3 out of 5 stars Very critical, unusual account.......2006-07-15

Mr. Frisch spends most of his time criticizing the Nazi regime, castigating those responsible for not supplying the soldiers with warm clothes etc... It is certainly a unique take on the battles of the Eastern Front if not a particularly compelling one.

5 out of 5 stars The Other Side of the Hill.......2000-09-27

History truly is written by the victors, but now 'Condemned to Live' joins the the ranks of books such as Guy Sager's 'The Forgotten Soldier', Hans von Luck's 'Panzer Commander' and Siegfried Kappe's 'Soldat' to help destroy the image of the average Wehrmacht soldier as being a ruthless, stupid, brutal, amoral automaton. Dr. Frisch was anything but ruthless, stupid, brutal or amoral ,but was simply a young Austrian caught up in the great events of his time, as were so many young men on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Like most of his comrades in the Wehrmacht, there was no question of choice involved in his military service. It was compulsory for all young Germans and Austrians. This type of obedience is difficult for those of us who live in democratic countries to understand, even though our news media are full of examples of just such behaviour from our own people. We call it expediency. In the case of Germany, Hitler and the Nazi's had been slowly chipping away at personal freedom ever since they had come to power in 1933, so that by 1939 they had turned the screw to the point that disobedience or protest became a death sentence for oneself and one's family. Like the majority of Wehrmacht soldiers outside of the ranks of the 'true believers', whose numbers probably never exceeded 10% of regular Wehrmacht soldiers, the name of the game was 'do one's duty to the Vaterland and survive to go home'. In battle loyalty, as in the Allied armies, was given to one's comrades and reality rarely extended beyond that small group. Dr. Frisch takes us on his tour of European battlefields with his Panzer Artillery Battalion from Poland to France, then Russia and on to Sicily and Italy, where he was captured. We get to know a kind, decent man making his way as best he can through the insanity of war, supported by his friends, his sense of humor and a lot of luck. Along the way he meets decent people of a variety of nationalities. He also meets some not so nice people, proving again that decency or the lack of it are not restricted to one ethnic, racial or national grouping. I am glad that Dr. Frisch decided to share his story with us after so many years of silence. The victors have dominated the story of WW2 for too long now. The crimes of Hitler and his Nazi thugs are hideous beyond belief, but many of the young men he press ganged into his army where also victims, and their stories are more pieces in the puzzle of WW2. Perhaps we will eventually have enough of the pieces to understand the greatest calamity which has befallen the human race since the Black Plague of the Dark Ages, and which created and shaped the world we all live in today.

Naturalist in the River: The Early Life and Writings of Alfred Russel Wallace is the story of the great naturalist from his beginnings on the Amazon in 1848 to the end of his work in the Malay Archipelago in 1862. The biography includes key articles by Wallace concerning exploration and biological theory, as well as the major 1855 article on species formation and the 1858 paper that led to the joint announcement, with Charles Darwin, of the theory of evolution through natural selection. The final parts look forward to Wallace’s major contributions to mimicry and biogeography.

5 out of 5 stars A Practical Guide for Families Searching for Eldercare.......2006-10-17

From the first page to the last, this guide offers practical, hands-on tips for navigating the maze of eldercare. As our population ages, more and more people find themselves thrust into the role of caregiver for aging relatives--often parents---usually with little or no background to prepare them for this role.

Eldercare for Dummies is easy-to-understand, engaging and witty, not overly technical or bogged down with research. Targeted directly to readers who face caring for an aging loved one, it guides them through assessing the current needs of the senior, choosing and arranging for appropriate care, ensuring safety, and helping to maintain happiness and quality of life.

5 out of 5 stars How to Help when Help is Refused.......2004-12-21

I made my holiday trip to the bookstore last week. I purchased a copy of Eldercare for Dummies, by Rachelle Zukerman, PhD. The book is packed with light humor and also great tips. I especially liked Chapter 2 with the section on how to help when help is refused. It's great.

5 out of 5 stars This book is wonderful!.......2004-02-26

I am so thankful I found this book! Being the child of older parents, I did not grow up with grandparents. Now my parents are becoming my grandparents. Dr. Zuckerman's book has helped me communicate and understand my parents with a plethora of easy to find information.

5 out of 5 stars In the business of eldercare.......2003-12-27

I recently met Rachelle at a healthcare meeting and was fasinated after hearing she had written her book. As an owner of a "free" senior placement service, I was anxious to read it and see how else I could advise my clients on such tough matters as eldercare. The book is with me wherever I go. Over the holidays I found myself counseling my own family members on how to talk to their in-laws when they begin to notice the ever changing physical events in their lives. I've only started, so there is so much more to learn. In the meantime, I never open the book without a highlighter in hand. Many thanks Rachelle!

5 out of 5 stars A superb resource for families!.......2003-09-11

As a gerontological social worker and teacher of future social workers, I know how very important it is for family members to understand and cope with the issues facing their aging relatives. This book offers current and comprehensive information on all relevant topics, and it's written in a style that will be accessible to every reader. I strongly encourage people to add this to their home libraries ASAP!

    Book Description

There are not many people who can claim to have been collecting, cooking, and devising recipes for mushrooms for more than sixty years, but Antonio Carluccio is one of them. Carluccio's interest in mushrooms-his mycological education-began at the age of seven when he went on mushroom hunts with his father and has culminated in his Neal Street Restaurant in London.

Today, mushrooms are more popular then ever. Chefs everywhere use these delectable morsels to provide a powerful punch of flavor, without adding many calories or fat.
The book begins with a complete field guide, in which forty species are identified with photos. To ensure safety, poisonous look-alike species are also meticulously documented. Then comes a veritable feast of more than 150 mushroom recipes-from classic Italian preparations to Asian-inspired creations and contemporary dishes. Mouthwatering photos accompany each recipe and evoke the earthy sensuality that only mushrooms can bring to the table. In The Complete Mushroom Book, Antonio Carluccio shares the excitement of the hunt and a lifetime of expertise in the kitchen with a new generation of enthusiasts eager to reap the pleasures of cooking with mushrooms.

4 out of 5 stars A Feast for the Mycophyle and the Mycophagist.......2003-12-29

This book by an Italian, Antonio Carluccio, transplanted to England covers the botanical classifications of edible mushrooms and fungi, tips on collecting, a guide to identifying edible and toxic mushrooms, and a large collection of mushroom recipes. It has many things to recommend it, but it also should be given more than a cursory thought if you have an interest in purchasing the book.

As a compulsive book collector, I often justify the purchase of a book solely on the presence of one good idea comprising not much more than a page or two, but you may not have such liberal criteria when laying out the long green for a book, especially for bone white plants.

The devil's advocate view of this book is that:

It's coverage of mushroom identification and distinction of culinary from toxic is weak in that the book does not give a consistant photographic coverage to all species. I would be extremely nervous if I knew someone was using only this book as a field guide. A quick comparison photographs for the edible boletus badius on page 33 with the toxic russula emetica on page 71 shows how similar two very different mushrooms can look. The comparison is scarier when you see that the two species flourish at the same time of the year. My main point is that to a non-mycologist, this appears to be a very inadequate field guide. Much better would be one species per page with much more consistant coverage over all species.

While the title of the book refers to all mushrooms, it's emphasis is clearly on wild mushrooms. About 75 percent of all the recipes call for wild mushrooms, primarily morels and many of the recipes calling for cultivated species call for unusual or expensive species, up to and including truffles.

So what does that leave for the non-mushroom hunter living in Brooklyn? Here are some reasons for buying this book:

The well written text and good photography provides a worthy vicarious experience of the thrills of mushroom hunting in Devon, England.

The recipes give several worthy methods for preserving mushrooms, including drying and pickling. This is the material I would pick to primarily justify the purchase. I have not seen it anywhere else.

Even if you substitute the humble Pennsylvania button mushroom or the slightly more upscale cremini for the blue stocking morels and procinis, you get a wealth of recipes to add to a vegetarian diet. The recipes draw heavily from French and Italian cuisine, but they include a broad selection from various oriental cuisines as well. Even a fair number of German and Spanish dishes are included. Oddly, there seems to be practically no recipes for the portobello.

You also get useful practical tips on handling and eating mushrooms. The book makes it clear that almost every mushroom is healthier to eat cooked than to eat raw. I have heard it said that even our darling little Kennet Square button mushrooms have toxins which must be cooked to remove the toxins. Give the raw mushrooms a pass the next time you hit the salad bar. The information on taking special care with raw mushrooms and alcohol is pretty chilling, but again, as testified by the long popularity of Coq au Vin, this danger is eliminated by thorough cooking.

In general, I would rate the culinary advice on mushroom technique to be very useful.

Since I am very fond of cookbooks on single subjects, I recommend this book for the recipes and techniques and background on mushroom culture and collection in the wild, as long as you keep the wild part to your armchair. The price is a bit high, so I would not click on the order button without some check on alternate titles, especially the volume by Jane Grigson, `The Mushroom Feast' which I have not yet had the pleasure to sample.

              Amazon.com's Best of 2001

First attracted to his subject by its horrific ability to destroy the human mind and body, journalist David Shenk ultimately finds reasons to accept Alzheimer's disease--and almost forgive it--in The Forgetting. Shenk describes his work as a biography, the life story of a biological outlaw that sends victims "on a slow but certain trajectory toward forgetting and death." But his illuminating portrait of this growing epidemic offers more than a basic chronology. Shenk begins with the disease's christening in 1906, when German physician Alois Alzheimer discovered mysterious tangles and plaques in the brain of a dead woman who in life had suffered severe memory loss and dementia. The tale unfolds to reveal a host of intriguing players: struggling scientists (the clever, the bullheaded, and the pharmaceutically endowed), politicians divided by opposing priorities, exhausted caregivers, and patients whose biological clocks virtually tick backward over an average eight-year period. It includes impossible twists: longer life expectancies and successful treatments for other diseases mean more cases of Alzheimer's will inevitably occur. Shenk's graceful synthesis of personal accounts (from Plato to Reagan) with a century-long search for answers and cures leads him to an impressive conclusion. Perhaps Alzheimer's disease is much like winter: "Once it is gone, we'll face less hardship, but we'll also have lost an important lens on life." --Liane Thomas

              Book Description

Afflicting nearly half of all persons over the age of 85, Alzheimer’s disease kills nearly 100,000 Americas a year as it insidiously robs them of their memory and wreaks havoc on the lives of their loved ones. It was once minimized and misunderstood as forgetfulness in the elderly, but Alzheimer’s is now at the forefront of many medical and scientific agendas, for as the world’s population ages, the disease will kill millions more and touch the lives of virtually everyone.

The Forgetting is a scrupulously researched, multilayered analysis of Alzheimer’s and its social, medical, and spiritual implications. David Shenk presents us with much more than a detailed explanation of its causes and effects and the search for a cure. He movingly captures the disease’s impact on its victims and their families, and he looks back through history, explaining how Alzheimer’s most likely afflicted such figures as Jonathan Swift, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and William de Kooning. The result is a searing, powerfully engaging account of Alzheimer’s disease, offering a grim but sympathetic and ultimately encouraging portrait.

The result is a searing, powerfully engaging account of Alzheimer's disease, offering a grim but sympathetic and ultimately encouraging portrait.

"Riveting... Superb... A wonderfully readable history of the brain and of memory."
                 SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE BOOK REVIEW

"A remarkable addition to the literature of the science of the mind... Shenk has drawn together threads of neurobiology, art history, and psychology into a literary portrait of Alzheimer's disease perfectly balanced between sorrow and wonder, devastation and awe."
                 LOS ANGELES TIMES BOOK REVIEW

"An elegant new book... Shenk rises above the usual rhetoric of combat and cure, enabling us to confront Alzheimer's not as an alien pestilence but as part of the human condition."

"Written with a researcher's attention to detail and a storyteller's ear."

4 out of 5 stars The title haunts to tell of the forgetting disease.......2007-07-17

You don't have to be a science nut to be enthralled by David Shenk's book, The Forgetting--Alzheimer's: Portrait of an Epidemic. From the first official case of Alzheimer's (Auguste D., a fifty-one-year-old German woman first treated by neuropathologist Alois Alzheimer in 1901), to the use of transgenics to study the disease in mice, Shenk covers everything you need to know about the harrowing disease that, by 2050, will affect 15,000,000 Americans. Except, that is--a surefire way to prevent it.

After 100 years, scientists still do not know exactly why humans get Alzheimer's, but they have learned a lot along the way. Shenk explains even the most intricate details of the disease clearly and carefully, making use of helpful analogies and explaining how memory works on a biological level. He chronicles the decline of several public figures, each of which was either diagnosed with the disease or likely had it before Alzheimer's twentieth-century discovery, including some of the greatest minds of the Western world: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Jonathan Swift, Jorge Luis Borges, Willem de Kooning.

Shenk is careful to keep a human element running through the book, reminding readers that science is not a cold, black-and-white world, but a flexible, complex world on which our daily lives depend. Each chapter begins with an anecdote from a family caregiver (spouse, child, etc.), and Shenk follows the progress (or rather, deterioration) of a support group for patients in the early stages. He also writes of a listserve, where caregivers from across the nation ask questions, give advice, share experiences, vent frustration, and celebrate those rare lucid moments.

Alzheimer's risks increase drastically with age, and, as Baby Boomers near retirement, it becomes crucial for average Americans to understand all they can about a disease that will prove both emotionally and financially devastating even for those who do not receive a diagnosis. Shenk gives us hope, however, with discussions of scientific advances and a chapter devoted to how each of us can improve our odds and perhaps escape the ultimate forgetting.

Armchair Interviews says: Well worth reading for the future--our parents or our own.

5 out of 5 stars This book is tops!.......2007-05-13

I have read a lot about Alzheimer's but this is definitely one of the best. It is easy to read with good illustrations of Alzheimer's onset in persons such as Ronald Reagan. Shenk's comparison of a baby's growth with Alzheimer's decline illustrates the heartbreak for those caring for someone with this disease. I highly recommend this book to professionals as well as laypeople.

              5 out of 5 stars I love this book........2007-04-29

The Forgetting is a great book. I love the way it "introduces" you to Alzheimer's. Not so much scientific as human. This terrible disease process that is stalking us as we all age is often misunderstood and not truly appreciated for all its horribleness until it strikes within your own family. I found this book strangely comforting and ultimately left me in a better place than when I started reading it. I highly recommend this book. As an elder law attorney who specializes in helping family's with issues related to this disease process I include this book on my must read list I give to clients. I also highly recommend the DVD that was inspired by this book The Forgetting - A Portrait of Alzheimer's.

4 out of 5 stars An intimate portrait.......2006-06-02

I am 24 years old, I have never dealt with Alzheimer's in any way, shape, or form. I happened across The Forgetting in a bookstore, being the intense browser that I am, and was immediately attracted to the portrayal of the subject matter.
I enjoyed each page of The Forgetting. With every word, and each carefullly crafted sentence I began to see a different world, one I had been ignorant of and blind too.
I discovered the severity of an illness, which in all likelyhood will continue to spread, and battled with humanity's inability to cure this storm of the century.
David Shenk guides the reader through the history of Alzheimer's and the very little knowledge we have accrued on a illness which has hit its centennial mark. I am thankful David Shenk wrote a touching and compassionate piece of medical history. Although I may not fully understand the implications of Alzheimer's I am now aware of the severity of the illness and am willing to do what little I can to help.

              5 out of 5 stars The Forgetting.......2004-01-30

I was diagnosed nine years ago with Alzheimer's and have read everything I could get my hands on about this disease. I think your book is the most informative book on Alzheimer's that I have read. I think it could be called the Alzheimer's Bible.

Henry Ford was not only one of America's great industrialists, he was also one of America's great haters. With "his rambling mouth" and his "volatile passions and budgetless financial resources," Ford became famous around the country and the world for his rabid anti-Semitism. "He did not like the Jews because he believed they were warmongering, manipulative, and alien," writes Neil Baldwin. A pacifist, Ford blamed the First World War on "German-Jewish bankers." In the 1920s, he published The Dearborn Independent, which featured notorious articles such as "The International Jew: The World's Problem." In 1938, he became the first American recipient of a Nazi award bestowed upon non-Germans. Baldwin details Ford's views and activities and also describes the phenomenon of anti-Semitism in the United States during the 1920s and 1930s. Henry Ford once declared, infamously, "History is more or less the bunk." His descendents seem to disagree. "Beginning with Henry Ford II," writes Baldwin, "succeeding generations of Fords have sought to put an end to Henry Ford's dark legacy" by supporting Israel and Jewish charities. Their actions bear out what one Jewish newspaper said in response to Ford in 1920: "We are firm in our belief that stupidity cannot triumph." --John Miller

                  Book Description

This provocative history of the world's most famous anti-Semite--a Detroit Free Press and New York Post bestseller--examines the origins, methods, and consequences of hatred.

How and why did this quintessential American folk-hero and pioneering industrialist become one of the most obsessive anti-Semites of our time-a man who devoted his immense financial resources to publishing a pernicious forgery, The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion? And once Henry Ford's virulent media campaign against the Jews took off during the "anxious decade" following World War I, how did America's already splintered Jewish community attempt to cope with the relentless tirade conducted for ninety-one consecutive weeks in the automobile manufacturer's personal newspaper, The Dearborn Independent? What were the repercussions of Ford's Jew-hatred extending deeply into the 1930s?

Drawing upon previously uncited oral history transcripts, archival correspondence, and family memoirs, Neil Baldwin answers these and other questions; examining the biases of the men at the inner circle of the Ford Motor Company and disentangling the painful ideological struggles among an elite Jewish leadership reluctantly pitted against the clout and popularity of "The Flivver King."

As the Ford Motor Company celebrates its hundredth anniversary, with anti-Semitism resurgent in Europe and Islamic fundamentalists reading The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, Henry Ford and the Jews is a riveting biography with new relevance for anyone interested in contemporary history.

                  5 out of 5 stars History isn't bunk..........2005-12-21

This book enlightened me about many historical connections, above all, about Henry Ford's strong influence on Hitler, and his acceptance of honors from him. The author offers very fine understanding of the American scene that fostered Ford's views, and also the reaction to Ford's publications of major antisemetic works.

Unfortunately, the American scene has recently showed uncomfortable parallels with Ford's views. The antisemetic campaign about the "war on Christmas" makes "Henry Ford and the Jews" all the more relevant in 2005.

Hendrik Hertzberg, in a recent New Yorker article about the ongoing phoney war on Christmas, made a direct connection to Henry Ford and his antisemitism. He wrote:

... Christmas itself, in something like its recognizably modern
... form, with gifts and cards and elves, dates from the early
... nineteenth century. The War on Christmas seems to have come
... along around a hundred years later, with the publication of
... "The International Jew," by Henry Ford, the automobile
... magnate, whom fate later punished by arranging to have his
... fortune diverted to the sappy, do-gooder Ford Foundation.
... "It is not religious tolerance in the midst of religious
... difference, but religious attack that they"-the
... Jews-"preach and practice," he wrote. "The whole record of
... the Jewish opposition to Christmas, Easter and certain
... patriotic songs shows that." Ford's anti-Semitism has not
... aged well, thanks to the later excesses of its European
... adherents, but by drawing a connection between
... Christmasbashing and patriotism-scorning he pointed the way
                  ... for future Christmas warriors.

4 out of 5 stars The Last To Know............2004-01-16

I think I was the last person in the United States to become aware of Henry Ford's anti-semitism.

I make it a practice to study one person a month and I decided as a business builder, Henry Ford was worthy of my attention and study.

I found this particular biography and thought, "OK, this has a completely different approach, let's try it on."

I found Baldwin's passion and zealousness for his topic and his particular slant to be very powerful. As is frequent in such writing, it also became a barrier because every action Ford took became, through Baldwin's eyes, a matter of Ford being the Personification of Evil.

I am not condoning Ford's thoughts, beliefs or behaviors. I am believing that not every action he took was a result of some undercurrent of Anti Semitism.

That said, this book is worth a read due to the level of research Baldwin has done both in this biography and the biography of one of Ford's friends and role models (and less rabidly Anti-Semitic although there was some there) in Thomas Alva Edison.

I just had this thought: I wonder how many business leaders remain staunchly racist... yet it has gone deeply underground in this age.

I wonder how many business (and political leaders) continue to harbor less than transformed thought?

Something to think about... and continue to stand against.

                  4 out of 5 stars Well worth a read.......2003-10-15

Neil Baldwin's "Henry Ford and the Jews" is a compelling look at how a genius at one thing --- the mass production of a good automobile --- could become such a dangerous buffoon when it came to another thing --- the mass production of an idea. At some point, our title character ceased to be just "Henry Ford, automaker" and instead became Henry Ford, wealthy and powerful symbol of international antisemitism. Baldwin's portrait of Ford in all his horrible glory is fascinating.
