Book Description
In 1665, when an epidemic of the plague forced Cambridge University to close, Isaac Newton, then a young, undistinguished scholar, returned to his childhood home in rural England. Away from his colleagues and professors, Newton embarked on one of the greatest intellectual odysseys in the history of science: he began to formulate the law of universal gravitation, developed the calculus, and made revolutionary discoveries about the nature of light. After his return to Cambridge, Newton's genius was quickly recognized and his reputation forever established. This biography also allows us to see the personal side of Newton, whose life away from science was equally fascinating. Quarrelsome, quirky, and not above using his position to silence critics and further his own career, he was an authentic genius with all too human faults.
Customer Reviews:
Great!.......1999-08-03
I have never read a biography quite as good as this. This book has some of the best descriptions of Newton that I've ever heard: "Like Leonardo da Vinci and Benjamin Franklin, Isaac Newton was not just an aimless childhood tinkerer, but a tinkerer playing with ideas and mechanisms." It has so many interesting details about his life, such as the jumping contest at school, or the many different clocks that he made. This book made me realize that Newton wasn't just a great scientist, but a political figure as well, with a seat in Parliment, head of the Royal Society, and Director of the Mint. If it is possible, Cristianson would be my nominee for the Pulitzer Prize.
Great book for a get to know feeling with issac newton.......1999-08-01
The book, Isaac Newton and the Scientific Revoultion, was a good book beacause it went futher than the inventions and into Isaac Newton, the man. The book showed his public and private fueds with rival scientists. The books also shows his emotions; lots of resenment and hate, love of the unknown, and joy of experinicng life to the fullest. The only bad part of the book was it was to fast; it didn't show enough of the discoverery, it raced along to show what happened to Newton after the discovery like his fame and how it destroyed his rivals. But in the end you feel like you knew Newton and lived in the Scientiic revolution.
Isaac Newton and the scientific revolution is a superb book.......1999-07-31
This book gives an excellent portrayal of Isaac Newtons life and discoveries. It shows how a childhood dilemma leads to Isaacs will to succeed. It also depicts Newton`s social life with friends such as halley and John Locke. The book shows his feuds with rival inventors such as John Flamsteed. This book deserves 5 star for it depicts Newtons scientific genius inside his personal world.

The Other Diabetes:Living and Eating Well with Type 2 Diabetes.......2006-11-12
This is one of the most practical and informative books I've found. It is easy to understand and has useful menus and recipes for the busy life of most people with diabetes or pre diabetes. I do not believe you will be disappointed with this book. Give it a read, you'll be glad you did.
great book, even for the non-diabetic.......2006-03-30
My father has type II diabetes. I bought this book for him, but ended up reading it myself. I am not diabetic, but am at risk of developing it. This book is an interesting read, and has a wondeful meal plan and recipes. I have decided to start eating the way she describes, The Mediterranean way, just because it's a healthy way to live. It's just a bonus for me that it also helps prevent and control "the other diabetes". Get this book....it's fantastic!
excellent.......2004-02-05
I was diagnosed with diabetes about 2 years ago. I have read a number of books on the subject. What I like about this book is that it talks about real food. The dessert recipes are made with real sugar. They are low sugar of course, but a number of the recipes can be fed to company. The book also confirmed something I had recently noticed. If I eat less fat, I can eat more carbohydrates with less effect on my blood sugar. I believe this book would be a great place to start for the newly diagnosed, but it is also a great review book that includes a lot of the newest ideas and theories. In addition, it has the basic understanding that food is good and good food is even better.
The Only One You Need.......2003-05-01
I add my recommendation to the earlier one that you can save yourself lots of time and money by just buying this book. I recommend the hard-back version as your copy will get lots of use around the kitchen.
The explanations of the blood sugar problem and corrective methods are logical, simple and complete. The book is very well written and makes pleasant reading.
With the exception of two or three ingredients which you may have to find in a health food store, all others can be found in any grocery store.
All of the recipes thus far tried are simple and delicious.
The meal plans and recipes work without a pervasive feeling of constant hunger, which can be a problem in many other diabetic meal plans.
Following a diagnosis of pre-diabetic blood sugar level, and fortunately buying this book on a dietician's recommendation, along with half a dozen others which I rarely use, I have lost twenty pounds in the first three weeks of owning and using the book, with more coming off daily, with minimal exercise. Exercise naturally accelerates the weight loss.
A useful supplement is "No-fuss Diabetes Recipes for 1 or 2" by Boucher et al, but "The Other Diabetes" can stand alone.
The well known and documented relationship between obesity and diabetes 2 can be quickly attacked using this book.
One of the delicious breakfast recipes, Peach Almond Smoothie, will banish hunger for at least half a day, and is widely variable by substituting other frozen fruits for the peaches.
The recipes present lots of variety to accomodate different tastes.
Thank you.......2003-03-21
I have been so busy reading. Sorry I didn't rate sooner.
Customer Reviews:
great book.......2003-11-01
This is a great book for anyone looking for entertainment ideas. There are recipes for every occasion. I will be using it in many years to come since it is filled with wondeful ideas from cooking, to flower arranging. The recipes are multicultural.
Beautiful Cookbook.......2003-08-14
This Williams-Sonoma cookbook is gorgeous. It has pictures for each of the recipes, and it's just a great entertaining book. It gives helpful tips on flower arranging, napkin folding, and table setting as well. It also has a glossary of special ingredients and techniques that some of the recipes use. It's a wonderful book, even though some of the recipes are a little too gourmet for me.

Nice book, explains various techniques used in this flower arranging art.
I liked the techniques of creating decorations using more than one vaze side by side and the ways they are connected with flowers.

This book is a pleasure to read and look at even if you don't do flower arranging. The illustrations are beautiful and the writing is clear and direct. I bought multiple copies and gave them to clients for holiday presents, and it was very well received.

Customer Reviews:
Great detail!.......2003-09-06
This one is terrific! It covers woodlands, grasslands, rocklands, wetlands, container gardens. Pictures are fantastic and information is right on target. The book starts with answering the question Why? Why replace natural habitats in our gardens - talks to the web of life, has a great drawing showing the interconnectedness; talks to "weeds" versus "wildflowers" (yea, they're the same thing), and so much more. Lots of talk about the use of native plants and the benefits as well as the benefits of attracting wildlife to the garden. Throughout the sections there are full page tables of plants, wildlife etc so it breaks up the text. Love this book! I originally got it because we've been planning to put in a frog pond for awhile and there's a great section on that but its giving me lots of great understanding for othergardens and wild areas too. As one writer once stated, "If you want to see wildlife, let your garden be a wild place."
an inspiration.......2002-06-12
for someone who wanted to be a gardener but just couldn't get excited about it, this book opened my eyes. I've always been a wildlife and nature nut but for some reason could not find a way to get enthused about doing the gardening thing.
this book changed all of that. four months after reading this book, I have a yard-full of newly planted native illinois tallgrass prairie plants, two birdbaths, a pond in progress and tons of birds visiting my six birdbaths. my yard is like a whole other world.
I highly recommend this book to anyone, but most especially to people like myself who need a "reason" to garden.

Book Description
What parents do to help their children through a divorce can have a long-term effect on how children view themselves and their relationships with others. In this essential guide, therapist Darlene Weyburne shows the best way to break the news to kids, tells how to reassure children that the split is not their fault, and outlines proven strategies for dealing with issues that can disrupt children's lives.
Customer Reviews:
more than just a book for divorcing parents with children.......2000-08-07
I had the adavantage of having ms. Weyburne as my thrapist, so i had the opportunity to know about this book and was very much interested in reading her views on this subject. I was excited because it was exactly what my sister needed at this time. I first bought it for her because she was going through a divorce and was having a hard time dealing with her kids on this subject, but then i noticed in some later chapters, things that seemed to help me understand better my own divorce (though no children were involved). I bought a second copy for myself and gained valuable knowledge about divorce, with or without chilren. I recognized many situations that a person goes through during and after a divorce and was able to use that knowledge to help me get past a few walls I had built around myself. This started with the chapter on taking care of yourself and went through confronting and coping with your feelings, mourning the loss and changing negative thinking habits. Ms. Weyburne is very knowledgable on this subject and used her education and twenty years of experience to write a book that can help parents, going through divorce with children, and also adults that have or are going through a divorce with no children. I was lucky enough to know about the book because she was my therapist, so i am writing this to let others without the same opportunity, to hear about a well written and very insightful book. Thank you Darlene.
great workbook for parents to help the kids cope with divorc.......1999-04-27

Focus is on helping parents separate their relationship issues from that of their relationship with the children. Customer Reviews:
The Best Autobiography by Far! by Sammy K. 4th Grade.......2006-04-20
I am Jewish, and I learned a lot from this book. I learned about life in Warsaw, and about the time period around World War I. It shows how that time compares to this, and how much more we have now than back then. Lots of people take electric lights for granted. This book shows what it was like to live through freezing weather, hunger, and stress about war.
I don't exactly like autobiographies, but this one really, really hit the spot!
The childhood of a master story- teller .......2005-01-12
Singer just has it. These vignettes of his childhood do not have the emotional power of his greatest stories but they are rich with life, insight and humor. And somehow he tells stories even when he is making simple descriptions of his early life. This work too tells the pain and poverty of his childhood and the difficulty of his parents' lives. It is too a tribute to a world - gone .
I read this for a 6th grade book report and loved it!.......2004-09-14
This book is a very good read for anyone and everyone that likes to read about foreign culture-- or even if you don't! I usually detest biographies and book reports, but reading this book made it FUN!
Grandfather telling stories..........2000-05-09
To enjoy listening to stories told by grandfather, you don't necessarily have to be a child! As a matter of fact, it is a life virtue to enjoy these stories told by Isaac Bashevis Singer, regardless of age. They are set in the now vanished Hassidic community of pre-II World War, but their moral content transcends time and space, and although they are soaked in Jewishness they equally appeal to the open-minded reader. Beware that out of the seventeen tales in this editon, 14 are included in "My Father's Court," by the same author.
Customer Reviews:
A masterpiece that will make the reader love life more .......2006-11-26
This is one of the most beautiful autobiographical works I have ever read. Singer tells of his Polish childhood in such a simple and yet moving yet. This book is an example of what a great writer can do even using a simple straightforward narrative - technique and quite uncomplicated language. The opening story tells of a child filled with wonder and question, whose curiosity knows no rest. It sets the tone for the whole book. The tone is a kind of wonder at and hunger for life. There is innocence, curiosity and a deep feeling for people and for the world.
One of the most moving chapters is the one on Asher the Milkman, a simple pious man who saved the Singer family when their house was on fire, and they were asleep. This Asher is described in a such a loving way, a strong person, a modest person, a learned person and one not without sorrows and family tragedies.
This is Singer's concluding paragraph of this story.
"After we left Warsaw(during the First World War), we continued to her news of him from time to time. One son died, a daughter fell in love with ayoung man of low origins and Asher was deeply grieved. I do not know whether he lived to see the Nazi occupation of Warsaw. he probably died before that. But such Jews as he were dragged off to the death camps. May these memoirs serve as a monument to him and his like , who lived in sanctity and died as martyrs."
Singer tells of his love of storytelling, and in doing so he also tells of the friends of his childhood who shared this passion with him. One Shosha is the subject of the last story in the collection which tells of his making a visit to his old neighborhood in Krochmalna Street and meeting there a seeming duplicate of the Shosha he knew. It is her daughter.
Singer also tells a great deal about his childhood , the conflict between his demon- dreaming father and his rational mother the daughter of the Rebbe of Bilgoray. He tells of his older brother Israel Joshua Singer who essentially inspired and encouraged his own writing. He tells of his being filled with questions and his meeting with the work of Spinoza which seemed to answer so many questions at the time.
This review cannot begin to do justice to this work. It does not give its real feeling.
This is a book which makes the reader love life more and want to live more. The spirit of Singer and of the child whose story he tells is of a person so hungry for life, so appreciative of what he sees and knows of the world. It is a work created in a tone of wonder.
What a masterpiece.
