Big Red might have been subtitled The Anthropology of a Submarine. On these pages, Time magazine correspondent Douglas C. Waller--granted surprising levels of access by the Pentagon--describes life onboard the USS Nebraska, a Trident nuclear submarine, in compelling detail. Big Red lacks the thrills of Blind Man's Bluff, but it is nonetheless an engrossing book on the routines of the silent service.

The Nebraska is an awesome triumph of military engineering: standing on end, it would be taller than the Washington Monument. And its might is impressive, including missiles that could wipe out Moscow and torpedoes "with three times the explosive power of the 1995 blast that leveled the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City." Readers will gain an intimate understanding of how the Trident works without ever having to set foot on one themselves. Waller has an uncanny sense of what questions to probe, such as why Trident submariners aren't likely to drown in claustrophobic compartments--a staple scene in submarine movies. (Answer: Flooding would cause the sub to sink, and then crushing water pressure would end the ordeal before the air ran out.) And yet movies are more than diversions, writes Waller: "Practically every Trident submariner had seen Crimson Tide and been jarred by it.... Officers still discuss Crimson Tide during private seminars on commanding a ship."

Waller also displays a powerful sense of irony. He describes a Sunday service onboard the Nebraska, and then deadpans, "Their worship over, [the submariners] would now practice how to destroy much of what God created." He also isn't afraid to ask difficult questions, such as whether women and gays should be allowed onboard (currently, neither are), or to note that marital fidelity is a problem for both husbands at port call and the wives they leave back home. It would be wrong to say Big Red reads like a potboiler--there are no Crimson Tide-like moments of near launches or mutiny--but it is exciting in its own way. This is at once an impressive journalistic achievement and an incredibly informative book. --John J. Miller

Book Description

The Trident nuclear submarine is the most complex war machine the United States Navy has ever produced, a $1.8 billion marvel crammed with more modern military technology than any other vessel in the world. It is an 18,750-ton steel monster, taller in length than the Washington Monument and wider than a three-lane highway at its center. Deep beneath the ocean, it can sail silently for months, prectically impossible to detect by the enemy. And the twenty-four ballistic missiles on board just one of these subs have enough strategic nuclear warheads to unleash twice the explosive energy detonated by all the conventional weapons in World War II.

Now, for the first time, veteran Time magazine correspondent Douglas C. Waller takes you on a tension-packed, three-month patrol deep in the Atlantic Ocean and inside one of these Tridents, the U.S.S. Nebraska. Granted more access to these awesome submarines than any journalist before, Waller penetrates one of the most secretive worlds in the U.S. Military.

The Cold War may be over, but the U.S. Navy still has Tridents lurking the oceans, always ready at a moment's notice to unleash a nuclear holocaust. In chilling detail, Big Red reveals the top-secret procedures for starting World War II -- the secret codes, the elaborate fail-safe mechanisms, the highly classified battle tactics for nuclear combat.

This book takes you into this closed society as a witness to secret rituals and life experience where submarines, underwater for months, hope never to unleash the destructive power they command.

4 out of 5 stars Submariner.......2006-01-11

I enjoyed this book greatly. This reminded me of my time on board a submarine in the 80's. I was on an SSN, however many of the experiences were the same. The memories were the same. While reading this book, I had the opportunity to remember old friends and relive old experiences. This book would be an interesting read for all submariners or anyone interested in what life is like on a submarine.

As a member of the USS Nebraska commissioning crew I was excited to find a book about the boat I once called home. I served on the Nebraska as a sonar technician from April of 1993 through the end of my enlistment in 1996. I was there when she first put to sea and submerged for the first time.

You might think- "Why would someone who served on the boat want to read about it?" I served in the USN at an odd time in history: The USSR had collapsed but the US continues to build and deploy missile-boats. The military was being down sized and long time service members were being moved to retirement. When we went on patrol #1 in 1994 there was little if any contact with foreign navies and none with any hostel ones. I was interested in what life on these seemingly obsolete yet devastatingly powerful boats was like in the late '90s. Mr. Waller did a superb job in conveying life on an SSBN. Though I suspect the Navy arranged more perks than is normal (mid-shipmen runs and steel beaches are considered easy duty and were rare events). But despite that I found the book excellent. Other books about submarines like Rising Tide and Blind Man's Bluff offer more "excitement" in terms of daring missions and Cold War drama and while not to lessen those books, Big Red is real life on a submarine and written by a man who met active duty submariners and lived there life with them. The other books seem to be written by wannabes who though fascinated by submarines never bother to convey the human element of the routine and isolation nor understand why the stories they are reciting are inaccurate because they have never served on a submarine. e.g. Rising Tide has an story of Soviet submariners dying for failure to decompress. Submarines are obviously air tight and since they are sealed at sea level the pressure inside is always close (in does change a bit) to sea level so there is never any need to decompress. If the sailors in the story actually had to pressurize to the stated depth- 5000 ft- in order to escape their downed boat they would likely have died anyway as at that pressure the human body would be badly damages- sorry all you Abyss fans.

One criticism however, submarines are referred to as "boats" not "subs". The author constantly uses the later and it drove me nuts. Other books do the same.

I would also recommend Dark Waters about the NR-1. Offers both the exploits of an incredible boat but also is written by a member of her original crew thereby combining both elements.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fascinating.......2003-10-23

I have found 'Big Red' to be an absolutely fascinating book. I am not a submariner, and I doubt that if I were that I would be so captivated as it is mostly a sociological study of the crewmen and their interactions on a Trident submarine on a three month underwater voyage. I am in a technology intensive profession, and am interested in the technical details of the sub, which is why I initially bought the book, but came to enjoy the complex interactions of the men on the sub more than the actual submarine specific information.

The professionalism of this group of people is one of the great untold (or nearly so) stories of the cold war and modern times. I was impressed with the incredible amount of training and simulations while on a typical cruise. As an airline (and former Air Force) pilot, I am more than aquatinted with training and simulation, but these men really take the concept to a whole new plane (no pun intended).

If you have any interest in submarines, and more specifically, life aboard a modern nuclear missile sub like the 'Nebraska,' you will love this book.

3 out of 5 stars Three Months is a Very Long Time.......2003-04-18

I should have expected the type of book this turned out to be. After all it is probably difficult to inject a lot of excitement in a book that details a boat who's main purpose is to avoid other ships and basically hide. All this during peace time. The book detailed this authors three-month trip on a nuclear missile submarine as it tooled around Atlantic. There were no exciting cold war cat and mouse games; no cool espionage inspired missions, or any massive equipment failures to review so the author stuck to the different workings of the boat. I found the real value in the time he spent talking about how certain tasks are done on the submarine and how they go about a typical tour. Yet this interesting detail can only go so far.

What I did not like is the amount of time the author devoted to the background of the crew. I may be a bit hard, but who cares about the personal life of every other sailor. I wanted to know how the boat operated what they did and maybe some good old sea stories. The book delivered on two of the three. I think the author could have made the book far more exciting if he would have forgotten the home life of the sailors and gave the reader some interesting stories from when the cool war was hot for these subs, surly there was one or two stories that could be told. Overall the book was average, if you are interested in how these massive subs work then you will find it interesting if not a bit slow. If you are looking for a true life Hunt for Red October then keep looking.

4 out of 5 stars A fun read.......2002-05-28

I really enjoyed this book. Being in the Air Force, it was a look at a different world. I have to give the author a lot of credit because much of the mission he was not able to see, I'm sure, but had to get that information academically, not first hand. It started out a little slow, but picked up once at sea. I enjoyed the fact that some of the flubs were left in, and it wasn't sanitized too much. The book was interesting, and gave me an appreciation of the men who serve aboard these awesome machines. This book is a perfect airplane or trip book for those who like military non-fiction.

    Book Description

This book presents a new view of Robert Boyle (1627-91), the leading British scientist in the generation before Newton. It comprises a series of essays by scholars from Europe and North America that scrutinize Boyle's writing on science, philosophy and theology, bringing out the subtlety and complexity of his ideas. Particular attention is given to Boyle's interest in alchemy and to other facets of his ideas that might initially seem surprising in a leading advocate of the mechanical philosophy. Many of the essays use material from among Boyle's extensive manuscripts, which have recently been catalogued for the first time. The introduction surveys the state of Boyle studies and deploys the findings of the essays to offer a reevaluation of Boyle. The book also includes a complete bibliography of writings on Boyle since 1940.

You're no dummy to salivate at the thought of Baked Chocolate Pillows, Fallen Chocolate Soufflé, or Mom's Apple Pie. Following the easy, breezy format of the Dummies series, pastry chef Bill Yosses, who spent a decade at the four-star Bouley Restaurant in New York City, takes you through these recipes and 130 more in Desserts for Dummies. The book is cowritten by Bryan Miller, once the restaurant critic for the New York Times. The 16 pages of color photographs in this book are alluring, but a few more illustrations in black and white would help, particularly accompanying the recipes for making puff pastry and strudel dough. You'll dive easily into recipes such as Toasted Coconut Frozen Soufflé and English Trifle, which is made from scratch starting with instructions for sponge cake. Yosses and Miller also offer information on ingredients and techniques to enlarge your repertoire and improve your skills. Dessert making is the most precise form of cooking, and Desserts for Dummies is appropriately less frantic and more direct than other volumes in the Dummies cooking series.

After 25 years working in clay, I finally read Paulus Berensohn's "Finding One's Way with Clay". He describes many techniques for pinching pots, and ways to experiment with clay to create new expressions. The steps in making simple or complex hand modeled pieces are clearly explained, and I found them useful in teaching elementary art classes. There's also a thorough chapter on building a simple sawdust kiln.

          Book Description

One of the most critical environmental challenges facing both Californians and Australians in the 1860s involved the aftermath of the gold rushes. Settlers on both continents faced the disruptive impacts of mining, grazing, and agriculture; in response to these challenges, environmental reformers attempted to remake the natural environment into an idealized garden landscape. As this cutting-edge history shows, an important result of this nineteenth-century effort to "renovate" nature was a far-reaching exchange of ideas between the United States--especially in California--and Australia. Ian Tyrrell demonstrates how Californians and Australians shared plants, insects, personnel, technology, and dreams, creating a system of environmental exchange that transcended national and natural boundaries. True Gardens of the Gods traces a new nineteenth-century environmental sensibility that emerged from the collision of European expansion with these frontier environments.
Tyrrell traces historical ideas and personalities, provides in-depth discussions of introduced plants species (such as the eucalyptus and Monterey Pine), looks at a number of scientific programs of the time, and measures the impact of race, class, and gender on environmental policy. The book represents a new trend toward studying American history from a transnational perspective, focusing especially on a comparison of American history with the history of similar settler societies. Through the use of original research and an innovative methodology, this book offers a new look at the history of environmentalism on a regional and global scale.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent comparative history.......2003-11-15

For anyone interested in the Pacific Rim, and in comparative history, this book provides a fascinating introduction to the beginnings of an environmental consciousness in the West and in Australia. Centred on plants and water, Tyrrell provides a convincing number of examples of shared problems between California and Australia; he also highlights the vexed issues of introduced species, and the aesthetic ideologies which accompany the use of "exotic" plants.
It is solid history, but also fun to read.

                        Book Description

This long-overdue, witty, and revealing book on living life with teenagers begins with the premise that adolescence, as we know it, is nothing but a social construction. “Even your most aristocratic ancestors,” Gore writes, “never knew these long seasons of middle school and orthodontia, Ritalin and yo-yo diets, standardized tests and summer vacations, call-waiting and CD Walkmans, football practice and study abroad programs, learner’s permits and college choices.” Much of what parents fear about their kids reaching their teens, she notes, stems from popular culture, media scare tactics, and parents’ own dubious, sometimes painful experiences. Instead of fear and ultimatums, Gore offers a map for navigating the inevitable changes that come with kids growing older—wanting more freedom, peer-influenced decision-making, burgeoning sexual selves—and confronting the life changes moms and dads, who were “cool” themselves only yesterday, face as their parenting responsibilities and identities shift. Whatever, Mom is the only teen guidebook to include the opinions of teens themselves, including chapter-by-chapter rebuttals by Gore’s daughter, Maia.

This book made me laugh, sign, and in some places get all teary eyed. I'm going to save this book for when my daughter(s) goes through puberty.

Ariel Gore did it again with this book. She is such a fine writer and hipster mama. I absolutely love all her work and she also is a skilled public speaker, when I've heard her read excerpts from her books.

Back to the book, the inclusion of Maia's entries adds to the conversational tone of the book. Buy this book if you are parenting a girl-woman. It will give you a reality check on how to best parent your daughter during her teen years.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on parenting teenagers.......2004-07-12

This is a lionhearted meditation on guiding our children through their teenage years and learning how to let go. I found Ariel Gore's well-researched advice extremely helpful. The chapters written by her daughter are poignant and, when they poke fun, seem to be all in good family humor. If you have children over eleven, you will want to read this.

2 out of 5 stars Dissing Mom and Getting Away With It.......2004-06-22

I have not read the book but did read several excerpts from it by the mom (author) and 14-year old snip (daughter).

It seems like daughter gets to dismiss or denigrate mom regularly and with impunity. One of the child's catch-phrases about her mom's actions or thoughts are, "Who's the genius?"

Mom says she often wonders, "Hey, I am paying for your food and clothes and giving you rides everywhere, Why don't I get any respect?"

I would guess she doesn't because she's let this kid think her quips are what passes for discourse between indolent youngsters and hardworking parents.

Better give this book a pass and read Laura Schlessinger's works. For this particular situation, LS would recommend a short but firm talk about a new set of rules. Following these being broken, the snip returns to a room stripped of everything but a mattress and 2 changes of clothes. Of course, there are no trips to the Mall, spending money, cell phone, or late-night forays sans accountability. [The child was particularly irked that she had to let her mom know what she was doing, who she was with, and where she was.]

She earns them back by showing respect for mom's rearing her and deep regard for mom's vastly greater knowledge.

Is there hope for this particular mother-daugher duo? The chances seem slim.

4 out of 5 stars doing the best we can..........2004-04-22

I loved Ariel's new book. It came just at the right time, as I mourn the loss of my "baby" and am learning to embrace this new developing woman-child in my house.

I think this book is really really great. When I was reaching out for others to share experiences in parenting a young teen and being a rad mom ... There just wasn't much there.

There are so many books for birth and pregnancy and toddlers and all that. But Parenting teenagers is the next big step in parenting. And there is no book that is keeping up with the times.

Whatever Mom - Rings true! Its comforting, helpful, witty, wise and sweet. I'm glad this book is here! And yes, I might be prejudiced cuz I'm all quoted in the book because I filled out her survey questions and I'm a "hip mama". BUT, I don't know. It's a darn sweet book!

                          Book Description

Edna Hibel's latest book reveals her to be more than an internationally celebrated artist-she is also a wonderful story teller. This is light reading, with short stories telling of the strange, funny and unexpected events that this unusually sensitive and loving woman has experienced throughout her lifetime.

This book has 153 pages, has a four-color soft cover, and has cover art and inside illustrations by Hibel.

Throughout the book it becomes apparent that the very accomplished artist is far from being a prima donna. In fact, her modesty about her talents and artistic success shine through in relationships with everyone with whom she comes in contact -from royalty to field workers. She thinks of others first, with a deep-rooted sense of optimism and belief in the goodness of her fellow man. Like Will Rogers, Edna seems to have never met a human being she didn't like.

Reading about the sunny personality of this artist will help readers understand why she is considered one of the most successful woman artists in America today. As one story pointed out, admirers of her art who get to know her find no personality faults to take away from the beauty of her works. Edna is everyone's dream grandmother-only with a brush in her hand.

Her stories reveal a very vibrant, creative artist in the prime of her career at age eighty-one.

                          Book Description

Ellen Steinberg's Irma, painstakingly crafted out of Irma Rosenthal Frankenstein's voluminous writings, gives us an inspiring and richly rewarding account of the life and times of an active, socially engaged woman who devoted herself to her family and her community over the course of a long and full life. Irma (1871-1966) was born in Chicago—just before the Chicago Fire—of German Jewish parents who had come to the U.S. shortly after the Civil War. She attended public schools and the University of Chicago, participated energetically in Jewish women's and social-welfare activities, raised her family, and published one poem and a small book.

Irma's journals and diaries were private accounts in which she chronicled the rhythm of her days and the shape of her life. She recorded her thoughts and short quotations from her reading, jotted down her own poems and short stories, constructed dinner-party menus, and wrote biographical sketches of her family. Interspersed among the records of what she did when and with whom are a number of lengthy reflections on Chicago history, her early life, religious beliefs, education, her aspirations, disappointments, sorrows, and successes. She documented her family's activities during the Chicago Fire, the city's rebuilding, early educational curricula in the city's schools, what it was like to participate in the suffrage movement and vote for the first time, the effect of the Great Depression on the middle class, and World War II as seen from her perspective.

In each chapter, Ellen Steinberg has set Irma's contemporary entries and later memoirs against the context of the Chicago history that Irma knew so well. Irma's story will fascinate those interested in diaries and autobiography, women's history, and Chicago history. From a plethora of rich source materials—including over half a million words of Irma's writings alone—Steinberg has created a seamless, fascinating narrative about a Chicago woman who, although "nobody famous" (in her words), lived a vital life in a vibrant city.

                          5 out of 5 stars A Chicago Woman's Story to share.......2005-01-31

Ellen FitzSimmons Steinberg literally tripped over a collection of Irma Rosenthal Frankenstein's diaries in a Southern Illinois used bookstore where they had languished for years (Happily today they are now in the collections of the Chicago Jewish Archives). She weaves together a delightful biography of a woman who hadn't thought herself important; and yet Irma corresponded with Carl Sandburg and partook in nature walks with Jen Jensen and the likes of Laredo Taft. She was a mother and a middle class housewife who took time from her day to keep a diary. Her notes are invaluable glimpses into the past of a city on the make, and from the time of the great Chicago fire to the post World War period.

At age 88 when most women have resigned themselves, Irma Rosenthal Frankenstein was an active part of a grass roots movement to save the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore as a National Park. She published a story about an outing to the dunes she had taken many years before in November 1917, and back when the movement to save the dunes as a park from Gary to Michigan City was in its infancy.

Alas the movement to save the Indiana dunes was tabled with the outbreak of WWI. The slogan `First Save the Country then Save the Dunes' was a battle cry that was forgotten as soon as the war ended and after a tiny state park was established in 1923. By mid century with Big Business about to gobble up the most precious part of the remaining un-saved dunes, several ladies from Ogden Dunes began an effort to rescue the enchanting bald and forest covered sand hills, and that had from time immemorial been a beach retreat for Chicagoans who lived up the lakeshore and across the state line in Illinois.

It was during this last big push to save the lakeshore dunes that in1958, the widow of Dr. Victor Frankenstein, who had suffered a heart attack and from her hospital bed in Chicago orchestrated the publication of "The Chronicle of the Befogged Dune Bugs." Her adventure story became a fundraiser for the Save the Dunes Council; the group that battled the big steel companies and other intimidating interests in the halls of Congress. After several years the ladies won the war, when Congress established the creation of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in November 1966 but in the battle had lost the most important part of the dunes. Irma had also died the previous January 1966.

Her interesting life story lives on because of the good fortune of a contemporary who stumbled onto her notes and charitably published a story Irma had always hoped to.
