        Book Description

Although during his lifetime the bulk of his work went unpublished, Renaissance scholar Thomas Harriot is now recognized as a major contributor to many fields of learning, such as mathematics, astronomy, and botany. Harriot's theories, inventions, and discoveries were as groundbreaking as they were controversial. From his daring exploration of the New World to his scientific findings on subjects as diverse as alchemy and the moons of Jupiter, Harriot's accomplishments reflect the endless curiosity of a remarkable mind. The author draws on the diary entries of Harriot's close friend, Thomas Buckner, and Harriot's own maps, diagrams, and handwritten notes, to capture the authentic flavor of an extraordinary time, as well as the enigmatic character of a genius. Book Description

'The Greate Invention of Algebra' casts new light on the work of Thomas Harriot (c.1560-1621), an innovative thinker and practitioner in several branches of the mathematical sciences, including navigation, astronomy, optics, geometry, and algebra. Although on his death Harriot left behind over four thousand manuscript sheets, much of his work remains unpublished. This book focuses on one hundred and forty of Harriot's manuscript pages, those concerned with the structure and solution of equations. The original material has been carefully ordered, translated, and annotated to provide the first complete edition of his work on this subject, and an extended introduction provides the reader with a lucid background to the work and explains its contents. Illustrations from the manuscripts provide fascinating reference material. The appendix discusses correlations between Harriot's manuscripts and the texts of his contemporaries Viete, Warner, and Torporley. The clear and concise exposition makes this an excellent reference volume for historians of mathematics and those interested in the history of science. This is an important new resource for understanding the development of algebra in seventeenth-century England.

                      Book Description

Thomas Harriot's "Artis analyticae praxis" is an essential work in the history of algebra. To some extent it is a development work of Viete, who was among the first to use literal symbols to stand for known and unknown quantities. But it was Harriot who took the crucial step of creating an entirely symbolic algebra, so that reasoning could be reduced to a quasi-mechanical manipulation of symbols. Although his algebra was still limited in scope (he insisted. for example, on strict homogeneity, so only terms of the same powers could be added or equated to one another), it is recognizably modern. Although Harriot's book was highly influential in the development of analysis in England before Newton, it has recently become clear that the posthumously published Praxis contains only an incomplete account of Harriot's achievement: his editor substantially rearranged the work before publishing it, and omitted sections that were apparently beyond his comprehension, such as negative and complex roots of equations. The commentary included with the translation attempts to restore the Praxis to the state of Harriot's draft. Basing their work on manuscripts in the British Library, Pentworth House, and Lambeth Palace, the commentary contains some of Harriot's most novel and advanced mathematics, very little of which has been published in the past. It will provide the basis for a reassessment of the development of algebra.

The present work is the first ever English translation of the original text of Thomas Harriot’s Artis Analyticae Praxis, first published in 1631 in Latin. Thomas Harriot’s Praxis is an essential work in the history of algebra. Even though Harriot’s contemporary, Viete, was among the first to use literal symbols to stand for known and unknown quantities, it was Harriott who took the crucial step of creating an entirely symbolic algebra. This allowed reasoning to be reduced to a quasi-mechanical manipulation of symbols. Although Harriot’s algebra was still limited in scope (he insisted, for example, on strict homogeneity, so only terms of the same powers could be added or equated to one another), it is recognizably modern.

While Harriot’s book was highly influential in the development of analysis in England before Newton, it has recently become clear that the posthumously published Praxis contains only an incomplete account of Harriot’s achievement: his editor substantially rearranged the work before publishing it, and omitted sections that were apparently beyond comprehension, such as negative and complex roots of equations.

The commentary included with this translation relates the contents of the Praxis to the corresponding pages in his manuscript papers, which enables much of Harriot's most novel and advanced mathematics to be explored. This publication will become an important contribution to the history of mathematics, and it will provide the basis for a reassessment of the development of algebra.

                        Customer Reviews:

                        4 out of 5 stars Book interesting.......2007-05-15

While the book made for interesting reading (I have a 15 month son), I did not like how inflexible it came across. For example, it would say at 8 months, your baby should be doing this...If my child weren't doing whatever it was at that exact time, and I didn't know better, the book would have scared the crap out of me, making me think something was horribly wrong with my child. Now I have not read the entire book, as I am reading it as my child grows up.

5 out of 5 stars A "must have" for every parent.......2006-02-08

"Your Child" truly is an essential for every home. Although written by members of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, it's parent friendly to read!

Age groups are broken down in each chapter, which I found helpful to find and very easy to use for my family.

The information I obtained and utilized was priceless. I highly recommend this book.

Like so many other realms, this book lumps children who are not babies or toddlers into a huge group that includes preteens. If you have a baby, fine. Otherwise, find another more focused book for your 6 to 12 year old.

Sorry I wasted my money. I am often left unanswered.

Second in the Monday-to-Friday series, here's a pasta book with a difference. For two-worker families, single parents, and other busy people, Ms. Urvater marries the innovative Monday-to-Friday pantry-based approach with everyone's favorite food, pasta. The result is a guide to making over 175 delicious pasta dishes in roughly the time it takes to boil a pot of water. The range of recipes includes soup (Comforting Pasta Fagioli), seafood (Scallops Casino with Bowties), meat (Beef and Glass Noodles, Chic Chorizo), and salad (Couscous and Lentil Salad, Rotelle a la Greek Salad). Monday-to-Friday and the noodle: It's as perfect a match as spaghetti and meatballs.

I first picked up a review copy of the original MtoF cookbook when I worked in a bookstore and found it one of the most well-written, creative, practical, consistently good cookbooks I have ever used. I bought the Pasta book for my husband when he was learning to cook -- We both love it!!! Michelle Urvater provides a wide variety of recipes and always has suggestions for playing with ingredients and what to do with leftovers.

This book is for those who have a good working relationship with their families and want a guidebook to the old fashioned ideas of courtship. I was a little skeptical of this book at first only because I've grown up in this modern ultra sexed society. When I had the chance to read it I found myself highlighting practically the whole book. If you've read books like "Anne of Green Gables" and wished that you too could engage in the gentle courtship Anne received in her Victorian society, this book will help guide you down that path. This is most definately not for everyone. Most people I know could never give up their way of dating and cohabitating together before marriage. We live in a selfish self centered world. For those who are fed up with these modern ways and long for the old, give this book a try. And remember, 75% of all married couples who cohabitated before they were married, get divorced. This is a terrible statistic. Fight the trends and go for the road less traveled.

Hi, This isn't just for teens! Yes, there maybe some references in the book that seem more like "teen" kind of things. However, even an adult looking for a true husband is able to glean something out of this book. I find that "courtship" is a better word for true "dating". Usually, it takes a few months to one year to get to really know someone even if you live long distance. If you really think that person is Mr. Right, then its time for the "courtship" stage where you get more serious and this is still before engagement. It's like a pre engagement stage. Once you are engaged--you shouldn't have to be thinking "what if I am wrong". You should KNOW once you follow the advise in this book. That way the engagement stage is REALLY the time to Prepare for Matrimony and not have to worry so much. So, give this book a try even if you are an older adult looking for the "perfect" husband. He's out there--just give it a try!

If young men and women would read and heed this book we would probably have less divorce. I know that if I had read this book before I got married we would have had less "bumps" in the road during those first few years. This book helps you ask the pertinent questions to see where you may have the problems and correct them before you get married. I recommend it highly for anyone who is even thinking about the dating game. It's a great alternative. The younger the reader the better!Pre-teens would be my suggested audience. Moms and Dads - you will be glad that you purchased this book early and save yourself and your kids a lot of heartache.

Although I have an interest in Holocaust memoirs and have read dozens to date, I found Bernstein's story both unique and compelling.

Bernstein begins by providing a full picture of her life, starting from childhood. Then known as Seren, the young Bernstein was happy, growing up as one of the youngest children in a large blended family in Hungary. Her father, a mill supervisor, never failed to provide well for his plethora of children, in-laws and grandchildren.

However, even he couldn't stop the forces that wanted to annihilate the Jews. In the early 1930s -- well before many people even had an inkling of the depth of trouble brewing -- Bernstein, her family and friends were forbidden from working or socializing normally. Before long, the huge extended family was unable to keep in contact, though geographically close by; and Bernstein and her father were imprisoned.

Bernstein's troubles, though, were only just beginning. Over the next few years, as she and her sisters struggled to maintain some semblance of normal lives -- young Seren working as a seamstress -- the Iron Guard began to close in upon them.

Bernstein details the long months when she, her youngest sister Esther, and their friends Lily and Ellen struggled to survive at a little-known all-women's work camp. Although Jews were only a small number of the prisoners, they were treated the worst.

Bernstein, who had a friend amputate her big toe after gangrene set in from the cold, and literally became a walking skeleton, was considered one of the luckiest ones -- she survived.

Told in a manner that is simultaneously human yet matter-of-fact, Bernstein's story of survival against all odds is magnificent. It's impossible to read it and not feel incredulous, let alone to ever forget how one woman could possibly survive so much.

5 out of 5 stars unforgettable and moving.......2007-09-03

This is one of the best books I have ever read. I was unable to put it down and finished it in two sittings. It was simultaneously fascinating and appalling if that is comprehendable.
The horrific and degrading treatment of Seren and her fellow prisoners is beyond anything any of us can imagine and their ability to survive against all odds is truly heroic. Man's inhumanity to man is portrayed in all it's shocking detail. I found myself moved to tears several times, but could not stop myself from finishing the book as quickly as I could. It is definitely worth reading. You will never forget it.

Sara Tuvel's story was unusal for a holocaust story because she was able to manipulate the system and remain free for the majority of the time. She was her own counsel from childhood through adulthood, with the ability to think for herself and the fortitude and discipline to prosper in any type of undertaking. Her story is both heart wrenching and uplifting at the same time. From a woman's point of view, this is a good example of a strong woman, who uses her intelligence, intuition, and fortitude to survive a terrible ordeal.
