Fascinating Life of Mystical Visionary.......2007-07-03

Swedenborg is thoroughly worth studying, especially if you have interest in mystical Christianity, or mystic visionaries, such as Ibn Arabi, William Blake, Rudolph Steiner, Paramsahamsa Yogananda, and Shihab al-Din Suhrawardi. His Life story is amazing and inspiring and he is one of the "biggies". Buy this book, you won't regret it!

i bought this book for a patient who was having a difficult time working through an accident a year earlier. i've since given or loaned this book out to nearly a dozen others. ms. heller helps the reader feel, well, not alone. he makes all those things we feel as strange to be seen as normal reactions to a non-normal, trauma. he brings the reader in, writing clearly and effectively motivating us, encouraging us to work on ourselves and begin facing life and our fears. it is written very practically offering many excellent, well-founded, effective solutions. absolutely worth the price and probably more!

2 books should be bought.......2005-07-30

This book was a great help after my accident and I also purchased Car Accident Secrets from Amazon. Both books helped me to heal my mind and my wallet. This book helped me around the problems I was having in dealing with my accident. The other book that I purchased helped me to fight for my rights without a lawyer and settle my claim for a large sum. I am really blessed to have come across both of these books on Amazon.

We found this book extremely useful in a practical day-to-day manner. Offering clear and direct instructions on what to do, and when and how to do it, Crash Course leads one through the healing process in a way never available to the public before. The simplicity and yet power of this book, and its ability to help one enact positive (and not re-traumatizing) change makes it a treasure for anyone who has been in an automobile accident.

This book is very well written and informative for helping anyone recovering from an auto accident. There are lots of useful examples and practical exercises for people to refer to. I've given Crash Course to several of my friends and they were able to use it effectively to support their healing process. I recommend it to anyone suffering from any type of trauma.

Not 100% Authentic, But Very Good.......2007-10-01

This cookbook is frequently used in my kitchen. I've probably attempted about 1/2 the recipes in the book over the past 7 or more years. Whereas a lot of these dishes do come with Kheo's personal (Lao) touches, these recipes are very good. Skip the garnish section. Quality food doesn't need a carrot rose in order to taste great.

Keo's cookbook.......2006-10-23

is more about Brand (Keo's) commercialization, placement and reinforcement than cooking.

I found the recipe's un-authentic, over-prepared and stunningly presented in pictures. None of this was useful in building my skill in the cooking of authentic Thai dishes.

Worse, I still envy the beautiful dish presentations that are beyond my resources to plate to the family table.

An excellent collection of Classic Thai Recipes.......2006-07-12

This book has been in our house library of cookbooks since its first release in 1986. What seemed like incredibly exotic recipes at the time have become much more commonplace as Thai restaurants spread and thrive: Chicken with Cashew Nuts, Musamun Curry, Pad Thai, etc. While not a lot of historical or regional background information is presented, for those wanting to cook favorite Thai dishes at home this is quite a useful collection. Most dishes are not that complicated to prepare as long as all of the ingredients have been assembled--and unlike at a restaurant, one is able to control the spiciness of the dishes exactly to one's taste.

The book is beautifully photographed and delightful to browse through. I would recommend it to most cooking enthusiasts looking for a good overview of Thai cuisine that can be prepared at home.

Great Recipes - Little Background.......2002-02-19

This book would be an excellent addition to the library of an intermediate to advanced Thai chef. Keo's Thai Cuisine is an wonderful resource and contains many excellent recipes. However, it's main draw back is that it provides little cultural context for these recipes. Thus, the book is more or less a "recipe catalog" which would make it difficult for a beginner to get this book and "run with it." I know from experience. This was the first book I bought dealing with Thai cooking. I selected Keo's Thai Cuisine because it was physically very attractive (lots of beautiful color photographs are included) and because it contained many of the recipes I was interested in making. Previously, I had extensive background in cooking Japanese and Chinese cuisine, and I expected that it would be very easy for me to learn Thai. However, although I was successfully able to copy some of the easier recipes, I found myself hard pressed to make some of the more advanced recipes. The problem was that I was unfamiliar with many of the ingredients. Although a short (5 page) glossary is included that lists most Thai ingredients, many of the ingredients go by multiple names (which were not included) which made it difficult for me to find the supplies I needed. After I had read additional books and had about 3 months experience cooking basic Thai foods, I had the background necessary to make the most of the recipes in Keo's. Now Keo's is one of my favorite cookbooks.

Overall, the book contains 96 total recipes, 51 of which are entree-like, all of which are delicious. Color photographs are included for most dishes, although some are somewhat stylized. Although all of the recipes I have tried have been excellent, I have had a very hard time making my dishes look like the photographs. This is a minor point (because they taste great), but I usually don't have this trouble with other cookbooks, and it has always left me wondering if I'm doing things "right," or if the photographs were made using a different recipe.

The best Thai food, the simplest recipes.......2001-06-12

This is unequivocally the best Thai cookbook you could buy. While in Hawaii I ate at Keo's restaurant and had what was some of the finest Thai food I've ever eaten. I purchased his book at the restaurant as I wasn't thrilled with the other Thai cookbooks I had, which had a tendency to overcomplicate recipes. I wasn't sure this would be better because of the gorgeous photos and complexity of taste in his dishes. However, after using the book and trying a few recipes it became apparent that not only are Keo's recipes better than those in other books, but they are also far simpler to make! Better food, easier to make - a simple equation and one well worth the investment. The book itself is gorgeous with great photos and nice layout, but the real payoff is in Keo's simple and extremely delicious recipes. I find myself constantly looking back at the pages when making a dish and saying to myself "That's it? I'm not missing anything? That's too easy...."

Instant Classic - just add water!.......2003-09-03

Montroll does it again. This book is full of North American animals (and a couple plants) that are both fun to make, and lifelike (especially wet-folded). The book has a few decent models for all difficulty levels, with the average model probably somewhere between a 2 or 3 star. This book makes use of a few inside-out folded models (that is, the white vs. color plays a key part in the models design (snowy owl, raccoon)). I would recommend this book to all fans of origami, whether an expert or a beginning for some truly unique models. (One of my favorites is the prickly pear cactus, which is great for a wide variety of scenes).

Challanging and Rewarding.......2001-01-11

North American Animals in Origami is one of my favorites. While most of the models took me a few stabs at the results are very rewarding. Montroll's style and clearly defined directions make his models a joy and challenge to fold. Here is the following models in "North American Animals in Origami": Duck, Swan, Heron, Roadrunner, Saguaro Cactus, Prickly-Pear Cactus, Jack Rabbit, Mouse, Armadillo, Bald Eagle, Bighorn Sheep, Bobcat, Great Horned Owl, Quail, Pheasant, Squirrel, Beaver, Black Bear, Coyote, Bison, Raccoon, Deer, Snowy Owl, Musk Ox, and Moose.

Some pearls in it.......1999-09-15

In fact I give this book 4.5 stars. For most experienced folders, the first half models of this book cannot satisfy them. And along the rapid development of origami science these days, this book seems staying in the past time. However, there are some true gems in it. I like Montroll's Moose very much.(I think it is the best moose design so far) And I very much like the models contributed by Japenese origami nova Fumiaki Kawabata (this book is first published in 1995, and now in 1999 he is really a superstar in origami world).

Not What You May Be Expecting.......2005-07-28

As a Westerner who has studied Buddhism I was very interested in what this book could offer. I was immeadiatley not impressed with the enormous margins in the book, which is already on the small side of things, to compensate for a lack of material. The book had some good things to offer, like questions to ask you kids to initiate conversation about their spiritual beliefs and whatnot. But the bulk of the book left me questioning how much the writer understands Buddhism and applies it to his own life.

There were red flags that stood out, such as not apologizing to your children should you take out your bad day on them because it will make them feel like they have power. Um, excuse me? Where's the compassion in that?

There are strange ideas and application of Buddhism sprinkled throughout, such as how non-attachment helped the writer cope with the Chicago Cubs being such a bad team (and the significance of the Cubs in the first place is..?).

This book also attempts to pretend that it can apply to people of all faiths, but some of the elements of Buddihsm and stories that he uses would out right contridict with the beliefs of other major faiths and would possibly offend those readers.

Overall, some of the questions in it are thought provoking, but nothing that couldn't be figured out from brainstorming with other parents and just doing some thinking on your own. To someone who is new to Eastern thought there could be some good things in this, but I was greatly disappointed.

Fabulous Storytelling!.......2000-11-14

Stephens does a marvelous job of opening your eyes to see in a new light the old Bible stories we grew up with. His language is lyrical, as if recounting old legends. You will find this book fascinating. You will find yourself looking at God in different ways at each different point in this chronicle of mankind, and at each point, you will be in awe of a God who does not let go. Fall in love with Him all over again when you read these timeless stories! You will discover as Stephens did, God's countless names as terms of endearment.

the writing i cannot comment on, but as a picture book of dores work, i found it dissapointing. not to say that there arent plenty of illustrations, but that the printing quality is poor on many of them, and there isnt a single color reproduction of any of his paintings.

The best Dore Resource Available.......2000-11-13

The first serious attempt at an English Language biography of Gustave Dore for over a century, and the only significant biography available in any language.

In the 19C Dore was unchallenged as the world's greatest illustrator. He also was one of the pioneers of the comic strip & an incisive caricaturist. The English and Americans saw him as one of the worlds great painters. And he created some beautiful sculptures. Ahead of his time, artists from Van Gogh and Picasso to Henry Irving and Cecil B Demille were influenced by him.

Yet 100 years later he is all but forgotten - despite the fact that his art is all around us.

In Adrift, Dan Malan explores the history of the rise & disappearance of Dore. The approach is both scholarly and relaxed: lots of detail without the customary "art critic" hyperbole. The opponents of Dore are given their voice, but it is difficult for the reader not to be drawn to this fascinating and enigmatic artist.

The book is comprehensively illustrated with a wide variety of Dore's works, and includes a very detailed catalogue and bibliography. There is also an invaluable price guide to Dore's major works.

Anyone who has read other Dore bios (Gosling, Richardson) will quickly realise how lazy and incomplete these efforts were.

And anyone who has bought any of the Dover Dore books will be amazed at how these books are but the tip of the iceberg.

Surprisingly, this book has not been published by a major publishing company. ...

Highly recommended. Hopefully other authors will continue Malan's efforts to return Dore to his rightful place in the history of art.

Many photos and detailed information about his works, including dates aswell as info about multiple printings. He even lists what some of the books were selling for when they were first printed! A must have if you want more info on Dore'

A fantastic journey.......2006-05-21

This is a must read for all people who struggle with religion and have to deal with the "fakers" who give religion a bad name.
You don't have to be Jewish to understand Neal's journey back to the fold.

In my personal life, my wife and I struggle with those who forget what religion means. Karlen sums it all up with the "It's not Judaism that I don't like; it's the Jews." He follows up with his quest to me a "mentsch," which is Yiddish for an upstanding person. My wife and I couldn't agree more.

We live in a world today where many of us have lost our moral compass. We judge wach other by what neighborhood they live in, the clothes on their backs, the car they drive and where they send their kids to school or camp. What happened to family values? Respect for our fellow man? Or the power of silence - when we should just shut up.

There's a little bit of Neal's Yiddishe Hartz (Jewish heart) in all of us. This should be a must read for all those trying to keep up with the Jones, Schwartzes, etc.

I agree in particular with what reviewer Adamchik aready stated about this book. The book would be more understandable to me if Karlen came from a less knowledgeable background. In fact, it's difficult to ascertain whether his background is Orthodox, Conservative, or somewhere inbetween. While there are people who were raised Orthodox who go "off the derech", that doesn't totally appear to be the case here. And then, Rabbi Friedman takes over the story. I've had the priviledge of hearing him speak - he is awesome, even if I'm not personally into Lubavitch. But all in all, the book seems a bit directionless, even if it is painful/funny at times.

This is an honest and moving account of a man's journey away from and back to his Jewish roots. It's a story of redemption, and of the restoration of a father-son relationship.

You don't need to be Jewish (or speak Yiddish) to enjoy this book. In fact, gentiles may find that this book helps them understand some of the challenges and contradictions faced by modern Jews who seek to connect with their ancient faith.

Karlen's very conversational writing style makes this book an easy read. His own humor, plus one-liners borrowed from Henny Youngman and Steven Wright, provide comic relief despite the very serious issues addressed in this book.

At the end of the book I found myself wishing there were just a few more chapters (and perhaps a soundtrack album so we could hear this "nigguns" mentioned in the book). This is the story of a journey that seems to end before the final destination has been reached. Perhaps that's because the journey continues. But while it may seem a little unfinished, it is nonetheless a very satisfying book.

I read the book. I kept thinking throughout, this guy is lonely, single, in his 40's, redeeming himself in the hope of finding a nice jewish wife.

I don't really believe most of his account.

A truly exceptional page turner. Not only is the book light and humorous, but it also has a more deep level with lessons for us all. I highly recommend this faced paced and easy reading story to members of all faiths.
