Book Description
In the post-quantum-mechanics era, few physicists, if any, have matched Julian Schwinger in contributions to and influence on the development of physics. A deep and provocative thinker, Schwinger left his indelible mark on all areas of theoretical physics; an eloquent lecturer and immensely successful mentor, he was gentle, intensely private, and known for being "modest about everything except his physics". This book is a collection of talks in memory of him by some of his contemporaries and his former students: A Klein, F Dyson, B DeWitt, W Kohn, D Saxon, P C Martin, K Johnson, S Deser, R Finkelstein, Y J Ng, H Feshbach, L Brown, S Glashow, K A Milton, and C N Yang. From it, one can get a glimpse of Julian Schwinger, the physicist, the teacher, and the man. Altogether, this book is a must for all physicists, physics students, and others who are interested in great legends.
Customer Reviews:
The Best On Schwinger-- But Only 2/3 of that Promised.......2003-09-22
For those interested in History of Science, Quantum Mechanics or Julian Schwinger, this is a great book-- at least from the science perspective.
This volume has essays by many of the contemporaries and students of Schwinger. In them, they talk a lot about his science, and how this has influenced various areas of physics. In that the book is quite valuable. Thus, Schwinger the Physicist.
They also talk a great deal about how great a lecturer he was, and even discuss his lecturing style-- which I found quite interesting. I even found myself making a couple of mental notes for when I lecture. Thus, Schwinger the Teacher.
However, after reading many of these essays, I still could not get a really good feel of what Schwinger the Man was like. There were several anecdotes by some of his students of the sort: "In my five years of graduate school, Schwinger invited me to his house for dinner once. The evening was spent pleasantly." Or: "One time when I went to office hours, Schwinger asked me a question, and I explained why that could not be so. He said "Oh yes! How stupid of me!" This was the only time I heard him admit he was wrong." Or: "Schwinger enjoyed history, but not music." Or: "One time, after he had bought a new car, he took me driving. Usually restrained, on this day he showed reckless abandon." (paraphrasing these)
The feeling I got after reading these essays was that either: (1) Schwinger was such a private man, that no one really got to know him very well or (2) Physicists do not have a good idea what an adequate description of a man is, other than describing his science--and that these anecdotes encompass what they feel is an adequate representation of the type of man he was.
Personally, I would have liked to hear more about Schwinger the NON-physicist. For example, how did he relate to his children? What about when his mother or father died? How about his relationship with his wife?
Who's to say, though? These are just my thoughts--- and I haven't won a Nobel Prize!
As an added bonus, there is a delightful transcript of a lecture Schwinger gave the year before he died in 1993, on George Green and physics.
This is still worth a look, if you are interested in this sort of thing.

Book Description
Why do we feel the way we feel? How do our thoughts and emotions affect our health? Are our bodies and minds distinct from each other or do they function together as parts of an interconnected system?
In her groundbreaking book Molecules of Emotion, Candace Pert -- a neuroscientist whose extraordinary career began with her 1972 discovery of the opiate receptor -- provides startling and decisive answers to these and other challenging questions that scientists and philosophers have pondered for centuries.
Her pioneering research on how the chemicals inside our bodies form a dynamic information network, linking mind and body, is not only provocative, it is revolutionary. By establishing the biomolecular basis for our emotions and explaining these new scientific developments in a clear and accessible way, Pert empowers us to understand ourselves, our feelings, and the connection between our minds and our bodies -- or bodyminds -- in ways we could never possibly have imagined before. From explaining how there is a scientific basis to popular wisdom about phenomena such as "gut feelings" to making comprehensible recent breakthroughs in cancer and AIDS research, Pert provides us with an intellectual adventure of the highest order.
The journey Pert takes us on in Molecules of Emotion is one of personal as well as scientific discovery. Woven into her lucid explanations of the science underlying her work is the remarkable story of how, faced with personal and professional obstacles, she has grown as a woman and a mother and how her personal and spiritual development has made possible her remarkable scientific career.
Molecules of Emotion is a landmark work, full of insight and wisdom and possessing that rare power to change the way we see the world and ourselves. Pert's striking conclusion that it is our emotions and their biological components that establish the crucial link between mind and body does not, however, serve to repudiate modern medicine's gains; rather, her findings complement existing techniques by offering a new scientific understanding of the power of our minds and our feelings to affect our health and well-being.

Amazing story ...........2007-09-27
I really enjoyed this book. I know other women PhD'ers so I was not put off by Dr. Pert's style of writing and confidence. My husband, on the other hand was and put it down after only a few pages. I was amazed and enthralled by her story and life. I think the book would appeal to women more than men. She was after all, at the forefront of the women's movement and what courage it must have taken to enter into the field of science research--the big boy domain! Even though the book was published in the late 1990's and much of what she discovered has been in the public domain by now--it is still a very good book to read and one of those larger than life bio's.
A Must Read for Anyone Interested in Health.......2007-08-16
I absolutely loved this book. A great book to read in conjunction with Molecules of Emotion is Feelings Buried Alive Never Die becasue Molecules of Emotion is the science behind Feelings Buried Alive Never Die. I think both books are a must read for anyone who wants more out of life and does not want to waste time being duped by the American Health Industry.
Molecules of Emotion from Lucy's Standpoing.......2007-07-30
I purchased this on the recommendation of a friend. I have always been such a skeptic about Chakra's but remain open to new ideas including this. I haven't been home enough to read the book as much as I would like to but expect that it will make good evening reading as the days grow shorter. When I have read it takes a while for the material to sink in and I find I need to ponder each concept some before moving on.
A very important book.......2007-07-24
Candace B. Pert gives a fascinating account of her research and her findings on how mind and body interact. I read this book before I read ORDINARY MIND: EXPLORING THE COMMON GROUND OF ZEN AND PSYCHOANALYSIS, by Barry Magid, and WHAT THE BLEEP DO WE KNOW, by William Arntz, Betsy Chasse and Mark Vicente. These latter two books throw more light on the chemistry behind what goes on inside our minds and bodies. All of these books provide helpful tools in understanding ourselves and others.
Molecules of Emotion Review.......2007-05-17
The title of this book may lead one to believe that it is a text book. However, although it does contain science that is easily understood by the non-scientist, it is autobiographical. Candace Pert tells of her journey in the world of male-dominated science. I would recommend it for any young woman starting out in science.
Customer Reviews:
Nasty!.......2005-12-31
I tried maybe 10 recipes in this book, and they were all horrible. On a positive note, I can say that the recipes make huge portions on extremely little money, so this would be a great depression cookbook. The very worst were the sauces, with "Sauerbraten Sauce" taking the cake for the most disgusting. A hot dog, mac & cheese, and jello is a cheap meal too, and tastes a whole lot better than anything in this book. Also, even though these recipes are low fat, they are not low calorie as they are loaded with sugar (for example, "Kix" bar cookies (Kix cereal and TONS of white Karo...not something that would work for your average dieter). I had this book for 1 month and threw it away.
Dumb Idea.......2003-04-12
OK Lets make food with the lowest possible ingrediants. Interesting for a game to pass the time; absolutly stupid for cooking. Usable only for 'challenged' cooks.
the quick stir chocolate cake is always a hit and no eggs!.......1999-08-31
I love the simplicity of this book and I always have the ingredients on hand.
Great taste, low calorie, easy preparation.......1999-03-05
Have tried quite a few recipes and no disappointments. Always a pleasant surprise with so few ingredients and so few calories. Highly recommended for working people with little time and gourmet taste who are trying to eat healthy.

Great Information.......2007-06-27
After looking through this book for only a few minutes, I'd located several recipes I wanted to try. I will be preparing the lemon balm punch for an Herb Society event next weekend and look forward to serving many more of the recipes this summer and winter. The size and format of this book (small) make it easy to keep handy in the kitchen.
Book Description
Over 64,000 people in the US are living in limbo, awaiting an organ transplant. The good news about organ transplants is that they are becoming fairly routine surgical procedures. The even better news is that they do work miracles. People who have been in ill health for years often describe a feeling of being reborn after a transplant. However, those families who have been told that a loved one needs a transplant to live are thrust into a strange land. Patients and families worry that no organ will be available to them. They may fear the surgery or what living with someone else's organ will feel like. They may have only a foggy idea of what staying with an immunosuppressive therapy regime after the operation will entail. Organ Transplants: Making the Most of Your Gift of Life describes:
- Deciding whether to have a transplant and choosing a transplant team
- The importance of the screening interview
- What factors go into determining a match, and what to do while waiting
- Detailed information on heart and lung, liver, kidney and pancreas, and other transplants
- Anti-rejection drugs and living with a transplant
- Emotional responses and support
- Specific situations such as living donors, transplants in children, meeting the donor family, etc.
Robert Finn, medical and scientific journalist and author, has interviewed dozens of patients, family members, medical caregivers, and transplant activists to present your family with the latest facts about transplantation--as well as the stories behind those facts.
Customer Reviews:
Still Valuable Information.......2006-05-10
This book was the only one of its kind for a long time. In fact, I found it years after my father's liver transplant, and found it helpful even "after the fact."
With new information coming out daily, and treatments progressing so rapidly, I continue to keep an eye out for more books on the subject of organ donation and transplantation. I'm interested in the most up-to-date information AND interviews with all types of recipients. I want to know how other people (besides the recipient) feel during and after the process.
Mr. Finn's book is outstanding, and reports from a PATIENT'S point of view. An excellent accompaniment that I suggest for FAMILY members of a transplant recipient is "ORGAN TRANSPLANTS: A Suvival Guide for the Entire Family".
-- Tina P. Schwartz, YA Author
A True Sourcebook for Information on Transplants.......2002-05-09
There is such a scarce amount of information for families of transplant recipients. In fact, this is the only book on the subject at my local library. I found it extremely helpful and informative for many of the technical questions I had about what my father went through and would continue to endure. (He had a liver transplant 7 years ago.) I wish I had found it years ago! Thank you Robert Finn!
Bravo.......2001-01-21
As a clinical social worker that works with patients facing the possibility of organ transplantation, I picked up this book with the hope that it would be something I could recommend to patients. It did not disappoint me! Very well written and comprehensive, it gives a huge amount of information in an easy to understand format. It is also a very interesting read - I had a hard time putting it down! It is a great starting point for people that are just beginning to learn about transplant. I will be strongly recommending it to all patients and families that I meet as part of the pre-transplant evaluation process.
Addresses my specific concerns well.......2000-08-21
My tissue matched up as a kidney donor for a friend who is on dialysis. I needed a reference that would answer my questions as I look down the road to my surgery as a donor. This book, while geared to recipients, addressed my concerns. There are several general chapters that most readers will want to read. Then, the book continues with chapters relating to specific concerns such as heart transplants, kidney transplants, each of the other organ transplants, relationships with the surviving family members of a donor, financial considerations, rejection of the organ, etc. The book clearly explains the system for getting on the "list" and the wait until a donor is found. It also describes the day of surgery as the recipient "gets the call" that an organ has been found. The surgery for each of the different types of organ transplants is lucidly explained. My main interest is living donors and there is a fine chapter on that topic. I found myself reading the book, nearly from cover to cover because I enjoyed educating myself on all aspects of transplants. The only chapter I skipped was one that is very specific on the medical regimen for combating rejection. However, for a potential recipient, this chapter would be of crucial interest (although of little interest to me as a donor). The information is very well organized and anyone with questions about transplants will find this book to be an indispensible reference.
A Grateful Heart Transplant Patient.......2000-04-13
I am a recent addition to the UNOS heart transplant waiting list and I have found locating information regarding organ transplantion rare. I was shown this book at my cardiac rehab facility and I am now online to order a copy for my family and I. I found this book to cover all major subjects relating to organ transplants. It is broke down in sections for easy reference. I was most impressed with the details of the surgeries for the different types of transplants and the insert of dialog from transplant receipents and medical personnel. I truly am very grateful to have read this book and I know that I will read it time and time again. This is also an opportunity for my family and friends to understand what is going to happen to me and how they can best deal with it. Thank you to Robert Finn for a job well done.

Book Description
Mary Pratt told a Maclean's reporter that only concrete, real images are truly worth painting. Perhaps this is one reason why she has become an icon of mainstream contemporary art, with paintings reproduced in magazines such as Saturday Night, Chatelaine, Arts Atlantic and Canadian Art, and featured on billboards, in cookbooks, and on the covers of books and magazines. The Art of Mary Pratt: The Substance of Light is stunningly beautiful, informative, and a joy to read. Tom Smart relates Pratt's work to her life, tracing the history of her painting from her Fredericton childhood through her training at Mount Allison University, her marriage to Christopher Pratt, and the setbacks and breakthroughs of her career. Pratt cooperated enthusiastically in this venture, even allowing Smart to quote from her journals. The Art of Mary Pratt contains over 70 colour reproductions. These cover the full range of Pratt's works: from early impressionistic pieces to the eviscerated chickens and fish of the 1970s; and from figure studies of Donna, to sensuous paintings of fruit, to her latest watercolour and pastel interpretations of fire, blown snow, and waves crashing over a ship's deck.

Read "Wake Up America" we need a strong military again........1998-11-26
America defense forces has become weak. We cannot put our troups in Iraq and Korea at the same time. We have cut our defenses back to far. There are so many potential hot spots in the Middle East and Central Asia in the next decade that we must return to strength. A must to read. Lets Wake Up America!
An incredible true story of WW-II with a lesson for today........1998-11-16
The book keeps you going and you will find that you will not lay it down. A side to WW-II I have never read before. There is a lesson in the book as to why America should wake up and keep our military strong. I never realized the extent of suffering we asked our men(boys) to suffer, fighting a ruthless enemy without supplies and equipment. The book has made me aware of how gratefull we need to be of our fighting men. A must to read. Kenneth Gatzke
