Well-researched biography of a pioneer electrical engineer.......2000-10-20

Fleeming Jenkin was one of the early British electrical engineers, instrumental in the successful laying of many submarine telegraph cables. His career began in 1857 at Newall and Co., during the period in which the company was making the first Atlantic Cable. He was subsequently in partnership with William Thomson (later Lord Kelvin) and C.F. Varley, developing many of the theories of submarine cable working, and supplying instruments and consulting services to most of the cable-laying companies.

Jenkin received 37 patents between 1860 and 1886; and continued his electrical engineering work while a professor at Edinburgh University. He published papers in many other fields including civil engineering, economics, speech research, and the theatre. He was a close friend of Robert Louis Stevenson, who wrote Jenkin's first biography in 1887, shortly after Jenkin's death; this was more of a personal memoir and did not do justice to Jenkin's many technical achievements.

Cookson and Hempstead's biography of Jenkin is an excellent view of his life in all its aspects. Extensively researched from many primary sources, it gives details of the work of the electrical engineering pioneers of the Victorian era and provides a clear picture of the birth of a major industry.

A rare focus on the social and economic context.......2002-10-23

This is the only book-length exploration of the social and economic context of the the HIV/AIDS epidemics. What comes through is that the authors are not journalists who dashed off a book on AIDS, but longtime researchers, with world-ranging experience.

WHile well documented, it is readable. The next college level course I teach on contemporary issues will surely include this as required reading. My students will thank me for it.

The best comprehensive treatment of HIV/AIDS.......2002-09-06

Tony Barnett and Alan Whieside have done a fantastic job of placing the issue of HIV/AIDS within a comprehensive context. It is easy to read, well researched, thoughtful in it's analysis, and comprehensive - that is, it places the pandemic amidst the global forces that are affecting it and which must be understood if we're to successfully turn the tide. I am recommending it to many of my colleagues! It is the best book I have read to-date on the most challenging crisis facing the human family.

This book is full of excellent ideas on how to utilize often overlooked resources in a community that can help save big on grocery bills. By using this book in conjunction with my small garden, I pared my monthly bill down by over one hundred dollars. It contains very simple, very inexpensive recipes, many of which consist mainly of garden produce. Great for any gardener who would like ideas on how to more efficiently use their harvest! I was also surprised at the tastiness of the recipes. My kids love them!

Plain Speaking.......2005-09-07

The words of Ed Fowler are a welcome change from the ususal gobbledegook that is heard today. I would enjoy reading Ed's observations even if I weren't a knife collector. Part two of Mr. Fowlers life quest is a continuation of the first edition and there's nothing wrong with that. It's refreshing to have a craftsman divulge the discoveries that has resulted in what I think is the perfect working knife.

For Knifemakers Only.......2004-02-10

If you are a knifemaker, then you may appreciate this book. If you're a fan of Ed Fowler, you may appreciate this compilation of previous articles for a magazine. As a person interested in knives, I was more interested in learning about different materials, hardness scales, knife functions, styles of knives, and the like. This book does not address those issues. I don't care to learn how to skin a rattlesnake, buy dying sheep for their horns, and I'm not interested in Ed Fowler's dating and subsequent marriage. I didn't expect to get story (with no instructions) about knife sharpening. All in all, the book was very disappointing.

An Knifemaker Icon.......2002-10-18

Mr Fowler would cringe at that description, I'm sure. A down to earth man and great wit. Fowler is very much admired by knife users and makers alike. This IS a very entertaining book. Just be aware that knifemaking demands a lot of time, often alot of equipment, and inate skill on the maker's part. This book won't make you a knifemaker. It may inspire you to want to be one though. Compared to the other books in this price range and size, it has alot of information and fairly good illustrations. It does show you that a man's personality is very important to the quality of his craft.

The comprehensive guide.......2001-02-03

Ed has compiled a compendium of useful info in this small book, containing charts and guides to anecdotes from his life reguarding knives. Ed Fowler's Knife Talk : The Art & Science of Knifemaking is a must for anyone even considering working steel to become a bladesmith.

Ed Fowler has a deep passion for all things knife. A fantastic collection of short stories and articles from someone who has been there and done it. He makes you feel that you are there in his forge and before you know it you have learned something new. A little how-to, a little history, and a lot of Ed's philosophy of life. As comfortable as your favorite boots.

Outstanding horticultural reference.......2005-09-20

This book features hundreds of color photos of plants and black & white botanical drawings of leaves and fruit and contains information on the use and culture of hundreds of varieties for temperate and subtropical city and suburban landscaping.

R. Gordon Halfacre, Professor at Clemson University, is a graduate of Clemson College and received a Ph.D. in Horticulture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and a M.L.A. in Landscape Architecture from North Carolina State University. He received VPI's Sigma Xi Research Award in 1968 and was named N.C. State's Outstanding Teacher in 1970. His previous books include Fundamentals of Horticulture, Keep 'Em Growing, Horticulture and Carolina Landscape Plants. Horticulture received the Helen S. Hull award for Literary Horticulture achievement in America presented by the Garden Clubs of America.

Anne Rogers Shawcroft, a landscape designer who lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, studied horticulture and botany at North Carolina State University and received a B.A. in Art Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She was the author of Carolina Landscape Plants.

The Reichmanns

The book, "The Reichmanns; Family, Faith, Fortune and The Empire of Olympia & York" by Anthony Bianco is a 668 page mind boggling tale of a family dynasty that came from nowhere and rose to one of the most wealthy families in the world in one generation. The book explains how through Paul Reichmann's insatiable drive and willingness to parlay the profit from each successful project into a much larger endeavor, their wealth exploded to over $10 billion at the peak, just before risking everything on Canary Warf on London's East End.

At times it's a bit of a fight to get through the sections that are not related to business and real estate, but those sections give you a good idea about the family's morals and values and bring you closer to understanding their thinking.

A memorable section is when they braved the NYC real estate slump of 1976 - 1997 and purchased eight skyscrapers from the Uris Building Corporation for $46 million down. Within a decade the package would have a value of over $3 billion.

The book is packed with similar anecdotes that both inspire and encourage someone wanting to build a real estate fortune of their own.

Details of a lost culture and a lost business empire.......2001-06-24

The book discusses in great detail the Reichmann family's role both in Jewish culture over the last couple hundred years and in the real estate developement business over the last 40 or so years.

The part I liked the best was the descriptions of 18th and 19th century Jewish life in the "oberland"(sp?) of Hungary. A lost culture, thanks not only to the Nazis but also to Jewish Emancipation.

In a way, it is inspirational, as it shows how one family managed to integrate a healthy, traditional religious expression with philanthropy and business acumen. It also shows that you cannot understand what makes that family "tick" without understanding the rich culture and religion of orthodox jewishness.

The greatest strength of this book, in my opinion, is that it is a _history_ of the family and its business, religious, philanthropic, and cultural dealings. It isnt the hagiography that so many business biographies in the popular press tend to be.

Paul at the helm.......2000-06-09

As the Reichmanns anticipate another rush to the top of the heap we shall watch with amazed eyes as this family woos our imagination, yet again! As renowned as the Reichmanns have been there are still followers of scrappy success stories that do not know much about what this family, with brother and son Paul at the helm, contributed to New York City's skyline. The World Financial Center was a creation of their delicately named Olympia & York. Read this from beginning to end so that you can grasp the rise and fall and now, again, rise of this amazing family. As is usually indicative of most business minds through time, the children are not as capable as the original "originators" themselves.

Better than a soap opera.......2000-05-03

For those interested in real estate development, I recommend skipping through the first half of the book and starting at page 256. From there on it is fascinating reading on the possibilities of development for those with seemingly infinite capital on hand. Paul Reichmann's passion, drive and high tolerance for risk makes for better reading than most novels.

Inacurate and Unfair!.......1999-07-11

Though well researched and well written, the author accepts rumour as facts, and thus published reports of personal misconduct which are totally false. It does not do justice to the tragic story of the collapse of the fortunes of a family that was world reknowed for their kindness and generosity. For those that were acquainted with the true facts, and recognize the Reichmans as the great men that they truly are, this book is a travesty.
