Great story about the sometimes forgotten.......2003-10-31
"Army Wives" is a very interesting story about a woman who lived the kind of life many did during the WWII and postwar era in America. She and those like her are a big reason we have our freedom today, just as much as the soldiers in combat. They stayed strong for their husbands, and strong for themselves.
Book Description
Albert Einstein expanded the way we understand our universe and helped create a framework for modern physics with his groundbreaking theory of relativity. In this detailed and well-balanced biography, illustrated with exceptional archival photographs, John B. Severance recounts Einstein's life from his privileged childhood and disappointing early career to his later recognition as one of the most respected and beloved scientists of this century. The author identifies Einstein's complex theories and makes clear why his ideas are still the basis of work by today's top physicists. He also reveals many of Einstein's inner complexities and eccentricities, exploring the personal and public controversies that followed him throughout his life. What emerges is a picture of a brilliant, compassionate, yet imperfect man whose remarkable theories gave the world an enormous push into the future.

Einstein:Visionary Scientist.......2002-06-07
I chose this book because one day I had nothing to do so I went to the library and saw this book. The book was about Albert Einstein. I thought about some things about him, but didn't really find something important about him so that made me want to read this book. I wanted to know how his life was and how did he become so smart. I learned many new things in the book about Albert Einstein. The book was really easy to understand and had some pictures of him doing things.
I recommend this book to anybody who wants to learn more about Albert Einstein. There are many surprising things in this book. One thing was that when Albert was taking his first violin lessons he flung a chair at his teacher. His parents quickly hired another teacher. When Albert was little his parents complained that he was too heavy and also that his head was too large and square shaped. They worried that their son was going to become retarded, but they were wrong. At the age of twelve Albert was really interested in math so he asked a medical student named Max Tameley to lend him some books on math. By the age of thirteen Albert was already past the level of Tameley's.
My favorite part of the story was when Albert Einstein was about at the age of six and taking his first violin lesson. He got mad and all of a sudden through a chair at the chair. I never knew that Albert had a really bad temper when he was a little kid. I always thought that he was a nice little young boy who liked to study and work. The book also says that whenever his sister, Maja, saw that Albert's face was pale she would run away and find cover because she knew that he would throw things. Once Albert almost hit her with a bowling ball and once he did hit her with the handle bar of a hose.
a good book.......2001-04-11
john severance is a good nonfiction writer besides this book he has wroght books like gandhi:great soul, artist and thomas jeforson. Most people in the world know the name albert einstein and the famous E=MC2, but the theory of relativity and his life in general is on known of but with this book will help you under stand it a bit better, did you know he won the nobel prize well he did for physics.

Book Description
The Chinese secret for youthfulness, health and long life lies at least partly in T'ai Chi, the ballet-like calisthenics they've practiced for centuries. This rhythmical art stresses slow breathing, balanced and relaxed postures and absolute calmness of mind. The practice itself need take no more than ten minutes a day. This book is a complete step-by-step manual for the beginner that will enable anyone to master the sequence of thirty-seven postures that make up the T'ai Chi solo exercise.

Not very helpful.......2007-07-25
As a student at Cheng-Man-ch'ing's school, starting the year before his death, I've never found this book particularly representative of Professor Cheng, though many people are fond of it. There are several other books that are much more helpful, including Professor's own "Master Cheng's New Method of Taichi Ch'uan Self-Cultivation" and "Cheng Tzu's Thirteen Treatises on T'ai Chi Ch'uan." In response to one other comment, I was never under the impression that he held anything back. Like any other good teacher, he was aware of what his students were prepared to absorb, and imparted information accordingly. Remember that he departed this world in 1975, a time when T'ai Chi was still relatively unknown in the West, and much of what he said and wrote went right over the heads of most of his students at that time. The thing that most of us tried to do was emulate his example of what could be attained through dedication, perseverance, and a joyful attitude.
For Advanced Students.......2007-04-10
The advanced T'ai Chi will be able to perfect their forms with this guide. The pictures display perfect models of the forms for students to strive toward.
A Good Companion.......2007-01-12
I chose this particular book based on the reviews I read on Amazon.com because having just started Tai Chi classes, I was eager to learn more. However, this is by no means a simple "teach yourself" book. While well written, I find the explanations of the positions difficult to follow, like reading the instructions on a pinball machine. Once the position has been taught in class, it all makes sense, but to try to do it alone is more than I can handle. I would therefor recommend this book to the serious student of Tai Chi whose aim is to perfect the form rather than a beginner's book.
Nice for the pictures, but otherwise not clear.......2005-12-02
Cheng Man-Ch'ing is a cult figure in taiji, with a fiercely loyal group of followers. Certainly he was a master, and this book provides excellent photos of him doing the form. But taiji is all about movement and feeling, and still photos can't convey the quality of movement or hint at the internal mechanics of the art. So if you want to use the book to learn the form, forget it. If you have a good teacher, and want the book as a source of inspiration, by all means, buy it. If you're a Cheng Man-Ching fan, keep in mind that he talked and wrote about taiji, but much of his power was derived from nei gong, including the small and great heavenly circulations, that he kept a closely held secret, for reasons that remain unclear. Temper what he says with the understanding that he held back as much as he offered, and you won't be frustrated by doing the form over and over without getting anywhere near the benefits Cheng derived. Bottom line is that the book is an artifact and a good one, and it was one of the first books in English on taiji. As a learning tool, it is limited.
Classic work.......2005-11-11
This might have been the first work in English on tai chi, and Smith was Cheng Man Ching's first western or American student. It's still one of the best introductory tai chi books out there. The photos of Cheng's form are worth the price of the book by themselves, his form being impeccable as usual and a high benchmark we should all strive to attain.
One caution, which is that the photos of Cheng are from two other previous books and some are reversed from what they are in the actual form; for example, single whip is shown on the left side when it is actually done on the right side. You can tell they're from different books since some photos show Cheng in a white jacket, and others show him in a dark jacket.
Smith includes the best brief, several-page summary of tai chi history and its origins I've seen, giving you essential details and facts without getting into an overly meticulous recounting of its origins, the lineage, and other controversial issues, which are still unresolved, anyway. But if you become more of an advanced student you'll want to learn all about that later. For an introductory text this is enough information for now.
A nice chapter on the martial arts applications is also included, something neglected too often in present day tai chi texts. Also, some good information and instruction on pushing hands techniques. By the way, pushing hands was a skill added to tai chi much later, it being originally a dim mak or point striking art, which most practitioners aren't aware of.
One minor quip. The pictures for the photo sequences of Cheng's form are a little small and sometimes a bit dark by present reproduction standards, but one has to remember these plates are now almost 40 years old. However, they're still good enough so you can see the postures and techniques okay. Overall still a fine book and at this point a true classic and landmark in the history of martial arts books about the more obscure Chinese arts. Smith's books on hsing i and ba gua were also important early efforts and excellent books also, and if you are interested in further information on the two other Wu Dang internal arts those are working getting too.

Even hard-core New York foodies know that San Francisco is the epicenter of food trends. New York may grow trends, but they are born in the City by the Bay. In San Francisco, food is more than just fuel, it's a lifestyle. With the top wines in the nation produced less than an hour away, the country's best produce grown at its doorstep, the myriad cultural influences from around the globe, and the abundance of artisan producers of bread, cheese, and other culinary delights, it's no wonder that Bay Area diners and home cooks are so food savvy. Their home is truly a culinary mecca.
This passion for good food means that readers of the city's preeminent daily newspaper, The San Francisco Chronicle, are destined to demand an equally savvy and intriguing food section that celebrates the abundance and diversity of its home town. Sure enough, the Chronicle food section is known for its fresh, inventive recipes.
The San Francisco Chronicle Cookbook, Vol. 2, edited by Chronicle food section editors Michael Bauer and Fran Irwin, collects 375 of the best recipes from world-renowned chefs and food writers including Paul Bertolli, Marion Cunningham, Mark Franz, Marlena Spieler, Flo Baker, and many others. Just a quick glance through this fat volume--the much-awaited sequel to the popular volume one--gives readers a sense of the sheer diversity of the recipes included. Appetizers range from a traditional French Provencal appetizer of Creamy Brandade of Salt Cod and Potatoes with Garlic Croutons to Shrimp Crostini with Thai Basil and Kaffir Lime Leaf to Libyan Spicy Pumpkin Dip; entrees from the meatless Malaysian Curry of Autumn Vegetables to Pan-Grilled Steaks with Toasted Walnuts and Roquefort-Shallot Butter to Grilled Tequila Chipotle Shrimp. Dessert offerings are equally enticing: creamy, sweet Butterscotch Pot de Crème, Mary Risley's Fresh Fig and Plum Tart, and a tender, moist and nutty Oatmeal Cake with Walnut Topping, to name just a few.
With chapters devoted to soups, salads, morning repasts, and relishes, sauces and chutneys, along with all the standard chapters you'd expect, this book covers the entire range of home cooking--from quick weeknight meals to lavish party spreads. It will surely prove to be a boon to busy cooks, as well as those who are ready to challenge themselves with new techniques and explore the diverse range of ingredients available today. --Robin Donovan

Busy cooks can save time using hundreds of creative tips designed to get the most flavor with the least effort. Reflecting the cultural diversity and fresh local ingredients that define Northern California, it's no wonder that even New York City looks to the West Coast and the San Francisco Chronicle food section to discover exciting, new culinary trends.

Long timer loves it -.......2006-09-09
I've lived in SF since 1970 and I love these cookbooks - I rarely read the paper on Wednesday, but I know the recipes are great, and these books are the best way to collect the best of the best from the local paper!
capturing the many flavors of the city.......2002-01-17
San Francisco has a very unique food and restaurant landscape with more ethinc cuisines on offer than in any other city in the US. This is reflected very well in this outstanding volume that brings together another great selection of eclectic dishes from local restaurants and coinisseurs. This is quite a big book and it is bursting with good stuff. It is also what I call a "no fluff" cookbook that really only has recipe after recipe, with no glossy pictures and other decor.
The recipes are well-written, easy to follow and also organized extremely well. This is a detail that I look for a lot, since you want to be able to pull a cookbook out and get right to the section of dishes that might interest you for a particular type of menu. Many of the more glamorous cookbooks are meant for browsing rather than serious searching, this is not.
If you are a beginner cook who needs visuals with every meal, this book is not for you. Basic cooking skills and a basic recipe skills are a must.
Using Fresh Ingredients.......2001-07-10
This book gives simple but good recipes for using the local vegetables and fruits that are available at the local farmer's market. I have clipped many of the recipes from past FOOD sections of the newspaper and now I have them all in one easy to find place. I like to cook new recipes and enjoy ones with lots of flavor and I find that in this book.

Guide to the Mammals of Pennsylvania.......2007-05-29
An excellent field manual that elaborates on all the mammals of Pennsylvania from the common Eastern Cottontail to the elusive Martin and Fisher. Information includes animal description and photo, reproduction, interesting facts, adaptations, food, habitat, prey, predators, biology, reasons why the mammal is endangered or threatened, and behavior. Each description is in easy to understand language except for certain biological vocabulary. This is a must-have for hunters, Boy Scouts, students, environmentalists, and any interested resident of Pennsylvania. It is especially helpful to teachers of students of wildlife including those training Envirothon students.
Very Informative!!.......2000-09-26
Merrit's Guide is a very usuful book for those interested in mammals within the state of Pennsylvania. This book is easy to follow. The descriptions are straight foward and easy to understand. The diagrams and pictures are also very useful. I highly recommend this book.
Book Description

Fabulous Book.......2007-09-01
This is a great book. Instructions are easy to follow and the quilts are just beautiful. I made the bunny rabbit quilt for a baby shower and the woman wouldn't let her baby use it for the first 6 months. She said she didn't want to ruin it. Just a great selection of patterns.
Quilting Book.......2007-08-28
I am very pleased with both the book and the timely delivery. I had looked for this book in quilting stores for some time and am pleased to have found it at Amazon.
Rotary Cutter Quilts.......2005-09-12
This book is well illustrated with great projects. Any quilter would love this book.
Disappointed.......2004-12-21
I've been quilting for a number of years and bought this book because I thought the patterns looked cute. I'm currently working on my first project from this book, the Santa Claus Tree Skirt. I have found the directions to be difficult, and a large amount of fabric is wasted because of the way you are instructed to make your blocks. I would much rather have been given actual dimensions and then just cut from there instead of making larger blocks, sewing them together, and then cutting half of them off and tossing the fabric. Fabric isn't cheap, and a good portion of it is going in the garbage with this project. I don't plan on making another project from this book.
An Excellent Book.......2004-05-14
Before I bought this book, I had always made my quilts in the traditional way. This book was an excellent introduction to the rotary cutting method, and I was able to make quilts from this book with complete success.
The directions are very clear and profusely illustrated. As long as you are accurate at measuring and cutting, you should find this book easy to work with, even if you are a complete beginner.
The designs are varied, ranging from the very cute to more sophisticated designs to traditional styles. There are designs intended for tablecloths and other small projects as well as bed quilts. Each is nicely photographed

Help for Parents Who Have Lost Children.......2007-04-02
This book can be of great help to parents, who are grieving over the loss of their children. At such a tragic time, this book is like a "light from Heaven". I buy copies of this book, to keep on hand - so that I can give them to people, in time of need. I think its a great comfort.
Our Children Forever.......2007-02-17
I enjoy reading all of George Anderson's books, they are marvelous and so well written. Excellent.
cold reading.......2005-04-03
I dont want to get involved inbetween the belief-systems here, but anyone who has no doubts whatsoever that he is genuine can at least challange himself....if he or she is ready...by knowing whats available. Nobody has to change their minds, but everybody can be challenged, I guess.
I personally dont wish to reveal my personal opinion on all this, but think it is allways better to remain sceptical towards ones own opinion, whatever that may be.
I recommend typing the term cold reading into a yahoo search engine. Or might as well go directly to http://www.tarotpassages.com/coldreading.htm
Or, if you would like to know what so called mentalists do....even though it seems impossible to the audience, go to www.magicproshop.com and type the therm mentalism into the search engine. Or the names Richard Osterlind and Marc Spelman.
Again, I am not sure myself whats going on, and only recently have been doing some research in the internet. But my jaw really hit the floor when I found this
http://www.ronjo.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=bkcashing&Category_Code=&Store_Code=R
and this
http://www.ronjo.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?
and so on. This I had certainly not expected.
So, know whats available, its the least u can do.
Life Saver.......2003-12-22
I lost my oldest son, Justin, in December of 1999 in a car accident. His 3 younger brothers were critically injured. I am a single mom of 7 years, and this devastated me. I became so distant and was severely suicidal. I turned to drugs and alcohol and got progressively worse over the next 2 years. When I read his book, it totally changed my life, and my surviving children's. It turns the finality of death into the promise of life. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another triumph in the George Anderson's series.......2000-07-20
I have read all of Anderson's books, and each one is wonderful. "Our Children Forever" follows the same theme as the other ones: clear, simple, to the point. They are all worth reading.

Available now on CD-ROM.......2004-09-07
The dictionary is very worth the trouble if you are studying Japanese history for any period up to the 1970s. It offers little in the way of critical analysis or commentary, but is reasonably thorough in covering all major figures and giving the essential outlines of lives and careers. For a while it was availble in digital format. This is easier to search and access than a large book, and one rarely wants to curl up with a massive dictionary of this sort in any event. Unfortunately, the CD seems no longer to be distributed.
