A true, detailed account of life in Japanese prison camps.......1998-03-11
This is a beautifully written account of a young man's survival of the sinking of the USS HOUSTON during WW2. After spending 17 hours in the water, he was "rescued" to begin a three and a half year imprisonment in Japanese work camps which included the infamous River Kwai bridge. It is a true account of degradation, suffering, pain and fear laced with humor and faith. I sincerely doubt if anyone can read this book and not be a little bit humbled by what our courageous young men endured for our country. GOD BLESS AMERICA; AND GOD BLESS OUR ARMED FORCES.
A son's personal review of Attention, Fool!.......1998-03-08
The author of Attention, Fool! was my father. William J. Weissinger, Jr. survived the sinking of the USS Houston CA-30 only to spend the ensuing 42 months in Japanese death camps. As I read his book it was as if I was sitting there with him, listening to him tell of his experiences as a Japanese prisoner of war. And I think to myself, "Man, this is vintage Daddy, if ever there was." I don't recall him telling me anything more than "what" happened. I think he knew that if you weren't there, you could never know how bad it really was, no matter how he described the conditions. But in his telling, I did understand that it was bad. His story is one of human survival under the most adverse conditions, and I'm sure the men who shared these experiences will be able to read much into this book than the average reader ever could.

Book Description
This is the first full-length account of the life and ideas of Mary Douglas, whom many consider to be the most influential British social anthropologist of the modern era. Richard Fardon covers Douglas' family background, education and early research before providing an analysis of two of her most important works: Purity and Danger (1966) and Natural Symbols (1970). The final section deals with Douglas' often controversial forays across disciplinary boundaries--into Old Testament studies as well as the fields of economics, religion and risk analysis in contemporary societies.
An indispensable aid to further research, Mary Douglas: An Intellectual Biography offers a significant contribution to the history of social anthropology in the second half of the twentieth century and will surely remain the definitive work on its subject for years to come.

Hurt No More
No one who works at a computer or drives a car will be surprised to learn that neck pain is on the rise. About 70 million people in the United States have had neck pain, and the incidence is increasing. Like back pain, neck pain can become a constant plague that is both mysterious and difficult to treat.
Here at last is help. In What to Do for a Pain in the Neck, one of today's leading experts on neck pain provides a broad range of treatments and preventive measures so that you do not have to learn how to live with pain -- you can banish it.
Combining his own extensive experience with the best scientific information available, Dr. Jerome Schofferman presents strategies ranging from such simple tips as rearranging your desk, workstation, and computer height to daily exercise routines to aggressive treatments requiring professional care. Among the areas he explores in depth are
- Potential causes of neck pain
- Neck-related headaches
- Whiplash (including the effects of litigation on the rate of recovery)
- What to expect from a chiropractor or physical therapist
- Over-the-counter and prescription pain medications
- Acupuncture, meditation, magnet healing, massage, and other complementary therapies
- First aid for intermittent flare-ups

Wealth of Information .......2007-09-21
I'm about 1/3 through the book and already I've learned more in this book than years of doctors' appointments, physical therapy, chiropractic, orthopedists, etc. The reason - neck pain is a very complex problem that can't be explained quickly or effectively in the course of a 5-10 minute appointment with someone who does not specialize in spinal conditions. That's where Schofferman's book comes in. It is very, very thorough and I recommend it to anyone who suffers neck pain. It addresses different diagnostic exams, different types of neck pain and what causes them, posture (with diagrams), many different treatment options, and much, much more. If you have chronic neck pain, buy this book.
Wish I bought it sooner.......2007-03-22
22 years in IT has left me with major neck pain that I really had no idea how to combat. I did PT, went to the Chiros, Acupuncturists, etc with no help. This book has given me a plan that seems to be helping, tho I'm sure I will never be pain free.
Life is a lot more complicated when you have chronic pain and you need a multifaceted plan of attack. This book gives it to you.
He explains the neck structure and where the pain can come from and what can be done in layman's terms about each situation. Try to get that out of your doctor. He goes thru exercises(really the key to minimizing neck pain if you don't need surgery), drugs, psychological issues(your brain can make you worse) and posture.
Posture sounds simple, but there are so many situations you can get into that can hurt your neck, you really need to be ever vigilant and the book tells you how to handle it.
It was all trial and error before I read this book which never works because you have good days and bad days and you think you know the causes, but you don't. This book gives a no nonsense practical approach to dealing with the situation. It is the only book you will need. And if your neck is hurting YOU NEED IT!!
So much information for less than a co-pay.......2006-04-06
I am so grateful for this book. I woke up one Sunday morning unable to stand due to severe pain in my upper back and right shoulder. I had an MRI which showed a herniated disk and bulging disks in my neck. I saw an orthopedic doctor and a neurosurgeon, neither of whom provided me with detailed information about my condition. ("You have a ruptured disk.") I got prescriptions for Motrin and physical therapy, and that was about it. When I got this book, I read almost the whole thing in one sitting. Just understanding the anatomy and physiology of my condition was comforting. I have been recovering, and I refer to this book often for information and suggestions. I highly recommend it to anyone with severe neck pain.
Excelent Book, my headaches are gone!.......2002-10-10
This book is amazing. I did regularly for a week the series of "First Aid Neck Exercises" and my neck related headaches went away. It is super simple to understand and very educational. I know a lot more about necks now. My massage therapist, who has a herniated disk in the neck, is now practicing the exercises and he has seen much improvement. If you have pain in your neck, BUY THIS BOOK.
Indispensible for anyone with neck problems.......2002-03-16
This book is a truly complete guide to explaining and treating neck problems. Written by an MD in easily understandable language, it does not stop at discussing classical remedies physicians offer for spine problems. It incorporates and validates non-classical methods such as chiropractic manipulations and acupuncture. The best part are the chapters on physical therapy: The exercises are clearly explained and can be understood and performed with or without professional help. I had serious neck pain with nerve involvment, which made it impossible for me to lie on my back without pain. Within a month of doing the exercises(on my own), I am completely pain free and back to my former activities. All of this without one doctor's visit. What a bargain!

Great Food, Great Fun.......1998-04-16
Not many things are better than spending time with an old friend, especially one who makes you laugh. This cookbook provides lots of chuckles, good recipes, and great pictures. It is almost like looking at an old photo album, recognizing the unique expressions and almost hearing the familiar voices spout the delightful quotes which are sprinkled throughout the book. It is not only a cookbook but is a book to just look through and enjoy as well. Anyone who watched the Beverly Hillbillies would enjoy reminiscing through the pages. The recipes are a nice mix of true Granny style cooking, such as Granny's Groundhog, as well as some very delicious recipes, more appetizing to city folk. The recipes are not difficult and there are some to satisfy even the hungriest Jethro in any family. The descriptions of the cast and the history of the show are fun to read. It is a wonderful mix of quotes, trivia, recipes and pictures. If you have to spend time in the kitchen, you might as well do it with Granny!

Many people at first mistake Alison Holt's embroideries for paintings or even photographs. Alison's way of working has evolved into a technique of painting with threads on to a canvas of hand-painted silk. She uses two basic stitches - straight stitch in various combinations and zigzag stitch - to make fine and broad brushstrokes on silk, blending both to achieve stunning results. The raised embroidery on the glowing coloredcolorful background produces a beautiful three-dimensional effect. This comprehensive and colourful book covers everything from composing a landscape and setting up the machine to choosing threads and silk dyes and framing up. Alison encourages the reader to experiment with the techniques as they go along, making sure the colorcolorful, length and direction of stitch are right for the effect they are trying to recreate. Step-by-step demonstrations of an autumn river bank and colourful flower border are included as are many examples of Alison's inspiring and original work.

Amazing to see such gorgeous work. I'm interested in doing this with my sewing maching and not necessarily with another expensive embroidery machine. I want to use my own thoughts and put them in fabric on my own. I'll enjoy this book greatly.
Gorgeous book.......2007-03-19
Have just received this beautiful book and it appears to be a winner. My husband even picked it up and looked through with great admiration for the artistry. Topics cover beginning to end of a project, some sections being: materials & equipment, design, colour, distance and detail, starting to stitch, grouping by technique, how to present your finished embroidery. Definitely encouraging and inspirational. I think this is one that will be sold out!
It's awesome.......2006-03-03
It is very detailed and goes way beyond beginners but it is a great starting point too
Beginner's Guide to Machine Embroidered Landscapes.......2005-10-22
I think the techniques and descriptions are good. The author is truly knowledgeable about the subject. Beautiful work. I found the flat color of the pictures somewhat distracting. If you are getting the book to read about the techniques, then it is good. I would love to see the same book updated and bolder color. I don't think the pictures do the work justice.

Book Description
See the legendary vine that dominates the Southern landscape in vivid color in this book, Kudzu in America.
It is the only book in print for the general reading public that tells the story of how kudzu came to America, about our entangled love and hate for this alien vine, and its impact upon our economy, environment and culture.
The author has thoroughly researched the subject and presents a comprehensive analysis of the serious environmental problem kudzu vine is causing in America.
She advocates solving this problem by using kudzu as a raw material for useful consumer products as they do in Japan and other Asian countries. These uses are documented with facts and photographs.
Kudzu in America is an excellent reference book, and illustrated with 150 photographs. The 8 1/2 x 11 inch format accommodates large, detailed photographs.
Book Description
This is another edition of the book as Kudzu in America, ISBN 1880308215, but in addition to the hard copy book, it comes with a complete copy of the book in vivid color on a CD. The CD can be read on any computer with Adobe Acrobat Reader. Readers can read the book on the computer screen, or from the hard copy book, and either way enjoy the 150 photographs in color as well as in black and white.

Yossi Klein Halevi, born in America and now an Israeli citizen, embarked on a spiritual quest in order to appreciate the religious dimensions of conflicts in the Middle East. Beginning in 1998, he undertook "an attempt at religious empathy" in order "to test whether faith could be a means of healing rather than intensifying the conflicts in this land." Halevi, author of the critically acclaimed Memoirs of a Jewish Extremist, chose "to pray and meditate with my Christian and Muslim fellow believers," as "a conscious refutation of the way we religious people of different faiths have always judged each other--by what we believe about God, rather than how we experience God's presence." The holy days of each religion form the structure of At the Entrance to the Garden of Eden, and Halevi's encounters with Sufi dervishes, Muslim sheiks, monks, nuns, and laypeople are entertaining, poignant, and sometimes fearsome. The stories do not separate "spirituality" from "politics"--or history, psychology, or theology. His commitment to describing an integrated experience of the many aspects of religious life helps to make the book a successful exercise in empathy, and a book of lasting literary value. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
A brilliantly observed memoir of an unprecedented and remarkable spiritual journey.
While religion has fuelled the often violent conflict plaguing the Holy Land, Yossi Klein Halevi wondered whether it could be a source of unity as well. To find the answer, this religious Israeli Jew began a two–year exploration to discover a common language with his Christian and Muslim neighbours. He followed their holiday cycles, befriended Christian monastics and Islamic mystics, and joined them in prayer in monasteries and mosques in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza.
At the Entrance to the Garden of Eden traces that remarkable spiritual journey. Halevi candidly reveals how he fought to reconcile his own fears and anger as a Jew to relate to Christians and Muslims as fellow spiritual seekers. He chronicles the difficulty of overcoming multiple obstacles注eological, political, historical, and psychological注at separate believers of the three monotheistic faiths. And he introduces a diverse range of people attempting to reconcile the dichotomous heart of this sacred place柠struggle central to Israel, but which resonates for us all.
Customer Reviews:
An honest, humble, inspiring adventure.......2006-09-08
I just love this guy. Starting with a simple urge to connect with his neighbors, Yossi Halevi embarks on an awkward, fascinating, dangerous journey through Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. He discovers a series of surprising characters who dream, not just of peace between Jews, Muslims and Christians, but of spiritual friendship. And the story of these fragile, budding friendships becomes an adventure of almost overwhelming power.
I want to quote from one episode, where Halevi and a madcap Jew called Eliyahu Charanamrit McLean attend a mosque in Karawa village on the West Bank:
"This mosque was a family project: Everyone here belonged to the Abu-Laben clan. They were working class people; the shaykh himself was a car mechanic.
"What do the other Muslims think of you?" Eliyahu asked.
"That we're crazy," replied Saud's father. "They think we chant the name of 'Abdallah' instead of 'Allah"". Laughter.
I asked Saud what he experienced during the zakir [or dance of remembering God]. "That our hearts kept getting closer and closer to God," he said, with the Sufi vagueness I'd so often encountered from Ibrahim. ...
Ibrahim, not to be poetically outdone, added "Our souls went up to heaven like clouds".
"When you pray together," said the shaykh's father, "you form one heart".
I felt sad for this forlorn Sufi Shteibl. Here was an Islam with which we could make peace, yet it was almost absurdly perepheral. Still, maybe the fact that a handful of Muslims and Jews had danced together was enough for God to work with; perhaps He would magnify our prayers, widen the circle of ecstasy." (p. 104-105)
Halevi is realist enough to claim no easy victories. As the level of sectarian violence rises again, his network of friends retains little but hope and prayer. It's a marvelous book.
A study in courage.......2006-05-17
One problem with writing intelligent books on religion is that religion demands the author experience it. Halevi takes this difficult challenge and seeks common ground with Christians and Muslims. To find this common ground he is willing to push his boundaries, go beyond his fears to find a common ground.
In his efforts he encounters a Catholic order of religious that seeks to return to the Jewish roots of Jesus as a common ground for Jewish-Christian relations; a Catholic monk of the Melkite rite (Jerusalem rite) seeing Arab-Jewish understanding through the Arab Christian; a common ground of genocide with Armenian Christians; a common ground of love with Sufi sheiks ...
Throughout his search runs a thread of the common monotheistic underpinnings of the three major religions of Israel. A second thread is a more universal acceptance that includes the great Eastern traditions - Buddhism and Hinduism. The third thread is the history of the Jewish people and the reality of strife in Israel. Through these threads, Halevi challenges the reader to confront his or her prejudices in the political and religious arenas.
The net result is not a great book, but one I highly recommend because of the issues raised and the author's personal willingness to share his experience in addressing the issues.
Entrance to the Garden of Eden: A Jew's Search for Hope with Christians and Muslims in the Holy Land.......2005-10-08
This is a must for all ethnic groups to read.
Hope.......2005-09-10
The title is exact. Halevi is an extraordinary person: a mystic deeply rooted in his Jewish faith but who can share a common search for peace and religious experience with Christians, the historic persecutors of Jews, and with Muslims, who have now become the "enemy." I know three of the communities of Christians he shared with and the descriptions are accurate so I can assume the Muslim sections are just as fair. Anyone searching for religious and mystic truth that is non-violent but serious about faith and God will love this book.
What real faith is all about. Amazing........2005-02-14
Yossi Halevy thinks he is only writing about interfaith connections in the holy land, but in fact the most inspiring aspect of the book is the delicate portrait of his own faith in God, where this deep faith takes him, and the grace of goodwill and wisdom that it creates inside his soul.
