5 out of 5 stars A personal touch to an impersonal war.......2005-02-03

The book is both well written and entertaining. The reader will experience every emotion and gain a very keen understanding of one boy's tumble into manhood. Regardless of your views on the Vietnam war you'll love it. This book is not about the war but about a small piece of a young man's life!

5 out of 5 stars When Minutes Seemed Like Hours.......2004-10-08

I thought this book was well written and being a military Veteran, I found many situations in common with the writer. This story is of one young person's life growing and finding himself in warfare. Vietnam, like nmost wars, created men from boys before their time. I believe everyone will enjoy this story.

    Book Description

Even though Americans spend thousands on furniture, appliances and interior decoration, many of our homes have become little more than drop-off zones where we collapse after work, glued to the TV while gulping down a microwave dinner.

The home can be so much more than that, says Victoria Moran. It can be a haven in which people can revitalize mind, body and soul. That's what Shelter for the Spirit is all about. Merging Eastern and Western spiritual traditions with a sensitivity to the demands of modern life, it provides people with usable directions for bringing a sense of peace and renewal to their homes. Whether addressing how to get rid of clutter, decorate in a way that respects your personality, clean house as a spiritual exercise or celebrate special days (and ordinary ones too), Shelter for the Spirit shows how the quality of attention we give to everyday acts can transform our lives. The only book of its kind, it helps all readers make their homes places in which they and their guests enjoy spending their moments.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, Helpful, Calm.......2006-12-15

The writing flows easily, the tone is compassionate, and the advice is both helpful and healing. I love this book and have kept it as a reference for years after first reading it; I go to it often and find more than what I expected every time.

    5 out of 5 stars Sanctuary.......2006-11-04

I'm not really great about writing book reviews but Amazon.com asked for my thoughts.

"Shelter for the Spirit" is one of the most beautiful, meaningful books I've ever read. I was so impressed that I purchased another copy for my aunt who has recently lost her husband and moved to a smaller home. It was my intention to share the beauty of this book with my Aunt so that she can create the next phase of her life and home.

Many of Victoria's idea are simple, common sense and yet they are written so beautifully that you find yourself sheltered within the book. Ms. Moran is one of my favorite authors. All of her creations are lovely little treats and are reserved in a special part of my bookcase for when I want to visit "an old friend." Don't hesitate to read her books or to give them all as gifts. They are simply beautiful and beautifully simple.

    Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Letting go of Martha Stewart and embracing the home you have.......2006-02-25

I have purchased this book three times and gave copies to good friends. I have one for myself. Home is important and it doesn't depend on having fashionable and dust-free furniture. Whether one is creating a home for one-self, a child, a pet, a family, or any combination, it's the spirit that makes the home. If all you have is peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, invite your friends and make it a celebration.

5 out of 5 stars A book to go back to time and time again.......2005-09-10

I have read this book through many times and appreciate the messages every time. It is also a book that I give as gifts to friends (a great housewarming gift) because it is not preachy, it is an easy read, and it gets to the heart of our connection between the outer world and our inner spirit.

4 out of 5 stars Find Peace In Your Home.......2005-08-08

I read this after thoroughly reveling in her other book, Leading a Charmed Life. This one was more work to get through, since it's not in the one-thought-to-a-page format of Charmed Life.
The ideas appeal (learn to meditate, relate housekeeping to nurturing yourself rather than as a chore, etc.)
The author shows her own struggle to develop her spirit and find a peaceful haven in her home. Too many Americans think that buying stuff will bolster their ego and erase feelings of deficiency. Save yourself a bundle of money and wasted time in the stores. Read some of Moran's books and find more satisfying ways to enrich your life.

        5 out of 5 stars Interesting recipes.......2005-07-24

I just orderes this book as I am primarily vegetarian (eat some fish) and it is easy to fall into a rather boring routine of a few favorites. The Basics section alone was worth the price of the book. It is usually the sauce or dressing that adds the flavor to vegetarian meals - the Chiptole Sauce is HEAVENLY, try the Papaya-Habanero Sauce - WOW. And the Curry butter, Chipotle Mayonaise, Hananero Honey....if you like spicy, or just that added pique, this is truly the book for you. You don't have to be a cook with lots of time - just use the Basics and add to your normal cooking. Or use the recipes like Autumn Black Bean Salsa to add to pasta,Green Papaya Salad (a personal favorite), Marinated Garbanzo Bean Salad, etc. Personally I don't make recipes which all for loads of preparation and I find this to be a wonderful book which will add great dimenson to your cooking with minor effort.

        4 out of 5 stars Refreshingly Spicy.......2003-03-03

For the most part, I really like this book. I get really tired of boring vegetarian recipes, and enjoy that I have a complete array of spicy choices to cook from this book. She combines interesting ingredients that create suprisingly delightful dishes. My only complaint is that some of the receipes are complicated and time consuming to make. My favorite recipe is the Roasted Corn Chipotle Soup...it is incredibly spicy, but so delicious.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of variety.......2002-08-11

This is a neat book - it has a real variety of recipes, covering lots of different nationalities (although not spelled out per se) and there are all sorts of tid bits of advice in here that discuss things types of noodles, and there are even thought provoking quotes scattered through. Recipes are good - they're a bit more adventurous than I first expected which is great. They're combinmations I might not have thought of on my own so it's been fun learning new things. (e.g. corn on the cob with chipolte-tequilla butter) I highly recommend it! (and it's not *that* spicy) Another good book is Some Like it Hot by Robin Robinson

        4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-08-17

The meals are great. If you like it spicy, this book has it. Additionally, the range of genres is fantastic. You can do oriental, mexican, italian, etc. Best of all, a great deal of the meals are vegan, not just vegetarian. You don't have to worry about your diet. It's there. The recipes aren't simple, but they're worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Not a Vegetarian cookbook alone, a great spicy resource too!.......1997-09-01

Vegetarian foods are not just for vegetarians. With today's healthier eating and with so many people having alternatives to the main meat dish, many books have been written towards vegetarian eating. Jennifer Trainer Thompson has written Jump Up and Kiss Me ~ Spicy Vegetarian Cooking published by 10 Speed Press. I met the "Hot" Jennifer in New York recently, and she sent me a copy of her newest book, and after reviewing this one, I now want her others that include the Great Hot Sauce Book, Hot Licks and Trail of Flame. She was also involved in a boater's cookbook, the Yachting Cookbook. Jump Up and Kiss Me is a nominee for The James Beard Awards and many of the recipes show why. Some of the recipes that are found in this book include: Sundried Tomato Relish with Cayenne Toasts; Roasted Shitake and Walnut Pate; Sweet Potato Fritters with Jerk Sauce; Artichokes with Rosemary-Curry Vinaigrette; Toasted Corn Salsa, Portuguese Vegetable Stew; Shitake Stew with Crisp Polenta; Buckwheat Pasta with Peanut-Coconut Sauce; Rice Noodles with Vegetables, tofu, and Watercress; Pasta Gratin with Mustard Greens; Focaccia Pizza with Pears, Walnuts, and Gorgonzola; Chutney, red Pepper, and Grilled Cheddar Sandwich; Hot 'n' Dirty Rice Salad; Jalapeno-Onion Corn Sticks; and Rosemary-Serrano Red Wine Vinegar. The book is filled with many great recipes with a lot of ingredient information throughout the book. There are no suggestions to alternatives to the ingredients used for other recipe ideas, and in my opinion the paper the book is printed on, is not conducive for a cookbook. The paper is a newsprint style absorbent paper and not a slick cleanable paper that should be used for cookbooks. This would have been a great book to have some of the recipes in full color photographs, yet I'm, sure due to higher cost were not available. In spite of these few setbacks, Jump Up and Kiss Me is a great vegetarian cookbook, and an even better spicy recipe reference. Most of the ingredients are available through your local grocer, with only a handful that may need to be purchased from a specialty store

2 out of 5 stars Not useful to me.......2007-01-28

I am sorry that this book does not seem very useful to me. This text is highly recommended by noted authorities in woodworking. Much of the information seems very dated. Other areas, such as descriptions of joints and specific types of dovetails seem to be too limited to be of use to a novice like myself. I feel I wasted money on this purchase and I wish I could see the value that much better craftsman than myself place on it.

3 out of 5 stars A must have book because it covers many subjects, but...........2004-05-31

this book is great because it covers many many subjects, though not in that much detail or in very fine methods. it is very much out of date. the book is written for a british audience which is some times annoying, and there are many biased comments (in my opinion) that are british/european ways of working/thinking. the author also makes too many comments that voice his personal opinion, which is not all that important in a how-to book and is very different from my own opinions. I felt that the writer/editor or whoever disigned the format of the book must have been very lazy, because instead of placing pictures and the related text on the same page where you can see them clearly, there are countless instances where all the diagrams on a subject matter are slapped onto one or two pages and then refered to in text that is sometimes 3 or more pages away. very frustrating. The major strong point is that you can find many uncommon subjects such as info on tambours or webbing for seats, which is why i say that this book is a must have. the area where this book really falls short is the making of FINE furniture. I feel like this book is oriented towards readers that would make a living of furniture making, therefore the methods are just 'good enough,' and many of the furniture examples are very showy, with not much content, some you could call "expensively cheap." many of the examples are just awful - over use of and complete reliance on expensive showy wood, sharp veneered corners, awkward shapes, etc. if you want to see examples of fine, solidly constructed work that doesn't scream for attention, look at some of James Krenov's books. there you will find many fine details of woodworking, though some of the text is unclear at first. of course, there are many other fine works out there. between "The Encyclopedia of Furniture Making" and "The Complete Manual of Woodworking," i personally recogmend the latter, although it is far from "complete." The Complete Manual of Woodworking" covers less subjects but goes into more detail, contains more usable info (instead of one writer's opinions), and has much better pictures and furniture examples.

          1 out of 5 stars Outdated.......2003-04-07

Every pictures looks like they were tooks in 1940's. Chapter on electrical tools is completely outdated. Nothing about new material like HDF/MDF. There's no "easy to understand" drawing nor plans. For a beginner it's not very interresing, this books is more based on "reading" and explanations than showing "how to". I'd ratter recommend books like "Complete guide to furniture and cabinet making" by A. Ray.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2002-04-05

Very usefull book and easy to understand

4 out of 5 stars Great reference book........2002-03-23

If you're new to woodworking, and you want the 10,000 foot view on woodworking then this is the book for you. I'd say that 75% of what the book contains is useful, 25% fluff and pictures. It could go into greater detail... but I think that each specific section in the book is likely worthy of it's own book. Let's be realistic... howe can an author tell you everything you need to know about finishing in one chapter? Or all the subtlties of joinery in 2 chapters?

Overall, a decent book and makes a handy addition to my library.

                      Book Description

'Leonard Felder understands what couples are facing in their everyday lives....I highly recommend this book and its eight steps.'-Michael Gurian, What Could He Be Thinking? One of the nation's top experts on how to improve complex family dynamics, Leonard Felder, Ph.D., has been counseling couples for more than 20 years. In his experience, the inklings of worry and moments of boredom that many individuals feel in their good relationships have to be addressed sooner rather than later to head off the loss of what could be a great relationship. Dr. Felder has found that by following the eight specific and realistic steps he outlines to address the problem areas that most often drive mates apart, couples can overcome the odds and create a healthy, immensely satisfying intimacy.

                      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Read for All Couples.......2006-02-07

I found this book very helpful. Concrete, clear advice with real life scenarios help readers work out many common relationship problems.
                      An easy read.
One thing that I loved about this book was it's inclusion of same sex couples in some of the scenarios. Dr. Felder does a great job at recognizing that conflicts arise in couples without descriminating against gender or sexual orientation.

It's unfortunate that some readers may not pick this book up until it is too late. Problems can only be resolved when both people are willing to work together...that is apparent throughout the book.

A must-read for those experiencing un-resolved conflict...and for those who just want to sharpen their relationship skills.

4 out of 5 stars A Guide to Understanding Yourself and Your Mate.......2005-05-09

Wake Up or Break Up- 8 Crucial Steps to Strengthening Your Relationship is so positive and so direct that you feel quite comfortable reading Dr. Felder's advice. You find yourself saying, "Oh my goodness, that's what I do." You never feel defensive or attacked, and neither will your partner. It is safe to pass this book on for reading and sharing.

Felder reminds us that there are warning signs when a relationship is in trouble and that it is up to individuals and their partners to recognize and acknowledge the signs. The next step is to start repairing the damage before the relationship is beyond repair. This is where Dr. Felder shines, he give real case scenarios with everyday problems. He discusses others who come with your partner as part of your union--friends, family, an ex-spouse.

This book is divided by steps instead of chapters. Step One starts with what Dr. Felder calls The Four Imbalancers: The Unintentional Bulldozer, The Martyr, The Unilateral Decision-Maker and The Nice Person Who Reaches The Breaking Point. These titles need no explanation--you may already see yourself. Step Eight offers advice on how to keep your repaired relationship strong.

Wake Up or Break Up- 8 Crucial Steps to Strengthening Your Relationship is more than a quick-fix guide for couples, it is a guide to understanding yourself and your mate.

                      Highly recommended.

                        Book Description

Over 175 years ago George Catlin, American painter, writer and explorer, realized that the white settlers would eventually destroy the native cultures of North America. Devoting his life to preserving the Indian heritage, he traveled throughout the West sketching and painting hundreds of Indian portraits, village scenes, religious rituals and games. Eager to preserve the vanishing tribes and customs of the Native Americans through his art, his encounters with these fascinating people resulted in the book, The North American Indians, a collection of his letters with over 400 illustrations. Catlin toured Europe for eight years presenting his famous collection of portraits and sketches. As a result of this tour, Catlin published ADVENTURES OF THE OJIBBEWAY AND IOWAY INDIANS concentrating on these two intriguing tribes in this two-volume set.
