Book Description
In this authoritative biography, James Hofmann examines the extraordinary life of André-Marie Ampère, who made original, significant contributions to mathematics and chemistry and is renowned for his new branch of physics - electrodynamics. A member of the Académie des Sciences, and professor at the École Polytechnique, his accomplishments are remarkable in view of his tragic personal life. One of the elite of early nineteenth-century Parisian science, yet having no formal education, he embraced the scientific optimism of the Enlightenment, and the Catholic faith. This combination of intellectual expectation and emotional spirituality made Ampère’s genius both destructive and extraordinarily creative. This, the only biography available in the English language, illuminates the scientific contributions of an individual and his epoch, and provides a fascinating insight into the workings of the scientific mind.

my review.......2006-08-27
I found a lot of info in the book. It was one of the first I read on the topic of IBS. I would reccomend it as a starting point, on your journey of info collection. It is hard to say it is a great reference because every case of IBS is so individualized.
A well researched encyclopedia about Irritable Bowel Syndrome.......2006-02-19
IBS For Dummies is likely the most complete and current book about IBS that has been written to date for the non-medical reader. It covers pretty well every topic and aspect about the illness and it does it very well. The book reads easily from cover-to-cover or as a reference from chapter to chapter. This book is for sufferers or for anyone who wants to learn more about this chronic illness. Certainly well worth the read and as an addition to your personal IBS book library.

Book Description
Cooks and gourmets everywhere know how delicious Asian food can be. Asian cuisine is so different, yet so appealing, to the western palate, that we make it a cornerstone of our tasting experience.
While we know that shrimps bok choi and sprouts are among the distinctive elements of Asian cooking, the sauces that make dishes special are a mystery to many Western chefs. They are widely available in Asian shops, supermarket specialty food sections, and by mail order. But the bottles are often labeled in Chinese or Vietnamese characters. Even labels in English don't actually describe the tastes or uses of the special sauces that we would like to use - but may be reluctant to buy.
Asian Sauces and Marinades unlocks this mystery of the orient. It is the key to the pungent, aromatic and richly spiced sauces that are easy to obtain and use to make the rich and complex flavors that are authentic and satisfying. It contains:
An 8-page glossary of terms, from Annato to Hoi Sin to Sambal Oeleek
Marinades for fish, meat, poultry and tofu
Stir-fry sauces and techniques
Dressings and pickling sauces for vegetables and fruits
Dipping sauces and relishes
Rubs and glazes for meat and seafood
Stews and braised dishes
Curries, mild to fiery
Soups, broths and stocks
Sauces as accompaniments
Dessert sauces.
Each section is filled with familiar and unusual recipes (80 in total) that are uniquely associated with the sauces and marinades described. There is a history of the dish and the national cuisine and dozens of very tempting full-color photographs of the dishes described.
There is a great need for the information in this book, and Wendy Sweetser presents it in a form and style that is inviting and accessible to Western cook, from novice to experienced.
"All great chefs agree that the secret to delicious dishes is the sauce. This volume does a superb job of showing you how fundamental they are in Asian cooking and explains their many uses. Having this book in your collection is like having a magic wand in your kitchen."
- Chef Martin Yan,
- host of Yan Can Cook

Book Description
Since all women experience menopause differently, shouldn't there be more than one treatment? For decades, it was estrogen that was supposedly the ultimate cure-all for "the change." Recently, progesterone has been touted as the most effective menopause treatment.
Dr. Joseph Collins reveals there is no magic hormone or combination of hormones that can be indiscriminately prescribed to all women. In fact, he has identified 12 different types of menopause, each requiring a treatment that is as unique as the women experiencing it.
In
What's Your Menopause Type? you'll discover Dr. Collin's revolutionary program designed to help you take charge of this life stage. Using a revealing questionnaire, he shows you how to determine your own menopause type and then prescribes the best nutritional, herbal, glandular, or hormonal treatment for your unique symptoms. He also provides everything you need to know to better understand this stage of life such as:
• Which natural and conventional treatments are best for you—and which to avoid
• How to weigh the risks and benefits of hormone-replacement therapy
• A complete description of hormones and their effects on your body
• Advice on how to order hormone tests
• Suggestions for choosing a "hormone educated" doctor
• And much, much more!
With the help of Dr. Collins and this empowering book, you can take charge of menopause and get on with your life!
"At last, a well-referenced resource for pharmacists, other health-care professionals, and women on the advantages of natural vs. synthetic hormone-replacement therapy. An invaluable resource for those interested in customized natural hormone-replacement therapy. This book is the ammunition that many need to prove the value of natural hormone replacement." —
Dana Reed-Kane, Pharm.D., F.A.C.A, F.I.A.C.P.
"Provides much-needed information that will allow millions of women to work with their doctors to effectively solve the problems associated with menopause." —
Richard C. Heitsch, M.D.
"A valuable tool for anyone researching menopause." —
James E. Paoletti, R.Ph.
"Finally, a book that teaches the importance of balance and actually shows everyone what many women have suspected all along: There is more than one type of menopause." —
Luana Stone, menopause patient
Customer Reviews:
Brave new perspective..........2000-10-15
I have read the books - all the good ones I thought; I've researched the treatments; I've talked (& talked...) to several physicians, to other women - nothing has even come close to this book. This makes sense! We are all so unique - biologically, psychologically, chemically; why would our passage through menopause not be unique as well? Of course it is!
Well written, logical & filled with simple yet revolutionary new alternatives to use immediately for the irritation, anxiety, memory-lapses, hot flashes, night sweats, you-name-it... that you're experiencing, the book gives you some control over what you're experiencing.
I knew I was doing something wrong (though I was trying almost everything!), but didn't know what. Now the pieces fit!
Beg, borrow or steal if you have to, but get a copy for your home library; you'll refer to it again & again.
Woman,40+years old? Run, don't walk, to buy this book!.......2000-03-18
Finally, sense to the confusing passage of menopause. Why do some women hardly notice the change at all? Why does one do well on estrogen while another, natural progesterone only? Why do some women's discomforts resolve while others continue to baffle? Not only does Dr. Collins make all of this simple to understand, but he offers straight forward protocol for analyzing, understanding and prescribing for the whole range of individual differences of menopause. What a relief, to see light through the tunnel. The book is in my back pocket. The appointment is made. My Naturopath and I now have the tools to mend my menopausal way.
A practicing doctors prespective.......2000-03-07
I am a practicing Naturopathic Physician. Dr Collins, has provided me with a great tool to further my understanding of the complexity of menopause. I have had cases that have not responded to what was a resonable treatment plan. After reading "What's your menopause type" I now have a new insight into those patients and their needs. To have the "types" defined and put into categories lends to a greater understanding for the practitioner. The "menopause Type Questionnaire", combined with the labatory hormone levels is very useful information that should help everyone who is working with this transitional time in a womans life. The information on the nutrition and supplements is excellent. I applaud Dr Collins for his commitment and dedication to an area of medicine that is in great need of more information and understanding. If you are practitioner who deals with menopausal patients, I strongly suggest you read and understand what Dr collins has to say. If you are not a practitioner but would like a better understanding of menopause, this is a good read.
What's Your Menopause Type?.......2000-02-24
While reading "What's Your Menopause Type?", one can feel the heart felt compassion of the author. His writing is down to earth, easy to understand, and the resource information is invaluable. This book enables you to take control of your own life. Dr. Collins has finally put to rest the old myth that menopause is the same for all women. I would suggest that every man read this book, especially to help them understand their loved ones. As well as having valuable information on nutrition, herbs and hormones, he gives the reader access to a web site that will enable them to find physicians and pharmacists that are commented to treating each menopausal woman. I know I will keep this book in my library as a valuable resource, and I would like to personally thank Dr. Collins for his sensitivity with respect to woman and menopause.
THANK YOU.......2000-02-23
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Finally a book that gets rid of the hit-or-miss, one-size-fits-all, try-anything-that-might-work-to-get-relief approach to treating peri-menopause and menopause. Progesterone cream just wasn't doing anything for me......and rightly so....from taking the test in the book, I learned that progesterone is NOT what I need. I also didn't recognise some of my symptoms as being menopausal until I read about my specific type. Now I have a better understanding of why I have been so miserable these last 2 1/2 years and I have the tools to get better! I bought the book two days ago, started an herbal formula program today, and I already feel better. Every woman over 40 needs this book!

Book Description
Adding an important new dimension to the history of U.S.-Japan relations, this book reveals that an unofficial movement to promote good feeling between the United States and Japan in the 1920s and 1930s only narrowly failed to achieve its goal: to modify the so-called anti-Japanese exclusion clause of the 1924 U.S. immigration law.
It is well known that this clause caused great indignation among the Japanese, and scholars have long regarded it as a major contributing factor in the final collapse of U.S.-Japan relations in 1941. Not generally known, however, is that beginning immediately after the enactment of the law, private individuals sought to modify the exclusion clause in an effort to stabilize relations between the two countries. The issue was considered by American and Japanese delegates at almost all subsequent U.S.-Japan diplomatic negotiations, including the 1930 London naval talks and the last-minute attempts to prevent war in 1941.
However, neither the U.S. State Department nor the Japanese Foreign Office was able to take concrete measures to resolve the issue. The State Department wanted to avoid appearing to meddle with Congressional prerogatives, and the Foreign Office did not want to be seen as intruding in American domestic affairs. This official reluctance to take action opened the way for major efforts in the private sector to modify the exclusion clause.
The book reveals how a number of citizens in the United States—mainly clergy and business people—persevered in their efforts despite the obstacles presented by anti-Japanese feeling and the economic dislocations of the Depression. One of the notable disclosures in the book is that this determined private push for improved relations continued even after the 1931 Manchurian Incident.
