Book Description

War North of 80 is the personal story of Wilhelm Dege, the leader of the last active German weather station of World War II, code named "Operation Haudegen." In an effort to secure weather data vital for military operations in northwestern Europe during World War II, the German Navy and Air Force secretly established manned weather stations in East Greenland, Svalbard, and Franz Josef Land.

Translated from the German by William Barr, War North of 80 describes the mission and its participants from its beginning until they were picked up by Allied troops on May 9, 1945, the last German troops to surrender. Dege's lively writing describes not just the official weather observation program but also the recreational activities, the ambitious series of hikes around Nordaustlandet, and the hopes and fears of the group as they followed the increasingly dire war situation in Europe. With a detailed introduction, Barr's translation offers English-speaking readers a rare glimpse into the Germans' activities in the Arctic during the Second World War. An epilogue by Ekart Dege, Wilhelm's son, offers insight into the various fates of the expedition members who worked alongside his father.

5 out of 5 stars Insight into a little-known aspect of World War II.......2004-12-13

War North Of 80: The Last German Arctic Weather Station Of World War II is the firsthand account of Wilhelm Dege, leader of the last of the weather stations set up in the farthest reaches of the Arctic during World War II. It was not until well after the death of Hitler and the end of his regime that the Allies sent a ship northward to retrieve Dege and his crew, making their team the last German troops to surrender. War North Of 80 presents a skillfully rendered English translation of Dege's journal, enhanced with appendices on the post-war careers of the men who faced the harsh rigors of the Arctic alongside Dege. A profoundly fascinating insight into a little-known aspect of World War II military history.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended by my therapist.......2007-10-03

This book was recommended to me by my therapist. It is a great help to me, teaching me that it's okay to set boundaries especially when I'm in an uncomfortable situation. I would recommend it to anyone.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but mistitled.......2003-09-16

This book has many good points in it, but it really doesn't seem to be about boundaries. This book seems to say "If you love yourself, then your boundaries will automatically form" and then focuses on how to value yourself. I have no doubt that learning to like and respect oneself will help one to form better boundaries. Alas, I bought this book hoping to learn more about boundaries so I could use them as a new tool to help make "space" to like myself better! Oops!

At many points, I also felt that the book did a little more "telling" than "showing", which made it seem a little shallow to me. As another reviewer said, this does offer a good summary of many tips and techniques for how to learn to like and respect oneself, and so it is probably an excellent book to use to get an overview of that topic so you could figure out what to go read in more detail.

5 out of 5 stars The Clichéd Title takes away from the value inside........2002-08-24

The whole concept and idea of boundaries tends to be overused and clichéd these days. Because of this, we may have lost sight of a fundamental development area for us to become fully human.

This book was a wonderful gift from a friend. In my work, I am always referring to the need for clear boundaries in personal and professional situations. I tend to think that I have pretty good boundaries and in general I do. This book helped lay out specific criteria and circumstances for me to reconsider.

It would be too easy to describe or label this particular book as another of the Self Help ilk. It is not a workbook and I wouldn't describe it as one full of exercises. However, it does have some areas with specific strategies, recommendations and processes to help you identify the important ingredients required in order for an individual to clarify and maintain the proper boundaries in all aspects of their lives.

It is not technical in the sense of theoretical but it is thorough. Anyone who wants to look into this important area can apply this material directly and immediately in his or her own life. It is also full of concrete examples in real live situations.

If you feel that you have issues around setting and clarifying boundaries, this book will be of tremendous assistance. If boundaries are not a concern for you, I would encourage you to consider reviewing the material. It goes beyond the surface to the core purpose and intent of your life. For this reason, it is a great book for counselors, coaches and all self-seekers.

2 out of 5 stars expected more details on boundaries.......2001-07-19

I'm glad some people found this book helpful. I didn't myself. I would describe it as an encyclopedia of all the self-help concepts ever published, and most do not apply directly to interpersonal boundaries. "Treasure Yourself" should have been the full title of this book, their point being that if you would just like yourself more darn it, indirectly you'll form better boundaries. I suppose that's possible, but I would need 40 lifetimes to implement all the concepts reviewed in this chronicle of self-help. I still flip through the book for fun sometimes, amazed at the huge quantity of information they summarize that does not specifically address interpersonal boundaries.

Here are my suggestions. I found "Privacy and Its Invasion" by Deckle McLean to be pure gold. The author describes the types of boundaries we need, giving historical perspectives and practical reasoning on how interpersonal boundaries lead to a sense of wholeness and personal identity. It's a scholarly book, not self-help, but an easy read, short, well-referenced. I tracked it down at a local university library (he he). The other book I liked was "How to Say No Without Feeling Guilty" by Patti Breitman and Connie Hatch. It's loaded with practical advice for many, many situations. The authors of these two books stand and deliver, without talking down to you.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent book on boundaries.......2001-05-23

This book is clear and very well written. I felt all the way through that the authors had great personal experience with the subject as well as professional knowledge.
I wrote this review a year ago and am still using the book regularly now. I have found that it stretches with me and is a kind of companion in my personal growth. This is far more than I ever expected from a book.

Than the "Big Bruiser," coffee-table version....and much more functional wine education tool because, in my view, while slightly less info-packed, the smaller, more handy format makes it more likely that you'll pick it up more frequently to "graze" the treasure trove of facts contained therein.

Also: the CWC's alphabetical, encyclopedic layout makes it easy to cross-index & reference.

Truly a "must have" for any serious wine afficianado!

I like this book and give the authors high marks for their thorough explanation at the beginning of supplies and their uses/applications. The projects are very lively and fun. Lots of color and dots. Most use the stencils also designed by the authors but one can duplicate them free hand or pick similar themes at a craftstore. Most of the projects I would do but the last few that had to do with modifying terra cotta plant pots into functional art I could do without. Overall its a good book.

I love, love, love the ideas in this book - all of the projects are very lighthearted and fun. I only wish they had given the measurements of the wood pieces they painted on - there are no specifics for the painted trays, etc. Also, many of the projects need additional purchases such as stencils, which are pretty expensive on the website info they furnish. But, the projects are cheerful and bright - and really cute. They give very detailed directions for painting on metal, wood, clay pots, etc. You'll be motivated..........

I found this very thick book to be a bargain for its price, however, I must admit I was dissapointed by its content. The author clearly has a special fondness for Italian gardens, and these tend to dominate not only the pictorial aspect, but also the text. It presents itself as a historical, pedagogical essay on Europan garden design, yet I found its discourse biased and not always correct. For example, it claims that Spain never developed a gardening style of its own, yet the Mudejar style (an exquisite mix of Moorish and Gothic styles) has produced the gardens of the Alcazar palace in Seville. This marvel is virtually ignored, dismissed with a bad photo and almost no mention. Similarly, English and Irish gardens, with their lovely touch of romanticism and passion for color, where wild flowers and climbing roses dominate, are given short shrift. Only those examples ressembling or imitating Roman or Italian Renaissance designs (where one finds an over-abundance of sculptures of mythological themes) are given much coverage.

Overall, for a book with pretensions of scholarship and historical depth in European garden design, this is a dissapointment. I don't know if this a result of ignorance from the part of the author, or due to some personal prejudice. A shame for such a wonderful topic.

Based on a longitudinal study of children starting in the 1930's, this book describes behavior of children at certain ages. It does not tell you how to raise your child. It simply tells you what to expect at 3 months, two years, eight years, etc. Instead of perceiving your child's behavior as peculiar or bad (and therefore punishing the child), the parent can see the behavior as normative. It enables acceptance of your child as he or she is and should be.

                          5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2002-10-05

Parents hoping to introduce their children to modern American art could do worse than to buy this edition reproducing two series of paintings by Jacob Lawrence (1917-2000), one of the finest African American artists in U.S. history.

Published in 1991 by the Hampton University Museum in Virginia, this book contains four essays and reproductions of two Lawrence series, all 32 Frederick Douglass paintings made in 1938 and 1939 and all 31 Harriet Tubman paintings made in 1939 and 1940. Lawrence painted both series and wrote the captions to tell the stories of hope and emancipation of African Americans.

The first three essays, each running 10 to 12 pages, relate how Lawrence developed his series format and, specifically, how he developed the ideas and art in each of these two stories. He was influenced by a belief that African Americans, while not still enslaved, were in 1940 still in "an economic slavery." The stories he featured, while historical, remained relevant to his own period as well. The fourth covers the imagery of struggle.

Bold and unforgiving, Lawrence's vibrant works grew from his own childhood migration--from Atlantic City, New Jersey to Easton, Pennsylvania, to Philadelphia and finally, at 13, to Harlem, from his exposure to African-American culture--and his intensive training in the Utopia Children's House and New Deal-sponsored Harlem Art Workshop of the 1930s. In Harlem, he studied old masters like Giotto and Pieter Breughel the Elder and modern masters like Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cezanne and Henri Matisse.

At that time, the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) was still funding public art murals, but Lawrence was too young to gain a commission. Instead, he determined to show the African-American struggle for freedom in real-life stories, tying past to present. From 1938 to 1941, he used the New York public library for research, creating in swift succession five series of paintings telling the stories of Toussaint L'Ouverture, Douglass, Tubman, John Brown, and The Migration of the Negro.

In the middle two series, Lawrence hoped to speak artistically of the legendary escapes from slavery made by two African-American heroes, each of whom led the struggle for ultimate freedom for all. The paintings depicted beatings, coercion, repression and ultimately courageous escapes. The faces and bodies in these works speak of the brutality of slavery and the exhilaration that came from its escape. Lawrence wove bold colors and themes throughout the series, thereby joining each set of paintings into a whole.

He succeeded, too, because these works are as beautiful and wild as anything ever created by van Gogh, and a great deal more hopeful.

Even if you don't want to know all the personal and American history that Lawrence melded in the creation of these works--which I can't imagine--you will relish owning a book containing color plates of two entire series, complete with Lawrence's enthralling captions.

This book is a gem. Alyssa A. Lappen

2 out of 5 stars Gina's Review of this book.......2002-03-01

My review of this book is somewhat good and somewhat bad, thus I have some good news and some bad. I shall now explain to you the good things about this book. Some of thy good things about this book is that if your deciding to do Frederick Douglass or Harriet Tubman this is a good book for a project but the bad things about the book. Is that say for example you are just doing Harriet Tubman or your just doing Frederick Douglass, it would be difficult to just find information about one, because you could think thier talking about about Harriet you could get the wrong information, and research the wrong information. That is why i would not buy this book, for myself or for anyone that I now. PS: I lllooooovvvvveeeeeeee BILLY
