A good resource for the newly diagnosed but if you are an old hat at this stuff, read something else. It is nice to have on hand though when OTHER people start having problems and they come to you for info. because they know you have problems. You can hand them this to borrow.

Good overview, if a bit outdated.......2004-05-30

This is a very good general introduction to the Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis, for the family, friends, or patient that has been recently diagnosed with one of these diseases. It covers the details of the disease and also current treatment IBD (circa 1983). However, please understand that this book has not been updated since 1983. There have been many, many developments in the treatment of these diseases and the prognosis is much better than when this book was written. (They essentially only had Prednisone and Sulfasalizine for treatment at the time). They now have Remicade and other drugs used to treat IBD that are not addressed.

Overall not a bad book, but you can probably find all of this information, plus information on newer developments, in some of the other books on IBD. Needless to say, if you buy this book, don't make it your only book on IBD.

Great information on Crohn's Disease.......2003-12-27

As a Crohn's Disease patient, I used this book as a source for a research project. Although, currently there are more up-to-date sources, this book provided me with a vast amount of background information regarding the disease.

A must have book for anyone suffering from these diseases.......2001-06-02

Six months ago I was faced with the reality that I had Crohn's Disease. At that point I wanted to get my hands on as much reading material as I could on the subject (because when you are sick about all you can do is sit and read anyway). Out of all the books I have read on the subject I can honestly say that this book is one of the best overall books on the subject.

This book is devided in three major sections. The first part is about The Nature of the disease. In this section the book discusses basic definitions, who gets the diseases, what causes them, how it is diagnosed, and systemic manifestations.

The next section is about Treating the Diseases. This section covers medications and their side effects, nutritional complications, surgery, and the threat of cancer.

The last section covers Living with the Diseases. This talks about diseases in children, pregnancy, older people, emotions, hospitalization, life insurance and medical insurance, what to do if you become disabled.

I recommend this book for anyone who suffers with either of these diseases. This book is a fantastic handbook/reference book for people who are sick with these illnesses. It has helped me unterstand my Crohn's disease better then I ever thought possible. I wish you all the best!!

If you have IBD you need this book........2000-10-14

It used to be that this was the only 'laypersons' book out there for people suffering from IBD. Newly diagnosed with ulcerative colitis 10 years ago, I found this book to be enlightening and informative. It helped me to get a handle on things when I felt my life spiraling out of control due to a disease I had never even heard of before. Today those suffering from ulcerative colitis and Chrohn's Disease have more reading material at their disposal, but this book remains as the staple for any person suffering from IBD. It can also serve as an invaluable resource to friends and family of IBD survivors who also feel confused and helpless. Anyone who has ever taken prednisone for IBD knows the symptoms and treatments for these diseases can make articulate and unemotional explanations almost impossible to formulate. Handing over a copy of this to your siblings, parents, spouse, or even your roommate is the best thing you can do for them, and for yourself.

The Best Cookbook ever.......2006-02-02

I received this cookbook as a wedding present. It made me become a great cook. Not trendy, but definately not boring. The recipes grow as your skills does. My daughter spilled something and the pages stuck together and I went brough a newer addition, but it is not the same. I own over 20 cookbooks but always go back to this one.

This was my very first cookbook, and I've never found its equal. The recepies may not be as flash as some of the newer, trendier chef cookbooks, but this one has everything you need to begin cooking for yourself, right through to medium level recepies. From explanations of what "julienne" and "caramelize" mean, to what spices work with what foods, to how to organize a buffet table, to how to eat a balanced meal. Recepies for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, snacks, drinks, appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, etc. And best of all, how to cook most any food without any preperation, spices, herbs, or fuss! Want to have a plain meal of steak, beans and potatoes? This book will tell you how. Want to have a plate of the best beef stroganoff you'll ever taste? It's in there as well. A must have for every kitchen, I use it almost daily.

I bouth this one when I first moved out of the house, and my Mom confiscated her 1962 edition. Of all the cookbooks I have bought since then, this one gets used at least weekly!!! AT one point I wanted my bookshelf to look "cooler" so I bought Mark Bittman's "How to Cook Everything." Betty Crocker still wins hands down in quality and variety of recipes (not to mention his book fell apart after a few uses.

Buy this edition or any of the newer editions that followed, and you will never go wrong! And as corny as it sounds, the notebook style is a great idea, I have stuffed mine full of all kinds of recipes, it is like the book that continues to grow with me.

This is the COOLEST scrapbooking book ever! I loved it because it validates MY STYLE of scrapbooking...I'm always on the lookout for items in my own stash to use as embellishments so I don't have to BUY such things. The use of these items makes my pages much more personal and unique...that's what creativity is all about, isn't it? I'm also not one to follow "patterns" and I don't like the look of pre-made embellishments, but rather like to add unusual items for surprise effects in my work...other people tend to ooh & aah a lot more because they are surprised at the effects I come up with, USING ONLY FOUND OBJECTS! Don't let the "one star" review influence you in buying this book...if you are CREATIVE, you'll love it! It is chock full of great ideas that I never thought of!

Great book However.......2007-07-18

This is a great book that has great pictures and wonderful information on how to choose and start an alternative lawn. I give it 5 stars because it truly provides what it touts, perhaps with a little extra unnecessary information.
However, EASY LAWNS by Brooklyn Botanic Gardens gives all you need to know at half the price. It, too, has nice pictures. It is smaller and a paperback where WILD LAWN HANDBOOK is a hardcover.

An indispensable guide for progressive gardeners.......1997-06-20

There are quite a few books out now about why we shouldn't stick with the traditional grass lawn, but this is the best one I've seen to explain the practical alternatives, with inspiring photos and helpful appendices. Ms. Daniels is really concerned with the aesthetics as well as the politics of environmentally friendly yards. I recommend it to all my friends who are thinking about getting rid of some or all of the grass. A "9" just because I wish it had more pictures

Book lovers will want to buy this book simply because it is such a beautiful little book. It's nicely laid out at the perfect size for a little book, printed on slick paper and has dozens and dozens of top quality photographs.

I am not a lawn or gardening expert, but this little book seems to me to be chock full of good information. The section on ground covers other than grass, such as bulbs, perenials, and bushes is particularly good for such a short book. In addition, there are scores of tips and techniques for everthing from filling in low spots in your lawn to raking and aerating to planting bulbs under your lawn and dividing and propagating bulbs and other plants.

There are deficiencies. In particular, there is no discussion of soil PH, and the coverage of grass species is poor. A page on each of these topics would improve the book a great deal. A simple chart of grass species and their characteristics would be a great help.

I would characterize this as an "idea" book. You will get a lot of useful information about how to care for your grounds, but you will need to supplement this book with another for really comprehensive coverage of lawn care. Try "Lawn Care for Dummies."

As a mother of 3 small daughters and a prevention specialist, I thought this book was great. It gives easy, age appropriate answers for questions that parents may be uncomfortable answering because of the subject matter or lack of knowledge. The Best of Mahonri Young.......2005-09-12

Mohonri Young is an artist who doesn't seem to get the respect that he deserves. Admittedly, I am a Utahn and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Young's most significant works are sculptures realted to LDS history, but I think that anyone can enjoy his artwork. This book showcases his LDS themed sculpture (including "This is the Place Monument," and sculptures of Brigham Young, Joseph Smith, and Hyrum Smith). It also shows a lot of his other work, including numerous excellent sculptures of boxers and laborers. I recommend that you check out this artist.

The book is a good look at the life and work of Mohonri Young--as the title indicates. Many of the photographs are in color, but unfortunately there are several that were only reproduced in black and white. This is understandable, but dissappointing. Also, to me the paper seemed a little thin.

Overall, this is a good book. It's certainly the best book I've see about Mahonri Young.

Nothing can remedy that except for an individual chronological revolution happening in the minds of a large enough number of people.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
