Robert Burns Woodward was the star of 20th-century organic chemistry. An MIT graduate by age 19, Woodward's ingenious notions about organic synthesis and his artful methodology were astounding. He is most famed for his synthesis of vitamin B12,which he undertook with Albert Eschenmoser, and for the orbital symmetry rules he developed with Roald Hoffmann. This volume presents Woodward's most celebrated papers and lectures--including the famous Cope lecture. Insightful commentaries and rarely seen photographs are also included.
Customer Reviews:
Portrait of a legend.......2006-09-06
Nobel Prize winner Robert Burns Woodward (called 'R B' by his colleagues and students) was the greatest organic chemist of the twentieth century, a legend in his own lifetime. By the time he entered high school, he had already digested college chemistry, and his professors at MIT realised they had an exceptional person in their classes. Before he was 25, Woodward became an instructor at Harvard, and before he was 35, became a full professor. Woodward won a Nobel Prize, and would have almost certainly won another one if it were not for his untimely death. Without him, organic chemistry may have been quite different today. Even in the exalted world of Harvard faculty, he stood out as being exceptional.
Woodward was an unparalleled master in the synthesis of complex organic molecules, of the kind that have given rise to many of the necessities of modern life, including plastics and pharmaceuticals. But he looked at them as much more than practically useful entities; he synthesized them the way a Michelangelo would sculpt a David, or the way a Mozart would tie together a symphony. For him organic molecules were great architectures, and he was the greatest architect and artist in the world of molecules, whose achievements probably will never be paralleled. More than anyone else, he elevated their synthesis to the stature of an art.
This book is a testament to his astonishing skills and achievements. It contains facsimilies of all his important papers, transcripts of interviews and speeches, and rare photos of the man not seen elsewhere. These items are enlivened with rare reproductions of his handwritten notes. The interviews feature many of his colleagues and students who worked with him. They talk about his singular habits, his prodigious energy, unbelievable memory, and an attention to detail that would leave fellow chemists with their mouths wide open. For chemists, it will provide a window into the mind of a genius, who achieved feats that those before him had thought impossible. For non-chemists, the non-chemical parts of the book will give an insight into what kind of a man and scientist he was, the Einstein of his field. It should be on the shelves of every chemist who wants to know about the best that his field can produce. I am glad that a book of this quality and size is available at a reasonable price.
historical chemistry.......2001-07-25
this book is jam-packed with primary sources concerning the life and works of r.b. woodward: journal articles, unpublished speeches, photographs of the man, drafts of his papers bearing hand-written corrections. it also includes some commentary from colleagues and family. an excellent resource for anyone interested in the history and process of organic chemical (and scientific, in general) research.

Customer Reviews:
Great workout program.......2007-07-09
I'm a 4.0/4.5 player who has been doing the Power Tennis Training program off and on for the past few years and would strongly recommend it for all players looking to improve strength and conditioning. Chu's book provides a 12 week workout plan (both weight training and court footwork drills) that is easy to follow and gets results. I find myself quicker, stronger, and more explosive after just a week or two. The program gives you more confidence in your level of fitness which translates into more confidence in your overall game. Some of the workout days take a few hours, but if you stick with the program you will be more than pleased with the results. Thanks for a great book Don Chu!
DISAPPOINTING.......2006-08-12
I guess my expectations are too high. This book was very remedial with a lack of content. I was hoping to gain some insight from this book, but the information was basic at the best, with poor choices for athletes. No regard to the biomechanics of resistance training were applied, and no effort to address the neural or physiological continuums that are extremely important to athletic development. The one bright spot is the section on the court drills. They are enough to get you started on agility and foot speed drills.
If you play serious tennis, this is what you want!.......2005-02-16
This book is a set of well crafted exercise patterns. I am really impressed by the way the author has touched upon key development areas, which, one can easily overlook. I am very regular with my gym schedules with a balance of cardio and weight training. Sticking to the book schedule of about 3 month program shouldn't be a motivational challenge. With just one week into it, I have not only seen the results in my court coverage and my game, but also into other "reflex" sensative indoor games like foos ball :)
This is the best investment one can make for playing serious tennis.
Exactly what a serious player needs........1999-04-16
As a high school tennis coach and a tournament player myself, I have looked extensively for a training source that is highly specific to tennis and easy to follow. Don Chu's book fits both of these criteria. Chu tells you exactly what to do and how to do it; reps and sets are clearly listed and the exercises carefully explained. Several other books on the market promise a great deal, but Chu's book, in my experience, is the only one that promises to make you a stronger player and then shows you the steps to achieve this goal, provided you work hard. No other book or program on the market can do this in my opinion.
Product Description
Great book for highschool coaches and players, collegiate coaches and players. Ideal training tool for ligue team captains, parents of kids that would like to be good players. Lots of innovative drills to get better. Easy to read with fantastic diagrams of drills. A must have for any tennis player, who would like to improve.

Delight family and friends with exquisitely decorated cakes for birthdays, dinner parties, or just as a special treat. Through a simple question-and-answer format, with every procedure shown in color photographs, beginners will find out how to decorate without icing (just use a powdered sugar design); how to make chocolate curls and gumpaste flowers; how to prepare the drizzled chocolate icing known as ganache; and how to embellish tiered, bundt, and raspberry-filled cakes. See how to whip up fondant, ice petits fours, and use a pastry bag to write greetings and create adornments. The all-important wedding cake is here, too. And while the focus is on decoration, there are also basic cake and icing recipes, too.
Customer Reviews:
good but needs some proofing.......2006-02-14
For most things, the instructions are clear and easy to follow- great for learning the basics. However, something is wrong with the chocolate cake recipe. It tells you add 1/4 CUP cinnamon (although the picture shows what looks like a 1 tsp) and no where in the directions does it tell you to add sugar. This is the only mistake I've found so far, but I haven't tried everything yet.

Customer Reviews:
Real life in a book.......2006-01-20
This book mirrors real-life situations on so many levels. The reader can readily engage in the lives of the characters while at the same time possibly seeing their own life situations played out. Everyone can find some part of themselves in at least one of the characters, which makes the novel believable. There are so many life lessons to be learned in this book;lessons that can actually be used. The humor, insight, and honesty the author employs in her writing sets The Tides the Bind apart from other novels in its genre. I read an excerpt of her upcoming book, Yonder, on her website, www.ericakennedy.com. I know it too will be a page turner.
Something for Everyone.......2005-11-15
I read the other reviews and have to agree that this book was quite enjoyable. I suggested it to a friend and was happy she enjoyed it as much as I did. It's definitely an original story and the relationship situations the characters go through are relateable. Roland and Elise's relationship is one many women could relate to and learn from about settling for what you got instead of going for what you want and the cost of doing that. There is definitely something in this book for everyone. You won't be dissapointed.
Rollercoaster Ride!.......2005-10-18
I really enjoyed this book! I think that anyone that reads this book whether male or female will be able to relate to at least one character in the story. This book will take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions from happy to sad to hurt to hopeful, etc. If you're looking for a really good book, this is the one!!!!
Great Book!!!.......2005-10-14
Stumbled across this book online and was happy I did. Good drama but was funny too at times and the characters were fresh. Wish I could see it as a movie since it sorta plays out like one. Good job for a first time author!

Customer Reviews:
An interesting read.......2003-06-06
It's a good book, but not quite what I expected when I made the purchase. The author writes about her trip in 1999 through the Ukraine, Belarus Lithuani, Latavia, Estonia, Finland, and then across Russia to Vladivostok. She writes snapshot views into her journey, and while the snapshots are presented in cronological order they don't always connect. For example, in one chapter she's riding a train. The next opens with her getting off a bus. The book doesn't cover the sites she's there to visit, but instead focuses in on the journey itself.
If you're looking for some light reading about traveling, this book fits the bill. Only most people are more interested in what happens at each stop on the trip, and don't need to know the details of catching the train, checking into the hotel, or attempting to deal with getting a visa registered or hotels to stamp the visa. Some of the detail is useful, as the process *is* different and could be mind-bending for someone not prepared for it.
I was also shaking my head as we see the author (who is making the trip after a multi-year business trip to help reform Russia) attempting to use legaleze to force people to give her the same price as a Russian citizen. (It's expected that forigners will pay more for things like hotels, bus tickets, train rides, etc. Forget the clause in the Russian Constitution -- no one abides by it. Which is what the author finally realizes after weeks of arguing.)
Loved It!.......2002-08-24
This was a fascinating, humorous read (from a Western point of view), and I wish it had been a few hundred pages longer! Two highlights: finding an internet connection, and a Russian woman's view of President Clinton. I admire the author's chutzpah; (what a crusader!), armed with a copy of the Russian Consitution, she challenged the unfair and illegal pricing that she met at every stop. Excellent job, Ms. Baier.
An entertaining and informative travel log of Russia.......2001-11-26
Molly Baier traveled 12,000 miles and kept a daily journal of her experiences as she traveled through the Ukraine, Russia and other countries in the former Soviet Union. She has a wonderful way of sharing her experiences as she had to check into hotels, buy tickets on trains and buses, prevent people from overcharging her for being a foreigner, hold on to her passport, etc. trying to overcome poverty and bureaucracy and petty thievery. She also relates meetings with friends who welcomed her into their homes and shared whatever they had with her. For anyone who wants to gain insight into the real conditions inside Russia today, this is a good place to start. It is filled with humor, honesty and careful descriptions and analysis of current conditions.
Back in the U.S.S.R........2001-11-23
Whether read as adventure, current affairs, or practical guide to
"Russia" on Five Million Roubles A Day, Molly J. Baier's account of her trek across the former Soviet Union is informative and fun. In the interest of disclosure (and bragging)I attended the same school; Molly was competitive, curious, and excelled at everything she put her hand to. Thus, I am not surprised at the accomplishments that have culminated in her first book. A successful lawyer, fluent in Russian and German, she worked for two years to reform and bolster the rule of law in Ukraine. As if this were just an appetizer, she set off alone - in the daring manner of Victorian trailblazer, Isabella Bird - to discover and uncover the essence of a rapidly changing landscape. In its analyis, wit, and eye for detail, the book is both evocative and provocative. It is a good Christmas present for anyone desiring to learn about other cultures at a time when such knowledge is necessary rather than frivolous.
From surreal to unreal.......2001-11-15
Try to imagine a travelogue authored by a collaboration of Franz Kafka, George Orwell and Mel Brooks.

This book has everything for your little one!.......2004-08-23
My son loves this book - it's the first book that has really captured his attention. It has a cute story, wonderful illustrations, and a lot of things going on all at once. He can look at a page many times and still find something new. It has neat little windows and a few flaps to look under. It has a young child's favorite things to recognize - a dog, fire trucks, a mouse, picnic foods, hats, the moon, a mailbox, etc. I only wish there were more pages!

Book Description
The telegram says that her father's Thunderbolt aircraft was shot down by the Germans over Holland -- and that Lieutenant George Fowler is presumed dead. But for Molly, that's impossible. She knows she would feel it in her heart if her father were truly dead. After all, he had been shot down once before and survived. She feels certain that he has found a way to survive again. And she secretly clings to that belief as she stands alongside her mother and brother at the memorial service. As her small town of Keenan, Maine, slogs through the deprivations of wartime, Molly waits for a sign from her father -- something to show that he is still alive.
Months pass with no word. And even with the support of friends like Peter, the son of one of the town's wealthiest men, and Jane, whose Japanese heritage makes her the focus of suspicion and ridicule, keeping her faith is even harder for Molly. Then the appearance of a mysterious pocket watch gives Molly hope. Could this be the sign she's been waiting for? Molly risks all to find out.
Customer Reviews:
Catch Molly's spirit..........2002-10-16
I read Janet Lee Carey's novel in one sitting--that's how hooked I was from the first chapter. I truly felt I was IN Maine, walking along the beach, the cliffs, and through Molly's house, school, and life right along with her. Unusual and memorable images are used throughout the book, my favorites being the use of the reconstructed stained glass window and the references to fires, ghosts, sea, and sky--all of which are handled with sensitivity and originality by Ms. Carey. The pace is fast, the characters believable and multi-dimensional, and historical facts are woven in seamlessly throughout the storyline. I highly recommend this book to anyone who like vibrant writing, a slice of history, and a few surprises.
Molly's Fire.......2002-02-08
The freindships that exist between the main characters are of a depth rarely given. I felt a kindredship with Molly and the others too; so much so that I was disappointed to have the book come to an end. Hopefully, the author will write a sequel and let us know what becomes of them from then.
May look weird, but ONE OF THE BEST STRIES I'VE READ!!!!!!!!.......2001-10-27
When I went into my classroom one day, we were reading this book. I became blown away by the fantasticly mysterious storyline and characters that are in it.It is a WONDERFUL book, and I think that every kid from 8-16 should read it. You'd be surprised how nice it is.
Molly's Fire.......2000-06-29
I want to take exception to the so-called critical or editorial review that characters in this book are "straight out of central casting." Believable characters are drawn not only from our own experience but what the reader will also identify. Writing a book about an actual time requires actual persons to inhabit the story. I encourage readers to read this book for themselves and by-pass the critics.
Molly's Love for her Father.......2000-06-02
Any reader who loves stories of the World War II era will appreciate this finely crafted novel. The author has done an excellent job of researching the attitudes of those who were left behind when family members had to off to fight the war. George Fowler, Molly's father is a pilot in Europe, and is declared "missing and presumed dead", an idea that Molly cannot accept. Her deep love for her father won't let her believe that she'll never see him again. This belief and how Molly interacts with her mother, grandmother, brother, and classmates is the main plot of the novel. The descriptions of the town in Maine, the seashore and surrouding woods, are vividly portrayed. One can almost smell the salt air and the aroma of freshly cut fir trees. The characters are well-fleshed out and believable. The reader is caught up in Molly's strong desire to have her father somehow return home. Will he or won't he and how will Molly survive? That question is what keeps the pages turning through the plot twists to the last chapter.

The Emperor's Angry Guest.......2000-07-21
The range of emotion you feel as a reader has its highs and lows to such an extent that one can not put it down until it is finished. The real things in war are not always felt by those who never went to war, but in this book you feel what war is all about, including all of its flaws.
well written quick paced no bull account of the US Military.......1999-07-27
The Emperors Angry Guest was an excellent book and I would recommend it. Mr.Knox narrated his story well. The book was carefully documented. A very good example of the US government's propensity in not paying close attention what is really, truly going on with their own sons lives. These kids were 18-20 years old. The Battan Death March was real and so were the men who were forced at gunpoint to participate in it. A very good historical account...
