    Book Description

Autobiography of Silas Thompson Trowbridge M.D. is a remarkable account of nineteenth-century medicine, politics, and personal life that recovers the captivating experiences of a Civil War–era regimental surgeon who was also a president of the Illinois State Medical Society and a United States consul in Mexico. First published in 1872 by Trowbridge’s family and even printed on a family-owned press, only a handful of copies of the initial publication survive. In this first paperback edition, Trowbridge’s memoirs are reprinted as they originally appeared.

Indiana-born Trowbridge moved to Illinois in his early twenties. A teacher by trade, he continued that career while he began the study of medicine, eventually starting a medical practice near New Castle, which he later moved to Decatur. Though respected by the community, Trowbridge lacked an authentic medical degree, so he enrolled in a four-month course of medical lectures at Rush Medical College in Chicago. Autobiography describes the atmosphere of the medical school and delineates Trowbridge’s opinions on the lack of quality control in medical colleges of the day.

Although three years of study and two annual terms of sixteen weeks were the actual requirements for the degree, Trowbridge was allowed to graduate after a single course of lectures and completion of a twenty-page thesis due to his previous experience. He then married a young widow and returned to Decatur, where he began a partnership with two local physicians and inaugurated a county medical society. In addition to practicing medicine, he was known and respected for regulating it, too, having supported legislation that would legalize dissection and prohibit incompetent persons from practicing medicine.

In 1861, Trowbridge began service as a surgeon of the 8th Illinois Volunteer Infantry commanded by Colonel Richard J. Oglesby. Autobiography describes his experiences beginning in Cairo, Illinois, where the infantry was involved in several expeditions and where Trowbridge made his “debut at the operating table.” Revealing a litany of surgical duties, replete with gruesome details, these war-time recollections provide a unique perspective on medical practices of the day. Likewise, his commentaries on political issues and his descriptions of combat serve to correct some of the early written histories of the war’s great battles.

After receiving an honorable discharge in 1864, Trowbridge returned to Decatur to resume his partnership with Dr. W. J. Chenoweth and devote himself to surgery. His reminiscences recount several difficult surgeries, his efforts to reorganize the county medical society (which had collapsed during the war), and his communications to the Illinois legislature to set higher qualifications for practicing physicians. He was later elected president of the Illinois State Medical Society and appointed by President Grant United States Consul to Vera Cruz on the eastern coast of Mexico, where he studied and challenged the treatment of yellow fever. The autobiography ends in 1874 with a six-day family vacation and the marriage of his daughter to a merchant of Vera Cruz.

          Book Description

1905. This volume contains two sketches. The first is a delightful character portrait of Fleeming Jenkin and the second is a record of the notable Stevenson family who were known engineers and builders of lighthouses.

BUT it is now time to see Jenkin at his life's work. I have before me certain imperfect series of letters written, as he says, 'at hazard, for one does not know at the time what is important and what is not': the earlier addressed to Miss Austin, after the betrothal; the later to Mrs. Jenkin the young wife.

            Book Description

From the writer of Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, comes another classic adventure. Fleeming Jenkin was a delightful character, more remarkable than anything he ever did. He attracted Stevenson by his sterling quality of friendship and his brave attitude toward life, his outstanding moral value, and his untiring intellectual effort. It was good fortune to Fleeming Jenkin that Stevenson should have left us his portrait; it was to the credit of Stevenson that he knew so well the worth of the man. Stevenson came of a family of engineers, builders of lighthouses. In the Records he has left a fascinating record of a notable family, pursuing their romantic and heroic careers. IT were hard to imagine a contrast more sharply defined than that between the lives of the men and women of this family: the one so chambered, so centred in the affections and the sensibilities; the other so active, healthy, and expeditious. From May to November, Thomas Smith and Robert Stevenson were on the mail, in the saddle, or at sea....

Well, as a college basketball player, I can say this book is somethin' special. Every new bball player should read it, cause it will change your thinkin' about this game, well it changed for me. Stretching section is realy good, cause not many of the players or coaches attend their attention to stretching these days. Strenght training exercises are specialy designed for bball players, and you don't have to think anymore what to do in the gym, what to train in order to become better bball player, everythin' is in this book. Ok, one thing is clear for sure, if you wanna train and play pro, read this book!!!

5 out of 5 stars A true success story in the kitchen.......2003-11-25

As cliche as it may sound, this cookbook has truly changed my life. Growing up, I never learned to cook for various familial reasons. The only thing I knew how to make until I picked up this book was canned soup. Whenever I went to someone's house for dinner, etc. I felt a fool because I didn't know how to do the first thing. It was humiliating.

I literally stumbled on this book two years ago in a bookstore and picked it up. This book has taught me how to cook. It was like having a stand in mom over your shoulder telling you exactly how to do everything. The book is set up so that there are 10 start-up recipes in the beginning. These recipes are designed to require the use of many basic skills. She walks you through everything in great detail every step of the way. Once you do the 10 recipes you can really get through most of the other recipes in the book. (The detailed instruction still continues somewhat through the rest of the book.)

BESIDES the learning process she takes you through, the recipes are wonderful all on their own. They are healthy, low-fat and tasty. She touches on various styles of cooking such as American, Italian, Mexican and Japanese. Just about everything I have made has turned out wonderfully. At first, it was admittedly difficult getting through the first five recipes (especially ratatouille) because remember...I did not know the first thing. But, that ratatouille recipe pretty much taught me to cook and I am so thankful for it now!

Today, cooking is one of my all time favorite hobbies. I still use her cookbook ALL the time, especially for dinners for my family on a nightly basis. My husband raves about everything I make!

I would STRONGLY suggest buying this book if you want to learn how to cook and really don't know where to start.

5 out of 5 stars The best beginner book ever.......2002-05-27

Having come from a family completely unable and unwilling to cook, I was at an extreme disadvantage wanting to learn to eat healthy. This cook book is a real world how-to. It tells you what to look for when buying veggies, how to cut them, prepare them multiple ways, gives you instructions and then real recipes. It's more than definitions of chop vs dice and boil vs simmer, the author explains how she does and how the terms may vary from one recipe to another. She gives substitutions, suggests which things can be done ahead of time, and gives realistic estimates of how long the dishes take to prepare. My family and I are much healthier than this time last year, thanks almost entirely to this book. It helped me get comppletely over being intimidated by cooking and especially cooking healthy meals. My family is amazed and healthy, and I feel I've really accomplished something positive.

I wish I would have had this cook book when I first started cooking. It has "absolutely" everything you need to know to start out; pantry items, spices, utensils. I love it. Perfect for a new cook, or someone who wants flavor without all the fat.
Pretty soon the only cookbooks I have will be by the Martha that really knows her stuff.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST!.......2001-12-02

I have several of Martha Rose Shulman's cookbooks, and this is by far the best! The recipes are very time efficient and, more importantly, they are delicious! She relies on using flavorful herbs and fresh ingredients, and her recipe instructions are clearly written. A must have for the busy cook!

                              Book Description

A beautiful handbook of more than 100 blank pages waiting to be filled with notes, sketches, photos, yarn snips, fabric swatches-maybe even the occasional poem-Knit is the perfect companion for anyone committed to exploring their creativity or simply consolidating the myriad scraps of paper that currently make up their organizational system.

Casual knitters can treat Knit as a general diary of everyday notes, while more prolific knitters and designers can use it as a place to sketch patterns and track progress on complex projects. For all levels of proficiency, the built-in needle gauge/ ruler, zip-shut pouch, pocketed dividers, and comprehensive reference sections are indispensable.

Among the special reference materials are a needle inventory chart; a calendar of holidays and knitting events; fill-in directories for favorite yarn sources and patterns; yardage requirement charts; and a basic hat pattern sized from baby to adult. Knitters can even learn how to say "yarn shop" in more than twenty languages.

This concealed wire-o journal is a companion piece to Weekend Knitting by the best-selling author Melanie Falick, and includes five full-color photographs from that book.

Asthma is not fun. Part of controlling asthma is avoiding triggers, like dust, dust mites, pollens, molds, and other triggers in the workplace. Perhaps you have "Monday Morning Asthma" and didn't realize it is something in your workplace that is making your asthma worse. This book has loads of information on where to find those asthma triggers, how to control them and what the medications do. There are resources for websites, support groups and medical help. A must-have for anyone with asthma or a family member who suffers.

3 out of 5 stars People with asthma often need magnesium supplementation.......2005-05-26

There is significant evidence that the root cause of many, if not most, cases of asthma (and many allergies as well) is deficiency of magnesium. This fact is discussed in detail by Dr. Carolyn Dean in her excellent book The Miracle of Magnesium. Dr. Dean recommends 600 mg of supplemental magnesium daily. People with asthma who follow Dr. Dean's advice about daily magnesium supplementation often improve dramatically even if they have continued to struggle with asthma under other treatments which omit magnesium supplementation. If you are suffering from asthma please read Dr. Dean's excellent book and follow her advice regarding daily magnesium supplementation. It may well be the most important thing you will ever due to relieve this terrible ailment. By the way, although a variety of magnesium supplements are available, and beneficial, chelated magnesium -- which is readily available in most health food stores -- is the most effective.

                                              Book Description

Asthma cases and deaths are on the increase in the United States and in many other Western countries, despite major advancements in treatment. This rise has made asthma an especially important public health issue, because it comes at a time when deaths from most other causes are on the decline. By 1998, the number of Americans with asthma had reached an estimated 17.3 million. The number of asthma deaths more than doubled between 1979 and 1995, totaling 5,637.

Asthma Sourcebook brings together current information on asthma for the layperson. It covers the reasons for the rise in cases of asthma, including better diagnosis of the disease, increased exposure to environmental allergens and irritants, increased exposure of children to parents' tobacco smoke, and psychosocial and socioeconomic factors. In addition, statistical data, reports on research and prevention measures, and new treatment programs are presented. A comprehensive glossary and directory of professional organizations and online resources provide guidance to readers for further help and information.

                                                    Book Description

Frank Lloyd Wright is one of the 20th century's best-known architects. Over 40 years after his death, historical and critical comment and debate are increasing and controversy continues to surround him. This volume is a chronologically arranged, annotated bibliography of English- and foreign-language sources including over 3,500 primary entries, with thousands more connected references, presented alphabetically by decades and genres. The book documents not only the literature on Wright from 1886 to the present, but also his own extensive writings. It covers source books, monographs, anthologies, exhibition catalogues, book and exhibition reviews, periodical articles, and obituaries. All references are indexed by personal names, buildings, and projects. There is also a photo-essay comprised entirely of images published here for the first time, and a comprehensive chronology of the architect's life and career, which spanned 70 years and produced about 450 buildings and almost 550 unrealized architectural projects. The book will be of great value to scholars, students, and practitioners.

Far surpassing any thriller novel, this is the amazing, true story of a man who epitomizes the indomitable human spirit. When fourteen-year-old Martin Gray finds himself and his family looting their own Warsaw factory, scrambling out of the ruins carrying sackfuls of gloves after its bombing by the Germans, his talent for quietly observing what is going on around him becomes his secret weapon. He watches, brick by brick, as his beloved neighborhood is sealed off from the rest of Warsaw, imprisoning everyone inside. He watches who wears blue; who wears white armbands, the Star of David; yellow armbands. He studies the streetcars passing through the ghetto gates to the outside. He creates a smuggling operation, hopping on and off streetcars, hiding his armband in his shirt, knowing who to bribe, creating false papers, speaking German or Polish, flirting with death, in and out, in and out, everyday. All for those he loves. This story follows Martin as he is captured with his family and taken by train to the Treblinka Concentration camp, and details his escape and heroic efforts to build a new life. This remarkable man is alive today, and his riveting story speaks to the enduring triumph of the human spirit. For Those I Loved was first published by Little, Brown & Co. in 1972, and was a New York Times bestseller as well as a bestseller in 20 languages. Including two other books in English and nine others in French, Martin Gray's books have been read by an estimated 30 million people worldwide. He was awarded the United Nations "Dag Hammarskjöld" award.

I first heard of this book when I was in college during a course on the autobiography. We didn't read it, and it was only mentioned in passing. The theme of the course was autobiography & truth and we spent a great deal of time discussing what our expectations of authors were in terms of telling the truth.

Martin Gray's book is particularly problematic because it is extremely inspiring. It tells the story of survival and heroism in the face of the Holocaust and sends a strong affirmative message about the ability of victims to take their destiny into their own hands. Very strong, and very moving.

Unfortunately, it appears that there are troubling doubts about the accuracy of Gray's book. We know that he lived in the Warsaw Ghetto. We know that he lost his parents. That something terrible happened to him, nobody questions. However, some of his accounts of Treblinka appear to be impossible. He supposedly saw things at times that they did not yet exist. His role in N.K.V.D. is not mentioned. He also (more understandably) elides the fact that he took some serious "short cuts" (wording from the introduction) in setting up his antique business.

The thing is that as you read the book, there is something very implausible about the feel of the text. He does so much, accomplishes so much, and without the ordinary pacing of ordinary life that seems normal even in the most heroic of men. It is clearly so important to Gray to show that there were Jewish heroes during the Holocaust that it seems possible that he would be willing to stretch the truth in order to make his point.

We will never know how much of For Those I Loved is truth. And that, it seems to me, is too bad. The crazy folks over at the revisionist extreme right have seized on the inaccuracies in Gray's book, and use them to attack other unimpeachable memoirs and accounts of the Holocaust. No matter how noble his mission was in the beginning, it is time for somebody to set the record straight. I personally suspect that the truth would be found to outweigh the lies, but then I generally have high hopes for people. Gray's passion and the strength of his life speaks to his essential sincerity.

For Those I Loved was ghost written by Max Gallo.

If it's all a true account of Martin Gray's life experiences, then it's remarkable. If not, as the previous reviewer contends, then it's a shame. I found it an interesting read, giving it the benefit of any doubts. However, the writing is often redundant in it's expressions of despair. Without doubt, such experiences would be despairing, however the frequency of mentioning it is distracting. A long read but not too difficult to get through. A story of many, deep losses.

I'm sure it's a moving story, but don't be fooled into thinking it is even close to a 100% true historical reality.

Gitta Sereny (author of "Into That Darkness: An Examination of Conscience", "Albert Speer: His Battlr with the Truth" and "The Healing Wound: Experiences and Reflections, Germany, 1938-2001") said the following in the New Statesman of 2 November 1979 regarding the Martin Gray book and others like it:

"It is true that, along with many authentic works, there have been books or films which were only partly true, or even were partly faked. And unfortunately, even reputable historians often fail in their care... By quoting supposed 'eyewitnesses' who are in fact repeating hearsay, (Martin) Gilbert perpetuates errors which -- because they are so easily disproved -- provide Revisionists' opportunities...

"Worse again are the partial or complete fakes such as Jean Francis Steiner's Treblinka or Martin Gray's For Those I Loved. ...

"Gray's For Those I Loved was the work of Max Gallo the ghost-writer... I myself told Gray ... that he had manifestly never been to, nor escaped from, Treblinka. He finally asked, despairingly: 'But does it matter? Wasn't the only thing that Treblinka did happen, that it should be written about, and that some Jews should be shown to have been heroic?'"

5 out of 5 stars This is the best book I've ever read........2006-12-20

Written like a novel, this is the true story of how Martin Gray survived the Holocaust. But this book is about way more than that; it's unlike anything I've ever read before. Martin Gray was just 15 years old when the Nazis invaded his homeland, Poland, in 1939. What he tells us in this book is a very personal story of the hope, courage, and strength it took for him to persevere and survive. I've read the Amazon reviews posted here by several non-believers who accuse Martin Gray of being a fraud, and I find myself disgusted that they would attempt to discredit him this way with no significant evidence to support their claims.

To be honest, I wasn't keen on reading a Holocaust memoir. I assumed the book would be filled with images of brutal and horrific crimes we all know the Nazis committed against their brothers, sisters and children. But I recently heard a radio interview with Martin Gray on NPR, and something about this interview compelled me to order this book and read his story. And what I read was so much more than yet another book about the basest forms of life committing atrocities against humanity. I read an inspiring story about hope, courage and love. My life was altered by reading this book. I wish I had read it twenty years ago so I might have learned earlier the things this book reveals: the true meaning of hope; what integrity and courage look like up close; how, with determination, we humans can accomplish almost anything. That's what this book is about. And I'm a better person for having read it.

Thank you Martin Gray. I, for one, will always remember those you loved.

I am not Jewish but like many human beings I have suffered and bore witness to suffering, and this is the most honest story I have ever read concerning human suffering and survival. Like most educated American children, I learned of the Holocaust and cried. This Story however taught me more than compassion. It gave me a deep understanding of a period in history through a human Soul. I want to say shame on you MS. King and MR. Davis for attempting to undermine this lesson to humanity with your spiteful reviews. Your words only expose your own ignorance of the positive power this story affords us all. Every Soul on earth should read Martin Gray's Story and walk each day with a tall straight back as his father did until the end. We now have a deeper personal knowledge to never let any of our brother's and Sister's suffer injustice at the hands of other humans again. We are the children of the 21st Century, hear his screams this once, so that we can prevent history from repeating such horrors ever again. Thank you Martin Gray, thank you for baring your Soul so that we may see our own more clearly. Thank you Martin, from the bottom of my heart.

This is a deceptively simple book, quite easy to read, yet potentially transformative. It offers insights, helps and provocative questions that, if carefully considered, can help one navigate the especially difficult currents of holiday grief. It does an excellent job of normalizing predictable crises related to grief during the holiday season, and offers a pathway through the experience with sensitivity, compassion and wisdom.

The author has gathered thoughtful quotes and draws on experience as a counselor and pastor to offer practical, heartfelt suggestions on dealing with grief. I've given this book many times as a gift to friends who are facing the holidays without a loved one. I highly encourage the use of this book!
