        Book Description

Grand Eccentrics is a group biography of a half dozen inventors, entrepreneurs and eccentrics—Orville and Wilbur Wright, Charles Kettering, John H. Patterson, Arthur Morgan, and James Cox—who explored those new possibilities. They did much to create the American 20th century that is now yielding to the rise of the electronic technologies and a global marketplace.

4 out of 5 stars Men who Made a Difference.......2003-11-20

Orville Wright, Wilbur Wright, James Cox, John Patterson, James Ritty, and other men have brought many great inventions and insight into the world of business, politics, and science. These guys are known mostly for their contributions to human progress but they also have one more thing in common: they all grew up and/or lived in the city of Dayton, Ohio, when they achieved greatness. Author Mike Bernstein wrote this book in 1996 to commemorate the bicentennial of the city of Dayton and to celebrate the many native men who helped change the world.

Much of this book is spent talking about John Patterson, the former head of NCR (known as National Cash Register in those days), and his business practices and personal conduct that thrust him into the national spotlight. The Wright Brothers also get extensive coverage in this book, with Bernstein talking about not only the invention of powered flight, but also the personalities that made the Wright Brothers unique. You complete your reading feeling like you know about them as people and not just as two guys who were good mechanics.

Bernstein includes many black and white photos throughout the book, showing some of the factories, the people, and the inventions that put Dayton, Ohio, on the national map. He doesn't include any color photos. He gives the book an historic feel by including photos exactly as they were taken in the early part of the twentieth century.

Dayton, Ohio is still known by many as the birthplace of aviation. But it was also a hotbed of other activities and inventions. Author Mike Bernstein explains these complex men and the ambition and drive that propelled each of them to national prominence. These men were all unique and important to the progress of mankind. But most of all, they were "grand eccentrics"- men who were out of the ordinary and who didn't allow conventional thinking to stand in the way of innovation. This book describes them well, showing how the combination of determination and zeal led these inventors to accomplish so many great things.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Review of Turn of the Century American Ingenuity.......2000-01-24

Mr. Bernstein does a great job bringing to life the interactions among the Wright Brothers, Boss Kettering, and John Patterson in turn of the century Dayton, Ohio. Did you know John Patterson (founder of National Cash Register)invented the canned sales pitch and direct mail marketing? And the way the book covers the five year period it took the Wright Brothers to concur flight is spellbinding. I have purchased five copies of this book to give to various friends, all of whom loved it.

Hot Point Fitness author Steve Zim is a personal trainer/gym owner who has "a small army" of personal trainers that uses his method. Zim personally trains mostly celebrities and professional athletes, especially Olympic figure skaters and professional baseball players. His clients aim for optimal physical appearance as well as physical performance. Their sports depend on strength, agility, flexibility, and speed. According to Zim, you can achieve your own best personal fitness level by using the Hot Point Fitness program. The goal: to transform your body into the best shape ever.

The main difference between Hot Point Fitness and most fitness books is intensity and structure. Zim leads you through each workout, much like your own personal trainer would. "Hot Point Weight Training is designed to work each muscle to 100 percent of its capacity, and consequently completely transform the way the muscles in your body look," writes Zim. "The point of Hot Point Nutrition is to speed the metabolism and make it burn calories at a white-hot pace. Hot Point Aerobics will super-heat your muscles, and burn fat from your body quickly, safely, and forever," he says.

Zim's program is precisely structured and divided into three 28-day phases. During phase 1, you become a regular exerciser by spending one hour at the gym, three days per week. Phase 2 keeps you in the gym for 90 minutes, four days per week, and gets you to the point of "needing" to exercise. Phase 3--up to two hours a day at the gym, five days per week--brings you to an athlete's level of fitness (strength, flexibility, and endurance).

Zim developed his weight-training exercises by using MRI technology and infrared imaging to examine which muscles work during which exercises, and how hard. He was amazed to learn that traditional weight-training exercises only work 20 to 30 percent of the targeted muscles. He altered exercises and perfected techniques to build muscle density (not necessarily muscle mass), optimally by working muscles to exhaustion.

Zim describes the exercises clearly, with plenty of attention to technique. Each is illustrated by several photographs, which vary in quality (sometimes the lighting or clothing color doesn't provide enough contrast between model and background). Experienced exercisers will find almost all the exercises familiar, but will learn much from the technique recommendations that make the difference between a humdrum workout and an effective, muscle-blasting one. --Joan Price

        Book Description

A scientifically proven plan for turning traditional weight and aerobic exercises into super-exercises, helping muscles reach their "hot point" for faster and better results.

A complete plan for total body transformation, Hot Point Fitness introduces more than 100 unique super-exercises, demonstrating routines that exact 100 percent muscle output for leaner and denser muscle in a fraction of the time standard weight-training and aerobic exercises take to get results. When seen through MRI scans, muscles actually glow red hot after these incredible workouts. Focus-ing on precision in movement and on exercise variation, Hot Point Fitness presents amazing three-, four-, and five-day-a-week workouts as well as advice on the optimum foods to fuel the body, manipulate metabolism, and burn that stubborn fat.

5 out of 5 stars hot point fitness .......2004-08-15

I am sixteen years old and I have been working out on and off since I was about twelve. My sister and I decided that we wanted to hit the gym again but we wanted some "assistance". My sister went out and found this book called Hot Point Fitness. Of course I was a little sceptical and I felt that a book would not have much to offer, but I was wrong. I have been following the day to day routine religiously for about the last month or so since that day she bought it, and let me tell you there is a huge difference in both my appearance and confidence. I may have been working out for a while but I really had no idea what to do and how to do it properly. Not only does this book tell you what to do and when to do it but it gives you a detailed summary about each and every particular exerice with pictures as well. If you are an ammature or even a regular at working out and you want to see a big difference in yourself and see it fast, this is the book for you. It's simple and easy to use and it surely is a lot cheaper than a personal trainer.

5 out of 5 stars Simple but Effective.......2003-03-07

I am a Personal Trainer with a degree in Exercise Science. I saw a breif story on a entertainment news program about the book. As with most new fads/techniques, I performed my own little study on its efficacy. It was great. I saw visual, as well as, measured (increased strength, decreased body fat ...)improvements. It describes exactly what to do during each exercise to get maximal results.
I even sent it to my sister in another state to use to as she prepares herself to look great on her appraoching wedding day. I wish I could train her myself but this is the next best thing.
If you can't hire a trainer, I recommend you buy the book, read it cover to cover, then do it! It is simple and effective.

        2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2002-12-02

I was looking forward to this book after reading wonderful reviews. I have a master's degree in exercise physiology and own a personal traing business as well as manage a health club with over a dozen personal trainers. I am always looking for fresh approaches to exercise programming. The theory behind this book (MRI imaging to find exercise techniques that fully target the muscles) is very interesting. Unfortunately the author is not a writer, and apparently had a poor choicee for an editor. There are many typos and poor writing that detract from the book. The nutrition guidelines give okay percentages, but when you do the calculation it leaves you very short on calories based on energy expenditure (and part of the calculation is written backwards!). The most amazing mistake (in addition to misinformation about metabolism and energy) is the repeated reference to ENDOMORPHINS!!!! Come on--how can that have even made it to print??? An Endomorph is a particular body type---ENDORPHINS give you the 'runner's high'. ANY experienceed personal trainer should know that. So, sorry Mr. Zim...I had high hopes but can't get past all the errors.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Fitness Plan - not all-encompassing, though.......2002-07-06

I've been lifting weights and doing some cardio work on and off for more than 20 years. Boy that makes me feel old at 34! I would go into the gym and thought with my vast "knowledge" I could just wing it. I wasn't a mess, but I really hadn't progressed in a long time. Same old, same old. Reasonably strong, but not getting stronger, and about 30lbs overweight.

I read this book about the same time I read Howard Shapiro's Picture Perfect weight loss, which is a fantastic, common-sense approach to eating better (not dieting). I started out exercising according to Hotpoint Phase 2, and following the principles in Picture Perfect weight loss. In just under 3 months, I've reduced my body fat from 33+% to about 21% (I know, I still need to lose more, but I will). Hotpoint fitness provided the motivation and structured weightlifting plan that has really made a difference.

If you are looking for a book to teach you EVERYTHING about fitness, this alone won't cut it. He really doesn't talk about the specifics of cardio, he just says: get your heart rate in this zone, for this length of time. That was fine with me, but others might like more detail. I just went and bought a [price] heart rate monitor (chest strap and watch) from [a local retailer], and I can walk fast, run, bike, almost anything to stay in the zone for the prescribed lenght of time.

I didn't pay much attention to his nutrition either. It seemed like sound advice, but I was/am following the Picture Perfect plan for my eating. They seem to follow the same principals, Hotpoint is just more structured.

For a "get-in-shape" motivational book, with some great innovative exercises and levels for everybody, I've not seen a better workout book.

                                  Book Description

A fellow Jew within the Warsaw Ghetto, offended by Zosia Goldberg's unaccented Polish, spat at her in Yiddish: "May you die amongst the goyem!" Zosia took this "curse" as a message from God. It sparked her escape from the Ghetto, convincing her that only by posing as a Gentile could she survive.

And Zosia did not die amongst the goyem-but nearly. She was a "debrouillarde": she ran through fire without getting burned. Her story features resistance at every turn, narrow escapes, and help from the most unlikely sources. At times suffering bitter betrayals by fellow Jews, she also encountered unexpected sympathies from some Nazis themselves. Zosia's story is as much a chronicle of the Holocaust as it is everywoman's struggle against human folly and depravity.

"Running Through Fire is a book filled with unspeakable horrors-but it is told without a shred of self-pity. Zosia Goldberg never complains, never bemoans her lot. She battles and endures, and in this raw, unvarnished tale of human suffering, she has given us a manual of hope."-from the introduction by Paul Auster

After surviving WW II, Zosia Goldberg came to the United States, married, then moved to Caracas, Venezuela, to operate a garment business. She returned to America after her husband's death and currently resides in Florida. She has one son.

Hilton Obenzinger (Preface) is a poet, novelist, and critic, and a recipient of the American Book Award. He teaches American literature and honors writing at Stanford University.

Paul Auster's (Introduction) work has been translated into 30 languages. Following the Book of Illusions, which was a national bestseller, his newest novel, Oracle Night, will be published in December 2003. He is also the author of three screenplays (including Smoke) and the editor of the NPR National Story Project anthology. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.

4 out of 5 stars The Prewar and Holocaust Experiences of an Assimilated Polish Jew.......2007-03-28

Zosia Goldberg traces her experiences in prewar Poland, war-torn Poland, and then wartime Germany (as a mislabeled forced Polish laborer).

Goldberg tacitly attests to the fact that the prewar sympathy of Polish Jews towards Communism (the Zydokomuna) was widespread: "When I was going to school, I had feelings for communism, like all the young ones." (p. 7). She also frequently mentions her Communist-involved relatives (p. 8, 16, 29-30, 33). She absurdly refers to all prewar Polish political parties, excepting Pilsudski's, as Nazi parties (p. 7).

In her ON THE EDGE OF DESTRUCTION, Celia Heller would have us believe that prewar assimilated Polish Jews suffered just as much from anti-Semitism as did the much more numerous non-assimilated Polish Jews. In contrast, Goldberg writes: "I did not suffer much, but the Jews in Poland did. Especially if you had a Jewish accent and could not speak Polish, people would always say hurtful things, like: `Dirty Jew.' With my dark eyes and hair, I never heard that I was a Jew. They called me a Gypsy instead--admiringly!" (p. 9). (Of course, this was generally true elsewhere. The relative infrequency of anti-Semitism in the west, compared to that in eastern Europe, owed less to the virtue of tolerance presumably possessed by westerners and more to the assimilated state of western Jewry).

Goldberg herself experienced hatred of exceptional virulence not from Poles but from her unassimilated fellow Polish Jews. She comments: "There was a Jew with a big beard who I had never seen before, and I went over to him and asked, `What's happening? Could you tell me?' I could not speak Yiddish, so I spoke Polish to him. I think he understood me, but he got very angry that I did not speak Yiddish, so he spat on me, `Du solst starben zwischem goyim!'...'May you die amongst the goyim!'" (p. 39).

The author provides a telling commentary on German conduct during the German-Soviet conquest of Poland in 1939: "It was a tremendous job to get to Warsaw because German planes were shooting everyone on the road. Everybody was running, and the Germans were shooting the refugees...They bombed the national shrines." (p. 12).

In referring to Poles and Jews under the German occupation, Goldberg writes: "Everybody stole at the time..." (p. 20). This corrects Jan Tomasz Gross (FEAR) and his tacit mischaracterization of thievery as something in which Poles were the sole perpetrators and Jews the sole victims.

From the earliest days of the German occupation, Goldberg had to contend with Jewish collaborators, including the Jewish Gestapo (pp. 23-24, 44), and Jewish informers who betrayed other Jews (p. 48, 133-134). She describes one roundup of Jews: "Along with the German Nazis, there were Ukrainians, Lithuanians, Latvians, and Jewish police." (p. 34).

Throughout her book, Goldberg makes a sage distinction between ethnic Poles on one hand, and the Volksdeutsche on the other. For example, her experience with the Polish Blue Police (Policja Granatowa) was a positive one: "So the police came, a plainclothes Volksdeutscher. The real Polish police would never come. The Germans would not trust them because the real Polish police would do anything possible against the Germans." (p. 62).

While in the Warsaw Ghetto itself, Goldberg observed the arrival of some German Jews, and commented on their behavior: "One day these German Jews were marching off to work past the SS men on guard. These German Jews were raising their hands, hollering, `Heil Hitler!' and the SS men did not even answer them, did not look at them, did not even spit at them." (p. 24).

For all the talk about Poles and Jews being "unequal victims", it becomes obvious that Germans didn't see the Poles as having any more inherent right to live than the Jews. When in Germany for forced labor, Zosia Goldberg, concealing her Jewishness and saying that she was a Pole, went to a German doctor to treat her hepatitis. His reaction was revealing: "'You are from there?' he said. `All these Jews, these Poles and Jews, they should die. They should all be killed. I don't know why we are using them for workers.' `You are very sick', he then said. `You think I will give you medicine? You are very much mistaken. We need medicine for our soldiers, for our Germans. For foreigners--for Poles and Jews--nothing! The Poles, the Russians, and the Jews--nothing!'" (pp. 113-114).

While a forced laborer at Erfurt, her fellow Polish forced laborers kept her Jewishness a secret and helped her (p. 147). Earlier, while seriously ill, Goldberg had been helped in Germany by a Polish woman who blamed the Jews for systematically cheating Poles (pp. 115-116). This adds to the numerous other accounts of ostensibly anti-Semitic Poles helping Jews.

Goldberg inadvertently touched on the Pilsudski-Dmowski factionalism as to who was Poland's worst enemy: "Pilsudski had made believe that he was with the Germans against the Russians because he wanted the independence of Poland. He did not like the Germans. As a matter of fact, he hated them all. He only wanted Poland to be independent." (p. 119).

Goldberg alludes to the anti-Christian character of Nazism: "While I was in prison, I always prayed regular Catholic prayers, not because I wanted to pray, but because it was forbidden. Prayers were not allowed. It was against Hitler." (p. 110).

Goldberg repeatedly found that older Germans were less likely to practice Nazi anti-Semitic polices than younger ones (p. 50, 67, 95, 99, 121). But one of them opined that she could return to Warsaw, which would in future be part of Germany (p. 67). Although Goldberg doesn't develop this further, her experiences show once again that, while virulent German anti-Semitism is a relatively recent development, German Polonophobia is of ancient vintage.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome and highly recommended.......2004-08-09

The latest addition to the Mercury House "NEA Heritage & Preservation" series, Running Through Fire: How I Survived The Holocaust by Zosia Goldberg is a welcome and highly recommended contribution to the growing library of Holocaust literature, memoirs, and biographies. Zosia Goldberg was a Polish Jew living within the warsaw Ghetto when she was rejected by a fellow Jew who cursed her in Yiddish and spat upon her to die among the "goyim" (non-jews). Taken that incident as a sign from God, Zosia escaped from the Ghetto and posed as a Gentile in order to survive the Nazi Holocaust that led to the almost complete extermination of the Warsaw Ghetto Jewish community. Running Through Fire is a gripping story of narrow escapes, help from unlikely sources, bitter betrayals by fellow Jews, and a dramatic struggle against human folly on the one hand and human depravity on the other. After surviving World War II and the Holocaust, Zosia came to America, married, and then moved to Caracas, Venezuela and worked in the garment business. Returning to America after her husband's death, she now lives in Florida where she was materially assisted by poet, novelist and critic in recording her life experiences for the benefit of future generations.
