Book Description
In 1967 Larry Heinemann was sent to Vietnam as an ordinary soldier. It was the most horrific year of his life, truly altering him—and his family—forever. In his powerful memoir, Heinemann returns to Vietnam, riding the train from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh city and confronting the memories of his war year. Black Virgin Mountain confirms Heinemann’s legendary plain-spoken reputation as one of the essential chroniclers of our war in Vietnam

"Burn, baby, burn": an American echo.......2006-03-10
The voice of violence is heard in cities and among the rural poor across America today, and its not just because the corporate statists have successfully veiled the voices of peace that have been ignored by corporate media or sometimes forcefully silenced; but also because violence is the voice that America has taught to its own disenfranchised for a long time now. America is a violent teacher. Violence is as American as apple pie.
Author Larry Heinemann grew up in an American working class family with a "straight arrow upbringing", a result "of all those belt whippings" by his old man who had a "fierce and violent temper". This was normal for most working class families living in what would become known as cannon fodder neighborhoods - neighborhoods from which Uncle Sam conscripted draft slaves to fight his war in Vietnam. Heinemann tells us that when his draft notice arrived in the mail box back in '66, there was another draft notice with it for his brother. These two young men and later another brother were all drafted into the armed forces, instructed in the use of deadly weapons, taught how to kill, and then brainwashed into believing it was honorable to wage war against innocent civilians. That whole draft affair and military induction was violent instruction.
For over two hundred years America has permitted genocide against its own native peoples as well as thousands of lynchings of African-Americans. America has burned babies in Alabama and in Vietnam. Heinemann was in Vietnam shooting "Vietnamese down like dogs", napalming or strafing "them hard enough", and poisoning them and their farmland "with Agent Orange". Is it any wonder that the violent whirlwind haunts America with her echo "Burn, baby, burn"?
Heinemann returned to America, the Violent, only to find one brother a post-war suicide while the other left his family never to be heard from again. Heinemann realizes that America has a class system, though not as apparent as Europe's, and that the children of fat cats never paid the sacrifices that blue collar do. As Tom Paine once put it - "War is the gambing table of governments, citizens the dupes of the game", or as Heinemann says - citizens are "an integral, even dedicated, party to a very wrong thing".
Heinemann is still trying to get over growing up in America, the Violent, and his killing experiences in Vietnam in order "to be rid of it". He is unable to become proactive in today's peace movement. Heinemann doesn't address current concerns, such as what is the future of violence in America? Will Bush's information warfare against Middle Easterners give way to riots with whites against Arabs and Blacks? What are the corporatists in power teaching those not in power? The crop of peace or blood depends on the seeds sown today - so move on Heinemann! There's peace to reclaim.
Really interesting memoir of Vietnam and life afterwards..........2006-02-18
My dad was in Vietnam and I have often wondered what went through his mind when he returned in the late 60's. This book gave me some idea, though of course each man is unique, and Larry Heinemann's story is brilliantly written. He pulls no punches and tells it like it was and like it is. Truly an honest look into the heart of the average Vietnam Veteran. God bless everyone of them for their courage in the face of a nasty, bloody, unjust war. They didn't deserve the kind of misery they got when they were drafted into the US Army. Larry shows us the heart and soul of Vietnam and his story is a beautiful thing!
The Power of Revisitation.......2006-02-13
Although it did not garner national attention or give rise to any widespread outpourings of remembrance, this past April marked the thirtieth anniversary of the fall of Saigon. The most lasting impression we have - aside from that gleaming granite commemorative engraved with 58,000 plus names on the Washington Mall - seems to be the quintessential "bug-out" photo of a chopper on the roof of the American embassy, a too-long tether of people desperate to clamber aboard.
As is often the case, the years have been kind to Vietnam annealing some of its sharpness, if not in the memories of the generation that served there, then at least in terms of the original stigma attached to it. Perhaps as a country we have mellowed enough to see that it had some unpleasant but necessary lessons to pass along. All wars do, though it is the young who must purchase that knowledge for us. But even with that, there remains the lasting stench of defeat, along with the awkward doling out and acceptance of blame by aging politicians, whenever the word 'Vietnam' is uttered.
According to the record books, American soldiers were long gone by the time those frantic Vietnamese began queuing up for the last chopper out. But when it comes to war in general and Vietnam specifically, the records aren't always on mark. Which is why three decades later books like Heinemann's Black Virgin Mountain are still being written and read. We simply cannot get enough of the subject to affix it with a permanent, acceptable label and then hang it away like an out-of-fashion coat.
The mountain of the title was the focal point of Heinemann's year in hell. He had already returned to the country a number of times in the 1990s, often in conjunction with writers' conferences, when he and another writer, Larry Rottmann, took the trip to what is known in Vietnam as Nui Ba Den.
The text crackles with an anger that, by Heinemann's own admission, remains unabated despite the passing of thirty-seven years since his tour in `Nam. Having lost two brothers to those residual emotional conflicts that simmer long after the actual combat is over, he is brutally frank about his experiences ("Every human vitality is taken from you as if you'd been skinned; yanked out like you pull nails with a claw hammer; boiled off, the same as you would render a carcass at hog-killing") and his opinions concerning the conduct of the war. It is difficult to decide which leader bears the greater brunt of his scathing commentary - LBJ or William Westmoreland.
Happily, the entire book does not focus solely on the author's lingering revulsion for the war. There are large travelogue segments, life slices of rich imagery showing how the Vietnamese have moved along with far less lingering acrimony than have we since the end of what they call the "American War." Included is a wonderful description of the French colonial era bureaucrat's home-turned-guest-house at which they stayed in Hanoi. Its exotic past (koi pond, louvered windows with a dozen coats of paint) resonates like something straight out of 1940s cinema - "Casablanca" on a different continent. Heinemann includes engaging snippets of a portion of one trip involving the Vietnam Railway and its sometimes idiosyncratic train station employees. Something we don`t expect after all those plane loads of bombs and Agent Orange, is the spectacular scenery. Perhaps most revealing of some kind of personal transformation is a statement he makes after watching the Southeast Asian panorama from the train`s window, "And there it was, the country at peace, the thing I had come to see."
In contrast to the many positive things Heinemann has to say about that nation, in the latter part of the book there is the unnerving visit to the tunnels at Cu Chi. Juxtapositioned next to his own middle-aged physical discomfort at "duckwalking" through a small section of the enlarged-for-tourists-maze, Heinemann gives us a palpably frightening description of what it was like for an outfit's smallest soldier to be pressed into service as a tunnel rat. Fear, claustrophobia, the myriad things to remember to listen for, to smell, to see in order to scope out a tunnel and stay alive - if after reading it you don't come away with the distinct itch of something crawling on your skin, the feel of dirt sticking to the sweat on your bare back, then you may already be dead.
Language rampages back and forth between politely literate and gritty street talk, oftentimes within the same sentence. Normally this would be where a caution against putting it into the hands of middle school children doing history papers would be placed. But there is little early teens have not already heard. For obvious reasons anything related to that period of time is best displayed in the lingo of the day. Heinemann's choice of words may have been his way of showing us that he can walk both sides of the line, i.e., that he is an accomplished writer with a well-developed, post-tour vocabulary, but whose awareness is forever etched with the earthy, peppery talk of men at war. He may also be enjoying his ability to keep the non-military reader a little off-balance: the seriously out-of-kilter, day-after-day world of the average soldier. And whoever predicted the pending demise of the semicolon, hasn't read Larry Heinemann.
But to the rest of those doing research on the embattled 60s and 70s, this is a seminal book, one that stands outside all the political posturing and sociological conjecture. It is an invaluable look into the dehumanizing influences of combat by someone who lived it.
So, once again to war and its lessons. Our unglamorous departure from Saigon over thirty years past remains a thorn in the side of many, though for an assortment of differing reasons. It is a picture we need to keep close to us as we devise our exit strategy for Iraq after destroying their corrupt, sadistic, but functioning political infrastructure. It would be lamentable if history were to look back on our crucial departure from Baghdad only to have it described by some future Heinemann as "an agony, and an orgy of unambiguous betrayal ... right to the end and still, a bungled tangle..."
I Really Wanted to Like it More.......2005-12-30
This book has its moments. The author returns to Vietnam years after being a soldier there and travels around the country.
I really wanted to like the book more than I did. However, even though it is a small book, I got the feeling that at least 25% of it was sort of filler. I understand his Paco's Story is a great book. I need to read it. In the meantime, I wouldn't recommend this book.
He was a soldier once and young.......2005-12-14
This is a wonderful combination of achingly-real men-at-war memoir and modern-day Vietnam travelogue -- written with unforgettable raw intensity. The author was one of three brothers to be drafted into the Vietnam War and is the only survivor, one having committed suicide after his return to the US and the other disappeared and presumed dead. Despite the tragedy of family losses, Heinemann writes clearheadedly about his youthful experience in the steaming jungle and then about his warm meetings with his former enemies while touring the country on multiple trips in more recent times. His distinctive voice made such an impact on me that immediately upon finishing the book, I ordered the audio version and am enjoying reliving the experience of Heineman telling his bittersweet stories. Highly recommended in both book and audio format.

Book Description
John Nichols was raised by a family as American as the Stars and Stripes. He enjoyed a top-notch private school education and at 23 wrote a best-selling novel, The Sterile Cuckoo. At that point, he considered himself “a child blessed by the culture and fated for delirious success.” However, a trip to Guatemala derailed his golden-child existence and set him on a very different path toward social and environmental activism. This book charts Nichols’s rich and often tormented journey out of his sheltered middle-class life toward a belief in what he calls “liberation ecology.”

Praise for An American Child Supreme.......2001-08-07
LA Times 7/22/01 "Nichols is a God-forsaken mountain of American conflict, spriritual doubt, political duality and gender confusion. Like a pioneer, he keeps lighting out the territory ahead of the rest, gets lost in the desert and comes up the hills....This memoir, this credo, reveals a tender, overprotected rich kid growing up on 600 Long Island acres that had been in his family since the 1700s....Some time after college, his best friends took off for Guatemala, dragged him down for a visit and politicized the hell out of him. That was 1964, and he was 24. It was the best thing and the worst thing that could have happened to John Nichols."
Colorado Springs Independent 7/5/01 "Nichols is a masterful storyteller, full of the humor that springs from honesty, and this is one of those books you begin to wish would not end after you've read the first 10 pages."
Not enough story.......2001-07-28
The book delves into some very important issues, but skips over much of the biographical stuff and early memories I was hoping for. Over 50 pages of this already short book are just a listing of his previously published articles. In this case, the cover of the book is just a little bit misleading.
Customer Reviews:
Great plan to shape up.......2005-09-17
The book is great, and I have been following it's simple advice, and I am quickly having walking as part of my daily routine, no matter how short or long. It is a little dated, however (1991). They recommend you carry a quarter for the phone in case of emergencies. (ha-ha). I am enjoying the book.
For A Trim and Happy Personna........2005-05-06
This is a three-month day-to-day guide to help you lose weight (or you could try the South Beach diet, only this is healthier), strengthen and tone your muscles, be healtheir and stronger, and add years to your life as a consequence.
On day One, you start out with a ten-minute walk by merely walking five minutes, turning around and when you get home, your first workout will be complete. Pace yourself and go slow in the beginning. Try to increase in speed as it does help your heart to put a little 'good' strain on it. It takes discipline, perseverance and the desire to do something positive for your own health and well-being.
As you pick up the pace, it burns the calories and gives the heart a more complete workout. But do not overdo, or the stress can be harmful and cause heart palpatiations. Use good judgment; no one can feel how the exercise is affecting you but yourself.
By day 75, you are walking for 25 minutes. This book guides the participant through the routine and suggests that you find out what's right for you. Don't do anything in excess: exercise, eating, drinking, or trying to increase the walking speed too swiftly.
After you reach the three-month goal, and stuck with it, you will have realized the healthful benefits and 'rejuvenated spirit' that regular, daily activity brings to your life. I had my own personal trainer, Vic, for a month, and he taught me the leg and balance exercises I needed to personalize the routine. With this book, you move at your own pace but do try to keep up day-by-day. It will be worth all the effort and sweat in the end.
Mark Fenton has experience with the Olympic Training for Racewalking and is senior editor for 'Walking' magazine. Seth Bauer is 'Walking' editor-in-chief, and won a bronze medal for the 1988 rowing team and a former world-champion rower. They make a good team.
Best Fitness Book in the History of Time.......2005-03-31
This book outlines a very readable, very achievable program that is easy to follow, and yet feels challenging enough to feel effective. It begins assuming you have never tried an exercise program before, and that approach is helpful and always boosts self-esteem.
Personally, I found this book perfect for me. I am nineteen and at college. I had mononucleosis for over a month. While I was recovering, I found that all my muscles had become very weak. I needed something to strengthen me again, and I browsed many exercise books before choosing this one. It helped me build good, healthy habits, and I do not feel like the exercise program is consuming my life, which is a good thing, as I am always very busy. I completed the ninety days mentioned in the title, and already I feel much stronger and healthier than I did when I began. I have lost weight and I feel like dancing a lot more than I used to. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
motivational emphasis.......2003-06-19
Fundamentally a motivational book with the structure of a calendar. Designed to push and encourage for that 90 day period it takes to form a new better habit. Like walking. Like exercise.
Each day introduces a new idea, 2 pages per day of nice, simple, straightforward information. Not a hard read at all, but after it is over you learned something, but better yet may now find walking a habit.
Good beginner book.
Walking doesn't get any better then this!.......2000-11-10
This book has helped motivate and educate me on the aspects of fitness through walking. I highly suggest getting this book. This is the step into the right direction for a healthy long lasting life!

Came and went without making enough of a splash.......2007-03-13
I like this book. It's hard to explain, but what it amounts to is that it's a book on cooking for friends -- not so much entertaining, as just having friends over just for the hell of it, because it's better than eating alone. That's because many of the recipes come from the author's friends and family, a number of them coming from one single potluck dinner that the author held to help research the book. As a result, the book has a rather hip, decidedly urban-tribal feel to it that makes it rather different from more typical cookbooks designed for young people starting out in life.
The basics are decently well covered, and the food is decidedly contemporary -- a mix of chic and comfort food from multiple sources, with a touch of humor here and there. It's a little light on the vegetarian food, which may make it problematic for some circles of friends, but the bulk of what's in there should appeal to most tastes.
I found this book on a remainder table some years ago, which makes me think (as I said in the title) that it could have been more influential. The author's gone on to do other work on basic cooking, but this remains a good one to have on your bookshelf. If you see a copy in your local used bookstore, grab it.
Great for any cookbook junky!.......2005-11-19
I'm a cookbook junky. You'd think I was a chef but I'm not which is why I rely on cookbooks a lot. I bought this book because the inside flap totally describes me. But now I love this book and use it often because it's so easy to use. I almost always go to the "Before it grows mold" section so I can find a recipe to use something I already have. My fave recipe is the Hamburger recipe. Who knew something so simple could be SO YUMMY?? A couple of other family favorites are the Coconut Curry - deelish!! and the Honey-Garlic Chicken Wings which my husband ALWAYS makes and takes to potlucks and NEVER has any leftovers. I totally recommend it!
If you were only allowed one cookbook, this is the book........2002-04-23
As someone who purchased this book on a lark, then continued to buy it for all my gift-giving needs - including a wedding shower only a couple of weeks ago - as well as to use it periodically with fantastic results, I feel compelled to rave about it to anyone interested.
The recipes are easy to follow, the helpful advice and recipe cross references are just that, helpful, and the humourous introductions are truly enticing. This book intends to grab the reader by the collar, send him or her straight into the kitchen regardless of experience or trepidation and produce a delicious, mouthwatering, "you'll be everyone's best friend" dish every time.
What strikes me as invaluable about Cook Something and what separates it from all the other really good cookbooks on the shelf is the fact that it is a great collection of sound, tested recipes. It lists every single modern, homey, comfort food you would ever want in a well-rounded repertoire. For instance, the pancake recipe is the best. There is no reason to use any other. The light and flaky pastry crust has become my secret weapon and I use it everywhere, from tarts, to quiches, to pot pies, to dessert pizzas. You'll want to make each recipe as you read it, if only because you'll want to eat each dish that is listed. If you're nervous, stick to the recipe measurements. If you're daring, mix and match according to taste. The creamy mustard sauce is listed with salmon, but it works just as well with monkfish, scallops and pork loin. In any case, use this book as a reference guide, from checking the ideal temperature for roasting chicken to which ingredients go into hummus. Each recipe works well, so you'll not only build your culinary confidence but you'll be inspired to share your cooking with your friends.
Run, don't walk, to pick up your copy!
So Easy!.......2000-09-22
This is a really great cookbook for people who don't have the time to search out exotic ingredients or spend hours over the stove. Well laid out, fantastic food, and great hints and suggestions. I've been successful with every recipe that I tried from the book and have gotten rave reviews!
Shows how cooking can be both fun AND cool!.......2000-07-01
I bought this book because of the simple terminology and ease of navigation. I am new to cooking and felt this was the right book for me. And it was! The combination of simple, great recipes, lots of information for new cooks, and great photos makes this book a definite winner. It's fresh, cool, and hip. If you want to have FUN while cooking, get this book. You won't regret it.

Love, love, love this book!!.......2007-01-05
This book is the best in many ways. Spectacular designs, wonderfully written patterns, easy to follow schematics, special directions for special stitches. I love being able to make Aran style sweaters in crochet. The way the book is written it is also easy to use certain stitches and design my own sweater. Yes, you can do cables with crochet and they are beautiful!
wearable crocheted sweaters.......2006-08-29
This book and Lily Chin's upcoming book are the only crochet books I've ever found that have sweaters I would actually wear. Instructions are clear. I'm mostly a knitter who dabbles in crochet and I had no problem with these directions.
Easy and fun!.......2006-05-30
I absolutely love this book! I wanted to take a brake from knitting and knew this book would be just the right thing to use of some yarn that didn't work out for a different project. The patterns are timeless and the possibilities are endless with the wide variety of yarns available. I've made the cover sweater and the crewneck cardigan and I couldn't be happier with the results. Crochet looks so neat and tidy and the stitches give such wonderful texture. The instructions are very clear and the stitch patterns are easy to remember so you don't have to do much flipping around. This is a definite must for anyone looking to crochet sweaters.
Behind the Scenes.......2005-08-05
I have a confession: I developed and edited this book for ME! Usually, in the book business, products are developed with a target reader in mind. Well, I broke the rules when I asked the designer, Jane Snedden Peever, to create the garments for Crocheted Aran Sweaters. I *love* every sweater in this book! In fact, I've already made half of them, and have yarn picked out to stitch the rest.
Plus, I've used the stitch patterns, which are explained in the Pattern Work Encyclopedia, to make other sweaters for me and my husband, and an afghan for his office.
Every time I wear one of the sweaters from this book, at least a handful of people admire the work and marvel that they're crocheted rather than knit. The work looks very intense, but most of the garments are actually easy to stitch. Scottish Reel, for example, has blocks worked in a variety of stitches. It looks really hard. But it isn't, because you make rectangles, working one stitch pattern after another, and then sew the pieces together. I made my Scottish Reel sweater in three days (of course, this is part of my job, so I stitched for seven hours a day).
Another thing I like about the sweaters in this book is that practically any Aran-weight yarn can be used for any of the sweaters. You can walk into any yarn or craft shop and probably find a yarn that'll work. How cool is that?
I hope that you enjoy this book as much as I do.
Wonderful!!.......2004-01-01
What a wonderful book! The patterns are so amazing looking and so detailed. I can't wait to get started! After reading this book, I'd definitely recommend it.

Even better!.......2007-01-05
Well, I didn't think it could get any better, but this book does just that. More beautiful sweaters and again, the best instructions and schematics. If you love the first book, you will love this one also. Just not enough time for me to make all the beautiful sweaters.
Jane Snedden Peever is my favorite crochet designer.......2006-08-29
When I picked up this book I was surprised at the designs. They look great and straddle that fine line between conservative and boring. The yarns used are easy to find and make substitutions, and the directions are clear and easy to follow. Most of all I would wear any of the sweaters in the book. Can't wait to start crocheting more aran sweaters.
A wealth of more Aran-style designs with new stitch patterns.......2005-11-06
Jane Snedden Peever's More Crocheted Aran Sweaters provides a sequel to her popular Crocheted Aran Sweaters, providing a wealth of more Aran-style designs with new stitch patterns. Thirteen sweaters and vests are created with the look of knitting cables and moss stitches, plus some crochet patterns. The stitches guide helps make professional, polished results from even the most basic beginner efforts, while the styles are contemporary and appealing.
Aran Sweaters part 2.......2005-09-12
This is the second volume of crocheted Aran sweaters. The first offered a variety of patterns and styles that tempt crocheters of most skill levels to try an Aran sweater. This volume has more of a "traditional Aran" feel to it and seems to be for the more skilled crocheter, with the emphasis on cables and twists. The instructions are clear. Experienced crocheters looking for a traditional Aran look will find much to make in this book. Less experienced crocheters will be happier with the first volume.

Customer Reviews:
An impressive, scholarly, in-depth biography.......2002-05-16
Hugh Lane: 1875-1915 by journalist Robert O'Byrne is an impressive, scholarly, in-depth biography of British art dealer and patron Hugh Lane, who earned his way from poverty to fame and respect as a specialist in the great art of the old masters. His work in the creation of public art galleries in South Africa and the Municipal Gallery of Ireland earned him lasting prestige and some controversy, until his unfortunate death on the Lusitania when it was sunk by a Germans in 1915. Hugh Lane: 1875-1915 is the fascinating life-story presentation of a man who lived, worked, and devoted himself to the trading of art.

Product Description
This collection restores Jewish women to their rightful place in history. By sifting through historical reports, letters, memoirs, court papers, and other documents, the authors rediscover and rescue from obscurity the records of Jewish women from the Bible and Talmud, ancient Greece and Egypt, through medieval and Renaissance times, and into the modern period. The authors remind us of a heritage of Jewish women as property owners, traders, teachers, scribes, printers, poets, queens, commoners--proving Jewish women's presence as a vital force in the march of the Jewish people. This book is perfect for personal reading by adults, young adults, and reading groups, as well as a library reference. The book includes a bibliography, footnotes, and an index. Originally published in 1978 by Bloch Publishing, this 1990 edition includes timely revisions and additions by the authors.
