Customer Reviews:
Great memoir of a WW II hero.......2004-02-01
I was surprised by the story of an Iowa teen who volunteered for the army during World War II. (I've read a lot of Stephen Ambrose and this was more personal than BAND OF BROTHERS) The writing was engaging and Jack Evans tells the story of his Army experiences from Texas boot camp to the battlefields of France and Germany. Jack's prolific letter writing at the time left a legacy of historical notes that he uses well to supplement his memories. I found THE LAST BATTLE moving and hard to set down. I've rarely read anyone who has depicted the horror of battle, as seen through the eyes of a green teenaged soldier, who turns into a battle hardened hero, as well as Jack has done here.

Theodore W. Case - Loud & Clear!.......2004-04-10
It's about as far away from Hollywood as you can get, both geographically and philosophically, but Tinseltown owes a great debt to Auburn NY, nonetheless. It was here, in the unlikeliest of places, that Theodore W. Case invented the process of putting sound on film, and forever changed the Moviegoing Experience(...).
The story of Theodore Case is obscure to all but the most avid film buffs. From his days at Yale, Case had a fascination with light and sound waves. Using his sharply inquisitive mind, and working out of a backyard greenhouse that he converted into a laboratory, Case unlocked the mystery of synchronizing sound and motion into one remarkable process.
Sadly, his logical inventor's mind never imagined the devious lengths movie moguls would go to in order to deprive him of the process and the credit for this monumental discovery. To this day, many people still believe that the Fox Corporation invented the process of sound on film, indeed winning a special Academy Award for their "discovery".
Thanks to Luke and Toni, there is now solid, documented, accurate printed information to set the record straight and give Theodore W. Case his due. Although the text is written from an intermediate readers level, the book will delight anyone with a genuine interest in movies, inventions or underdogs. It is well worth the read and a must-have addition to any movie lover's library!

Book Description
Foreign adoption is an often tricky, sometimes treacherous venture that is steadily gaining in popularity. Myra Alperson realizes that families pursuing this avenue of adoption need all the help they can get-and she fits it all into this handy guide.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful But Outdated.......2004-12-27
This book did have some helpful and insightful information, but most of the ligistics were severely outdated. The costs are so far below the present day costs that they never should have been printed. Also, the author seemed to have a very negative outlook toward the different avenues of international adoption except the avenues she chose to adopt through, such as independent adoption. Actually she was negative towards many aspects of international adoption unless it worked for her. She did not seem very open-minded. She just wants you to know what worked for her and the rest, well...it wasn't important. I would not recommend if you're seeking concrete unbias information.
Casualty of an ever-changing world.......2003-09-06
This book is one of the many casualties of the Web where ever changing country guidelines can be found with a click of the mouse. In Alperson's defense, a print publication of this nature is by definition static and outdated before it even hits the market. Still, this book makes for good reading and provides good advice. It is definitely worth reading, but double check the figures and requirements on the Web and elsewhere.
Gisela Gasper Fitzgerald, author of ADOPTION: An Open, Semi-Open or Closed Practice?
What an awful book.......2003-04-23
Outdated, declasse and so preachy/stupid. You'd be better using the internet to find out the real deal on international adoption than reading this insipid book.
Outdated - But Useful for the Basics.......2002-02-11
I took this book out of the library, and boy was I glad I didn't buy it before getting a good look at it! The information is woefully outdated (ie: Alperson claims that filing the all-important INS I-600A form costs only $168 - it now costs $405! She doesn't even acknowledge that all the important INS forms are now easily downloaded off the IRS website with concise instructions - a lifesaver!). While her basic information is good, there is nothing here that you can't find online. Our exhaustive pre-adoption research found that the most reliable and up-to-date info is on the web - ever-changing country guidelines, INS procedures and politics place the international adoption process in a constant state of flux. There is no way a print publication can possibly keep up with the changes. Since there is such an emotional toll with adoption, I feel that it is best to seek out only the most current info - that way you won't get your hopes up based on outdated material. Also, by using the web, you can read the stories of individual families and contact them directly to learn first-hand of their adoption experiences. I really learned how to negotiate the process from families who had recently completed adoptions in the country we had selected. They gave me the real inside information, and even helped us to choose the agency that was right for us. If I had gone on Alperson's circa 1997 advice, I would have taken many wrong turns.
While Alperson's book contains some good, solid info on the aspects of international adoption that are constants - save yourself the money and avoid being confused by old data by checking out the web. If you are intent on having a "hard copy" of adoption information, be aware that this book contains serious misinformation regarding country regulations and INS procedures that may set you back.
Definitely worth reading.......2001-11-26
This book wasn't quite what I was looking for (more of an instruction manual, less of a personal-journey saga) but it was still definitely an interesting read. Ms. Alperson is very honest and upfront and does have great advice. This book is good moral support.

Horse: From Noble Steeds to Beasts of Burden
ASIN: 0300104723 |
Book Description
A versatile genius whose oeuvre includes paintings, engravings, and detailed anatomical studies, George Stubbs (1724–1806) was fascinated by horses. This handsome book presents for the first time the wide range of his equine imagery, from refined portraits of racehorses to violent scenes of horses attacked by lions in the wild.
Taking full account of the associations and status of the “noble horse” in eighteenth-century Britain and the colorful world of its devotees—both high and low—the authors examine Stubbs’s work from different points of view and offer many fresh interpretations. Malcolm Warner discusses how horses were regarded in Britain in Stubbs’s time, the unexpected connection between his horse-and-lion compositions and the creation of the English thoroughbred, and his classicism. Robin Blake examines the young Whig noblemen who were Stubbs’s first patrons, the grooms, jockeys, trainers, and other attendants who appear in his horse portraits, and his curious dealings with the Prince of Wales. The book also includes an essay by conservators Lance Mayer and Gay Myers on Stubbs’s experiments with wax and enamel.
For admirers of Stubbs’s art, eighteenth-century English painting, and horses, this book is an essential addition to their bookshelves.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome!.......2007-01-25
This book is outstanding. The plates are all in color and large enough to see easily. Stubbs anatomical drawings are very detailed. I had been having trouble understanding how horses moved before I saw those drawings. Seeing the skeleton and muscles helped considerably. When I took it to class and showed my professor, she got online and bought one for herself. She draws/paints horses beautifully and owns horses herself.
Reading the background information about George Stubbs and the symbolism used in his paintings was very interesting and educational.
Stubbs & the Horse.......2006-11-11
Excellent purchase. I saw this book in the National Gallery, London having just viewed Whistle Jacket. I wanted it because my own passion lies in painting Horses. The book is full of fascinating information on Stubbs himself, his love of horses and has his excellent illustrations / studies of equine anatomy. A useful and beautiful book filled with his striking paintings.
A BEAUTIFUL VOLUME FOR EQUINE ENTHUSIASTS.......2004-12-01
Although arguably the greatest painter of horses to date, British artist George Stubbs (1724 - 1806) would never imagine the prices his canvases would some day command. Some 40 years ago the late Paul Mellon added to his collection of Stubbs's work with a check for tens of thousands of dollars, today anyone lucky enough to come across an available Stubbs had better have a million to spare. London's National Gallery paid 11 million pounds for a life-sized painting of the thoroughbred "Whistlejacket," a monumental work breathtaking in majesty and beauty.
Those fortunate enough to visit the Fort Worth's Kimbell Art Museum though early February of this year will be able to see not only this incredible piece but the finest works of Stubbs in the first major collection to fully capture his genius as a painter of horses.
Almost as good as being at the Kimbell is leafing through "Stubbs & The Horse," an exquisite 256 page volume holding 200 illustrations. Authors Malcolm Warner and Robin Blake present a comprehensive portrait of Stubbs, as Warner discusses the low regard in which the British held horses in Stubbs's time, the surprising connection the artist's horse-and-lion compositions, and the evolution of the English thoroughbred. Offering a different perspective Blake tells us of the Whig nobles who were Stubbs's initial patrons and offers insights into the inclusion of the grooms, jockeys, trainers and other figures in the artist's paintings.
As Warner notes in his Preface, "The horse was at once the mainstay of Stubbs's success and a problem for his reputation. In his lifetime he attracted much praise for his abilities as a painter of horses.......But this won him little prestige in his profession." In fact. During Stubbs's time British artistic tastes ran to paintings of historical events, myths, the Bible, and allegory. A painter of horses was rather low in popular opinion.
Nonetheless, Stubbs persisted in his study of equine anatomy eventually rendering remarkable ink drawings which presaged his later paintings. He would later take these anatomical drawings to London where they were well received, and resulted in several commissions. Eventually he acquired an enviable reputation as an equestrian painter and earned a comfortable living from equine enthusiasts.
Stubbs lived to the age of 81, and died in 1806. Throughout his life many considered his incredibly beautiful lifelike work to be second class. History has deemed it quite differently.

Book Description
Though the English artist George Stubbs (1724-1806) was once dismissed as "merely" an animal painter, his familiar subjects--racehorses, lions, and scenes of gentlemanly hunting and shooting--are highly popular today. This detailed study of Stubbs's work reaffirms his importance and reveals him to be a progressive artist whose concerns with both scientific discovery and art history set him at odds with the artistic establishment of his day.

In a period when access to fine paintings was restricted, Stubbs's reputation was spread chiefly through his engravings. This catalogue raisonneacute; is the only single volume to contain all Stubbs's known engravings and provides a complete record of prints made by others after his works. Introductory essays consider Stubbs's relationships with other artists, particularly his engravers, and examine how the prints were originally marketed.Part 1 covers the more important prints issued during Stubbs's lifetime, some of which are published here for the first time. Each of the 218 entries is fully illustrated and accompanied by comparative material.Part 2 comprises 440 supplementary entries and indicates the nature and extent of Stubbs's posthumous reputation. This book also is the first substantial review of the work of a major 18th century British painter by reference to the important, but neglected, medium of reproductive prints.

Book Description
Known in his life as "Mr. Stubbs the horse painter", it is only in the last fifty years that the art world has rejected this derogatory assessment of this versatile painter, illustrator, engraver, and outstanding chronicler of nature. Lavish illustrations - covering the full range of his work from the celebrated horse images to portraits, paintings of wild animals, anatomical engravings and experimental work on ceramics- reveal the artist's genius and show why he can rightfully stand beside Turner and William Blake as an artist sure of his own particular vision.

Overview of works by George Stubbs and excellant read..........2001-07-19
Being an equine artist professionally myself, I purchased this book for my collection and have used it as a source in my MFA Thesis. Not only is the book superbly illuminated with many full page color plates and detail shots of individual paintings, but also goes fairly in debth into the artist's life, working methods, restoration of his works, information about his clients, the horses he painted, and their owners. George Stubbs is also cited as a fine portrait painter of people, as well as other animal studies, with examples of these works and mythological themes depicted through the evolution of his pieces. The back portion of the book is a delightful section that shows images both by other artists predating his time doing simular work, his contemporaries working at the same time, as well as artists later influeneced by George Stubbs. This book is a fine addition to anyone's library, whether you be an admirer of horses, or a serious student of art history.
Beautiful!.......1999-12-26
As a Stubbs fan, I love the variety of work presented in this book; it ranges from the anatomical references to portraits to the more familiar sporting art to mythologically influenced pieces. It also includes a section on how Stubbs influenced later artists.
Throughout the art is enhanced by the author's words. The back flap explains that she has considerable equine experience; however there is one very noticeable gafe. When describing the painting featured on the cover of the book, (also found on the front endsheet and within) the author states that the chestnut Arabian is "badly marked with unsightly white spots. These spots show that, in the past, the horse has had severe saddle sores.... It seems extraordinary that these valuable animals should have been exposed to such poor management." These statements are made in error. The horse in question displays the characteristics of a form of overo pinto called sabino. It is fairly common in chestnut Arabians of the present day, and the horse in question's high stockings and white lower lip, present with the body spots, undoubtedly make him a sabino. Therefore the spots are not saddle sores but rather pinto markings that were part of him since birth. An experienced equestrian should know better.
