    Book Description

Perhaps no one in history has played the role of scientist as celebrity with as much skill--and as much deception--as Wernher von Braun. America's leading rocket expert and most enthusiastic advocate of space travel, he had a closet full of secrets that would have shocked his colleagues and millions of admirers if they had been told during his lifetime. Wernher von Braun:The Man Who Sold the Moon is the first critical biography of the young German aristocrat who created Hitler's most advanced terror weapon, the V-2 rocket, and who came to the U.S. under the Army's Project Paperclip to develop missiles as a central weapon of the Cold War. The book reveals that factions of the U.S. Army, in their zeal to have von Braun's team of scientists working for American interests, covered up what they knew about his complicity in Nazi causes and abetted him in the perpetuation of the myth he carefully created about his past. Declassified Army documents and war crime transcripts, as well as the discovery of Europe of Dora concentration camp survivors' accounts, and von Braun's published writings and personal papers, have enabled biographer Dennis Piszkiewicz to document von Braun's career more fully than any previous historian. The man who tirelessly promoted space travel, worked with NASA to collaborate with Walt Disney creating television programs and the Tomorrowland section of Disneyland, and put the first astronauts on the moon, was actually a member of the Nazi party, held a rank in the SS equivalent to that of Major, and was an accomplice in the use of slave labor from the Dora concentration camp to produce his V-2 rocket. When the Third Reich collapsed, von Braun unashamedly switched his allegiance to the victor, and adroitly distanced himself from his Nazi partners. By going on to promote NASA and "sell" the American people on his dreams of space exploration, he became the man who sold the moon--a man who began his brilliant career by selling his soul to the Nazis.

4 out of 5 stars The history we never knew.......2006-04-18

My honest opinion on this book is that it is interesting. There is lots of detailed information about Wernher von Braun that sometimes I thought that they were unnecessary. But the story of his life was interesting enough that it was easy to disregard that unnecessary and sometimes excessive information. There were some missing stories about his early life in Germany, but it is understandable as many of that information were lost after the war and Wernher von Braun himself tried to avoid the subject. As I was reading this book I learned that there were more to history than just sending a man to the moon to compete against Soviet Union during Cold War. I always thought that U.S. was capable of building a rocket but only decided not to because they did not see the importance in it. I thought that the technology was available but wasn't put to use. This book showed me that I was wrong. All the people involved in developing the rocket had to put tremendous amount of time, money, and effort to build rocket capable of sending a man to the moon. The book covers a big part of the history that was never mentioned or taught in schools. The book shows us an important part of the history that all of us overlooks and take for granted. This book is worth reading just to learn how Wernher von Braun achieved his dream, but it also tells us a part of the history that has affected us all without us acknowledging or knowing it.

1 out of 5 stars Not so much a biography more a spiteful side swipe........2005-10-06

No one can deny Von Braun's achievements. He took rocketry from the simple missiles used by the military all the way through the space race years to finally achieving his dream of putting men on the moon with his Saturn V rocket. He was overall responsible for arguably humanity's greatest ever achievement, that of putting a man on the moon.

Unfortunately, Dennis Piszkiewicz seems to have made it *his* life's work to smear Von Braun because of his SS officer past. But the only crime against humanity he is able to link Von Braun to is the fact that slave labor was used by the Nazis to manufacture the V2 rockets that Von Braun designed. Cue another best selling book about the Nazis.

Unless you're vindictive and Nazi obsessed like our friend Dennis here try another book instead of this spiteful rubbish.

    1 out of 5 stars The inmigrant.......2005-09-10

A brilliant and perfect analysis of the American period in the life of this very clever, organized, tough and "protected" man. The title suits perfectly the contents.
It is a pity the author does not cover in some detail the first six months of 1.945 in the life of this person, this would have provided a more complete analysis of the biography of this German manager (more than engineer)and a better understanding of those aspects of his American biography not yet clearly explained.
In any case it is a perfect analysis of the character.
If this analysis be extrapolated to the German period of his life it would be easy to anticipate his authentic biography. A pragmatic and egocentric character. A potentially dangerous man.
    A very good book

5 out of 5 stars a drive to achieve goals at almost any price.......2005-07-28

Wernher von Braun (March 23 1912 - June 16 1977) is a two-sided problem for any writer. First, we know, he developed as a NASA-genius the Redstone rocket that placed Alan Shepard in suborbital flight in May 1961. Then he produced the great Saturn rockets that so successfully launched the U.S. manned flights to the Moon. But on the other hand over 5,000 of his V-2s were fired on Britain (V-2 for "Vergeltungswaffe 2", meaning "retaliation weapon 2"; a name invented by Josef Goebbels). These Nazi-rockets killed 2,724 people and badly injured 6,000. Moreover he was a major in the Nazi SS and one of Hitler's elite. Von Braun supervised the rocket's construction at the Nazis' Mittelwerk factory, which used slave labor from the nearby Dora concentration camp. In a letter to Mittelwerk's production manager, von Braun tells how he himself went to the notorious Buchenwald camp to arrange for the transport of more prisoners to Mittelwerk. At least 700 of them later died there. Survivors of the "hell of DORA" reported of burning corpse mountains, torture and for deterrence hanged prisoners at cranes. Dutch Sources report of 20.000 dead ones. Many slaves were murdered to eliminate any oral historical record of this new strange technology and the Nazi cruelties. Therefore von Braun also was a war criminal, and there must be a discussion of his culpability. The book of Dennis Piskiewicz tries to satisfy both sides of view. Not as satirical as the songwriter and verse-maker Tom Lehrer rhymed 1965 for a BBC television show: "'Once the rockets go up, who cares where they come down? / That's not my department', says Wernher von Braun". Maybe there are character-similarities (and friendly helping connections) between von Braun and Hitler's architect and Minister of Armaments Albert Speer. Fragment of those ingenious conqueror characters (compare with the Howard Hughes Story THE AVIATOR) often are human abysses like success greed, triumphing and all controlling volitions (Von Braun adored Nietzsche), a drive to achieve goals at almost any price, pathological jealous (remember Eisenhower's personal dislike of the German rocket team). On the other hand: 118 German rocket scientists were brought from Hitler's Third Reich together with von Braun to the USA as part of a military operation called Project Paperclip (helping sift through the Pennemuende documents). Later on von Braun became the director of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, in Huntsville. He developed the Redstone (used for the Persian Gulf War), Jupiter-C (first satellite, Explorer), Juno and Pershing missiles; he received a mandate to build the giant Saturn V launch vehicle, the superbooster that would propel Americans 1969 to the Moon: Armstrong, Aldrin, Collins. The above mentioned Tom Lehrer criticized: "What is it that will make it possible to spend twenty billion dollars of your money to put some clown on the moon?" Von Braun diabolically used his rhetorical abilities to set the US senate in fear of the Soviet Union; that blowed up the financing of his rocket-budgets and the Cold War hysteria as well. Once von Braun answered (with regard to the Nazi-system): it has been important, how the golden cow would be milked most successfully. Now, he didn't change his behaviour-patterns in the USA. Very ironically WvB commented: "There is just one thing I can promise you about the outer-space program - your tax-dollar will go further." Therefore it is not astonishing, that the last line of Piskiewicz's book is: "Sadly, because of his complicity with the Nazi cause, he also sold his soul to reach that goal." The rocket programs (in Germany and the United States as well) ate up scare resources that could have been better invested in other types of social responsibility and political care.

      Book Description

Little things can make or break a relationship. Wet towels on the bathroom floor, bread crumbs in the sheets from a late-night sandwich, a thermostat set on 75 when you prefer 68. Such incidents may seem trivial to couples in the throes of passion, but newlyweds often find that passion cools with the reality of living together. This book encourages couples to communicate with each other early on to head off disagreements after the knot is tied. From wet towels to managing the check book, hundreds of questions on such topics are inluded, such as sex, in-laws, having children, pets, cooking, food preferences, exercise and fitness, housecleaning, traveling, household economics, interior decorating, religion, and politics.

4 out of 5 stars Great for learning about someone in a new relationship!.......2006-01-30

I didn't buy this book for marriage purposes! I just met someone and he lives 1000 miles away. It gave us a good way to start learning about each other. The topics and questions cover just about everything from the basic 3 - religion, sex and politics, to the everyday stuff like, "are the pets allowed to sleep on the bed?" And while the questions are presented in a breezy and fun manner, it still gets you talking and can lead to deeper discussion. If you are to the point of actually considering marriage, I would hope you already know all this stuff about each other!

3 out of 5 stars Silly Little Book.......2005-11-26

I was hoping for something a bit deeper and with more substance. If you are just dating and stuff then this might be ok but if you are wanting to really find out if you are compatible, you have to ask a lot more really probing questions.

I found 1000 Questions for Couples to be better book for us.

4 out of 5 stars The Marital Compatibility Test:: Hundreds of Questions for Couples to Answer Together.......2005-10-01

Really opens up the conversation and understanding within a partnership.

      5 out of 5 stars A Great Conversation Starter.......2002-05-30

I had heard about this book a couple of years ago, and just recently read a friend's copy. It is a total joy...and it is great for helping couples talk about things that might not ever come up....until they're married. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed it.

3 out of 5 stars Like a Cosmo quiz, writ large.......2002-03-27

Not a bad little book ... it even asked some questions we hadn't thought to discuss. But on the whole, this book is rather shallow and only really touches on things in a superficial way. An excellent start, but if it goes well another more serious book would be a good followup.

I'm a big fan of Junior League cookbooks to begin with, so I was sure I would like this one. Little did I know that I would LOVE it. Most of the recipies are easy and inexpensive. This has become one of the most frequently used cookbooks in my collection and we have yet to be disappointed. Great gift, too. I've given it to several friends and they have all raved about how wonderful it is.

This has become my "staple" cookbook because everything I've made is not only easy & elegant in its presentation, but Yummy! I recommend it to everyone who likes to have a book with the things they love, but with a twist, and also try something new. We tried the East Texas Breakfast Cake for Christmas morning and it's now going to be our annual tradition- it was perfect to make the night before and cook in the morning. You'll love it for yourself and everyone else you give it to.

              Book Description

People are captivated by Vincent van Gogh and his art--the intense colors and passionate brush strokes that characterize his paintings and the extreme emotions that controlled his life. Combining biography, art, and travel, In the Footsteps of van Gogh focuses on the landscapes and towns that were immortalized in the paintings of this remarkable artist. In addition to Provence, the book takes us to Holland where van Gogh was born and first began his artistic career, and to Paris, where he lived for a short time. This guided tour of the artist's life, travels, and art is wonderfully revealed in the 140 color illustrations that capture the spirit and scenery of these fascinating regions immortalized by van Gogh. Captions throughout include excerpts from the famous letters to Theo, van Gogh's brother. There are also names and addresses of hotels and restaurants in Provence, Holland, and Paris for those who wish to leave their armchairs and seek out the land that inspired this great artist's work. Here is the perfect book for van Gogh enthusiasts, art lovers, and those who love the beauty of Holland and France.

After owning the book for five years I find myself more and more wanting to retrace Van Gogh's footsteps and attempt to capture my own view of the world he saw. I don't even pretend to think I could evoke the same emotions that his work does. But this book has helped give me the inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars A compassionate and objective view of Van Gogh.......1999-07-09

What a wonderful book about Van Gogh. The authors take you to the towns were Van Gogh lived and painted. The excerpts from correspondence between Vincent and Theo were a perfect touch. The book is interesting and easy to read. This is the second biography of an artist I have ever read in it's entirety, and as an avid reader of 3-4 books a week, it was great to enjoy learning about someone whose work I have been fascinated with. I was pleased with the pictures of the towns and landscapes where Vincent painted. The book does not dwell on Vincent's illness, but it does not shy away from his behavior and the effect his illness and his strong beliefs had on his life. After reading this book I have a better understanding of the artist's feelings when he painted.

4 out of 5 stars Concerns about pre-teens.......2007-09-13

I haven't read the book, but my 11 year old checked it out at school. He was hooked on the story from the beginning.
However, I was surprised when he asked me "Mom, what is a homosexual?" He said that homosexuals were singled out to be victimized. He also
was upset about how children, especially those with disabilities were tortured and murdered.
I appreciate all the positive reviews here, but it really opened up a lot of issues for my son. Might be better suited to older children.

2 out of 5 stars NO MENTION OF 3 MILLION POLISH CATHOLICS KILLED .......2007-06-28

The author makes a good effort to be objective, but drops the ball here and there. The biggest blunder seems to be in the summary of holocaust casualties. The author left out the fact that 3 Million Polish-Catholics were butchered by Hitler. This fact is often forgotten, and very hurtful, especially to the Poles who lost someone in the Polish holocaust or "Forgotten Holocaust.". A great book to read is Richard Lukas' "The Forgotten Holocaust: The Poles Under nazi Occupation."

                5 out of 5 stars Surviving Hitler.......2007-01-31

I recently read the book Surviving Hitler by Andrea Warren. I not only thought it was one of the most fascinating books I thought it was very well written. I had been to the holocaust museum in Washing DC and I was mortified looking at everything, but this book really put me in the perspective of the boy who was close to my age. The book got better and better as it went on, and I am usually not very fond of non-fiction books. This book really makes you realize how you can survive anything that comes at you as long as you believe in yourself. You are automatically hooked and as soon as the book is over you wish there was still more to read. I would definitely recommend this book to any person, young or old, it's truly unbelievable.

I was 9 when i read this book and loved it. THIS BOOK IS AWSOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                5 out of 5 stars Surviving Hitler.......2006-12-14

Imagine urinating in the same cup you eat in. Imagine feeling fleas crawling all over you and sick people coughing on you. It doesn't exactly sound pleasant but that is the lifestyle the concentration camp prisoners had to go through. The book, Surviving Hitler, is a memorable and sad memoir that focuses on The Holocaust during World War 2. The book has a moving story, and a powerful message that has truly put a different perspective in my eyes on how crule people can be and how understanding people have to be.

This book is about a boy named Jack, who is a very fortunate Jewish boy living in Europe. Jack and his family move in with his uncle who lives in a nearby town. Jack's father stayed behind to get organized and then he would meet up with them after. He had to close up his shop, sell his place, and pack up the big furniture. Unfortunately, before he could meet his family he was put into a concentration camp. Three years later Jack is working and supporting his mom and little brother while his sister, Jadiza, goes to their Aunt and Uncles house to help them with aetheir new baby. Hitler's soldiers invade the town they are living in and later group all the Jewish families into the town square to send them to concentration camps. Jack gets separated from his family and starts a whole different life in the concentration camps. He learns to survive on his own and take what he can get. It is a very rough experience for him, and you have to read the book to see the outcome.

I really enjoyed how the author put black and white photographs in this sad but true story because it really helps you imaging the living conditions back then. The structure of the book is not terribly long, making it an easy read. What I truly love about this book is that the author is always keeping you on your toes and never drags on about one topic. This book sends out a powerful message that I never truly understood until I finished he novel. It taught me to never take anything for granted and to enjoy every moment possible. Of course I forget this message a lot and I do take a lot for granted but when in doubt I always try to remember this book. Jack also gets a message out of his experience in the concentration camps. He learns to live life to its fullest and try to help as many people as he can but still be cautious of his own well being. "Three years as a teenager in the death camps he survived through courage, luck, help from others, and sheer will. Like all survivors, he has much to teach us about bravery and self reliance, and about history and the lessons of the Holocaust." Surviving Hitler is a very moving book that can really make people change some of their views of the world.

In my opinion Surviving Hitler is one of the best books I've ever read. Not only has it intrigued me to know more about the Holocaust, it has actually interested me a little more in history in general. I would defiantly recommend this book and hope that the next person who reads it loves it as much as I have.
