      Book Description

1930. This is the autobiography of Jerome Cardan, a celebrated Renaissance mathematician, physician, astrologer and gambler. During his lifetime he made major contributions to algebra and to probability, hydrodynamics, mechanics and geology. Cardan was the first to study such things as dice rolling, or probability theory. But all was not rosy in Cardan's life and he writes in this volume that the four greatest sadnesses in his life were: his marriage; the execution of his son, Giambatista, for poisoning his wife; his imprisonment on the charge of heresy; and the base character of his youngest son, Aldo.

5 out of 5 stars This book is the answer to total health.......2006-03-23

I received the Super Health: Seven golden Keys to Lifelong Vitality and it has changed my health and life. After reading many books on diet and health, this is the first complete compilation of information bound together with a livable system to guide you . Unlike one of the other reviewers, I want to know all the information on what affects my health in order to make informed decisions on the options I have on food, exercise and environment. I see this book as a guide to optimizing my lifestyle for vibrant health and energy not as rigid restictions that must be met at all times.

I have adopted most of the book's recommendations in my life over the last 3 months and I have lost 30 pounds, overcome sleep apnea, developed a more intimate relationship with God and recieve much greater joy and satisfaction from my life.

I recommend this book to everyone who believes they can achieve more from life than they are right now.

2 out of 5 stars Has everything except perspective.......2006-02-28

This book has everything except perspective. Its information on diet, exercise, nutritional supplements, and stress reduction is fantastic. Follow the advice here, and you may live to be 100. The problem is, you won't want to. By the time you give up most of your salt, chocolate, soft drinks, caffeine, and starch, you'll want to die. So, the first thing you need to know is that this book is overrunning with scare tactics.

My gosh, according to the author, you not only cannot drink tap water, you cannot drink bottled water--unless it actually comes in a glass bottle (otherwise you might get some contamination from the plastic). That is the level of extremism found throughout this book. You've heard lately on TV and radio the value of eating fish because it provides needed cholesterol inhibitors, but Craichy says that except for sardines we should eat no fish because our streams and oceans are polluted (and he is absolutely rabid about staying about from all shellfish, like lobster and shrimp and crab). Don't drink concentrated orange juice because it has as much sugar as Coca-Cola. Stay away from milk because pasteurization deletes all the B vitamins in it, and it causes allergies in children. Don't eat pork because one in six Americans has trichinosis from worms found in "the other white meat." On and on it rants. (Fortunately, he says we can eat eggs--but without salt!)

Where is all this leading? In the back of the book there are order forms so that you can send cash to the author and he will mail you his pills, "meal replacement" powders, and gel caps so that you can live on these food substitutes and be healthier. Ugh! Shoot me now.

Don't get me wrong, I feel the author is trying to provide valuable information. Also, I appreciated the parts of this book that offer very valid procedures for improving sleep, getting involved in exercise training, finding time for relaxation, and breaking bad health habits (such as smoking). I also appreciated the references to Scripture that appeared occasionally throughout the text. However, ultimately, the book serves as a commercial for the author's business in nutritional products. So, read the chapters selectively and try not to panic because you enjoy a doughnut once or twice a week. -- Dr. Dennis E. Hensley, Christian Book Previews.com

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book for College Students.......2005-10-24

As a college professor and parent of a college student, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. In fact, I mailed a copy to my daughter, who just started classes at the University of Iowa, and she absolutely loved it, as well. Unfortunately, these days teenagers aren't well-educated when it comes to feeding their bodies properly, and many gain the dreaded "freshman 15" when they move out on their own, primarly because they make poor food choices (pizza, fast food, soda and other junk). In plain, easy-to-understand terms, this book does a good job at teaching the fundamentals of good nutrition, and I highly recommend it as a "care package item" for parents to send to their college kids, to help them understand the importance of eating properly. Other books for your college kids I highly recommend are:

*"How to Ace Your Way Through College and Still Have a Life" (Good, smart advice for college students)

*"Getting Things Done" (Solid advice for procrastinating students)

*"Working with Words": A good reference guide

5 out of 5 stars Super advice for strong, missionary Christians . . . .......2005-10-24

Craichy's book is an elegant and practical synthesis of the latest conventional wisdom on diet and exercise. Western Christians have long believed in the power of prayer, meditation, and rational thought. And when things go wrong, there must be a key, or several keys, to unlocking our ultimate potential in this life. The basic keys have always been good, clean family living and a healthy skepticism for drugs and psychotherapy. As the world becomes more complex and, more often than not, as unfathomable as the great beyond, its dangers must be approached with increasing caution. . . . Be advised, however, that if you are not the sort of person to read the Bible and take it literally, you probably won't be helped by this book. Another warning: Knick guard Allan Houston's blurb on the back of the book about staying in the game must now be evaluated in the wake of his recent decision to retire. It is a lesson, though: no matter how much you pray and practice, you cannot fix problems that don't heal. For a practical illustration of this problem--and this is something you can do at home--conduct the following experiment:

      1. Find a man in your life who's lost his hair. (If you fit that description, use yourself.)
      2. Ask that man to pray to God that his hair grows back. Ask friends to pray also.
      3. Chart the results over several months. It's easiest to do this if you have a digital camera. To ensure unbiased results, always photograph the head under the same conditions.
      4. Conduct a poll. To ensure unbiased evaluations, post the photographs to the Internet and ask people to complete an online poll. A multiple-choice or yes/no format works best, with software in place to ensure only one vote per IP address.

It's quite likely, alas, that prayer will not result in significant regrowth of hair lost to male-pattern baldness. But don't despair: hair isn't everything. And by all means do not resort to wearing a hairpiece: toupees only work for actors, and only because actors have professional make-up consultants to help them make sure it always looks real. (Read Russell David Harper's "Bald" to see just how embarrassing a hairpiece can really be.)

As they say in France, c'est la guerre. . . .

      5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2005-10-08

7 Golden Keys to Lifelong Vitality is packed with information about nutrition and lifestyle that everyone would benefit from knowing. Craichy is not only inspirational, he gives practical direction to help achieve and maintain optimal health. I also purchased the companion fitness journal that helps to apply and track lifestyle changes. He has great website, as well. I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend this book.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-07-28

This is a marvelous book! I've been making candy for 50 years, have a number of candy cookbooks, and have used many more from libraries. This is one of the best I've ever seen! It covers the gamut of candies from fondant and fudge through divinity, caramels and nougats. There's a lot of information in the front, but you can jump straight into the recipes and if you do just what she says, you'll have success. I don't know why I never got this before - maybe the cutesy title - but it is a well-researched and well-tested recipe book, one which makes a lot of less thorough books unnecessary. Benning provides numerous variations for the recipes, and myriad "fixes" for failed candy. I don't have words for how good it is! It looks unassuming but it's packed with serious info and marvelous recipes. You can't go wrong with this one!

5 out of 5 stars To satisfy your sweet tooth, look here. .......2007-07-22

I have a terrible sweet tooth. And there are times when that sweet tooth demands satisfaction. Namely, it wants something sweet and decadent, and it wants it now. This curse has stayed with me from childhood One of my earliest culinary experiments was to replicate a fudge recipe in one of my mother's cookbooks. Needless to say, it was a terrible disaster. And these disasters remained with me as I struggled to understand the intricacies of confectionery.

Soon after it was published in 1990, I came across this book, and within its pages, I began to understand all of the weird science about candy making. And why and how it succeeds and flops so spectacularly. Unlike other culinary arts, the world of candy is best explained by the word chemistry. You can fix other recipes that go wrong, you can even repair baking disasters, but a fudge, well, when it goes wrong, there's not a lot that you can do to save it.

Lee Benning in her funny, wise book, takes the reader by the hand and gently unsnarls the world of sugar and the treats that it can make. She begins her book by talking about her own failures in the kitchen and her determination to conquer the fudge pot. Fudge that refused to set. Fudge that crystallized and turned rock hard. And then she decided to break down just what happens in that mix of sugar, butter and liquid -- and then graciously lets the reader in on the secret.

The History and Lore of Fudge
With a healthy dash of humour, the author explores the origins of chocolate, sweets and especially fudge -- it looks as though it originated in the dorms of Vassar College, in New York. Most of all, it appears to be a failed caramel recipe -- and when it didn't turn out, the disgruntled cook exclaimed "Oh FUDGE!" and it looks as though the name stuck.

      The Selling of Fudge
Once people started to fiddle with making fudge, naturally others wanted to buy it. Here you'll find the stories about fudge palaces, and especially that of James Garrahy, who it appears, has made his life into the art of making fudge -- and the feeding of forest creatures with the batches of failures...

Ten Steps to Making No-Fail Fudge at Home
Sounds crazy, right? I didn't believe it either, until I tried these steps, and discovered that yes, it really does work! What I really like about this chapter is that the author breaks down the science behind each step, and why and how it matters. Needless to say, my batches of ruined fudge have dropped to nearly zero now. Alas, the bathroom scale is going in inverse proportion to that number.

      Basic Fudge Recipes
My favorite fudge recipe is in here, what Benning calls "Bread and Butter" fudge -- it has just five ingredients: sugar, cream, butter, vanilla, and corn syrup, with variations to turn it into any flavour that you can think of. Learn this one, and you can pretty much do any of the recipes in this book. And for additional fun, the author includes Bread and Butter(milk) fudge, and Vassar Fudge, fudges made with sour cream or brown sugar, Seashore fudge, and many other variations -- including several made with alcohol. Finally, the most unusual fudge of all -- a Summer Fudge made from Jello. Really. And it's fabulous.

      Exceptional Exceptions
If you don't care about calories, this chapter is for you. Sometimes we really need to pull out all of the stops and here you find Triple Rich caramel fudge, the Lazy Cook's fudge, and the Big, Big Batch of Fudge, made with of all things, rice cereal.

      Exotic Fudges
Fudge made with Goat Milk, Carrots, and other assorted oddities. To be honest, I've haven't gone this far yet, but I guess that some day I will, if I ever get tired of that basic recipe.

      Quick 'n' Easies
Fudges that are made in the microwave or freezer. And even one that is made with potatoes. Or pudding mixes. Some of these are downright strange, and I haven't tried many of them. Still, some do look to be very interesting.

      Fondantly Speaking
Fondant is one of the more fun sorts of candy to experiment with. You can roll it, shape it, use it to cover a cake with. And you don't need to go to an expensive specialty shop to get it either. I've tried making it with these recipes, and to be honest -- it can be done!

      Something to Chew On: Caramel
Caramel is one of those things I tend to avoid, being that I have a mouthful of very expensive dental work. However, there really is nothing else to compare to that rich buttery taste of a good caramel. There's all sorts of variations here too -- caramel with chocolate, coffee, or coconut, among others. Toffee also fits in here too.

Divine Divinities, Nutty Nougats, and Mmmmmmm-Marshmallows
Here's where to find all the other candy that doesn't quite fit anywhere else. One of my favorites, divinity is here too. It's very very sweet, but light as a cloud. If you've made meringues, you can learn to make divinity -- and if you make it with brown sugar, then it becomes seafoam. Nougats are little like caramels, and equally bad for your dental work, but can be delicious.

Fudge Failures and How to Fix Them
And sometimes, you just can't make it work. This little chapter is a godsend when things can't seem to set, or the timing got away from you. It's a very useful chapter.

      Mishmash
Everything else ended up here. Taffy, fudge sauces (most failed fudges turn into wonderful sauces for ice cream, you know), and how to work with chocolate.

      A Chronology of Historic Fudges
This chapter is here for mostly curiousity's sake. It tracks down the earliest known caramel recipes in the United States, and sort of follows the transformation into fudge, and from there, to requested recipes -- quite a few of them are from the White House, and from commerical candymakers.

In addition to the above, two little additions are in this book, one that goes into detail about where to order or send for fudge, and a section on testing and temperatures. The first one is very out of date, lacking internet links, but the second more than makes up for it. This is where to find commonsense explanations of such terms as thread, soft ball, hard crack and so on -- they're actually descriptive terms for what happens when very hot sugar syrup meets ice cold water, and a way of testing without using a candy thermometer.

In short, I had a great time with this book. Once I got the ten basic steps of candy making down, I felt as though I could do anything in the kitchen. That year, I was able to give tins of homemade fudge to my chocoholic friends and they went into raptures over it. One even said that it put 'instant fur on her teeth.' From that heady experience, I moved on to divinity, pralines, you name it, I tried making it.

True, you're probably going to gain instant weight just by reading these recipes. Those of you out there with incurable sweet tooths will be found by their nearest and dearest in a sugar haze, with the litter of dirty pots and dribbles of chocolate all around the house. Benning makes the art of candy making fun and satisfying, and almost guilt free.

The text is clear and easy to follow, and while the author does get repetitive in spots, I can excuse her that. It's obvious that she loves what she is doing and delights in sharing that knowledge with the reader. There's bits of humor here and there, and you'll find yourself chuckling right along with her. It's this little touch that makes this a cookbook worth keeping and going over -- I've had my edition for nearly twenty years now and I still refer to it whenever I venture into the kitchen for a batch of fudge. I know that if I try any of these recipes, it will work.

Forget the calories, find the best ingredients that you can, get your hands on a good candy thermometer and get to the fun art of making fudge. Get the rest of the family involved too; after all, if everyone else is eating it, it's just another excuse to make a new batch of fudge, right?

      Happily Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Cook Book.......2005-10-04

This is the way all cookbooks should be written. Plain and simple.

The author explains the history of fudge then how to make several different bases. For the most part, she explains what each ingredient will do to the base and which variations you can make by changing the base.

As far as the review that says none of the recipes come out - the author goes over this topic. Fudge will come out different everytime you make it. The are a lot of conditions in the kitchen that are uncontrollable (for me at least - air quality, humidity, distance above sea level, etc).

I have made several batches of fudge out of this book. Probably in the neighborhood of 40. Due to errors on my part, I would say 25 of them came out as described. Only three I had to throw out. I was able to find other uses for the rest :o)

When I was done with the book I felt like I was an expert on fudge. That is pretty much what I look for in a cookbook. When I get done with it I want to know everything I can about it. I want to know how to adjust a recipie to get what I want.

drolly written and well-researched. you will know all there is to know about fudge after reading this book!.
the recipes are great, with the best/clearest instructions for fudge-making that i have ever seen. my very first effort yielded a pound of pretty good fudge! with no thermometor!
get this book, make loads of fudge and take up jogging or something.

5 out of 5 stars Best Fudge Book Ever!!.......2005-08-04

Terrific book. I am no candy-maker but had success with the very first recipe I made. Aptly named, Bread and Butter Fudge. Am now in process of trying variations and so far everyone is a success. I read that one reviewer said she tried all the recipes and not one turned out. She had 300 recipe failures? Can't believe it. After all, one of them, the Mamie Eisenhower one, came from the Eisenhower Library at Gettysburg and is the same one used during World War II to raise money for the war effort. I remember my Mother making it. Maybe dvaugh just needs a new candy thermometer.

Having impulsively adopted a 9-month old male pekingese puppy, I was searching for all the information I could get about the breed. I purchased several books on the subject and found this to be the most comprehensive, without being complicated. I found the sections on training and grooming particularly helpful, and the pictures demonstrated how a well-bred and well groomed "peke" should look. I recommend this book to those unfamiliar with the breed. It has been an enormous help to me.

5 out of 5 stars Great, great book!.......2001-06-23

Parents, this book is wonderful! If you have a 2 year old child that will not seem to listen and you have tried everything then you need this book. It explains why screaming, yelling and spanking do not work on some children. This book explains why your 2 year old acts like he or she does and how to deal with your 2 year old when they misbehave. I have read several books on this subject and this one I definitely like the best. It is small and easy to read. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars short and complete.......2000-03-04

I recommend this book to all of my friends because it is very thorough and very short! This is especially helpful if the other parent isn't much of a reader (at least about child development) I highlight a few chapeters when I want my husband to understand more about what our daughter is going through.

5 out of 5 stars this is a really great book.......1999-11-07

I have read a lot of books on child development/parenting/etc but this short book is one of the best. Everything is there that is in the longer books (and more) but as a busy parent I actually have time to read it. Even better, I can give it to my husband to read ( a chapter or two) and he'll do it! I've also read the toilet training book by this author and it is much much better than anything else--no formulas, just good common sense.

A winning investment strategy for today's volatile markets.

Long a secret guarded by financial insiders, index funds have become a favorite with individual investors of every level. Packed with helpful charts and graphs, readers will learn how to: * choose the right fund * get started (with as little as a few hundred dollars) * develop a sound portfolio * gauge portfolio risk * assess portfolio performance * make adjustments to improve diversification

Hailed as "a landmark book" in the foreword by John C. Bogle, former Chairman of the Board of The Vanguard Group of Investment Companies, INDEX YOUR WAY TO INVESTMENT SUCCESS leads the way to mastering a stable and lucrative investment strategy.

Quite pleased, and informed. The 2 authors have done a commendable job in delivering the facts and opinions in a straightforward, manner. This is one of the better index books out there. Though there are still far too little. 5 index books total?....The other great index book is Larry's...But overall, this book is top notch.

                  Book Description

Alastair S. Gunn and P. Aarne Vesilind provides students with practical insight into the engineering code of ethics and how a practicing engineer is obligated to act in a responsible manner. To illustrate the complexities involved with acting in an ethical fashion, the authors have created characters that encounter a number of situations that test the engineering code of ethics. The dialog between these characters highlights different perspectives of realistic situations that students will face as practicing engineers. As they proceed through the book, students see how the code can help in decision making, as well as the implications of various decisions. The philosophical theory that supports the ethical positions encountered is presented as boxed material following each section.

5 out of 5 stars Readable novel with engaging side trips.......2003-04-23

An engaging short novel about an engineer, interspersed with side-bars on philosophy, history, and several well-known historical case studies. Like many other successful books on engineering ethics, co-authorship by an engineer and a philosopher/ethicist results in a thoughtful perspective on practical dilemmas that any engineer might encounter. By the time the reader has finished the book, essentially all of the categories of ethical conflicts encountered by engineers and addressed in professional engineering codes of ethics have been illustrated. This book (or just sections of it) would be a valuable supplement to almost any engineering design course.

                          Book Description

You will laugh — you might cry —- you will learn.

The gift-planning process is a journey, beginning with the early steps of cultivation, leading eventually to the destination of a completed gift and then continuing along the path of donor recognition. The trail to the completed gift can be steep and arduous, or it can be a gentle slope. Reaching the summit can take years or, in rare cases, a few moments.

Making the trip successfully requires careful planning, the right equipment, good conditioning and proper nourishment. The wise gift-planning trekker also packs some healthy "snacks" to munch along the way.

Along the Way in Planning Giving is a 128-page container of "trail snacks" for planned giving practitioners and others who assist in the gift-planning process. The anecdotes and "articlettes" provide insight, advice, humor, inspiration and practical information. These bite-sized literary morsels are "energy bars" to keep you going on the planned giving trail.

This book can be used to educate newcomers to the planned giving field and as a means to refresh veteran trekkers. It can also benefit support staff, committee and board members, key volunteers, donors and their advisors. It can even be an excellent answer to the person sitting next to you on the airplane who asks the follow-up question, "Planned giving? Hmmm. Just what does a planned giving officer do?"

I would recommend buying it, especially if you are involved in being a landlord for students. It may help you avoid some pitfalls and learn from his mistakes, without having to make them yourself!

                            Book Description

A guide to the music of Britain's most prominent living composer, this volume contains the most complete listing available of Davies's works (unpublished as well as published) plus a comprehensive discography and a bibliography of nearly 1,000 items. Each entry is keyed to the discography and the annotated bibliography. There is also a brief biography. Maxwell Davies is extremely prolific, with nearly 300 compositions to his credit so far. He is also a conductor of distinction. This work will be of interest to scholars and students as well as anyone interested in 20th-century composers. Davies currently holds the posts of Associate Conductor/Composer with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic, among other positions. Moreover, he has been a strong voice in support of music education in Britain and has composed many works for children and young performers. When he taught music to children, he encouraged them to compose, believing that most have a natural musical ability.
