    Book Description

Colonel Cody and the Flying Cathedral is the fascinating and bizarre history of Samuel Franklin Cody, who in his early years worked the same cattle trails as Buffalo Bill, played the same Dodge City roulette tables as Wyatt Earp, and competed with the legendary Annie Oakley for the title of King of the Wild West sharpshooters. But his later life took a startling turn. While performing in England, Cody became a passionate kite-builder and flyer, and at the apex of his career, fashioned a vast airplane dubbed "the Flying Cathedral," and with it went on to become the first man to fly in England.AUTHORBIO: Garry Jenkins is the author of five previous books, including The Beautiful Team, about Brazilian soccer. He lives with his family in London.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating from beginning to end.......2001-10-01

This book is really a GREAT read! It tells the story of Samuel Cody from his days as a cowboy out West through his life in England as a "wild west" showman and his improbable role in the history of aviation. The book is fascinating reading both because Jenkins writes so well and also because he has done enough research to fill in the story with lots of detail. By the end of the book you'll be on the edge of your seat following Cody's incredible exploits. You'll also come away with a real feel for the dangerous and exhilirating world of aviation in those first few years of it's existence. It's a shame Cody and the other very early kite-to-airplane pioneers have been so overshadowed by the aviators who survived into the 20's.

          Book Description

The Guide to Living with HIV Infection is the most complete source of medical, emotional, social, and practical advice available for those infected with HIV and their loved ones. Developed at the Johns Hopkins AIDS Clinic, the guide provides essential information for making decisions about treatment and testing in a world transformed by new research and pharmacotherapy.

In this thoroughly updated sixth edition, Dr. John Bartlett and Ann K. Finkbeiner address the latest information about risks of transmission, viral mutations that confer drug resistance, and new, rapid, HIV testing. They offer guidelines for Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART), a therapy protocol that has dramatically increased life expectancy for HIV-positive people. They describe how to follow HAART and when to change drug regimens, the symptoms of and treatments for HAART side effects, and the costs of and insurance coverage for HAART. They also outline the possibilities for a diagnosis of "no detectable virus."

Accompanied by updated references and resources, the sixth edition of The Guide to Living with HIV Infection offers new hope for people living with a virus that once left no hope at all.

          5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!.......2003-09-10

As a PWA (Person living with AIDS) and a professional that works in the private Social Services sector specializing in HIV/AIDS patient care, I highly recommend this book!

This book can function as both a personal and/or professional guide to the disease, the services and benefits that someone living with HIV/AIDS may qualify for, and a general overview of some of the drugs and treatment options.

This book is also a wonderful tool to give to friends and family should someone living with HIV/AIDS choose to disclose their Sero-status.

          Highly recommended without any reservation!

4 out of 5 stars Good, but dry............2003-02-13

I agree with most of what the other reviewers are saying, but I found it a bit dry, and somewhat frightening if anyone reading it was just diagnosed with HIV; flipping through it can fill you with "doom and gloom".....

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and thorough.......1999-07-13

An excellent guide which explains how HIV is transmitted, evaluates available treatment and prevention, provides counsel on coping with the emotional effects of the infection, and addresses financial and legal concerns. New to this revised and updated edition are detailed discussions of new drugs, special considerations for women, and recent data on CF4 cell counts and viral load.

4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive. Everything you might & might not want to know.......1998-12-01

As someone only recently becoming interested in HIV this book covered alot of ground, including the medical course of the disease, the emotional effects on those with the infection and those caring for people with it and legal matters. Designed more as a manual, where certain chapters can be skipped if not relative to a persons needs, it's structure still led easily from one section to the next. Accounts from people living with the virus and their cargivers add a human touch which can be associated with by almost anyone. A very good book for anyone coming in blind to the subject. Interesting, thought provoking and intellegent...

5 out of 5 stars Essential reading for anyone infected with HIV.......1998-06-20

This up-to-date 1998 book is absolutely essential reading for anyone with HIV or AIDS. The book not only addresses the medical aspects of this virus, but also such issues as understanding and communicating about HIV, how to deal with HIV's possible effects on the body, insuarance and HIV and guidance for making legal, financial and medical decisions. No book written prior to 1998 offers current enough information about this virus. For this year, this book can serve as a vital referenc manual for those with HIV or those who love someone with HIV.

            Book Description

An American Bounty comes from The Culinary Institute of America, the country's most prestigious teaching facility for professional chefs. A companion to The American Bounty restaurant on the Institute's beautiful campus at Hyde Park, New York, this book is a reflection of America's exciting contemporary food style. Immigrants have always defined what American food would and could be, but we are only now, after more than three centuries, beginning to arrive at a true melting pot cuisine.

An American Bounty offers a terrific overview of that style. It is expansive, generous enough to embrace traditional favorites and foreign influences. Here are stir fries and fajitas; ham with red eye gravy and blue cheese polenta; Navajo fry bread and seafood gumbo; mustard fried chicken and gnocchi; triple chocolate brownies and Shaker lemon pie. The recipes were developed by Culinary Institute teachers and chefs for home cooks with average skills and they are presented with gorgeous photographs that reflect the important place of food in lifestyles centered on family meals and simple, but sophisticated entertaining. Nutritional analysis is provided for every recipe.

4 out of 5 stars An outstanding story of the struggle for survival in the wilderness .......2006-11-24

The Monarch Of Deadman Bay is an outstanding story of nature and survival. The format and prose are splendid in this story as it follows the life of a Kodiak Bear. It begins at the time of his conception and follows him through his rise in status as the dominant bear in the Deadman Bay area on the southern coast of Kodiak Island and finally to his death.

This is a wildlife story and though there are some references to hunting it doesn't take an anti-hunting or a pro-hunting stance. The story is told from the bear's viewpoint. It's a story of the daily struggle for survival in the wilderness. Told with outstanding and sometimes brutal descriptions of both the various wildlife species and the the harsh environment that they survive in.

The story is grand and it is obvious that Roger Caras has a vast knowledge of wildlife habits and habitat. He also clearly understands how harsh and violent life can be in even the most beautiful areas of the vast wilderness areas of the world.

If there is one criticism that I have it's that Caras occassionally uses complex terms where simpler words would be just as effective and more readable. A story should flow and be very easy to follow and not be a tribute to the writers vocabulary. My opinion? If you like stories about the environment, raw and natural. Read this one and overlook the "Ten dollar words" (they're not on every page anyway). Enjoy the story for it's own sake.

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE BOOK FOR FAIR ISLE KNITTERS.......2004-05-03

This book is a must have, well worth the price. First it takes you through the history of Fair Isle and The Shetland Islands so beautifully you feel like you are there, or wish you were! The next chapter has a good selection of easy to follow charts. They go from basic through to complex, which you can mix and match for your own unique designs. Then she discusses colour schemes; each jumper has a photo of the scenery that inspired the colours, to bring you inspiration. Next are techniques. She has simple diagrams that are easy to understand, showing all the techniques you need to knit fairisle. Her instructions were so simple I have now decided to knit on 4 needles! I have also learnt continental style knitting, as this technique is a much easier way of Fairisle knitting. Other techniques include steeks (making cardigans by knitting in round); knitting up stitches, corrugated ribbing, stranded knitting and lots more. Then there are 14 of her divine patterns to knit. The last section is design she walks you through instructions of knitting your own cap, tammy and gansey. I wouldn't part with my copy for all the tea in china!

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Reference.......2003-07-05

This stellar book manages to answer every question I ever had about Fair Isles Knitting, as well as a whole host of questions I hadn't even realized I should have been asking. Profusely illustrated with breathtaking color photographs, this book fills me with the mad inspiration to create every single time I open it. The charted designs are abundant and varied, the technical information is incomparable, and Starmore does an excellent job of making this highly detailed and specialized form of knitting accessible to beginners and experienced knitters alike. If you want to expand your knowledge of stranded multicolor knitting, this book is a MUST HAVE.

                          5 out of 5 stars A must for knitters.......2003-04-09

If you own ONE book on colorwork, this might just be the best choice. While Starmore deals with Fair Isle style knitting only, the techniques are useful for all kinds of knitting design.

In addition to the history of Fair Isle knitting, Starmore explains the use of OXO patterns mixed with "peerie" or bands of small patterns that are mixed with the larger patterns and provide a pleasing rhythm to the design. The fact that only two colors are used per row is hard to believe when you look at how Starmore mixes subtle color changes to yield some amazing results. She also shows the inspiration for the colorways, from a handful of wet sea pebbles, to a moor landscape, to a flea market display of bric-a-brac. You can find colorways all around you once you get an eye for how Starmore looks at the world.

The book has useful charts for OXO and peerie patterns and a section on how to construct classic pullovers, vests and cardigans. This is one of my most favorite knitting books.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding fair isle primer.......2000-05-19

This book will lead you through the history of fair isle knitting, designing, pattern and color selection, knitting with two or more colors, steeks, and finishing. Fair isle is magnificent and quite unlike anything else I'd done before. The concept of intricate color patterns done seamlessly with Shetland wool was and is quite appealing. I was able, with this book to become proficient in this marvelous style of knitting, creating a masterpiece my first go-round (pun unintended!). It also includes outstanding patterns. I literally wore out my first copy, the pages finally came loose from the binding and I am now on copy #2. I own quite a few books on knitting but consider this my fair isle reference.

                          5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......1999-07-29

This one of my favorite knitting books, period. I have been knitting (self-taught) for about 20 years, and I seldom use a any kind of written pattern. I decide on yarn and wearer and just begin making the sweater. So here is were this book comes in: instructions on planning or designing a sweater (wouldnt even have to be one done in Fair Isle style); page after page of Fair Isle design elements arranged by SIZE; and beautiful photo of incredible Shetland yarn color combinations. There are printed project patterns, a nice selection too--I just do that sort of thing. And I also enjoyed the history of Fair Isle style and the possible origin of design elements. I keep returning to this book for the charted Fair Isle elements and color inspiration.

"We are the first generation of mothers to want the best of both worlds, whether or not we work. We want to be able to take care of our own needs and pursue our personal interests in a wide variety of activities inside and outside the home - while we're being great moms." ~Sheryl Gurrentz

While many books on motherhood focus on what you "should do," this book focuses more on how to make becoming a mother an enjoyable experience for YOU.

Is this possible? Can you really make time for yourself and feel guilt-free?

Sheryl Gurrentz has helped thousands of parents redefine their goals. She believes you can have it all. As a trained ?doula,? she has experience couching women before, during and after childbirth. She wants you to know what it will feel like to be a mom and how you can feel good.

She also shows you how to choose baby products, create harmony in your life, make time for yourself, get things done, balance responsibilities and make wise career choices.

How to prepare yourself for nursing. I had no idea there were breast shields.
There is information in this book, I have never read anywhere else.

The "Deciding What You Need" section is extremely good. Sheryl also explains how various items are more practical than others. This will save you money!

Would make a great baby shower gift.

A look of skepticism crossed my face as a friend handed me this book to read. Being a new, sleep-deprived, working mom, the last thing I thought I could find was time for a little quiet reading, but once I started flipping the pages I was hooked. Sheryl Gurrentz brings her own wisdom as a mother to a fresh new look on parenthood. She uses a mix of humor and real-life testimonials that not only provide good information but priceless wisdom and advice for surviving the many adventures of motherhood. The book talks about everything from dealing with the physical changes after childbirth to evaluating your career and life balance. It is packed with important advice including a resource guide in the back of the book containing contact information for manufactures, organizations and associations that you may need during that first year of motherhood. This book would help any new mom get through the twists and turns ahead. It is a book that new moms will use and treasure.

Especially recommended for women who seek to combine child care with career employment, Gurrentz demystifies early motherhood by covering a diversity of relevant subjects such as how much the body hurts even weeks after giving birth; what to do when feeling jealous that your partner goes to work while you are preempted by child care responsibilities for a new born; how to get a spouse to act like a parent and not just an assistant helper; how to protect modesty while publicly breast feeding; and what to do when life with a new baby doesn't turn out quite like you thought it would! Highly recommended reading, The Guilt-Free Guide To Your New Life As A Mom is an invaluable preparation while waiting for baby's arrival, and even more welcome when trying to adjust to baby after she or he has arrived to enliven, enhance, bewilder, and change your life!!

5 out of 5 stars I wish I had this book when my kids were little!.......2001-02-05

I bought this book for my sister who just had a baby. After reading through it, I am green with envy that she will have access to all the useful and practical information in this book! I had to learn so much through trial and error (the emphasis on error). I would have saved myself so much time and energy had I had a book like this one! Do you know how long it took me to figure out how to go out of the house with my baby and how much time I spent feeling guilty for not feeling totally, unconditionally fullfilled by motherhood?

I will buy this book for everyone I know who is having a baby!!

                            Book Description

One of the most capable of the late nineteenth century western artists, Frank Paul Sauerwein (1871-1910) is also one of the most quietly admired. Upon Sauerwein's untimely death, friends were many, family few, only an ageing father. And like even the best of friends, they had their respective lives to lead. There were no sons or daughters to continue that begun, no wife to continue the mission embarked upon, no war chest to promote his works. Records lost, diaries gone, paintings placed to thwart the attic's draft, writings long since misplaced. And so for nearly a hundred years, the light has been dimly lit, perhaps as Sauerwein would have wanted it, yet history has a way of locating those pilgrims of the past who in retrospect offered a vibrant message and timeless images.

Frank Paul Sauerwein, the Biography, brings to light an impressive quantity of information on the artist as well as an in-depth analysis of his works from his early, middle and late periods. It features in color many of his works that have never been published and focuses on his seminal and epic paintings, many of which have rarely been seen. Several additional archival and original photographs of both Sauerwein and his works have likewise been located and reproduced. Additionally the reader will find critical information on the artist and related data including a chronology, a listing of known paintings and a discussion of certain of the techniques utilized by this master artist.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful, earthen tones.......2002-11-08

In a stunning edition limited to only 500 copies, Frank Paul Sauerwein is the result of a collaborative effort by Michael R. Grauer (Rio Grande Trust), Elaine Maher Harrison (Rio Grande Press), and Steve Holmes (Burro Alley) and provides the reader with a vividly enhanced biography and analysis of Frank Paul Sauerwein, a master painter of the American Southwest who lived from 1871-1910. Sauerwein's brief life, brilliant career, and untimely death are explored in this extensive study of his work, which also showcases his memorable artworks in full color. The powerful, earthen tones and Sauerwein's human and realistic portrayal of Native American subjects in his art mark this limited edition volume as an unforgettable biography and a strongly recommended addition to American Art History reference collections.
