, but ...throughout the book, vegetable protein sources are referred to as "meat substitutes". To a practicing vegetarian, there is no such thing as a meat substitute because there is no meat on your plate. The editors should take note of this for the next edition or be more up front about the fact that this book is really for non-vegetarians trying to add meatless meals to their diabetic routine. Which I completely support, by the way!
I also found some of the meals a little awkward, like this one: 1 soy dog, 1/2 c EACH carrot and celery sticks, 1/2 brussels sprouts AND 1 c bean salad, made with legumes. I really didn't know what to make of this either from an aesthetic or nutritional viewpoint. And I found the use of a certain brandname dried soup mix throughout to be annoying when it's so easy to make up and freeze nutritious home-made soups.
All that being said, though, I would still recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a selection of usually tasty, nutritious vegetarian diabetic meals, in a easy to read format. I liked the mix and match concept, the meals provide good templates for designing your own favorites, and the nutritional information in the back is very helpful. The menus tend to be the :30 quick-fix at home sort, but some of them are really good and they appeal to a contemporary palate in their mix of ethnic and old standard recipies. The use of soy product is minimal and most folks trying to just add some vegetarian variety to their diets will find many appealing options. The value to the practicing vegetarian is in the way menus are modelled on proper amounts of fats, carbs and proteins, so that you can train yourself to make appropriate and well-balanced meals of the correct portion size. So, despite flaws, I do recommend this helpful and useful book.
I like the cut-a-ways.......2003-03-21
I like the cut-a-ways so we can plan the whole day on one page. That has been the bigest help for me.
Book Description
Diet plays a central (even the central) role in how every person with diabetes manages his or her condition each day. While much is known about diabetes, exactly what everyone who has the condition should be eating continues to generate enormous debate among medical and nutrition professionals. Now, in Eating for Diabetes, nutritional therapist Jane Frank provides a complete overview of the best diet for people with diabetes. Based on the very latest diabetes nutrition research, Frank provides nutritional guidelines (including detailed information on the glycemic index and glycemic load), a menu planner, shopping advice, and over 125 delicious, nutritious recipes that cover every meal of the day: breakfast, snacks and drinks, soups and starters, beans and grains, poultry and fish, vegetables and salads, and desserts. Frank puts particular emphasis on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and provides with each recipe a complete nutritional analysis, including its GI and GL levels. This all-in-one up-to-date cookbook and healthful eating guide is an important, vital new addition to the diabetes cookbook shelf.
Customer Reviews:
Loved this book!.......2006-07-24
I read this book cover to cover and recommended it to friends. I cooked some recipes and served them to my pickiest non diabetic friends. They raved about everything but the dessert. They wanted sugar for dessert! I liked that recipes are marked for glycemic index and load. They are easy to make for the uninspired cook. Watch out because occasionally an item will show up in a recipe that wasn't in the ingredients list.
New Top Shelf Book.......2005-06-09
I found the book to be very informative and was impressed with the recipes Jane presented. She show a through knowledge of the subject and continues to show her cooking skills.

Our Kitty Saint has left us..........2005-08-27
Today's New York Daily News reported on the passing of Ginny, a/k/a the Mother Theresa of Cats, gone at the age of 17. She succumbed to old age yesterday afternoon on a blanket in Philip Gonzalez's care. As for Ginny's story, this is one of my favorite books. The stories are truly heartwarming and this book was a "gotta have it" purchase. Browsing the pet section in a local bookstore, I found this and it jogged my memory: Ginny's story was familiar to me due to a Reader's Digest article, but what happened next? This book captures all the tails...er, TALES, lol. I will definitely re-read this now. How could a dog love cats she doesn't live with? As a cat person, I've always been intrigued by this. How ironic that such incredible humanity could have come from one of god's furry creatures. Rest in peace, Ginny. Let us hope there are more of you in the world.
Absolutely wonderful.......2004-05-06
I read this book in one afternoon and handed it off to my husband, who could not put it down. I relate to the author in one respect: after having animals all my life, I connected with one cat so profoundly that I have devoted my life and work to alleviating animal suffering and overcoming the devastating problem of pet overpopulation. It's bittersweet. I love animals with a depth that is so satisfying, and enjoy human and animal company more than I ever was able. But I am now so attuned to animal suffering (generally due to human neglect or abuse -- I'm not trying to fight the forces of nature) that it is difficult to focus on anything else. Just read this book. It feels so good!
Who Would NOT Like This Book?.......2002-11-18
A continuation of a very sweet story. I have a few stray cats around my home and even though my inside cats aren't as willing to share as Ginny (LOL), I make sure to feed them and give them shelter. I highly recommend this book and also the one that came before it! (Not sure of the exact title).
BUY THIS BOOK!.......2001-01-06
Just as I feel about their first book, do yourself a favor and treat yourself to this one too! Let's hope these true stories inspire others so be so kind. Enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
People teens admire talk about God.......2007-04-13
Author Amy Hammond Hagberg wanted to help teens--her own and others--answer questions about God, including the big question: "How do you know he's real?"
Hagberg wrote to sports stars, recording artists and other celebrities, asking them to reflect on their life experiences and share how the reality of God was making a difference to them personally and professionally. The responses she received--from NBA players, Christian musicians, 'American Idol' contestants and others--are honest, revealing, and often compelling.
The resulting book is a collection of celebrity essays: mini-bios that focus on the reality of God in the midst of media attention, success and failure, and broken relationships. Contributors include Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic basketball team, quarterback David Carr of the Houston Texans, and popular Christian recording artist Clay Crosse.
Some of the interviews are especially helpful for Hagberg's original target readers: teens. Among these, Chrissy Conway of 'Zoe Girl' talks about her parents' divorce, the party scene, and the twists and turns along her personal career path in ways that connect with teens and with anyone who has ever considered attempting a career in music.
Hagberg is a gifted and skilled writer who keeps readers turning the pages as she unpacks celebrity affirmations of the presence of God in their lives. A great gift book for readers from teens through Gen X, but the stories here will interest readers of any age!
Note: Reviewer Dr. David Frisbie is an author and Executive Director of The Center for Marriage & Family Studies in Del Mar, California.
Armchair Interviews says: Anything that can help teens understand their role in living a good life is good.
Celebrities share their faith.......2007-03-11
This is an ideal book to give to people who have questions about becoming a Christian, and who love sports and music celebrities.
44 extreme sports and music celebrities tell their stories in this book, from Jonny Lang (recording artist), to Barlow Girl (rock group), Kimiko Soldati (Olympic diving), CJ Hobgood (surfer), Dwight Howard (NBA player, Orlando Magic), Mick Hannah (downhill mountain bike racer), Jimmie McGuire (professional motocross rider) and more.
They share hard times they faced, how they became Christians and how their paths are more joyful due to their faith. Being a Green Bay Packer fan I turned to Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila's story of growing up in South Central Los Angeles with a tough background, a Muslim dad and a Christian mom, and how his becoming a Christian led to his current happy family life and NFL career. Christian Hosoi, professional skateboarder, after serious drug problems, is now leading a skateboarding ministry.
The two page "God's Road Map" at the end of each celebrity's story contains perceptive questions and Scriptures. Sports and music lovers will enjoy this book, and it can even be a "past watchful dragons book" that will steer doubting people on a new clear path.
god unplugged.......2007-02-02
God Unplugged by Ammy Hagberg was very interesting. It is 403 pages long and was published in 2006 by Destiny Image. In the story top athletes, musicians, and also stars tell how god helped them get where they wanted to be and changed their lives.
In the story there were 44 celebrity reflections on true life experiences with god. Many of these celebrities have been extremely low in their lives and god has pulled them out of them. Also in some cases they have had no luck in there lives and finally achieved their goals after they gave there lives god. All of these people believe that god has either given them opportunities or even the strength to work through where they were to get to where they want to be.
I thought that this was a good book. I enjoyed reading it and seeing how god has changed all of these people's lives. The strengths of this book are that it has top named celebrities that people actually want to read about. The weakness of this book is that there is nothing to find out nest so you don't have a reason to keep reading. I did like how god actually gave them the strength to continue and succeed in life. The writing was very boring to me, but I liked the idea.
The book gave a lasting effect on me because I have a saint Christopher necklace that my grandma gave to me before she passed away and that keeps me safe when I race motorcross. So, I think that god has a great power on us. I would recommend this book, it will make you think.
After reading this, you certainly KNOW he is real!.......2007-01-25
Truly, this, and the book before this, are really awesome books!
** Why?
Because they give some very good insights into other peoples way to God. Not only that, if you don't know the Bible inside and out (and even if you do, actually!), there are quotations from the Bible explaining the why and hows, depending on the story of the person interviewed.
All this, with Amy Hagbergs very nice way of writing (down to earth serious mixed with a nice blend of humor) makes this book a pleasure to read!
Personally, I strongly recommend this book to everyone. It might be those who Seek, or those who have found, it doesn't matter, in my opinion! :)
Fantastic book!.......2007-01-24
What a great book! Amy Hagberg has gathered some of today's biggest sports and music celebs to talk about how they know God is real. This book is in stark contrast to so many of today's depressing, tragedy-focused headlines. And the list of celebrities is impressive! [...]

Customer Reviews:
not bad.......2007-06-25
It's a good book in truth I got it just for the Elizabethan bag on the cover and it is great for beginners I just wish we were told more about what style of embroidery we were using for all the entries and personally (for the elizabethan bag) which stiches were used and what inspired the bag) but I'm biased as I am making something for a recreation group, and like to document what I am working on
Outrageously Gorgeous.......2006-10-26
The designs in this book are simply beautiful. I found the instructions easy to follow and I'm not an expert embroiderer. I want to make every single bag. Great for Christmas presents.
Exceeded my expectations.......2005-07-02
This book features some unique and beatiful designs, such as a pattern for an evening bag called "Bird of Paradise" and a rather nifty handbag called "All Roses". There's patterns for everything from totes, drawstring bags, handbags, evening bags, and a couple of whimsical designs for a little girl's first purse.
The diagrams for construction of each of the bags as well as embroidery are clear and easy to use. Each project description includes measurements of the finished product and a detailed list of supplies (measurements are given in standard and metric). Different types of embroidery are introduced, such as shadow work, stumpwork, and casalguidi stitching.
If you've got a bit of artistic talent you can adapt many of the ideas presented to your own designs - diagrams are produced for tassel making using floss or beads, and an inventive decorative stitch is used to make a lace-like sideseam for one of the drawstring bags.
This book was well worth the money - a definite must-have for embroiderers and textile artists.
Outstanding beginners book.......2005-01-24
If you're looking for a book to teach you how to make bags, this book is a great choice -- even if you don't do embroidery. The book describes how to make 16 classic styles with clear, complete instructions and full-size patterns.
The techniques are solid and enable you to produce high quality bags that stand up well. If you like soft, romantic designs, you'll fall in love with every project in the book. And they provide great basic forms for more artistic interpretations using different materials and embellishment.

Use as a reference, learn elsewhere.......2001-11-03
This was the first book I read on the subject, and it left me with a lot of questions. I recommend only using this book as a cross reference to the plants that work best as companion plants. For learning about the whole idea and how to implement it I recommend "Great Garden Companions" by Sally Jean Cunningham.

Book Description
D. H. (Herb) Wills fought the Japanese on Bataan, was captured and imprisoned, first for a year at the infamous Cabanatuan camp, then for another year 700 miles south at Davao prison, on Mindanao. Embarking for dreaded imprisonment in Japan in 1944, he dove overboard and swam four miles back to Mindanao where he joined the ragtag guerrillas, electing to stay and fight until the island's liberation rather than leave by submarine. Successful campaigns by the Filipino guerrillas, led by Lt. Wills, at Misamis, Malaband, and Dipolog were instrumental in the liberation of Mindanao.
