Ray Hill was a cook and machine gunner who survived the sinking of a PT boat by a kamikaze. German forces in the middle of the Siegfried defensive line captured Robert Corbin, a forward artillery observer officer who later escaped after 140 days of captivity. Arthur Ensley, a B-25 pilot, was shot down on his 79th mission into the Brenner Pass. He was helped by Italian partisans. Don Barrett, a Marine, was involved in three Pacific campaigns--Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, and Peleliu, where he was badly wounded.

Fellow World War II veteran Robert G. Thobaben gathered their reports and others from men who were young soldiers in the war. This book presents 30 oral histories, 14 from the Pacific Theater and 16 from the European. In addition to describing their individual experiences, these Marine, Army, Navy and Air Forces privates, sergeants and officers also discuss such questions as why men fight, how soldiers cope, why it is important to record their stories, and what they think about the ethics of war.

If you have a chronic medical problem, and you want to prove you can go on working, get this book; if you need to get a disability retirement and you want to prove that you are entitled to it, get this book. If you just want to know that somebody understands, get this book.

One of the Best Chronic Illness Books on the Market.......2000-07-01

This is an incredibly well written book with a balance between narrative insights and valuable technical information. The author is quite candid in her personal experience with chronic illness and the resources at the end of the book are excellent and not the usual "run of the mill". I love her quote about the importance of first person narratives. "For those of us who are ill, chronic illness sets us apart. But when we read about the experiences of others, we realize we are not alone and that healing is available to all of us, regardless of our disease."

While Wells includes the usual information about good doctor/patient relationships and the importance of spirituality and alternative methods of healing, her real strength lies in her incredible ability to get the emotional heart of the various aspects of being chronically ill. I found her chapter "From Denial to Acceptance and Back Again" to be amazing in its clear articulation of the emotional stages of chronic illness and the profound isolation that can result from that experience. Everyone with a chronic illness should read and keep this book in their personal health library.

Excellent book! Well laid out and thought out plans. Now if only we could have Norm to run the band saw for us and cut out those curves for the chair.

He's got this book laid out so that each chapter is it's own project. That's a good way to do it to make sure there's enough info to do it right. However, That means that in this relatively fat (expensive) book there are only 10 projects or so. The only project I really liked was the Adirondack chair, the others were too specialized for my simple tastes.

I enjoyed reading and studying some of these projects. Each one of Norm's books have something new and interesting to learn about. My only question is when will there be a next issue? The TV projects are great and it would be nice to review the available plans and be able to order them on the net.

A great book, just like the series........1998-08-16

I bought this book at my local book store the other day. I must say it is excellent. It is mostly for non-amateurs, but they can give it a try. It says on the book, a companion to the series. I totally agree. Though you can probably make the projects from the book, it will be much easier to follow along with the specific episode. Nice illustrations. Scaled down plans are included.

If you are a fan of the New Yankee Workshop, then you have to get the book.

This book is on low quality paper with a cover that wrinkled easily. The information is good with a lot of "without mayo" and other helpful variations.

A must have book if you are health conscious and dine out.......2002-07-23

This is the most up to date Fast Food guide in publication today. It includes many hard to find restaurant listings, such as Red Lobster, as well as the more common fast food restaurants. This book includes more information than is provided by most of the restaurants own nutrition guides. We highly recommend this guide to anyone that eats fast food, even non-dieters.

This is a beautiful book where holocaust experiences are written in a simple and profound manner. It is not morbid. It is a very human story.

Anna Ornstein's Eyes.......2004-10-24

Anna Ornstein was my first psychiatry teacher in medical school, so that is my bias. When this short, powerful, articulate woman entered a lecture hall full of hypercritical American medical students like myself, what impressed me most was her courage. We were a tough audience of concrete-minded scientific reductionists, and she came with her heavily accented English and provoked us to think about feelings and the meaning of mind and emotions when we, lost and overwhelmed in a world of memorizing anatomical structures, metabolic pathways, and Nernst equations, were least ready for it.

As I learned more about the work of Prof. Ornstein and her equally impressive husband, I came to understand why she wasn't the least bit intimidated by our sophomoric arrogance (we were often merciless to lecturers).

The kindness and attentiveness of this short giant of a teacher, therapist, and theoretician, was equally as present, and most visually reflected in her strikingly bright, beautiful eyes that look like they miss nothing. (Yes, you detect the student's crush here.) What she and her husband have taught this poor student, as well as many good ones during their estimable careers, is the complexity and healing power of empathy. To have survived the holocaust and devoted a career to the study and teaching of empathy! Can there be a more powerful triumph?! Yet here is another; this wonderful little book.

This book is a gift of deeply personal remembrances. They are at the same time universal in their emotional power, because of Dr. Ornstein's ability to use words to bring her experience very near to the reader. She integrates in simple, eloquent prose the texture and emotions of the experiences. The imagery is as powerful as film, no, more so.

I cried my way through many of these memories. Though they were not my own, they were brought so close by Prof. Ornstein's words it felt as though they were. The tragedy that befell the Ornstein's and so many others, lost and surviving, uplifts and enriches as much is it hurts and warns. She has achieved her goal; those lost will not be totally lost because she has helped us to remember.

The illustrations are works of art, beautiful, powerful as well, and are a complement to the word pictures which nonetheless stand on there own.

Readers of this beautiful book will not forget these painful and beautiful pictures, seen through Anna Ornstein's eyes.
