Book Description

Ron Maxwell, producer of the acclaimed movie Gettysburg and director of Gods & Generals, has encouraged the creation of this anthology that captures and explores one of the major themes of Gods & Generals—devout, godly men and women on both sides of the Civil War fervently believed that their cause was not only just but that they enjoyed God's favor.

In addition to several articles contributed by Ron Maxwell and commentary from various Civil War experts, the book is comprised of a montage of letters, diary entries, articles, and observations from the people who participated in the conflict.

5 out of 5 stars More than a companion to the movie.......2007-08-09

Fans of this movie, and of Shaara's book, can appreciate this book as a companion piece, but it's far more than that. Faith and prayer carried Americans on both sides through the heartache of separation from loved ones, the savagery of the battlefield, the horror of prisoner of war camps. Any Christian can appreciate the stories of faith and hope that so characterized this tragic period of America's history, and benefit from the examples of honor and character that seem, sadly, to be lost among leaders today.

A must-have for fans of the movie and book, students of the period, and people of faith.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Christian faith in the Civil War.......2003-07-29

Ted Baehr and Susan Wales have compiled this book that gives biographical sketches of just about every character in Ron Maxwell's film Gods and Generals. This book is unique in that it gives attention to how the Christian faith of these people influenced their lives, particularly during the war. It is written with brevity and is full of quotes from their letters. This book is important because a person's faith will influence what he does in life, to varying degrees. That is why I feel it is important to study this aspect of their character and to this end I am particularly grateful to Ted Baehr and Susan Wales for putting this book together. It will also serve as an introduction to many of these characters for the reader who may be studying these people for the first time. Each piece in this book has footnotes that will guide the reader to other sources that they can read if they would like to study a person or topic further. Ron Maxwell provides a very insightful foreward to this book in which he tells of his conviction to portray history accurately. The book has many nice photos from the film as well as photos and drawings from the Civil War era. 18 people contributed to this book, historian Gabor Boritt among them. Talk-show host and columnist Les Kinsolving contributed a piece on William Barksdale, to whom he is related. He also plays William Barksdale in Gods and Generals and Gettysburg. My favorite chapter is the one on Stonewall Jackson and his wife Anna. It is full of lengthy quotes from their letters to each other. The back of the book has an appendix that lists the cast of the film. It also has a note about each of the contributors to this book. By all means, get this book and keep it handy on your coffeetable. And get the Gods and Generals DVD to go with it.

5 out of 5 stars Faith in Gods and Generals.......2003-07-27

Having published a review of the film "Gods and Generals," I found this book an interesting companion to it. This beautifully illustrated anthology provides insights into individuals caught up on both sides of the Civil War and how their faith guided them. The excellent Forword by Ron Maxwell is a must read. It makes a great gift book.

5 out of 5 stars Some fascinating reading!.......2003-07-25

This book was written to be a companion of the 2003 movie, Gods and Generals. Covering many of the historical figures from that movie, the book tells about them, and particularly about their faith in God, and how that affected what they did. Filled with many great pictures and illustration, this book makes for some fascinating reading!

I must admit that I really enjoyed this book. The authors' contention that religious faith is usually given short shrift in most history book is spot on, and that does go along way to making this book practically unique! But, I must say that more is covered in this book than religious subjects; for example, one of my favorite stories told in the book is the story entitled "Grandmother's Quilt," which tells the story of a quilt and the love of two people.

Overall, I found this to be a great book! I highly enjoyed it, and I highly recommend it to you.

5 out of 5 stars excellent addition to any historical, biographical library.......2003-05-28

Having read many Civil War histories and biographies, I was surprised to find much information I had never seen before on prominent, as well as lesser known characters from that period, particularly as it pertained to their spiritual lives. That issue is sometimes briefly touched upon, but never in such depth and personal details, many of which come from their own hand, including letters, diaries, etc. It also gives a lot of attention to what the women of the time were thinking, saying, and writing - something usually missing from most military biographies. It is very poignant to read the accounts from godly men on both sides of the conflict who at first believed that God was behind their cause, and then when victory was not as quick and certain as predicted, began to have doubts, and finally to conclude that ultimately, God was working through the conflict to bring about His own sovereign purpose which was far and above any human goal. Those who gave this book a negative review reveal their own bias and the reason why most authors leave this type of information out of their books. They view it as being insignificant to themselves, and therefore fail to understand the impact it has had throughout history.

5 out of 5 stars Very, very impressive.......2006-08-11

I think it took a lot of guts for an upholster to write a book like this. I was very impressed that someone without any experience could write so well. The editing may not have been perfect, but I don't think the "Divine" expects perfection (which the book is very clear about). Anyone expecting God to edit His own work is just plain ridiculous. The content was extremely enlightening, and definitely God sent. I hope this author continues to write, I think she has an important message.

1 out of 5 stars This needs edited badly. .......2006-08-11

Just on the back cover of this book, there are six errors of spelling, punctuation, and usage. If this book was truly from the Divine, surely He would edit his work. The fluidity of reading this book was sketchy at best, and positively rambling at worst. In order to affect people, a book must be tightly edited; that demands respect. I think winning the game of life must not require these demands, but reading the book does.

5 out of 5 stars It filled me with confidence.......2006-08-07

My father died last year . He was my best friend. After reading this book I stopped blaming God and I started praising his name. Now I know that my life has meaning even if I can't talk to my dad and receive the encouragement that I need to live. Now I feel like I can let go of the past and march forward with confidence so I can win my game of life just like my dad won his.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2006-08-02

Demons and angels, self-writing typewriters, elaborate games. You have to read it for yourself. There is not a dull moment.

5 out of 5 stars Best book ever! .......2006-08-02

Best book ever! I am raising three kids, who are three and under. This book helped me deal with the frustration and loneliness of motherhood by encouraging me not to be so hard on myself. I realized that as long as I was doing my best, that was good enough, and I would succeed the tasks God had set out for me.

1 out of 5 stars Sheeplike followers of the drug-company bought ADA.......2004-02-25

There's an old vaudeville joke: "Patient: Doctor, doctor! It hurts whenever I do THIS. Doctor: Well, don't DO THAT!"

When we eat carbs, our blood sugar goes up. The solution, according to the ADA, is to eat lots of carbs, then take drugs to bring our BS down. No wonder; the ADA is financed mainly by drug companies. Pecuniam sequi!

The simple, logical approach is NOT to eat things that raise our carbohydrates, as Dr. Bernstein has demonstrated. However, such simple logic doesn't boost drug companies' profits, nor can one claim it on one's insurance.

      3 out of 5 stars Nothing new.......2003-06-08

There is nothing special in this book for Diabetes. It just suggests moderation dietary intake following of famous soon to be changed food pyramid with emphasis on eating heavy starch. Where soon after my brother eats potato his blood sugar level goes through the sky. There are nice suggested meal plans but and data about foods. I was expecting more stringer diet I can take it but I am concerned like "eat fat loose fat diet ".

3 out of 5 stars Overdose on carbohydrates............2002-10-15

Oh what is a person to do. One the one, hand we are offered diets high in protein that cause weight loss but taken to an extreme (devoid of carbohydrates) can injure the body. On the other hand, we have DIABETES MEAL PLANNING MADE EASY by Hope S. Warshaw that suggests we overdose on carbohydrates. In the end, each of us must decide individually which plan works best.

I am using the INSULIN RESISTANCE DIET by Hart and Grossman to help me get my life in order, i.e. get my insulin regulated. The "weak" spells and almost fainting from hunger syndrome I used to have when I ate less protein (as advocated by Warshaw) are gone. On the other hand, I am not on the high protein diet advocated by some. I am losing weight and regaining the spring I used to have in my step (it's easier when you weigh less). When I lay on my side, I have to use a pillow to support my arm since the cutaneous layer around my middle no longer is large enough to serve this purpose.

Whereas Ms. Warshaw considers carbohydrates the most important food group (placing them at the bottom of her food pyramid with 6+ servings a day), Hart and Grossman place water at their base with 8+ servings a day. Next come vegetables on both pyramids, but Warshaw links vegetables (3-5 servings) and fruits (2-4 servings), whereas Hart and Grossman show only vegetables (unlimited servings but at least 3 per day). At the next level, Warshaw shows milk (2-3 servings) and meat, cheese, fish combined (2-3 servings), compared with Hart and Grossman's "high protein foods (eight servings a day including 2-5 servings of dairy products). At level 4, in case you've been counting, Warshaw shows fats, sweets, and alcohol with NO servings. Level 4 for Hart and Grossman is high carbohydrate foods with the restriction "Eat no more than two servings at any one time. Be sure to eat at least two servings of fruit daily." Fats and oils are the 5th level for Hart and Grossman with the words "keep to a minimum" and "include some good fats in liquid vegetable form." There is no fifth dimension for Ms. Warshaw's diet.

Hart and Grossman say their approach works for diabetics, as well as pre-diabetics and I have found this to be true for me. I am not about to go back on a high carbohydrate diet for anyone, not even the ADA. Maybe, just maybe, the high carbohydrate approach does not work for all women. A key aspect of Hart and Grossman is not only more protein, but a concept they call "linking" where one never eats a carbohydrate without a protein of greater value. Also, drinking lots of water and limiting carbohydrates to 30 grams per two-hour period is helpful.

Hart and Grossman cover research extant at the time they wrote their book (2001) and Warshaw's book reflects the thinking of the ADA extant at the time she published her book (2000). Hart and Grossman have been conducting clinical trials and base their results on their own experiences with clients as well as much scholarly work. The bottom line is if you have diabetes or think you're in the zone, you'll have to do some experimenting. What works for one person may not work for another. As for me, I'm going with Hart and Grossman, because it works.

4 out of 5 stars A Must for Every Cook Creating for a Diabetic.......2002-04-08

This book is a primo resource book written in laymen's terms. It is equally informative for those very familiar with what food pyramids and healthy eating are all about, as well for those who may be a novice to the subject. The book is organized in such a way to make quick and easy reference something you want to do to refresh your memory once you've read through it and gotten the gist of the goals. Keep it nearby your favorite chair or on your cook book shelf and use it when you make up your grocery list. "De-mystify" is an over used word but really describes this book. Best of all, it's backed by the American Diabetes Association and thus, one of the most reliable for this subject. I bought my first copy nearly a hear ago as a newly diagnosed Type II diabetic and have bought other copies for friends, recommended it to others, and refer to it very often, still. I feel it was very instrumental in helping me to obtain my hard won goal of great sugar and weight control (sugar formerly 235, since I've been following the book it's mid-80's and I lost 44 pounds in about 4-5 months). I am a walking advertisement for why you should buy - but most importantly - USE this book.

There are many things about this book that are great; the stories, the lay out, the quality of the book itself, but what I love the most are the recipes. I would have paid double what this book is listed at just because I love it so much. Its a book that I will have to order more copies of and hand out as gifts. Don't pass this one up. Its a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars The Old West Baking Book.......2000-08-05

This is an awesome book! So much more than just a "cookbook" it contains little bits of history woven throughout, along with many detailed descriptions and explanations on how and why things were done. I also enjoyed the wonderful pen and ink illustrations. The recipes are great and easy to follow. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for original, old-time recipes!

5 out of 5 stars Great book, even for armchair bakers!.......1999-09-12

I adore this cookbook! Spiral-bound, lie-flat pages; many gorgeous color photographs of the baked goods as well as historical photographs of cowboys cooking and eating; and a great layout are just the beginning. Every single recipe has a several-paragraph commentary about how the recipe came into being or the differences between the original Old West and updated recipes. Scattered throughout the book are features on various topics such as cooking equipment in the Old West, chuck wagons, and availability and use of various foods. I also enjoyed the uniqueness of the recipes. Never before have I seen recipes for green tomato pie, gems (similar to muffins), or spotted pup (a pudding). However, the book doesn't neglect more common fare such as sourdough bread, cherry cobbler, bread pudding, biscuits, etc. Additional features include an Old West cooking dictionary, a comprehensive index, and a bibliography of books about food and life in the Old West. If you love baking or the Old West, you MUST get your own copy, because I'm not going to lend mine to anyone!!!

5 out of 5 stars Bob Wiseman - author, reviewer.......1996-08-26

Get out your Dutch oven. Find a ceramic crock with a tight lid. You'll need both when you open this wonderful cookbook. Of course the oven is for the baking and the crock is for the sourdough starter you'll learn to make. I couldn't believe the Old West recipes that were in this cookbook. I immediately bought several books as gifts for my relatives and friends. Walters has dug up so many memorable and forgotten recipes that it's like finding the Mother Lode of pioneer vittles. Houn' Ears & Whirlups, Splatter Dabs, Oatmeal Pudding, three different sourdough starters, Railroad Cake, they're all packed into 170 pages. In addition, the book has excellent historical and contemporary photographs and informative inserts. The Old West Baking Book is a truly a treasure found.

Since ancient times, humans have sought ways to preserve the ephemeral beauty of nature. The centuries-old technique of nature printing yields some of the most exquisite results, appearing something like a cross between pressed-flower pictures and rubber-stamped designs. And the process itself somewhat resembles a hybrid of the two crafts: plant materials are gathered and pressed for a few minutes, then inked and covered with a sheet of paper or fabric to transfer the image. Unlike pressed-flower pictures, which require relatively flat blossoms, nature prints can utilize more extravagant blooms like roses and carnations, which can be printed without pressing. Other natural materials also work: fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, leaves, seashells, feathers, even fish and spiderwebs.

Laura Donnelly Bethmann provides solid background on the basics of the technique, as well as an interesting history of the craft. She explains how to gather and prepare specimens, offers a variety of printing methods, and discusses design principles. The final chapter comprises about a dozen simple projects, including gift-wrap, notecards, and T-shirts. Bethmann's own nature prints as well as those of several other artists are scattered throughout the pages; one wishes that more of these lovely, delicate artworks were more prominently featured in this otherwise worthwhile book. --Amy Handy

Already known and appreciated for his books on borders and Sissinghurst, Tony Lord reveals yet another area of expertise here in Designing with Roses. A homage to "the queen of flowers," this is also a plea for an end to its misuse, with Lord demonstrating its versatility in borders or pots, on walls and fences, alone or in main or supporting roles. These sweeping concepts are then fleshed out with detailed information on shape, color, scent, foliage, immunity levels, form, and flowering times. He writes for a worldwide audience, taking into account local climates and native plants, and his attention to detail continues beyond the plants themselves. When he looks at pergolas, for instance, he is informative about possible sites, materials, proportions, and construction.

Designing with Roses's well-researched, flowing prose is interspersed with the author's own stunning photographs. It will captivate readers of all levels of expertise, to whom Lord throws out a general challenge to develop a practical aesthetic of roses that balances design with nature. Finally, the bibliography, international list of nurseries, explanation of zones, and invaluable list of strain characteristics leave the reader full of inspiration and equipped with the tools for pursuing the dream. --Fiona Murphy

                Book Description

Media portrayals of beaming mothers and happy, gurgling babies tell only part of the story. Seasoned parents know that the fantasy of perfect motherhood is just that, and that there are enormous changes in all areas of life attendant on having and bringing up children. Thinking Pregnant is for women (and their partners) who know they want to have children but also want to prepare for the reality of the event. Megan Steelman goes beyond the standard medical advice found in many guides. She discusses the shifts in self-image and in one's body that pregnancy and motherhood bring, analyzes potential sources of conflict that a baby can introduce into a relationship, and elucidates the myriad alterations in identity and lifestyle when, in her words, "the new normal" takes over.

4 out of 5 stars The other book.......2002-04-16

This book is the other book in a collection for hopeful parents. It is not the medical reference or the parenting book. It is for hopeful parents who are interested in discovering and discussing the new world of pregnancy. Megan Steelman includes chapters on financial considerations, healthy lifestyle, non-traditional parenting, and dads. There are worksheets at the end of each chapter to stimulate thought and provide planning guidance.

I received the book as a gift from a friend who has two children. I am in the over-35 age group and found lots of useful information in this book.

                I highly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Probably better if you or your partner is truly conflicted.........2002-03-13

I am contemplating having children but am not actually embarking yet, and I'd hoped for this book to be more along the lines of a "here are some things about parenthood that you might not know" type of book. I am not conflicted about having children at all, just a bit indecisive about the timing. I didn't find much in this book that I hadn't read elsewhere. If you or your partner is truly conflicted about whether or not you want children, this might be a great book to help you articulate what your concerns are, or help you realize that maybe you are prepared, and just understandably nervous. if you're looking for peeks into the lives of parents, I'd suggest "Mothers Who Think" by the Salon.com editors, or "Breeder" by the editors of hipmama.com.

5 out of 5 stars HAVING SEX?? READ THIS BOOK!.......2002-01-25

Everyone over the age of 18 needs to read this book. For that matter, anyone having sex ought to have a copy. Do any of us really know what's around the corner when we conceive a new life? Megan Steelman's book takes over where our mothers left off (if only we had listened to them...) It includes every little tidbit of inquiry about how life is going to look on the other side of pregnancy, and answers all those stupid questions we're too embarrassed to ask our doctors, mothers, or friends. Reading this book is like talking to your best friend, with permission to ask every question that pops into your head. I wish I had read this book 20 years ago before the first glimmers of our kids.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing and Informative.......2001-12-20

Megan Steelman is amazing! She is a wealth of knowledge on the topic of pregnancy. As somebody who works with new parents I recommend this book highly.

5 out of 5 stars Lives up to it's title!.......2001-10-25

This book is really great. It is easy to read and gives information not only on the physical changes and the how to's of pregnancy, but it also covers more about the emotional and life altering experience that people go through and the adjustments needed when you become pregnant and have a baby. I highly recommend this book.

She found the diary and brought the world a message of love and hope.

It seems as if we are never far from Miep's thoughts....Yours, Anne

For the millions moved by Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, here at last is Miep's own astonishing story. For more than two years, Miep Gies and her husband helped hide the Franks from the Nazis. Like thousands of unsung heroes of the Holocaust, they risked their lives each day to bring food, news, and emotional support to the victims.

From her own remarkable childhood as a World War I refugee to the moment she places a small, red-orange, checkered diary -- Anne's legacy -- in Otto Frank's hands, Miep Gies remembers her days with simple honesty and shattering clarity. Each page rings with courage and heartbreaking beauty.

5 out of 5 stars "Not a day goes by...".......2007-07-13

Miep Gies does not consider herself to be a hero, although anyone familiar with her story would probably consider her one. In "Anne Frank Remembered" Gies (along with Alison Leslie Gold) tells of the role she played in hiding the Frank family in Amsterdam during WWII. She sets the stage with her own personal background and how she came to work for Mr. Frank, and the special connection that she almost instantaneously shared with Anne.

Thousands are familiar with the events that happened while the Franks were in hiding, thanks to the legacy of Anne's diary that Gies rescued when the families were finally captured and taken to concentration camps. Gies recalls what life was like in those days, when her husband played a role in the Dutch Resistance movement and they took a Jew in to hide in their own home while hiding the eight people at 263 Prinsengracht. Her story is one of almost unbelievable courage and audacity - to so boldly defy the German captors who invaded their land and to stand up against the evils that were being perpetrated against the Jews. Miep Gies believes that others would have done, and did do, the exact same thing that she did.

The story Gies has to tell expands upon the events put forth in Anne's diary. Although those in hiding knew the danger that awaited not only them but also their helpers, reading events from Miep's perspective adds another layer to the saga of the Frank family. One might wish that she expounded more upon the period after the war ended, but her focus is on Anne Frank first and foremost. So much hope was held out that Margot and Anne might make it. When news came that they didn't, it seems as if a part of Miep died, and it took her several years before she could bring herself to read Anne's diary. Even if these events are hard to speak about and hard to read, her story is a necessary addition to Anne Frank's legacy.

4 out of 5 stars A true story of courage and compassion.......2007-06-17

Millions of people around the world have been inspired and touched by the story of Anne Frank, the young Jewish girl, who spent two long years in hiding, with family and a few friends, in Amsterdam, from their Nazi persecutors, during the second World War, before they were discovered and shipped off tho their deaths in Auschwitz.

Twenty years ago Miep Gies (98 years old at the time of writing of this review) revealed her own courageous and generous role in hiding the Frank family and others, and providing them with food, companionship, and most of all hope.

She gives revealing insight into Anne's life and of her own.

Miep had been a hungry child refugee from Austria, just after the First World War, and passed her own experiences of generosity and compassion on.

We read of the Nazi ocupation of the Netherlands, the decrees and attacks against the Jews, and of the deportations and hidings.

Ultimately every man and women must ask what they would do, when a world goes mad.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Miep for sharing your story..........2007-05-09

My son had to do a report on a historical character for his 8th grade English class so we picked up this book and several others at the library. I had read the Diary of Anne Frank several times in the past - mainly for school when I was younger. I started to look through this book and couldn't put it down. It is a very simply written and a straightforward account of the story of the Frank family, how she got to know them and their years in hiding. The last section when Otto Frank returns home (he was the only survivor of the original eight) is heartbreaking. Miep was there through it all and her strength and courage are incredible.

We visited the Holocaust Museum in D.C. last summer and all those haunting pictures and displays came back to me. If you visit D.C. you should go there. We must never forget what happened to these people.

5 out of 5 stars "the other side" of life in hiding.......2005-01-20

Strangely enough, I read this book before reading Anne Frank's diary. (It is really better to read Anne Frank's diary first.) It is the story of life in the attic from the other side. Miep Gies is the woman who helped Anne and her family stay in hiding by providing them with food and other necessary items. She put herself at great personal risk to do this...Their hiding would not have been possible without outside assistance.

This is a story of courage, sacrifice and hope...the good side of human nature portrayed in an otherwise very evil time. This book should be on your shelf next to Anne Frank's diary.

                  5 out of 5 stars Would you?.......2004-04-11

I think many of us would like to think that if a family that we know well is in dire need, we would go to extreme measures to help them in any way we can. But if it came down to a life-and-death decision, I wonder how many people would have made the same decision that brave Miep Gies made to help out the Franks. She details this decision, and her years of helping the Franks hide in the little apartment behind her office, in her well-told book "Anne Frank Remembered".

Part memior, part rememberance of Anne herself, this book details the life of Miep, from a little girl born in Vienna, to her migration to Amsterdam. She becomes an office worker in Otto Frank's pectin business, and her history is now set. Soon, due to Hitler's oppresive policies against the Jews, the Franks must go into hiding to survive.

Miep recounts details of her assistance in helping keep the Franks, the Van Daans and Albert Dussel alive. In fact, this book is a brilliant piece of writing to accompany Anne Frank's diary. While Anne details life inside the Annex, we find out from Miep what she was doing outside. Together, they paint a complete picture of the horror and danger of their daily lives. And when Anne's diary stops before that faithful day, Miep's story continues. She bravely tries to bribe the Franks out of captivity to no avail.

Whereas Anne is probably the most "famous" Frank, Miep does talk about her from time to time, knowing that we would want to know her impressions of the little girl. She offers some touching, poignant insights to Anne, making her seem more real, if that's possible. Detailing Anne growing out of her clothes, which Anne domcuments herself in her diary, is a particular moment that shows us Anne having to grow up, imprisioned becuase of her religion and for her safety.

Without a doubt, Miep and all of the people who aided the Franks in the Annex are heroes. This time of history had many thousands of heroes, many of them unsung. Fortuantely, we have a well-documented life of Anne and we can spend as much time as possible with them, thanks to these books.

5 out of 5 stars Miep Gies is the lady who helped hide the Frank Family.......2004-03-21

This is a highly recommended book about Anne Frank and her diary. Miep Gies tells her whole story from start to finish what it really like hiding from the Nazis. She was a friend of the Frank family from the beginning so this is first hand knowledge and a must read for anyone who is interested or has already read the Diary of Anne Frank. It deserves 10 stars but there were only 5 available to give. *****

                                5 out of 5 stars ****A Wonderful Book****.......2003-07-27

For anyone who hasn't read any books concering the Frank family, then I suggest you do so now. This was a moving tale about what Meip went through helping hide the two families. I would give this book a 10 out of 10!!! Many parts of this book were very sad, but others brought joy to my heart. I highly suggest you read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Important book for all to read so as to never be repeated..........1999-05-12

This book was given as a gift when I was a small child and it made an impact on me even then. The impact was not fully realized until I went to the first concentration camp, Dachau and saw the situation that the prisoners lived with. It was then that I fully understood the risk that Miep took in helping the families in the attic. I believe that everyone should read one of the stories about the inhumanity that occured in this century and hopefully with the knowledge, keep it from happening again. Let us not let these peoples lives have been for nothing.

                                5 out of 5 stars I WOULD GIVE IT A 25+........1998-03-04

I consider myself very fortunate to personally have Miep's book. Although I am still reading it, I find it very interesting and very informative. Being there herself, Miep personally knew what went on in the hiding place. Knowing what would happen if caught, everybody kept their heads up in faith.
