Elsie Clews Parsons (1874-1941) was a pioneering anthropologist whose writings on the Pueblo Indians challenged American notions about racial and cultural purity. She was also a committed feminist whose unconventional marriage survived many infidelities and included an agreement to share childcare. In short, she was one of those remarkable individuals who live entirely by their own code and publicly urge society to grant everyone the same freedom they have seized for themselves. Vigorous prose and impeccable research distinguish this enthralling narrative of a thoroughly modern woman whose fierce independence seems only to have augmented her enormous charm.

      Book Description

Elsie Clews Parsons was a pioneering feminist, an eminent anthropologist, and an ardent social critic. In Elsie Clews Parsons, Desley Deacon reconstructs Parsons's efforts to overcome gender biases in both academia and society.

"Wonderfully illuminating. . . . Parsons's work resonates strikingly to current trends in anthropology."—George W. Stocking, Jr., Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute

"This is the biography of a woman so interesting and effective—a cross between Margaret Mead and Georgia O'Keeffe. . . . A nuanced portrait of this vivid woman."—Tanya Luhrmann, New York Times Book Review

"A marvelous new book about the life of Elsie Clews Parsons. . . . It's as though she is sitting on the next rock, a contemporary struggling with the same issues that confront women today: how to combine work, love and child-rearing into one life."—Abigail Trafford, Washington Post

"Parsons's splendid life and work continue to illuminate current puzzles about acculturation and diversity."—New Yorker

            Book Description

Are you trying to publish an article or monograph, revise a dissertation, create a new textbook, compile an anthology, or write a trade book? Should you sign the publishing contract you have been offered? Is it wise to publish in an electronic journal? How much can you expect to earn from your writing? What are your legal and ethical responsibilities as an author? What can you expect from your publisher? In the fourth edition of this widely recommended book, Beth Luey offers answers to these questions, as well as practical advice on negotiating a contract, preparing an electronic manuscript, seeking permission to reproduce text or artwork, choosing illustrations, and indexing. She also suggests ways to write clearly not only for one's peers but also for students and general readers. A chapter on the business side of publishing explains costs and pricing for print and electronic products. This edition brings advice to academic authors fully into the age of the Internet and the World Wide Web; both the text and the bibliography have been completely updated and a new chapter evaluates various electronic media for different kinds of publications and suggests ways for the technologically ambitious author to use them to best advantage. Beth Luey teaches and does research on the history of the book, scholarly publishing and current issues in authorship and reading at Arizona State University. She is the author (with Martha Broderson) of A Guide to Book Publisher Archives (Book Industry Study Group, 1996) and The Structure of International Publishing (Transaction Publishers, 1992).

3 out of 5 stars Handbook for Academic Authors.......2005-07-19

This is a good book, just not what I needed. (I was looking more for information on copyright rules.) But for an academic author learning the ropes, it has some solid information.

4 out of 5 stars Good advice for professors trying to publish academic books.......2004-09-05

This is a useful book, although I think that the title is somewhat misleading. The book covers a very specific topic: the many details of submitting and publishing an academic book. It does not cover writing for peer-review journals and thus will be rather unhelpful for the academics in fields where articles rather than books are the royal road to tenure.

What Luey covers, however, she covers very well. She comes to the topic with a wealth of experience -- true "insider's knowledge". She edited scholarly books and textbooks for a decade; she's taught scolarly editing and publishing; she even formed a small publishing company. All in all, as she puts it, she's been an "editor, indexer, publisher, production manager, and shipping clerk."

Luey covers the details of publishing scholarly books from start to finish, including specific types of books such as textbooks and multi-author collections of articles or essays. Financial details, such as royalties, are explained from the point of view of both author and publisher. Luey is very helpful in giving professors a sense of publishers' pressures and business considerations. She discusses how to consider which publisher is most appropriate for submitting a proposal as well as the form and mechanics of submissions. She describes contracts and tells what to look for before signing. She tells how to prepare the typescript and illustrations professionally. I thought that her explanation of why the prices of academic books varies was an interesting topic.

I am a professional counselor and coach to junior faculty and graduate students and I'm very glad to have found this book. I will definitely recommend it to the people I work with who are in the process of revising their dissertations to be published. Her explanations of how the content and style of a dissertation must be transformed in order to publish are excellent. This chapter, "Revising a Dissertation" and will be especially useful to junior academics in humanities and social science departments in which turning the dissertation into the first book is an expected prerequisite of tenure. If you are working on your first scholarly book Luey's advice will help you through the process.

5 out of 5 stars Beth Luey - Handbook for Academic Authors.......2001-08-05

Very comprehensive, especially, of course for the American market. I bought it because I wanted to have ideas about how to find a publisher after I had all but finished my book; but I wish I had seen it before I started writing, because it makes many technical points about how to prepare a typescript. It will take a fair amount of time to adjust my script to satisfy the technical requirements publishers apparently make.

5 out of 5 stars excellent resource for all academic authors.......2001-01-28

This is a well-written, entertaining look at academic publishing that is filled with valuable advice. Luey breaks down the processes involved in different kinds of academic publishing into steps that are easy to understand. What is particularly valuable is the perspective that she provides on how the publishing industry works, answering typical author questions such as "Why does it take so long to get a response?" and "Why do academic books cost so much/ make so little money?" Her practical information about how royalties work is worth the price of the book alone, as is the extremely helpful section on the difference between a dissertation and a book. Highly recommended for any academics worrying about publishing (and who isn't?).

              Book Description

The academic caveat Publish or Perish is not a new one, and for over a quarter of a century, The Thesis and the Book has come to the aid of graduate students in their quest for publication. The doctoral dissertation, usually the first book-length study completed by a scholar, is, however, only rarely publishable as a book. Understanding the differences between the two forms is a crucial part of one's education as a scholar and is equally important in appreciating the endeavours of scholarly publishers. The Thesis and the Book: A Guide for First-Time Academic Authors, revised and expanded in this second edition, will continue to provide the best overview of the process of revising a dissertation for publication.

Drawing on the expertise of the contributors, all of whom are editors, publishers, and scholars themselves, the chapters present the rudimentary differences between a thesis and a book (including matters of purpose and audience), give guidance on the necessary stylistic, technical, and structural revisions to the dissertation, and offer advice to first-time authors who must not only revise their work to satisfy prospective publishers, but also learn a good deal of the ins and outs of scholarly publishing.

The Thesis and the Book will continue to be of great value to graduating doctoral students seeking publication and to the faculty members who supervise these students. It will also be of value to acquisitions editors at scholarly presses, who must contend with the submission of revised dissertations for publication.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2000-09-07

The American Chemical Society has done an excellent job in compiling this invaluable resource for its members. It encompasses everything you could possible want to know about writing a scientific paper, posters, letters to the editor, press releases, naming and numbering of chemical compounds, conventions in chemistry, copyright, ethical issues as well as preparing an effective oral presentation. In addition, it has a clear and concise section on grammar and punctuation, a very functional index, is up-to-date including guidelines on how to cite references from Web sites, and provides a useful bibliography after each chapter. My job often involves proofreading of abstracts or journal articles in various fields of science; apart from a dictionary to check spelling, this is the resource I reach for most.

                                Book Description

The "middler years," ages ten through fifteen, have always been characterized by an urge for independence and secrecy from parents. But these days, that secrecy can lead to more danger than ever before. Tackling the frustrations and fears of parenting in a world where cyber predators make headlines every day and "normal" adolescents act out in ways that beg the question "Where were the parents?", What Are You Doing in There? presents a new way of approaching a child's private life.

In their inimitable, candid style, Charlene Giannetti and Margaret Sagarese offer a variety of strategies for staying informed without resorting to snooping, eavesdropping, or other embarrassing KGB-like tactics. Within each of a child's six privacy zones—bedroom, friends, romance, school, body, and the Internet—Giannetti and Sagarese educate parents about common cover-ups and how to establish limits that enhance a spirit of mutual respect within the household. Exploring not just whether to worry, but how to go about getting honest answers, What Are You Doing in There? charts a course designed to instill maturity that will last well beyond the middler years.

The media constantly exhort parents to find out what the kids are really up to. Now there's finally a common-sense guidebook for addressing suspicions—without doing more harm than good.

                                Book Description

Into the Sound Country is a story of rediscovery—of two North Carolinians returning to seek their roots in the state's eastern provinces. It is an affectionate, impressionistic, and personal portrait of the coastal plain by two natives of the region, writer Bland Simpson and photographer Ann Cary Simpson.

Here Bland Simpson tours his old waterfront haunts in Elizabeth City, explores scuppernong vineyards from Hertford to Southport, tramps through Pasquotank swamps and Croatan pine savannas, and visits Roanoke River oyster bars and Core Banks fishing shanties. Ann Simpson's original photographs capture both the broad vistas of the sounds and rivers and the quieter corners of mossy creeks and country churchyards. Her selection of archival illustrations ranges from the informative to the humorous, from a turpentine scraper at work in the 1850s to a pair of little girls playing with a horseshoe crab on a Beaufort porch at the turn of the century.

A memorable journey into eastern Carolina's richly varied natural world, Into the Sound Country is for anyone who would spend a while in one of America's most intriguing and underexplored areas.

4 out of 5 stars Stopping to smell the roses when you thought it was a swamp........1998-07-18

I received Bland Simpson's "Into the Sound Country" as a gift. I've had it by the bed for my night reading. It's an unlikely book for me to read -- no plot, no tight narrative, no famous folks or... well, it's different.

You walk into it rather slowly. I kept thinking of John Parker quoting White's description of Roanoke Island (site of the "Lost Colony") as "the goodliest land under the cope of heaven."

"I got no respect for a man with judgment like that," Parker said.

Simpson takes on this swamp filled, brackish, mosquito plagued, twisted tree, run-down and Godforsaken part of the world (except for the beaches) that he and his ancestors grew up in, and Suffering Cats! You can't put the book down. You want to go there. Hell, you want to LIVE there. Remarkable.

I read until I couldn't keep awake last night and then for some reason -- perhaps my wife being away baby sitting in Charlottesville -- I woke up this morning a bit! before five and finished the book. Hated for it to end. That kind of book.

Simpson teaches Creative Writing at Chapel Hill. His long ago past was at one time my present, the forties and fifties on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It's a funny book to recommend. Who the hell has time for a book that is so... leisurely. And such good company. I read passages to Jutta. Long passages. That kind of book.

Very quietly in a sort of sneaky way, you get a picture of this guy and his family. Not a bad life. Not bad at all. You'll be glad you got to know him and them. His wife takes pictures. Good ones. You'll like her too.

                                Book Description

Teenager Da Chen gathers soil from the riverbank near his village before he leaves to attend university in Beijing. Those grains bear witness to his past and contain the now silent sounds of the river. Later, spilled onto the dry earth of the North, they will merge two parts of Da's life, as does the second volume of his lyrical trilogy of memoirs.

Beginning with his first train ride to Beijing from his farm, we rumble along with him in the overcrowded and disease-ridden car to the university. Here the author faces a host of ghastly challenges, including poor living conditions, lack of food, and suicidal roommates. Undaunted by these hurdles and armed with a dogged determination to learn English and "all things Western," he must compete with every other student to win a chance to study in America -- a chance that rests in the shrewd and corrupt hands of the almighty professors. In a richly textured tale -- by turns poetic, ribald, hilarious, and heartbreaking -- Da keeps his indomitable spirit, but will he be any closer to attaining his goal?

The bestselling author of Colors of the Mountain, Da Chen gives us an engrossing, gloriously written coming-of-age saga that chronicles a remarkable journey -- a travelogue of the heart.

5 out of 5 stars I will never look at my interpreter the same way again.......2003-02-02

I loved reading this book and the descriptions of rural Chinese traditions and the hard scrabble life of the author as a student in Beijing.

I went to China in 2002 to adopt our 2nd child and we were accompanied by several interpreters from the local college. Having read this book, I now wonder what they had to do to get these positions - were they the back-stabbing types or the deserving ones? I am travelling to China again in 2003 for our 3rd child and I will now wonder again and maybe even ask them how they came about their assignments.

                                5 out of 5 stars Insite into a creative Chinese Man's life.......2003-01-27

I am an American who lived in Shanghai, China for 1/2 year in 2001/2002.
It's a magical country with so many different customs and
beliefs. I miss those sweet, smiling people. Da Chen's
Sounds of the River answered so many questions in my mind.
He is an master of words and thoughts. I'm so thankful
I found this novel because it enriched my life. Thank
                                you Da Chen.

5 out of 5 stars I will never look at my intrepreter the same way again.......2003-01-26

I loved this book, even though I felt like the ugly capitalist American while reading it.

While set in Beijing in the 1980's, it still evoked memories of when I was there in 2000. I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of the traditional marriage arrangements and ceremonies in Da Chen's home town.

We adopted our 2nd child from China in 2000 and will travel again in 2003 for our 3rd. In 2000, I was in China for 2 weeks and was always accompanied by interpreters from the local province college.

One of the adoptive families befriended one of the interpreters and worked tirelessly to get her a full scholarship to a university in the U.S. I heard that she had some difficulty obtaining a Visa to the U.S. and now I understand why.

I have recommended this book to parents who are planning to adopt Chinese children - to help them better understand the culture their children are from.

Sounds of the river is a memior of a chinese man name Da Chen, a yellow stoner. Is the book about an historical study of the cultural revolution? No, I don't think the author shares any insights to indicate this is his intent. It seems the book is written in the style of a personal journal. The language of the book is very personable, funny, and presents a fresh view of life in China. I wasn't critical of historical inaccuracies. Da Chen doesn't seem willing to protray an accurate picture and it become evident from his book why he is unwilling to share the true protrait of conditions in china.

Gifted with an unusual ability to understand English, he becomes privileged to study at the prestigious Bejing University. Da Chen works very hard and is noticed as an excellent student by his teachers. Later when Da Chen returns home to see some of the places, he wrote about in some of his college writing compositions, he realizes they seemed much better on paper than in reality. Does Da Chen write the same way in his book? I think Da Chen is very careful in his book not be critical. He makes poverty and hardship seem very bearable and brave in his book. It is very doubtful that the extreme hardship could be endured so pleasantly.

Da Chen plays the chinese flute and numerous students, friends, and teachers realize he unique talent. The chinese flute is important because, Da Chen shows through this symbol, he is unwilling to separate from his ancient hertiage and culture.

The memior reveres his parents and their values. Da Chen thinks highly of his father and mother. He talks of them with respect and admiration. Both parents introduce the concept of love as a path to marriage rather than tradition. This fustrates the match maker who wants to close a business deal for their daughter. A daughter who cuts hair but can manage twenty customers at a time has become prized by a local jeweler family, who wants the same good fortune from her skills for their family. The parents seem innovative in their ideas, but trapped in their country and culture. Change is slow but glimmers of enlightment are revealed. Both parents are extremely proud of their son and share their pride about their son with the community.

Strongly rooted in the religion of Budhism, Da Chen takes us into the mysterious world of his religion. With the chance to study in America, two students will be selected; however, many associates and teachers tell Da Chen, he has no chance because he does not come from a wealthy and prestious family and lacks the political connections. With that they tell him, he should go home an pray to budha for help. Returning home Da Chen's father takes him to the Budhist temple to receive a blessing. The priest attends many of Da Chen's fathers plays, but shocks Da Chen with how femine he appears and talks. The Chinese believe a child name brings fortune or misfortune and the same applies to Da Chen as the Budhist Priest tells him his name indicates he will travel abroad and accumulate great wealth.

Is the memior about zen? I would say in many aspects, yes. In many other aspects about faith. Da Chen is a humble and naitive student gifted and introduced to a large network of people with some of them being students and facility. In one portion of the book, a friend Bo is killed because of internal politics. Da Chen knows nothing of the reasons, only that Bo likes western ideas, was having an affair with one of the facility, and was known by the party as the son of a rebel. The memior is the story of coming of age, shocking poverty, ancient chinese marriage traditions, strange food, the hatred of foreigners, the opening of cultural exchange, brutal violations of human rights, and the awareness of the vast opportunities found in America.

Da Chen gains the opportunity to study in American. Da Chen is influenced by the American Athletes who play the Chinese national team. Did he really meet Kareem? Wow! This is a chance for Da Chen to see and experience the differences between the two cultures.

Because of his American experience receives college employment, at the age of twenty. Politically, Da Chen does not fit in with the Communist Party. As a result he becomes more obscure and distained by the dean an advocate of the party. The dean thinks Da Chen likes the taste of freedom to much. After hours, Da Chen teaches english. One of the students is the daughter of the Chinese Orchestra. A christian missionary couple cross Da Chen path and eventually introduce him to the Christian faith. Bob is a University chairman of music. Da Chen introduces the Bob to the chinese Maistro and the Maistro has the idea to perform a piece created by bob as a first in China. The musical piece is accepted with great enthusiam by the people. Later, Da Chen struggles with idealogy of many Gods and remains content to just have faith. Bob has problems understanding God so how could Da Chen grasp the reality? This was disappointing. The Sounds of the river and the colors of the mountain are replaced with the sounds of freedom.

1 out of 5 stars Exaggerations and Inaccuracies.......2002-11-03

I went to college in Beijing in the late 1980's, so I thought I could say a thing or two about Mr. Chen's depiction of college life and life in general in China at the time. Although I don't know him personally, I found many instances of exaggerations and inaccuracies that supposedly serve to romanticize inconsequential happenings in his life. This literary method is probably okay for a work of fiction, but completely inappropriate for a book billed as "A Memoir."
