Book Description

Women At Risk: We Also Served is about women who served our country since before World War II and since then. They each explain why they volunteered, how their lives were changed, and answer the question, “Would I do it again?” More than 60 women are profiled in this book who were in the military, volunteered for war zones as civilians, or family members who waited for their loved ones to return. Their stories are finally being shared—many for the first time.

5 out of 5 stars Well Written Bios of Women Who Have Served.......2006-06-06

Most of us old veterans already know of Noonie Fortin, or at least have heard of her, from her website writings and her best selling book about Martha Raye. I know that is how I discovered her many years ago. Well, there is about to be a whole new generation of veterans and civilians who will discover her writings anew when they read her book, "Women At Risk - We Also Served."

This book captures the historic lives of many wonderful women who served this country in various roles including some in combat zones. Her bios of women, who's service spans a time from WWII through the present time, highlights stories and events that have not been told in this public way before. Her book breaks new ground as it shares personal memories that normally are only communicated between immediate family members. Although the majority of the stories focus on those women in military uniform, it also deals with volunteers who served their country in other ways. Every story is a gem in a treasure chest of pure history.

There is so much love in this book for the women profiled. You can see and feel the care that the author gives to each woman's story. The author does not try to paint all these women as heroes, although many really are in the truest sense of that word, but as real people who made personal sacrifices for their country. Some of these women have also paid a physical and psychological price for their service. This book attempts to recognize their efforts and their many achievements.

This book is well written and lays to rest that old rumor that the author was actually born in a military footlocker! Noonie has a way with her words; making every story feel like you are sitting down with each women in her home to listen to their personal tales in person. The book breaks into many short little chapters that make it a delight to read for people who have small blocks of time - like lunch time or between other life events.

This is a must read book. It is given the MWSA highest rating and recommendation. It is a book that will become a classic on women's history.

5 out of 5 stars An engrossing panorama of brave women.......2002-12-13

Freelance book reviewer Donna Eggett wrote:

Interested in military history? Here's a book to round out your information. With heroes on every page, "Women At Risk" by Noonie Fortin, rolls out an engrossing panorama of brave women who have served their country faithfully, shedding their blood, giving their lives, using their talents, fighting beside and saving their fellows. Covering American history from before WW II to present day, chapter by chapter you meet these brave, resourceful women, including: Jean Hayes, following family tradition as she joined the Coast Guard in WW II; Laura Dunlop, cryptologist during the Korean War; Bernice Whiteside, volunteer Army nurse in Vietnam; Pam Waterston, an Army Heavy Equipment Operator serving in the Persian Gulf, watched, wished, hoped and prayed as she served with her fellow soldiers on ammunition guard duty at the Port of Al Jubayl.

Having given twenty-two years of service, Vietnam Era veteran, First Sergeant Noonie Fortin knows her subject intimately. Fortin interviewed each women personally before including them in this book. Written in simple, potent language, with appealing detail and many photographs, "Women At Risk", provides interesting reading for a wide age spread, middle school through adult. Libraries, schools and individuals will find it a useful reference book. Several practical appendices add to the convenience of this book: bibliography; listing of service organizations; roll call of women looking for military buddies; glossary; an exhaustive index; suggested activities for students.

5 out of 5 stars Women At Risk is astonishing!.......2002-10-05

Women At Risk is astonishing. I've not found any book that gives such a detailed yet wide ranging picture of women in all branches of the United States military as this one does. I came to it with the mind-set of a WW II veteran, a woman who served in the Women's Army Corps attached to the Air Force. I was convinced our way was best-women living in a separate area with female officers, serving in limited jobs such as file clerks, stenographers, dental technicians, librarians, and postal clerks. We could say yes or no to overseas duty, and many of us stayed on the same military post the entire enlistment period. A common complaint was lack of promotions, and few of us had the opportunity to attend a training school. When six of us WACs qualified as airplane engine mechanics, many obstacles had to be overcome before we were allowed to work on the flight line, the first WACs in our service command to do so. We never handled weapons and did not teach males nor command them.

That is not true of the women who came after us, and how tame our lives seem in contrast. As this book shows, these later women were stationed around this country and all over the world as well as aboard ship. They were trained for a variety of jobs vital to our national security, attended many different schools, and attained high ranks. Among other subjects, they taught weaponry to male soldiers. Some of them served in more than one branch of the military. They've won many medals, ribbons, and awards. They've coped with problems we never dreamed of, at least at my airfield: discharges because of suspected lesbianism, rapes, sexual harassment, actual hatred for being a service woman, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Agent Orange.

Though Women At Risk gives a summary of women who served prior to 1945, the emphasis is on women who have served during peace and war after WWII. Those of us who preceded 1945 are credited with being pioneers, of paving the way for the women who served during Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm. But I refuse the accolade. These young women sketched in Women At Risk are a different breed and I applaud them. They took control of their lives, their careers. They earned college degrees by correspondence courses, they studied for advancement in the service by correspondence courses. They served in Reserve units. Though some of them made mistakes, instead of meekly accepting the discharge decreed for them, they took action to correct their mistakes and insisted on being given a second chance. When the military reneged on promises made to them, did these women accept it? No! They either wrote their Commander in Chief, the President of the United States, or lodged a Congressional complaint. In either case, they got the justice due them.

Women At Risk provides a fascinating look at these take-charge women who speak with unusual frankness of their lives in the armed forces. It is a long book, but it is set up so that it can be kept within handy reach for reading when only a short span of time is available. Besides, these stories are so strong they are best-appreciated in small segments. I recommend Women At Risk to anyone who doubts the contributions of women in the military, and to everyone who is interested in women's history.

The book is indexed, and has a helpful glossary. The author, a veteran herself, works tirelessly for the welfare of veterans, but especially "the silent veterans" (women), and Gold Star Mothers...

5 out of 5 stars Highly inspirational and patriotic testimonies.......2002-07-06

Women At Risk: We Also Served by Vietnam Era military veteran Noonie Fortin is an informative and inspiring presentation of women who served and helped protect America from before World War II down to the present day. Women in all branches of the military are remembered with tributes, as well as the women who volunteered as civilians. Including clerks, drivers, nurses, USO and ARC volunteers and others, more than sixty women tell their personal stories. A compendium of highly inspirational and patriotic testimonies, Women At Risk is strongly recommended for Women's Studies and Military History supplemental reading lists.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and True stories you can't find elsewhere.......2002-05-18

This is THE book to read if you have ever wondered about the women who serve in the United States military! What are they like? Why did they choose their careers? What has their service meant to them? All these questions and so many more are answered in these compelling and evocative stories told by the women who lived them and a writer who got to know them personally and well. Ms. Fortin has the added insights afforded her by her own service to our country, and she has done a remarkable job of helping these ladies from all eras and areas of service tell their important stories. I highly recommend Women at Risk, and if you did not care about these fine women who served and sacrificed, you will after reading this book.

3 out of 5 stars Eight Pieces of Brocade.......2006-08-11

A very interesting presentation of one approach to QiGong. A good addition to a student of the art's library. Well written and easy to follow with an abundance of clear pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Qigong and Eight Pieces of Brocade.......2006-04-30

Although thin, this book contained more information than I expected. It talks about what is qi and what is qigong (including its history), it tells the life story of this set's creator - Marshall Yue Fei, and enumerates the main qigong purposes (i.e for healing, maintaing health, prolonging life, martial arts and enlightenment). The two main categories are explained: Wai Dan (External Elixir) and Nei Dan (Internal Elixir). In Taoist terminology, the book talks about the three treasures: Jing (essence), Qi (energy) and Shen (spirit), which can be nurtured through Qigong training. In order to succeed, one needs to regulate the body, mind, breath, Qi and spirit - only then the benefits which one can reap from training will be reaped.
The next two chapters present the sitting and standing set of "Eight pieces of brocade", respectively. There are details, but not exhaustive, and I feel that one should also get the DVD with the same name to have a better understanding of the sets - short of having a teacher. This is actually what Dr. Yang recommends - work with both the book and DVD, for there are details which cannot be explained in the latter, but you cannot get the feel and moves from the former as much as from the DVD.
The book ends with a rather comprehensive glossary of terms (book names, authors, masters, etc.) and with an index.
All in all, this is a great book for beginners, but by all means it cannot be considered the end - it is only an introduction, and a good one. This being said, there might be probably better introductions in other books, but everyone has to start somewhere, and this work isn't bad at all.

5 out of 5 stars Antidote for our unhealthy lives.......2004-10-26

With HMOs, insurance headaches, premiums driven up by the 65 percent of Americans who are overweight, increasing daily stress, we all could use a magic elixir for energy and increased quality of life. Who better to provide it than the Chinese, inventors of tai chi chuan, green tea as a curative, and acupuncture?

Qigong, as alternative health expert Dr. Wang Jwing-Ming explains, functions like tai chi chuan or yoga as a way of maintaining longevity, youth, energy and health. Dr. Yang explains that most practitioners of qigong seek enlightenment, awareness and health through wai dan (physical tai chi type qigong) or nei dan (meditation).

Once you have read the half of the book devoted to the nature of qigong, like most Westerners, you're itching to get started. Dr. Yang stresses that qigong is not about fancy moves, but about careful attention. The exercises, like weight or strength training, require several repetitions. The qigong exercises may seem slow. However, for those who are sick and tired of being sick and tired, patience will pay off when you choose to set aside 10-20 minutes a day. The accompanying videotape purports to be another great investment in your health. Dr. Yang skillfully shows us the path to wellness.

    4 out of 5 stars Real Poetry.......2000-02-05

Having had a certain experience in Chi Kong and Tai Chi, I found this book very helpful, as a matter of fact a real poetry both intellectually and CHI wise. I have read many of Dr. Yang's books which I found very instructive. I wanted this book for its exercises and was attracted by the fact that they can be performed in 10-20 minutes. This was my only disappointment. How can this be possible when you have to perform each exercise at least 24 times? Personally, it takes me about 40 minutes, 40 enjoyable minutes.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent representation of classic Chi-gong exercises........1999-07-04

Although I would recommend this text to even a beginner, Chi-gong is perhaps not the easiest thing to initially learn without someone to guide you. If you've had any previous experience in Chi-gong, Tai-chi or a decent amount of an external martial art, this is an invaluable text not just for improving your health, but also increasing the effectiveness of your energy when you need it most.

To answer the question, "What does Mediterranean mean and what is Mediterranean food" in The Mediterranean Feast, Clifford Wright delves into not merely history, but also agronomy, economics, geography, and more. He dedicates this monumental synthesis of the influences that eventually produced Mediterranean food as we know it to "the philosophers and the cooks." Fortunately, when it seems the intellectuals have taken over completely, one comes on Wright's lyrical description of eating a cassoulet, the golden-crusted, complex French bean stew, and other passages proving that Wright's intense quest for knowledge is based on a cook's culinary passion.

Illustrated with maps and brimming with more than 500 recipes, A Mediterranean Feast is Wright's way of leading the reader beyond the popular, romantic image of this region as an eternally bountiful land. He explains how the complex web of influences between the fall of the Roman Empire in the 6th century and the Age of Reason in the 17th century transformed the Mediterranean from a harsh place where poverty and famine made "dying of hunger ... a defining occurrence," to one we could romanticize, seeing it as ever lush with citrus, sun-ripe tomatoes, laden vines, exquisite cheeses, artisanal breads, and simple but well-fed folk. Those who rise to absorb the encyclopedic knowledge and engage with the ideas set forth in this dense work, such as the peasants' willingness to accept new, unfamiliar foods to relieve the boredom and scarcity of subsistence eating, will receive a profound education about Mediterranean life as it historically relates to food.

While A Mediterranean Feast feeds the mind, it also offers a wealth of authentic and intriguing dishes from the entire region, from France to Algeria and Spain to the Near East. Readers primarily interested in cooking can flip through this massive book, picking out remarkable recipes such as the pine nut omelet of southern France, Umm Ali, a creamy Egyptian pudding containing phyllo, nuts, coconut, and raisins, and Nohutlu Pilavi, the buttery Turkish pilaf of rice simmered with chickpeas. --Dana Jacobi

    Book Description

A groundbreaking culinary work of extraordinary depth and scope that spans more than one thousand years of history, A Mediterranean Feast tells the sweeping story of the birth of the venerated and diverse cuisines of the Mediterranean. Author Clifford A. Wright weaves together historical and culinary strands from Moorish Spain to North Africa, from coastal France to the Balearic Islands, from Sicily and the kingdoms of Italy to Greece, the Balkan coast, Turkey, and the Near East.

The evolution of these cuisines is not simply the story of farming, herding, and fishing; rather, the story encompasses wars and plagues, political intrigue and pirates, the Silk Road and the discovery of the New World, the rise of capitalism and the birth of city-states, the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition, and the obsession with spices. The ebb and flow of empires, the movement of populations from country to city, and religion have all played a determining role in making each of these cuisines unique.

In A Mediterranean Feast, Wright also shows how the cuisines of the Mediterranean have been indelibly stamped with the uncompromising geography and climate of the area and a past marked by both unrelenting poverty and outrageous wealth. The book's more than five hundred contemporary recipes (which have been adapted for today's kitchen) are the end point of centuries of evolution and show the full range of culinary ingenuity and indulgence, from the peasant kitchen to the merchant pantry. They also illustrate the migration of local culinary predilections, tastes for food and methods of preparation carried from home to new lands and back by conquerors, seafarers, soldiers, merchants, and religious pilgrims.

A Mediterranean Feast includes fourteen original maps of the contemporary and historical Mediterranean, a guide to the Mediterranean pantry, food products resources, a complete bibliography, and a recipe and general index, in addition to a pronunciation key. An astonishing accomplishment of culinary and historical research and detective work in eight languages, A Mediterranean Feast is required--and intriguing--reading for any cook, armchair or otherwise.

    5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Read.......2007-09-20

This is one of those cookbooks you buy for pleasure. Not to cook from, but to actually learn the background of what your cooking. While most cookbooks provide little anecdotes about their recipes, this one delves deeply into the history of the mediterranean and its cuisine. We learn how climate, religion and historical circumstances shaped the cuisine of the mediterranean as we know it today. We learn about the major role the islamic civilization played in the region and about the cultural exchanges between the Europeans and the Islamic empire. The recipes, all five hundred of them(!) while excellent (I tried a few) are really incidental and are included so that we get concrete examples of what Wright is talking about. Cooking the recipes and reading the book will give you a true sense of not only what the Mediterranean is like, but what the Mediterranean is.. A definate must read for any one who whats to understand the region

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-06-07

This is not your ordinary cookbook; the authors of the previous reviews who expect one should just go browse at Walmart. This is an incredibly detailed history of food that is entertaining and enlightening--I've read no other quite like it. Every recipe is extremely detailed and comes with its own background, and the history itself is fascinating.

The sheer amount of research that must have gone into this book is astonishing.

As a lover of history, the history of food, and food, and cooking, I found this to be definitely one of the culinary masterpieces of the genre. Bravo.

    5 out of 5 stars Definitely a Feast!!!!.......2006-08-03

If you like history and you like Mediteranean food, you will love this book! Very fascinating stuff....

    2 out of 5 stars Extremely Biased..........2005-08-13

I found this book exciting and interesting as far as the history of true Mediterranean Cuisine, but some of the statements of the author are quite opinionated, bold and brash (and couldn't necessarily be substantiated) and some extremely biased against Christianity. He is an Arab-studies scholar before this, and so it seems he finds time and again places where he can make digs on Christians of the past. I had a hard time getting past his little remarks to get to the real meat of his history.

As far as the recipes...they are a bit disappointing. Like the other reviewer, they are scattered throughout the book, seemingly without organization. While trying to write about true historical Mediterranean cuisine, he throws in modern recipes from friends at various spots....almost like an afterthought. There isn't much rhyme or reason to where or why recipes are in a certain section or chapter.

    And it is very longwinded...

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL BOOK FOR BEGINNERS AND PROFESSIONALS.......2004-02-21

This is a doctoral thesis and complete cookbook all in one. This was given to me as a gift and it is not only informative, but the recipes REALLY WORK. I have a lot of cookbooks, but I will never give this one up, ever. IT has hundreds of recipes with very simple ingredients. Even substitutions for ethnic seasonings is already provided in the book. It is healthy, tasteful, easy to cook and you dont need to be a genius to have wonderful meals with this one. EXCELLENT BOOK.

        Book Description

Share the secrets of talented artist Helen M. Stevens as she reveals how you can recreate the splendour of nature in your embroideries.

Embroidered Flowers, the first title in the Masterclass Embroidery Series, provides a fascinating insight to the beauty of flowers in all their different habitats with step-by-step advice on how to create your own embroidered floral studies.

In five fascinating chapters Helen explores a variety of flowers united by a shared habitat from the now rare treasures of the wildflower meadow - poppies, mallows and cornflowers - to the rambling roses, tall foxgloves and evening primroses of the traditional cottage garden. Each chapter culminates in a masterclass project: a colour template is provided for five original designs ranging in difficulty from simple poppy heads to the more elegant lines of the flat iris. Easy to follow step-by-step colour photographs illustrate the working, in progress, of the designs to ensure that perfect results are achievable.

Finally a basic technique section gives valuable advice on choosing threads and fabrics, the transfer of templates, guidance on silk shading and the working of all Helen's most popular stitches, to guarantee that this becomes the essential guide to creating embroidered floral portraits.

5 out of 5 stars You need this book.......2007-01-17

This book has taken my embroidery to a new level. If you're passionate about embroidery, this is a must have.

        4 out of 5 stars Very useful.......2006-08-21

I like doing embroidery, but was always doing the flowers I was comfortable with, and no shading. I really got to advance with this book. Great ideas for designs, too. Nearly every flower I wanted to do is in here.

4 out of 5 stars BEautiful to look at, hard to understand.......2001-06-16

Once again, Helen has come up with some breathtaking work- the problem? It is hard to understand how to duplicate her work with her book. You are forced to set down and read every word to try to find the item you are interested in. There are no diagrams of HOW to do this or that stitch, so this is NOT a book for a beginner. It IS a book for an accomplished embroiderior, and it is also a great book for inspiration.

4 out of 5 stars Some interesting pictures........2006-02-01

I have not read this book yet - I bought it for it's pictures. It has pictures of some interesting planting combinations and hardscape applications. It contains chapters on Garden History, overviews of various styles (cottage, oriental, wild, parterre), "sense of place" (entries vs. landmarks vs. contemplation vs. workplace, etc.), elements of the garden (paving, light, water, structures, plant palette), a chapter w/ summaries of 15 diff. designers and a chapter on garden wisdom (planning, basics, revision & restoration). The book is well organized and designed and, again, has good pictures. It also has information on sources for plants and materials but since the book is from 1984 it is most likely completely outdated. Not essential but still quite nice.

                1 out of 5 stars Rubbish.......2006-02-26

This man hates the use of herbs for health reason and this book is nothing but rubbish. If you are actually interested in the use of herbs then I would suggest you look into another book. If you are interested in spreading hate about herbalists then this is the book for you.

The title is definately false advertising. Honest and "anti" opinionated is not the same thing.

                1 out of 5 stars Insulting.......2005-09-28

People really need to investigate other herbal sources before holding this one in high regard. It seems like Tyler is more determined to be anti-herb than anything else, shunning even herbs that have been shown to be safe in numerous studies and years of use. He even goes as far as to be smugly insulting toward modern herbalists with some of his comments. Countless errors decorate the pages - or should I say soil them? - and there's really nothing I can say about this book that would get this taste out of my mouth. [...]
It's true we need to get the word out about this book, but not as a recommended read.

1 out of 5 stars Physicians and Pharmaceutical Companies will Love This Book.......2004-10-27

This book will appeal only to people who have vested interest in playing down the effectiveness of herbal products - such as pharmaceutical companies, physicians and others who wouldn't make any money if people didn't need their services any more and were able to heal themselves or maintain good health naturally through the use of herbs.

The title of the book is a misnomer. Tyler doesn't offer any information on how to use the herbs - as a matter of fact, from the way he describes them, you'd be sure he never ever touched, or tasted any herb. If you're read this book, you'll discover that there's no point in using any herbs because there are only two categories for herbs in this book: they either fall in the category of worthless or deadly.

Tyler does his best to downplay or completely disparage the effectiveness of every single herb mentioned, and when he is unable to prove that the particular herb is ineffective, then he states that even though the herb was empirically effective, there is no sufficient research to back it up.

The book is basically loaded with information on why you should not bother using any of the herbs listed in this book - either because in Tyler's opinion they are ineffective or they could be dangerous. And for the herbs that have been proven effective and were in use for centuries, Tyler states how "pharmaceutical industry" lost interest in these herbs. Of course they lost interest - how would they have interest in herbs if they cannot patent that are available everywhere? On the other hand, because of people's interest in herbs, you'll find shelves at your drug store loaded with natural supplements. Some people just don't want to poison themselves with pharmaceutical products (for that matter, you may want to check out compenium of pharamceutical products to find out how deadly side-effects of those can be).

If pharmaceutical industry can not make money, why would they still be interested? And to state that this book is free of commercialism, just "honest" herbal - what a joke!

For burdock, which is a blood purifier, Tyler further states "in spite of its long use as a folkloric remedy, no solid evidence existst that burdock exhibits any useful therapeutic activity." (Burdock happens to be one of the four herbs which have proven very effective in helping people heal innumerable diseases, cancer being one of them, because it does help to detoxify the body.)

About Chickweed, Tyler writes: "Despite the fact that it is prominently listed in almost every catalog of herbs currently available and also that many writers describe it as a valuable herb, I can think of no good reason to allow space to this worthless weed. ... Let's not waste any more time and space on the imagined medicinal value of this ineffective herb." (On a personal note, chickweed is a popular herbal supplement for weight loss...)

And, well, I can only suggest that you invest your money in some other, decent and honest, herbal that actually offers some useful information regarding the use of herbs. Do consult a genuine herbalist who is truly interested in helping people. Tyler's heart only beats for pharmaceutical industry.

Pollen is put in the same category as "peacock's excrement" and to "moss grown on the skull of a man who had died by violence". After listing some nutrients, Tyler states, "None of the identified constituents of pollen has been linked to any significant therapeutic activity as advocated by its enthusiasts."

For burdock, which is a blood purifier, Tyler further states "in spite of its long use as a folkloric remedy, no solid evidence existst that burdock exhibits any useful therapeutic activity."

3 out of 5 stars Honest, but disappointing.......2000-01-25

I enjoy Mr. Tyler's monthly column in Prevention magazine and expected this book to be similar in scope and format. I was disappointed to find that it wasn't; much of it is written in medical terms but I can't imagine it being detailed enough for use by a physician or phamacist. I found the book I was looking for in "The American Pharmaceutical Assocation's Practical Guide to Herbal Health" (don't let the title scare you, it's straight-forward) by Andrea Piece. I do appreciate Mr Tyler honest assessments concerning the use of herbs; however, for me at least, this could also have been a much better book than it turned out to be. I will continuous to enjoy his magazine articles though.

2 out of 5 stars An overly pessimistic herbal review.......1999-04-14

From the evidence presented in this book, Varro Tyler is the Eeyore (or Jiminy Cricket?) of modern herbalists. His reviews of herbs range from lukewarm to scathing. For example, echinacea squeaks by regarded only as "a plant drug that is deserving of continued attention by scientists and clinicians." Chickweed, on the other hand, receives such a bad review that you wonder if Tyler himself was ever personally injured by it. (In his review, he calls it a "weed," a four-letter word to most herbalists.) Generally, his writing is clinical and unsanguine. To his credit, he does present evidence that separates effective herbs from lesser ones, and most importantly, from dangerous ones. By his own admittance, he errs on the side of safety and conservatism -- too much. Equipped only with Tyler's book, a beginning herbalist would consider the healing power of plants with a skepticism and dependence on clinical data far too austere for the realm of herbalism. This is not the place to start such study, but it is a good adjunct and a devil's advocate for the naive and wide-eyed experienced herbalist.

1 out of 5 stars Honest? No way........1997-12-20

This is the most dishonest books on herbs I have ever seen, and I don't believe I will ever see anything to top it - unless Tyler exerts himself again, that is. He writes things like 'Self-treatment with hawthorn is neither advocated nor condoned', when hawthorn is one of the most benign plants there is; another of the truly unlikely statements is 'Unfortunately, ginseng remains a medical enigma with no proven efficacy for humans.' - this from a professor of pharmacognosy, the study of plant constituents? Tyler must not have thought a lot when he wrote this book, and he must have used his head even less when he proofread it. No, truly, leave this book where it belongs - on the shelf of the publisher's warehouse. Go buy a good book about herbs instead - you'll find there's a lot of them, but Tyler's aren't it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Medical Review of Herbs.......1997-12-04

The book is well written, easy to read, and it identifies what has been learned through repeatable scientific means about many herbal substances. In each case the active ingredients are identified, how they work within the body, and what they can be expected to do or not do. Suggestions about dosages are also given, as well as warnings when the substances have been shown to have negative side effects. He presents no axe to grind, does not attack anyone, but only presents the results of medical research into herbs in a clearly accessible format. The book has plenty of references for additional reading, and I found it to be excellent.

5 out of 5 stars The Best no-nonsense book on Herbals.......1996-06-06

So much bullshit about the use and effectiveness of herbal remedies exists that it's wonder how any sane person can use herbs as self-medication. This is probably the only book that offers a researched summary on the scientific studies into herbs and their effects. Well referenced, easy to read (even to a layman like myself) and debunks so many myths that most herb fans will be surprised. If you buy this, be sure to get the updated 1995

                        Book Description

The architectural masterpieces, urban planning projects, and bohemian existence that characterized the life of Australian architect Harold Desbrowe-Annear are examined in this tribute to a major proponent of the arts and crafts movement in architecture. The projects detailed in this study include the apartments and houses in Melbourne that Desbrowe-Annear designed in the Queen Anne, art deco, and arts and crafts styles; the Corporation Arch, commissioned to celebrate the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901; and the Church Street bridge in Melbourne. Both a member of the artist community and a friend to powerful members of the political establishment, Desbrowe-Annear produced works of merit that earned him awards and wide recognition in the early part of the 20th century.

                            Book Description

A fascianting account of the life and methods of Ino (1745 - 1818), pioneer surveyor of Japan. A successful brewer, he learned his art after age fifty. The accuracy of his maps of the Japanese coasts astonished Europeans and rendered detailed mapping by the British Navy unnecessary. Ito is a much prized cult figure of Japanese engineers even in these days.
