Candlestick Thanks.......2007-08-30
Fred did a great job describing our life that year. I can attest to the B-52 foul ups with TFA etc and know of the nav who inadvertently bailed out.I was eager to learn of the "Bat" training methods since ours were very informal. We did have a tactics book, but we were lucky to have very senior aircrew. Bottom line 4 missions and you go!Thanks again for the memories!Candlestick (Head Beagle)
The Blind Bat Cockpit.......2000-06-16
This book takes you to the cockpit of a C-130A flying Blind Bat flare missions. I thought I knew everything there was to know about Blind Bat, but this book proved me wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. If I had to make any complaint I wish it was much longer.

Book Description
Written but never published during his lifetime, this memoir of the founding father of computing is an indispensable primary source of information about Babbage's personal character and work. It brings to light his astonishingly wide range of interests, from mathematics to political economy and social reform, and dispels the myth of an "irascible" and "eccentric" personality, helping to clarify Babbage's position in the history of science.
Buxton's memoir was written between 1872 and 1880 and is volume 13 in the Charles Babbage Institute Reprint Series for the History of Computing.

Book Description
Until recently, bipolar disorders were almost never diagnosed in children and rarely recognized in adolescents, even though between 20 and 40 percent of the two million or more adults diagnosed with bipolar disorders in the United States experienced the onset of illness in their teen years or before. Psychiatrists now recognize that manic depression has frequently been misdiagnosed as ADHD (or oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, or depression). According to recent data, 23 percent of children currently diagnosed with ADHD will evenutally be diagnosed as having a bipolar disorder. As many as a million children in the US alone may have childhood-onset bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorders are different in children than in adults. There are some diagnostic criteria unique to children. Some reckless behavior is limited by being a child and being under adult control. Families and communities pay a heavy toll when this disorder is not recognized and treated. Suicide is a possible outcome, as are school failure, limited job prospects, legal difficulties, and hospitalizations. Understanding and recognizing the differences in the illness for children and adolescents is key for concerned parents and professionals. Bipolar Disorders covers the range of topics that parents need to know about in order to help their children:
- Description of the range of bipolar disorders
- Diagnostic criteria, current and proposed, including comparisons to common misdiagnoses
- Family life with bipolar disorders, including recognizing and preventing mood swings, safety, and support
- Medications, with special attention to the physiology and responses of children and adolescents
- Therapeutic interventions in various "talk therapies"
- Other interventions, such as improving sleep patterns, preventing seasonal mood swings, diet, and supplements
- Insurance issues
- school, including special education system and 504 Plans or EIPs
As author Mitzi Waltz notes, "With early intervention, the possibilities for these kids are limitless."
Customer Reviews:
An essential starting point..........2006-04-18
After more than a year of fear, confusion, anger and spousal disagreements regarding our child's behaviors, my wife and I separated. Then we found out that our 14-year-old is almost certainly suffering from bipolar disorder, not just depression (the first diagnosis) or anxiety (the second.) Now, from houses 25 miles apart, we are beginning the journey toward appropriate medications, appropriate school placement, and understanding. I bought this book a month ago, and it took the whole month to read it. At 400 pages, it is nothing if not comprehensive. And it is scary as hell, but comforting as well. Mitzi Waltz is herself the parent of a bipolar teen, and she has a great gift for translating medical and psychological jargon into plain English. If you are in the same boat as we are, or if you have a young relative recently diagnosed with BP, buy this volume right now. Buy several. The price is great for what you get, and I suspect you will be referring to it continuously for years. It is not focused exclusively on teenage patients, either. Kids as young as eight have now been diagnosed with this miserable brain chemistry imbalance, which seems to be a life-long condition once it manifests. The book creates much-needed sympathy for BP victims, whose attitudes, actions and unpredictable moods can be infuriating and can turn parents against each other as both try different approaches to keeping their child safe and stable and successful. So far, our path has included two psychiatrists, four different medications, a four-day stay for the daughter in a juvenile mental health center, two school systems and now a home-bound program, and much heartbreak, frustration, sadness and screaming. Mitzi's book is the single best tool I've found to help myself cope.
A Great Resource for Parents, Teachers and Doctors.......2000-03-12
Ms. Waltz has once again produced an excellent book that is clear and informative. In my practice of Psychiatry, I have found books like this are few and far between. I am using this book as a resource for all my Bipolar families. This book covers all topics related to Bipolar Disorder both esoteric and day-to-day living issues. If you're a parent or a loved one of a child (or adult)with Bipolar Disorder, read this. You will not go wrong. And after you're done, pass your copy onto your child's teacher or doctor. It will help you all get together on the same page. It's critical that our kids get the help they need. This book will teach you how best to advocate for your child.
This is an excellent guide for parents.......2000-01-25
Mitzi understands the relationship between parents and children who suffer from early-onset bipolar disorder. Her book addresses numerous issues that parents face on a day to day basis. She provides resources, support, and solutions. Truly an excellent book and one that all parents of children with bipolar disorder should keep at their fingers.
Thanks for writing this book!.......2000-01-23
We found this book to be very helpful us to further understand our daughter's recent diagnosis as Bipolar. We found the information to be well presented, and easy to understand. The section on schools was very informative.

Book Description
Meat is perhaps the single major food category for the low-carb eater. Consequently, vegetarians, who have traditionally depended on grains, pasta, bread, and other high-carb foods, have rarely attempted the low-carb diet. Food professional Sue Spitler and registered dietitian Linda Yoakam here offer new hope for the diet-conscious vegetarian by creating 150 easy, delicious entree recipes for people following the maintenance phase of a low-carb diet. The emphasis is on "safe and healthy" eating and, as always, good taste.
The authors first present a comprehensive introduction to low-carb dieting for vegetarians why it works, what to eat or avoid eating, what to expect as a realistic weight loss, and how to keep the weight off. Recipes include Eggplant and Zucchini Casserole, Quiche Lorraine, Artichoke Pie, Apricot Cheese Melt, Swiss Cheese and Spinach Pinwheels, Greek Lentil Stew, and over 100 more. Each recipe includes net carbs and complete nutrition data.
Customer Reviews:
LOW CARB, BUT HIGH FAT!.......2005-02-19
This review is aimed toward you health-conscious vegetarians out there. This cookbook is none other than the way vegetarians USED to eat: lots of eggs, dairy, and eggplant! To sum it up, I did an approximate breakdown of the 150 recipes: 12 contain eggplant; 20 mushrooms; 25 zucchini/squash; 21 beans; 23 eggs; 90 DAIRY! (We all know that the fats in dairy products are the WORST kind.) And for you carb counters there's a whopping 62 recipes containing Idaho potatoes, rice, pasta, or bread products! ("Toast" and tortillas are common meal accompaniments.)
We also see a tremendous amount of repeated ingredients here, and recipes that have run the vegetarian gamut for years - nothing new and innovative.
That said, there are a few "tasty" options, yet those don't justify buying this cookbook.

“No pot is left unturned, as the author features elegant examples of major glaze techniques.” —Booklist. “This well-illustrated handbook...covers glaze chemistry, application techniques, firing, and problem solving. Customer Reviews:
Awesome book!.......2005-11-11
The BEST book a beginner can get on glazing. Explains alot of the chemicals used in glazes and breaks it down for you (what they do etc). I would get this book before you get other glaze books.
the ceramic glaze handbook.......2005-09-30
Very informative for beginner even. Well explained and pleasant to read. Like it very much.
Only 1 remaining error on page 118.......2002-02-21
When I ordered the book, there was no reader's reviews. All three reviews appeared the next day after I ordered the book. I would not have purchased it if I had read those reviews. However, when the book arrived, I checked it against the corrections [website] and found that all but one error have been corrected (foot note for middle picture on page 118). There is no indication that the book in my hands is a second printing.
This book is well illustrated and extremely well organized for easy comprehension. The pictures of the test tiles for major colorants laid out in a modified 2 x Y factorial design is extremely informative. The format of having one illustration by each formula is the most inspiring and useful way of presenting the formulae. Get this book and Hopper's the Ceramic Spectrum if you want to start formulating your own glazes.
The Ceramic Glaze Handbook.......2002-02-20
Our ceramics instructor and I (perennial student) found this book in a local library and our class loves it. We participate in a potter's guild situation, not an academic fine arts class, so the clear explanations in this book by Burleson help cut through the haze of what glazes are made of, how to take care of them, and how to experiment with them. We can't wait to get started.
Ok book...but...has errors.......2002-02-15
This is a decent book, but...there are a number of errors in it. Be sure and get the corrections from the publisher at:
http://mercury.larkbooks.com/glaze/correct.pdf
http://mercury.larkbooks.com/glaze/index.pdf
Other than that, it is a good book on glaze materials, mixing, and application. Includes a variety of recipies for use at various cone temps.
Updated info...the second printing has corrected the errors that I mentioned above.

Product Description
In the thirty years since L. S. Lowry's death several items have come into the public domain - including collections of private letters, now housed in the archives of "The Lowry", the millennium arts centre on the banks of the Irwell, which were made available to the author. Extracts from these will be included in her new biography to give added insight to the man. Illustrations, apart from the obvious inclusion of a selection of paintings and drawings (many of which have come to light since his death), will include facsimile reproductions of major exhibition catalogues. New in this biography: In view of the fact that in 1951 two psychiatrists offered him sight of a medical paper they had written on his industrial landscapes for the Journal of Mental Science, some of his so-called 'hidden' works will be shown to an eminent psychiatrist for a modern view.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Patricia Volk's enchanting memoir nails both 20th-century American life and the glorious eccentricities of her relatives with the gift for vivid detail of a fiction writer. (After all, she's published one novel and two short-story collections.) "Our hallway was the color of ballpark mustard. The living room was cocoa, my mother's wall-to-wall, iceberg green," she tells us. Volk begins with her adored immediate family: charismatic father, hypercritical but loving mother ("Mom made me, and now she will make me better"), and older sister Jo Ann, best friend and occasional mortal enemy. But they're only the beginning, just as the garment-district restaurant that rules her father's life is only one of the family achievements. Great-grandfather Sussman brought pastrami to the New World. Grandfather Jake, a demolition expert, was profiled in The New Yorker. "Everybody did one thing better than anybody else. Aunt Gertie sang the works of Victor Herbert. Aunt Ruthie mamboed. Granny Ethel braked with such finesse it was impossible to tell the moment the car went from moving to a stop." Of course, perennially negative Aunt Lil embroidered a pillow with the motto "I've Never Forgotten a Rotten Thing Anyone Has Done to Me"--but maybe she was embittered by the fact that Uncle Al slept with her for 11 years then refused to marry her because she wasn't a virgin. (She sent out wedding invitations anyway, and he fell in line.) All these great stories are arranged along a casual chronological arc ("from Sussman Volk in 1888 to Cecil Volk in 1988"), but nothing is ever really finished. Her father closes Morgen's in Manhattan; her sister's husband opens a trendy food shop in Florida. "We're still feeding people," Volk asserts. Readers will find her prose as delicious as family housekeeper Mattie's chocolate cake. Recipes included. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
In a restaurant family, you’re never just hungry—you’re starving to death. And you’re never full—you’re stuffed.
Patricia Volk’s family is as American (background: Austrian-Jewish) as “Rhapsody in Blue.” They came to these shores determined to make their mark; each of them is a piquant morsel of history. Great-grandfather Sussman Volk brought pastrami to the New World. Grandfather Jacob was known as “the Most Destructive Force on Wall Street” and was memorialized by E. B. White as “the greatest wrecker of all time” for his innovative method of demolition. Uncle Albert was the first man to stir scallions into cream cheese. The last of Grandfather Herman Morgen’s fourteen restaurants was a famous garment center hangout. One grandmother won the 1916 trophy for “Best Legs in Atlantic City.” The other was a three-hundred-pound calendar girl. Ms. Volk’s handsome, demanding restaurateur father invented the Six-color Retractable Pen and Pencil Set and the Double-sided Cigarette Lighter (so you never have to worry which end is up). For three generations, just about every Volk and Morgen (with the exception of Uncle Al, who had an eleven-year affair with Aunt Lil and then refused to marry her because she wasn’t a virgin) has, no matter what the circumstances, exhibited a terrifyingly positive attitude. With a cosmic disdain for the status quo, all of them—the tyrants, do-gooders, lovers, martyrs, and fakes—lived at full tilt.
Stuffed is a wildly funny yet unsparing look at how families work.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent "memoir".......2007-06-21
I bought this after reading Volk's newly-published novel, which I also enjoyed. Good writing through-out this book. I just ordered the audio version.
Overlooked gem in the gastronomy genre.......2007-02-23
In the past several years, food writing has mushroomed, and I believe the bubble is about to burst. I came across this book in a local charity shop, the kind patronized by well-heeled and well-read donors. This book is well-written, humorous, full of family anecdotes, and also contains memorable quotes about the Volk family's advice on living a good and full life. The family photographs are gorgeous, to put it in Volk's terminology. I give it 5 stars when considering it within the gastro genre. Forget Ruth Reichl's multi-volume in-progress autobiography. This is food lit meets Judaica, and it is a worthwhile read.
stuffed with more than food.......2006-11-10
This book had a lot of heart and was stuffed with so much more than food, recipes, and stories about the restaurant. Patricia Volk writes lovingly and insightfully about her family -- I so enjoyed this. See the penultimate chapter's closing thoughts for a great piece about family.
Easy and Enjoyable Read........2006-10-29
I loved this book, from beginning to end.
I related to it all. It turned out in the end,
that I frequent the author's, sisters business
here in South Florida, on a regular basis. It figures!

Stuffed Full of Memories.......2006-08-06
Patricia Volk's memoir of her family and its 100-year history in the restaurant business is as much a history of New York as it is a recounting of her relatives. Touching, funny, sad, quirky -- this book has it all. Volk is a talented writer with the ability to create a vivid character on the page. I finished this book wishing I'd been part of their clan.
