    Book Description

At the time of Larry Holland's death in March of 1999, Disciples of an Uncertain Season, published just the fall before, had virtually sold out. This volume reprints Disciples in its entirety with the addition of a number of poems previously published available only in magazines and journals. An introduction and afterword by his friends and fellow poets Red Shuttleworth and Neil Harrison have been added as well. This enterprise has been a labor of love, and this collection is dedicated to the friends, family, and students of Larry Holland.

            Book Description

Henry More (1614-87) was the greatest English metaphysical theologian and the most perplexing; he was also perhaps the most distinguished member of the group of divines known as the Cambridge Platonists. An admirer of Galileo, Descartes and Boyle, he rejected their detailed applications of mechanical philosophy to the explanation of natural phenomena. He was an experimenter, yet also a cabalist, and one of the few writers whom Newton acknowledged as having influenced his ideas. First published in 1990, this thorough and accessible biography is the first book-length treatment of this remarkable character. Hall illuminates More's important contributions to science, particularly his work on space and time which influenced Newton, and gives fascinating insights into his spiritual philosophy and his preoccupation with witchcraft. The depth of Professor Hall's scholarship makes the book an exceptional account of the turbulent world of the Scientific Revolution.

            4 out of 5 stars GREAT.......2007-10-03

Very good book on raising a veggie baby. It gave alot of great statistics and facts that helped me feel reassured that raising my son veggie was the right thing. Great ideas on feeding too. Would be a great book for anyone who is worried that being vegetarian might be unhealthy or to give to others who feel you are doing the wrong thing. :)

            4 out of 5 stars Good Information.......2007-01-04

Once you get past the beginning part of the book that is pretty much tables and charts of nutrients, this book gets quite interesting and actually readable. This is a terrific resource for parents in need of support when choosing a vegetarian or vegan diet for their child.

4 out of 5 stars great book, yummy receipes.......2006-11-07

As a vegetarian mom I worry about doing everything right for my little 5 month old. It's nice to read so many pros and get some good info on what to look out for.

            5 out of 5 stars Great Reference.......2003-01-07

This comprehensive books guides parents who are raising vegetarian children. Especially helpful is the advice for vegans who must be especially conscientious in making sure their children can all the necessary nutrients and calories. This was an invaluable source when writing my cookbook, Simply Natural Baby Food, as I wanted to concentrate on vegetarian and vegan recipes.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference, not only for vegetarians.......2002-01-25

I just finished reading this book, and I wish I had it when my daughter was born!

We becams vegetarian (nearly vegan) over the last year or so, and that's why I decided to read this book: even though my daughter is no longer a baby (she's 2 and half), I wanted to start from scratch with the info on vegetarian nutrition for children.

This book offers a wealth of information on macro- and micro-nutrients and on all staple foods for a vegetarian/vegan baby. There's plenty of info on grains, vegetables, beans and nuts, fruits, and all vitamin and minerals necessary for a baby to thrive. I found the info on grains particularly interesting, as it went into grains I have never heard of or was not very familiar with and showed the ideal sequence to introduce the various grains, from the lightest and gluten free to the more common, glutinous corn and wheat.

Because even in omnivorous families, meat is one of the last items introduced to a baby, I think this is a great resource for any parent, vegetarian or not, as fruits, vegetables and grains are usually introduced first in any case, and this book will explain you how and when it's best to introduce each of those foods, also taking into consideration the prevention or spotting of possible allergies or intolerances.

The book also offers ideas for menus for your baby, and at the end there is a useful FAQ section.

A great book, which I am planning to buy as a gift the next time a friend is pregnant.

If you have a wok, a handful of fresh ingredients, and ten minutes to throw together a meal, then this is the book for you. Stir-frying is one of the quickest, easiest, and healthiest forms of cookery. The food is simply seared in the heat of the wok, so vegetables keep their bright color and crunchy bites, and meat and fish take on fabulous marinade flavors. This book is packed with ideas to get your wok sizzling.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good cookbook, but frustratingly poor adaptation for US.......2003-03-03

First off, this is a gorgeous cookbook. It's a large format and very well illustrated. Virtually every recipe includes four pictures: a large picture of the finished dish, and three smaller ones illustrating various steps. A key also grades the recipes on a difficulty scale of 1-3. Few recipes rate above a 1 (easiest).

What I really like about this cookbook, other than its good looks, is the wide variety of stir-fries included. It covers beef, pork, lamb, poultry, seafood, tofu, and vegetable stir-fries; there are stir-fries with noodles, for serving over rice, as salads, or as a stand-alone dish. I think stir-fry is the ultimate quick weeknight meal, and all the choices here could keep you going for weeks without getting bored.

However, there is a problem. This book was originally published in Australia, and very little has been done to adapt it for the US. For instance, bell peppers are called "capsicum," and ramen noodles "instant noodles." I figured out that English spinach means regular spinach, but I'm still not sure about Lebanese cucumbers, or a few other things. A small chart at the back translates the US names of a handful of items, but not enough.

The recipes were developed with metric measurements, and although conversions are given, they tend to come out as awkward odd measurements: 3-1/2 ounces of mushrooms, or 13 ounces of beef.

Also, the book is not consistently written. For instance, although there is a key to stir-fry ingredients at the front of the book, I ran across some things that either were not in the list, or were listed under another name. One recipe called for "Golden Mountain Sauce." I could not find this in the list, until I finally noticed that it was alphabetized under "Seasoning sauce" (gee, why didn't I think to look there?). Buried in the text describing seasoning sauce, it said, "also sold under the name Golden Mountain Sauce."

There were one or two other things I didn't recognize that weren't described in the list, but I suspect this is because they are common Australian terms that didn't translate.

You can also tell that the recipes were written by different people and not edited to appear consistent, as the same techniques are described differently in some recipes; some leave out hints/steps like freezing beef in order to get thin slices; and some specify a cut (usually rump steak for beef--I think this is boneless sirloin?) but some just say "beef."

Bottom line, this book offers enough good things to outweigh the bad, so on balance I do like it. But the bad things just shouldn't be there in the first place. It should have been reworked before publication in the US.

4 out of 5 stars a great variety of recipes, and exotic dishes.......2002-03-13

all of the recipes in this book look wonderful, there are plenty of beautiful pictures to accompany this book. most of the recipes are fairly simple and quick to prepare. the only downfall is that many of the recipes require special ingredients that you might not find at your local grocery store. if this is not a problem for you, then you will enjoy the book. the ideas are great and there is a lot of variety, recipes for all kinds of meats, vegetables and some sea food. it also includes descriptions of ingredients, if you're new to asian foods!

                        Book Description

The author surveys the astonishing diversity of South-East Asian wildlife, a fauna that includes 660 distinct species, representing over one-seventh of the world's wild mammals. Among them are many mammals which cannot be found elsewhere: the gymnures and tree-shews, flying bats, tarsiers and
orangutans, aboreal fruit eaters, anteaters, and numerous rodents. The text is enlivened by descriptions of scientific discoveries and personal anecdotes based on the author's long experience as a naturalist in the regions he describes.

4 out of 5 stars Great mammal guide for the tourist........2001-04-02

Similar in layout to the other New Holland guides. Thereby making it obvious that it is not intended for the scientist. Small and handy, perfect for a pocket. However, do not think it only covers a small number of the best known mammals. Several newly discovered mammals are included (e.g. a strange ungulate called the Saola, and a beautifully striped rabbit only discovered in the late 1990's). Most of these are interesting but would never be encountered by the "normal backpacker". Several rarities are also included for example the Lesser One-horned Rhino, of which it is believed that only approx. 60 individuals survives. Almost all of the larger mammals known to occur in this region are described individually with at least one (usually very good) colour photo. The small number of large species not described are almost always mentioned in the description of a relative. The smaller mammals (bats, insectivores etc.) are described in groups (also with at least one photo) usually comprising a genus. The text is strait forward and easy to read for everybody with average English skills. However do not forget your glasses, the text is very small! The text itself is good and actually quite long with the books size in mind. It usually comprises of id, range (no maps!), behaviour, habitat etc. Each species description (incl. photo) comprises 2-1/2 page. A great thing for the novice is the use of easily recognisable thumbnails (an example being deer). Thereby it shouldn't be a problem finding the species your looking for. In the intro of the book a chapter speaks about finding and observing mammals, and 31 national parks or reserves are also mentioned briefly. The thing I find most annoying is the very small number of dark or unclear photos. Another thing to remember is that the book doesn't included whales or dolphins other than the one species which regularly enters fresh water. With the prise and size in mind everybody travelling to this area should bring a copy.

                        Book Description

For centuries, reports of man-eating tigers in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore have circulated, shrouded in myth and anecdote. This fascinating book documents the "big cat"-human relationship in this area during its 350-year colonial period, re-creating a world in which people feared tigers but often came into contact with them, because these fierce predators prefer habitats created by human interference. Peter Boomgaard shows how people and tigers adapted to each other's behavior, each transmitting this learning from one generation to the next. He discusses the origins of stories and rituals about tigers and explains how cultural biases of Europeans and class differences among indigenous populations affected attitudes toward the tigers. He provides figures on their populations in different eras and analyzes the factors contributing to their present status as an endangered species. Interweaving stories about Malay kings, colonial rulers, tiger charmers, and bounty hunters with facts about tigers and their way of life, the book is an engrossing combination of environmental and micro history.

                        4 out of 5 stars Interesting anecdotes.......2006-01-22

This is a really interesting book and the author has found invaluable sources to paint a picture of tigers in the Malay world during this time period (1600-1950). I appreciate the fact that the book crosses the boundaries between anthropology and zoology at time, looking at indigenous beliefs and differences between different locations in the Malay world.

At times, I felt the book went into too much detail to make it a light read. I would only recommend this book for serious students of Insular Southeast Asia or tigers. However, if you fit that category, I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars This book offers a unique perspective on elephants.......1999-07-13

When thinking of elephants, Thailand is not the first place that comes to most people's mind. However, as described here, elephants have played a major role in Thai art and culture throughout history. The author draws upon 14 years studying & teaching art in Thailand to present this comprehensive view of the elephant in Thai society. She does well in combining art with the elephants' active ceremonial & working roles. Elephants are shown in many art forms including drawings, engravings, murals, sculpture & bronzes. Well illustrated in b/w, there is also a 16 page color gallery showing a great variety of art and architectural detail. The physical characteristics of the Thai elephant and its current endangered status are covered here as well. This book provides an excellent overall view of the elephant's central role in Thai life & culture.

                            Book Description

For over a century the Indomalayan Region (or Oriental Region) has been recognized as one of the major zoogeographical regions of the earth. In spite of its rich fauna of mammals, with over one thousand species - more than a fifth of the world's total - there has never before been a comprehensive reference work bringing together information on all the mammals of the region.

                            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An Impressive Overview.......2004-06-12

This book is a singular one that it covers the mammalian fauna of the entire vast oriental region (the Indian Subcontinent & South-East Asia including South China and Indonesia as far east as the Moluccas) in a single volume.
Given its scope, details had to be kept to a minimum. It is basically a checklist covering nomenclature, range, regional variation (subspecies), and sometimes essential features distinguishing similar species. A basic distribution map is provided for most species, though drawings illustrate only a few, so this is obviously more of a reference than a field guide.
It is particularly useful for regions like much of Indonesia, whose fauna is yet to be dealt with in detail in any separate book.
Unfortunately, with all the recent discovery of "new" mammal species in various parts of the region, this book is no longer truly comprehensive and an updated edition would be very welcome.

Encouragement. It's more than a compliment or a pat on the back. According to Drs. Larry Crabb and Dan Allender, it is the most basic form of counseling -- a skill that can be mastered by laypeople as well as counselors. What must we know in order to fulfill the biblical exhortation to "encourage one another"? Encouragement: The Key to Caring tells you. Part one deals with understanding encouragement, and part two explores the process of encouragement, including such practical how-tos as - developing a careful selection of encouraging words - cultivating active listening skills - using biblical fellowship to move beyond superficial smiles and shallow greetings - recognizing subtle opportunities for encouragement -- Without the encouragement of a caring community, biblical truth taught in church tends to just thicken people's defense layers. But authenticity, freedom, and greater love for God and others are the fruit of encouragement, and evidence of the tremendous power God invests in individuals and churches who practice it.

                              5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Friendships.......2007-03-23

Some books age well. Normally that's because they present timeless truth in timeless ways. They avoid dating themselves by wedding themselves to the latest fad or passing fancy. Encouragement is just such a book. It describes the power of timely spiritual conversations motivated by grace and spoken heart-to-heart.

This work is the most practical and immediately applicable of the many fine works by Crabb and Allender. Extremely useful for equipping lay counselors and caregivers.

                              5 out of 5 stars Enlightening.......2004-05-10

This is a wonderful book that has changed my understanding on how to respond to others' need for encouragement. Frankly speaking, I've been misled for years by what people said about stuff like applying empathy towards others, often finding myself at dead end which did not lead to what the Bible says we should head for. The book points the way from the shallow need for nurturing the other person's layer to entering the core, from attention on what to say to having the right attitude as we seize the opportunity for encouragement. Sadly enough, although the above is not a new concept and can be realized and accepted through common sense, we have been confused by theories of secular counselling which has pointed us to unbiblical ways of caring for others.

Though I think the book could have been even more helpful by saying more how we can continue to encourage after opening the door, I decide not to drop a star since I think it is a must read for all Christians who seriously desire to do their part in this much needed ministry of encouragement, especially because I seldom come across books which provide such valuable advice on this topic which is compatible with what the Bible says.

5 out of 5 stars Encouragement Is A Two Way Street.......2003-12-19

This is an excellent book by very inspired authors. Encouragement is in fact a two way street. If you read a book about encouragement you are probably expecting to learn how to be more positive personally. However, we also need to know about our responsibility to be more encouraging toward others. This book will teach the reader that we are responsible for every word and every action toward others. Our responses to other people can be encouraging or discouraging. I don't think I had taken my actions toward others serious enough until I read this book. This book should be read by all high school students because it really guides the reader into a better understanding of both self-image and social responsibility. The book is a quick read and holds your attention very well.

5 out of 5 stars Encouragement is inspired by love and directed toward fear.......2000-12-31

"A few well-timed words suited perfectly to the need of a particular moment can yield enduring results in someone's life. When layered Christians meet together, their purpose is to protect themselves from each other or to use each other to enhance their own self-esteem. The basis of our fellowship is our shared life in Christ by promoting fuller appreciation of Christ through mirroring Christ to one another, treating each other as valuable bearers of the image of God, and accepting one another in spite of shortcomings. We are to understand the fears, defenses and needs of others and to become committed, not to sharing ourselves, but to sharing the Lord by ministering to those needs. We handle negative emotions three ways: repression, unrestrained expression or acknowledgement and proper expression to God. Change takes place when truth is presented in relationship. The essence of encouragement is exposure without rejection by conveying confidence to change. Encouragement is the fruit of a self-examined heart and a compassionate, discerning sensitivity to the needs of others. The work of restoration is to help self-centered, unbelieving, fearful people to become Christ-centered, trusting and bold."

I read this book as an assignment for a Bible Counseling course and found it extremely helpful. One new idea I learned was "My desire is to be encouraged, but my goal will be to minister to others." I've been struggling with my own need for encouragement and Chapter 5 helped clarify it for me: I need to learn to trust God for my own encouragement and focus my attention on ministering to others - only then will I know true joy.

Yup, this is one of the best books I have ever seen on the (often ignored) subject of encouragement. On the down side, the book is written toward the Christain viewpoint (I'm a member of the Church or Religious Science), so reading this book took several extra hours as I "translated" it into secular language. But, it was well worth the effort! I am going to order some of Larry's other books.

                                      Book Description

This comprehensive biography traces the life and works of Robert Maillart, one of the most important engineers and designers of the twentieth century. His career developed around a central issue of modern technological society: the debate between two antithetical views of engineering opposing applied science, which relied on general mathematical theories for understanding structures against design, which Maillart championed. Maillart considered structures not merely works of utility but also as works of art. As utilitarian objects, he created a series of innovations of lasting significance. Aesthetically, Maillart shaped his three innovations in concrete to create surprising and often stunning new forms. Providing an analysis of these innovations, this biography also connects Maillart’s aesthetic ideas with the private and professional context in which he worked.

                                      Book Description

Offering a multidimensional approach to one of the most important episodes of the twentieth century, The Columbia Guide to the Holocaust offers readers and researchers a general history of the Holocaust while delving into the core issues and debates in the study of the Holocaust today.

Each of the book's five distinct parts stands on its own as valuable research aids; together, they constitute an integrated whole. Part I provides a narrative overview of the Holocaust, placing it within the larger context of Nazi Germany and World War II. Part II examines eight critical issues or controversies in the study of the Holocaust, including the following questions: Were the Jews the sole targets of Nazi genocide, or must other groups, such as homosexuals, the handicapped, Gypsies, and political dissenters, also be included? What are the historical roots of the Holocaust? How and why did the "Final Solution" come about? Why did bystanders extend or withhold aid?

Part III consists of a concise chronology of major events and developments that took place surrounding the Holocaust, including the armistice ending World War I, the opening of the first major concentration camp at Dachau, Germany's invasion of Poland, the failed assassination attempt against Hitler, and the formation of Israel.

Part IV contains short descriptive articles on more than two hundred key people, places, terms, and institutions central to a thorough understanding of the Holocaust. Entries include Adolf Eichmann, Anne Frank, the Warsaw Ghetto, Aryanization, the SS, Kristallnacht, and the Catholic Church. Part V presents an annotated guide to the best print, video, electronic, and institutional resources in English for further study.

Armed with the tools contained in this volume, students or researchers investigating this vast and complicated topic will gain an informed understanding of one of the greatest tragedies in world history.

5 out of 5 stars An Indispensible Guide for Educators.......2001-05-31

Niewyk and Nicosia have given us an indispensible addition to the vast literature on the Holocaust. Due to legally required Holocaust education in some states, many people whose specialty is not Holocaust studies are required to teach about the Holocaust. The biggest worry in this is the serious possibility of the Holocaust being presented in a way that is kitschy, usually with no more important lesson than Santayana's trite witticism about repeating history. What *The Columbia Guide to the Holocaust* provides is a wonderful overview of the Holocaust especially designed for non-experts. While the text is concise and readable, the best parts of the book are outside the normal text. Niewyk and Nicosia provide several sections that make this book ideal for beginners in Holocaust studies and educators that must teach about the Holocaust: biographies of many important individuals, "location" biographies of the major death camps, ghettos and other important sites (such as Babi Yar), and an enormous annotated bibliography of books, music, museums, documentaries and movies, and internet sites. While there is not much here for the established scholar (though even they may find the extensive bibliography useful), for beginning students and especially for educators, there is no better source to have by your side when studying, discussing or teaching the Holocaust.
