I picked this book up from a popular restaurant on the middle penisula of Virginia looking for something to read from the local area with historical flavor. What I ended up with was a bittersweet love story of a Civil War Soldier. Lt. Robert Gaines Haile, Jr. was a good looking man, and devoted to the cause. He joined the Esex Sharpshooters to do his duty, and was wounded in battle and died with his wife in attendance. While you hear of thousands of husbands, brothers, fathers and sons that died in the Civil War, this small book brings home the story poignently, while simultaneously describing in great historical detail the geographic area, the people around him, and the battles he encountered. The descendant who wrote the books with Mr. Haile's compiled letters did an excellent job of gathering many factual details, photos, and maps of what his ancestor was describing.
Highly recommended for a tour through history from someone who actually was in the middle of the action and literate enough to write about it.

Mr. Tombes provides much background into the early Civil War history of the 55th VA Infantry. The letters and journal entrys from his ancestor, Lt. Robert G. Haile, Jr. reveal the thoughts and hopes of the early Confederate soldier. The book gave insight into the reasons that the south fought, a soliders feelings towards the slaves that his family kept and the dislike of war. I was interested in this work as background to the unit that my great great grandfather- Benjamin Warner Pritchett fought in. If you are interested in the 55th VA, this book is a must have.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The diary entries and letters of Lt. Robert Gaines Haile show a side of the Civil War that is not normally seen. Each document reveals many of the human details of life that are usually forgotten or overlooked by most Civil War historians. The editor, Robert M. Tombes, does a brilliant job of seamlessly combining the original documents with maps and explanations that allow the reader to follow Haile's progress through the War. I recommend this book for the reader who wants to gain an understanding of what life was really like for those who served during the War. The length of the book makes it manageable and the contents makes it priceless.

What an amazing collection of italian soup recipes! If you want to fill the house with great aromas and please your guests, this book will get you there. The collection is divided by types of soup, i.e. pasta e fagioli, vegetable soups, bean soups, rice and pasta soups, etc. Pappa e pomodoro, broccoli rabe and white bean soup, and escarole soup with tiny meatballs are our three favorites, and all three are so good that we serve them for guests at holiday dinners. By the way, soups are a great place for a fledgling cook to start making real food, and this book will give you lots of very accessible ideas of just where to begin.

This cookbook has the most wonderful soup recipes in it - thick and hearty with deep, rich flavor - I learned so many new tricks for making a good soup taste GREAT! And even better, the soups freeze well so you can make a different recipe each night and freeze the leftovers for another time.
The recipes are easy to read and not too time consuming. While you can always substitute for some of the ingredients listed, splurge and get the items mentioned at least once - I guarantee you will not regret it!
These recipes are not for carb haters or low fat fans. The liberal use of cheese, butter and full bodied broths precludes that. But the recipes are still healthy - They involve lots of veggies, olive oil, herbs and are chock full of good stuff!
Even the most finicky soup eaters will find a favorite recipe in this book. A good bread, salad, a nice wine and one of the soups from this book and you have the perfect meal!

Reading this book just makes my mouth water and it has some history of Italy, with references to just about every spice and tasty combinations. Wow, I ran out and bought a soup pot! One downside, making broth, Uh! Although I will say the book offers substituted canned broth I just don't want to throw these wonderful ingredients into anything less! This is a great book for readers too, I loved hearing about the Famularo family!

Not only are the soups tasty and inventive; but they are sensible and nutritious. They require little time and ingredients that are neither exotic, nor hard to find. Most recipe books are loaded with expensive ingredients that necessitate driving 20 miles from your home, and that you use only for one particular recipe. I want recipes that use inexpensive stuff I have on hand, or will have no trouble finding. This book meets those requirements. I read cookbooks like other people read novels, and this is the best cookbook I've ever had. Now that he's conquered the soup pot, Joe needs to move on to pastas and more.
A downright miracle.......2002-02-11
I'm not a cook. But during winter months especially, I do make a few soups to help in the household. And this book is the one I usually use as my guide. I need a recipe. I need recipes that are foolproof. And here is where I get them. Not only does every recipe end in a soup that is edible, but one that is tasty and repeatable. That, with this "cook", is downright miraculous! There is variety here, a learning experience, and in the end a soup that is invariably a tasty success. And I'm not even Italian.

I was skeptical about by this book based on the cover, but as a graphic designer who is a little shaky on their pre-press skills I thought it would be helpful. Come to find out I should have gone with my gut. I did find a few paragraphs to be informative and helpful, but would not recommend this book to someone- especially not at it's suggested price. The book itself had alot of random information that did not seem to flow together and unless you knew some about pre-press you would have a hard time following and as someone with some pre-press knowledge you would not get your money's worth.

Fun and easy way to teach little ones to write!.......2006-03-24
I bought Hooked on Handwriting for my daughter - age 4 - and she is loving it. The lessons are great for kids with very little previous printing instruction because they start with learning the most basic lines and curves (using a big marker that is easy for little fingers to control) and progress to using a regular pencil to write upper and lowercase letters while staying between "the lines". She loves the printable activities on the CD-ROM. Yesterday she did the "Thank You Note" activity and today she made some bookmarks.

My son who just turned five has been using the Hooked on Phonics series for the past year. He has learned very quickly and just finished level 3. I am really pleased with the Hooked on Phonics system of reading and highly recommend it to anyone teaching their kids to read.
However I am somewhat dissapointed in the new Hooked on Handwriting. My son and I sat down last night and completed the first workbook. He's a bit advanced for that portion, but I wanted him to go through it anyway just to make sure he wasn't missing any skills needed later.
The thing that struck me while watching him was that all things he had to draw were too big. In order to complete each task, for example drawing a curve, he had to repeatedly stop, move his hand, and continue. In addition, he also was holding the marked fairly far from the tip (2 to 3 inches) so that he could make a larger strokes before he would have to adjust his hand.
After looking forward at the other two workbooks, they continue to use very large letters. I'm not an educator, nor do I have any prior experience in teching kids to write. This is my first. However I don't think my son is learning the proper skills to effectively print. The motions he is practicing in this program are different than the motions needed to print a sentence on a piece of even large lined paper.

Our church book study group mistakenly purchased this Bad Girls of the Bible instead of the one by the other author.
While I had great difficulty getting through the first chapter, I am now using this book to improve my understanding of the Bible, and to learn more about ancient times.
This writer makes-up her own story lines, and conveniently leaves out portions of chapters and verses that do not fit her story line. For example, in chapter two, she states that Egypt where Joseph is held as a slave by Potiphar, is a dry hot land. Perhaps she should read just a little earlier in the Bible. In Genesis 13:10, we are told different.
10 Lot looked up and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, toward Zoar.
While the ordering of this book was a mistake on the part of the person who ordered the books for us, I believe it is a Godsend for us to read and discuss this book, though I doubt we will actually be using the questions at the end of each chapter. Instead we will ask questions regarding her inaccurate portrayal of these women and the facts of history.

Our women's small group has gotten alot of knowledge and insight from this book! Bad Girls of the Bible helps us discuss some topics that we might not otherwise. The author is wonderful at helping us see the character of these women. It is very well written. I highly recommend this book for a bible study with your girlfriends!

Liz Curtis Higgs juxtaposes fiction and nonfiction in the same book. Read the stories of modern "bad girls" while guessing what Bible character they represent. Then read the nonfiction essay on the Biblical "bad girl". Find out how they were bad, why they were bad, and what God did about it. Liz describes herself as a "former bad girl", so she really gets inside the skin of these women. This book is so good that I can't keep it on hand. I've lent out and given away multiple copies to women who never fail to enjoy the book and experience God in a meaningful way. Get one for yourself and one for your daughter/mother/best friend. (I'm a former bad girl myself.) Then go for Really Bad Girls of the Bible and Unveiling Mary Magdalene by the same author.

Wow was I disappointed... I love to hear Joyce preach! I love to read her books! She is so anointed! And she always speaks to me. However, maybe it's just me, but this audiotape wasn't the same. When she read the book she wrote, I found it to be dry and without life. How to Hear from God is another of her great books! Please don't discount the book if you didn't like the audiotape of it being read. I won't get another tape of her reading her books. I'll just continuing listening to her teaching tapes, reading her books, and watching her programs on tv and online.

This book and the study guide that goes with it are helping me understand the word of God. Daily study with these, and other materials from the Joyce Meyer library, is enriching my life. I highly recommend it to anyone, especially those who are studying the bible alone, as I am.

I love this book! Joyce Meyer is one of my favorite authors/speakers/teachers. This book will put you on the right track in learning to do what's necessary in your life so you can prepare for a true and meaningful relationship with God. If you want to know Him better and be led by the Spirit, then buy this book!
Inspirational and Enlightening!!.......2007-02-01
I have read many of Joyce Meyer's books and I really enjoyed this book the most and in my opinion a very enlightening book as it really has helped me with my relationship with God and how he truly corresponds with us.
This is a must if you want to Hear from God!!!
