Hotelier and Spy.......2006-11-10

A great read about a remarkable man. I knew Brandy personally and this book doesn't give him true justice but does tell the story of his amazing life. A must read for those in the hotel industry or those that have ever stayed at Las Brisas. The book covers his military days thru to his retirement ,as a spy and hotelier extrodinaire ,in the hills above Acapulco. Buy it and you won't have a regret only perhaps your life could have been as fullfilling and adventurous.

Amazing encounter.......2001-04-29

I met Colonel Frank Brandstetter in Omaha beach, Normandy-France, late 70's. Fantastic personality, true humanity, a great lesson of life at a time when the Cold War was not over yet.

I was assigned to Ste.Mere Eglise by the Commander of the 32nd Company Division, during my national service after finishing the military academy (reserved officers). Mission was to be the "ordonnance" of this VIP for the D-Day ceremonies. There were also exhausted officers just back from Vietnam. We tried our best to take care of all these great people, and shared a lot of good and intense moments during the ceremonies.

I was early 20, he was soon 70 and Frank told me a lot about the war and the peace, about the life and death, about mission and respect, and how to be able to "carry on" day after day.

I remember his comments about General Ridgway, about Europe and USA, about horrors of war and hate but he mostly talked, free, about peace and how to maintain the peace and build the future. It was really an experience! God, he spoke so many languages in the same time. The whole crowd around was impressed, so was I. Well, I saw him with my eyes and heard with my own ears how he had managed and practice the talents he had during WW2 and after that, in Europe.

If one of the most important thing in life, for all of us, is to know what are the good things we leave behind us; well, i guess that Frank could teach a young man and a few other guys at an important time in their lives, how to manage and forecast the rest of their lives; and he did it well. I have not met Frank again, and I often thought about Accapulco and "Brandy" in his colourful Jeep riding in the jungle around the resort, opened to the astronauts back on earth, all of them firmly standing on the world again.

I never forgot his fascinating character. He achieved a hell of a job as an Officer who had a tough life, as a man, and as a friend.

Later on, my work drove me and my wife to work in the Far-East, very closed from a place where General Ridgway took over the work of an other historical icone, Doug. Mc Arthur. And I often remembered, on assigments for my media, a couple of lessons Frank Brandstetter tought to me.

I really think the writers did an extraordinary and fascinating book, and I thank them from the bottom of my heart for that amazing encounter, now presented and shared with people. Bravo ! Joel Legendre

A Living Hero.......2000-05-10

As a baby boomer, the only personal connection I had with WWII, was that my father worked as a chemist on the Manhattan Project in Washington State.

So when a friend sent me a copy of Brandy: Our Man in Acapulco: The Life and Times of Colonel Frank M. Brandstetter, I thought what does this book have to do with my life?

The answer is everything. The authors of this compelling historical memoir, Dominic Monetta and Rodney Carlisle, brought WWII and the Cold War to life for me.

Colonel Brandstetter's life reads like a Hollywood screenplay. this book has everything fiction has: espionage, movie stars, strong American values, heroic rescues and escapes. It is refreshing to know, in a world where sports figures are amongst the few heroes our young people admire, that there is a living war hero who saved hundreds and hundreds of lives as a human intelligence officer - a humble man with the courage and passion to make a difference.

I would urge teachers to request Brandy: Our Man in Acapulco as required reading in high schools around the country.

Brandy's Life Would Make a Wonderful Novel.......2000-02-07

Colonel Frank Brandstetter obviously led a fascinating life. The words, "officer, gentleman and scholar," come to mind as he seems to embody all those qualities. He was also a visionary in the world of hotel managment--many of the practices Brandy instituted are now standard operating procedures in the hotel business.

Brandy was obviously a risk-taker--but risk-takers also make mistakes, learn from those mistakes, and come up with better ideas. I wish the author had mentioned which ideas had failed--it would have presented a more in-depth and complex portrait of Col. Brandstetter. There was also very little personal information about Brandstetter in the book. A man is more than the sum total of his accomplisments.

In the long-run, I think a novel based on Col. Brandstetter's life would make a fascinating read. He led a life of intrigue, daring, and heroic and accomplished endeavors and seems to have remained a gentleman throughout--the kind of hero we like to see in a novel.

Real life is better than fiction. Frank Brandstetter is one of those who really made things happen...where ever he was. This book tells his story in unflowery language, and yet it reads like a movie. His life has touched so many highlights of the 20th century.

His story is also a guide to how to live life honorably. He is guided by ideals, philosophy and values that are clear and relatively simple. Today, we are reluctant to believe that life can be lived well and honorably when based on such simplicity. Brandy's sense of honor is palpable. This creed has been tested greatly. superb text, not for beginners.......2004-08-21

Before you purchase this or any other OCT, consider carefully whether you expect to need commentary or a teacher's assistance. For Vergil, if either of these is the case, Pharr's reasonably priced Aeneid 1-6 may be ideal--or at least more appropriate than the bare Latin text with notes on the manuscript tradition, which is all you will find in oxford's edition. Pharr's ample gloss and commentary make his Aeneid the best text for beginning/intermediate students of latin. For other Virgil texts, there are innumerable student editions of varying quality. Instead of wading through these, find a professor of the classics or a teacher of classical languages who will wouldn't mind offering his/her guidance.

An Excellent Edition.......2000-04-11

It would, of course, be folly of the highest order to give a critique of the Aeneid itself; by the number of years through which it has survived alone, it is justified. It is an unquestionable literary achievement, indeed, a monument of Western Civilization. This edition is a superb one for the student of Latin, although the light hearted should beware: As one might expect from the Oxford Classical Texts, even the introduction is in Latin. Annotations abound, but they concern themselves with matters of manuscript conflicts. The text itself appears to be flawless and is very readable. Moreover, for 21 dolloars this edition is an absolute bargain. I have never seen a complete Virgil for such an astounding price. (The Loeb edition is close, but one must purchase several volumes to equal the contents of this single volume, and the Loeb forces a distracting English translation upon the reader.) In short, this small, attractive book is the ideal Vergil for students on any budget.

Excellent for the Greek Scholars.......2005-10-14

Now, as someone with a Greek vocabulary of approximately 30 words, I find that this is a very intimidating book. All of the notes are in Latin, which I understand moderately well, and all of the text is in Greek, which I don't. Additionally, the font this book is typed in maked lower case theta look slightly like an upside-down delta until I realized what it actually was.

But, for someone with a high degree of confidence in Greek and Latin, this is an excellent text. It doesn't have unnecessary notes lining the bottoms of every page (As far as I can tell, they're just variants that different editors or copyists have published.)Other than the business with theta and possibly an issue with digammas (I haven't come across any yet, so I can't be sure), the text is clear and easy to read, with plenty of punctuation.

I give this two thumbs up, and will probably purchase a copy for myself once I've got more experience with the language.

I read this after reading Naomi Ragen's fictionalized version of Dona Gracia's life, The Ghost of Hannah Mendes. The two books are complementary, as Ragen's romantic treatment of Dona Gracia's life adds depth (though not necessarily historicity) to the relatively few facts about her that we actually know and that Roth recounts.

Roth writes in the style of an old-school historian, trying to weave a human tale from sometimes fragmentary records. The footnotes, in which he points out his disagreement with other historians of the Inquisition and of the converso Jews, and sometimes his own changes of mind about the sequence of events, are perhaps the most fascinating part of the book. He is also a master at historical detective work, getting the most he can from the documents available.

At bottom, however, we don't know all that much about Dona Gracia, so Roth's extravagant claims that she was the most important Jewish woman in a millennium or more do not quite ring true. Were it not for that consideration, I would have given this fascinating monograph five stars.

duller than I thought it would be.......2006-07-11

Certainly, the title character must have led an interesting life. But I found this book less interesting than I had hoped, just a listing of one event after another. However, I did get some sense of how difficult the lives of Jews were in Southern Europe; even Iberian Jews who converted to Christianity were never safe from Christians who were happy to accuse them of backsliding in order to have an excuse to confiscate their property.

The only way to avoid this problem was to move (as Dona Gracia did) to Muslim lands, because the Ottoman Empire was much less anti-Semitic than most Christian governments. In fact, the Ottoman Empire actually protected Jews in Christian Europe by insisting on decent treatment of Jews with ties to the Empire. One lesson of this book is that Jews never have permanent allies or permanent enemies, only permanent interests.

This is the biography of Dona Gracia, a Jewish woman who lived in the 15th century and whose personality is characterized by intelligence, shrewdness, generosity, and religious devotion. Born in Spain, she went to Portugal in 1492, following the expulsion of the Jews. In Portugal she was forcibly converted to Christianity and became one amongst many "New Christians," "Marranos," or "Conversos." At the age of 18 she married Francisco Mendes, the richest merchant in Lisbon at that time. Seven years later she became a widow and successfully took over her husband's business. Determined to reach Turkey where under the protection of the Ottoman Empire she would be able to profess her faith freely, she embarked on a long journey, which took 17 years. This journey took her to London, Antwerp, Lyon, Venice, Ferrara, Ancona, Ragusa, Salonika and finally Constantinople. Throughout her perils she proved to be highly courageous and an excellent businesswoman. She used her wealth and contacts to help Jews escape the Inquisiton, became the self-appointed protector of the conversos, built houses of prayer and teaching, devoted herself to good works, and was know as "the heart of her people."

There are two importnat factors in the history of Dona Gracia: first, she represents one of the rare examples of fight against repression to the Jews by the use of commercial tactics (the Ancona Boycott), and the first to establish a Jewish colony in Paletine (Tiberias), a self-sustaining settlement for Jews and conversos from an hostile Europe.

The author Cecil Roth is a well-known historian. He clearly demonstrates his admiration for Dona Gracia, his praises are many, and openly admits to the fact that he has not been able to find any historical proof to the contrary. Despite this embellishment, Dona Gracia remains a distant character, she carries an aura of mystery which contributes to her "divinity." Had the Jewish faith room for "canonization" Dona Gracia would certainly be a downright candidate. Her name stands amongst famous Jewish women, and as her contemporary the author Samuel Usque says, "she is much a heroine as Miriam, Deborah, and Judith."

This novel was amazing in detail and mesmorizing in content. It was well researched! I would recommend this to anyone who loves romance, intrigue, deceit and history.
