Stanley A. Hardin, born October 19, 1916, was living in Pajarito, New Mexico when he joined the Army Air Corps. He was sent with the Thirty-Fifth Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron to Kunming Air Base in China. Hardin was returning to his base at Nanning when he was forced down. Miraculously, Lt. Hardin landed his P-38 safely. Soldiers approached the plane. It was a relief to see the white sixteen-point star on their caps instead of the red rising sun of the Imperial Japanese Army. Aided by the courageous Chinese people, Hardin was able to return to his base after about a month as their honored guest. Hardin flew fifty combat missions in the China-Burma-Indian theatre. Of the seventeen pilots in the Squadron, only nine returned home. Upon returning home to his wife Betty and daughter Tana, Hardin joined the Air Corps Reserve and was a Lieutenant colonel at the time of his death. Hardin attended the Palmer Chiropractic School in Davenport, Iowa and had a successful career as a Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine. Then there were two more daughters, Janie and Twila. Stanley A. Hardin, Lt. Colonel U.S.A.F. Ret., died in Portales, New Mexico in April of 1982. 2003, 5½ x 8½, paper, 158 pp.

where's the beef.......2001-10-09

I've been running for 35 years and coaching for many so I expected to pick up a book that would give some insight into a young runner's mind or some biomechanical needs of a young runner. The book is a cursory view of coaching and training. It's fine if you are just starting out with no background. But where's the meat and potatoes?

Very helpful and informative, a good reference manual........1998-09-24

I am a Cross Country Coach for Lakeshore Middle School in Stevensville, MI and am building a program. I found the "Training for Young Distance Runners" book to be very helpful. I have found the section on Psychology right on target. I have a son that runs High School Cross Country who runs year around and after a successful summer road racing season started the Cross Country Season doing very poorly. Using the Psychology section helped me get him back on track. The Nutrition section has also been helpful for some of my runners. I give the book a two thumbs up.

I liked how this booked emphasized how important mental training should be integrated into a good, solid training prog. The scientific aspect is easy to understand though not nearly as thorough or complex as Martin and Coe's book. The training is very conservative, but the strength training advice was very helpful.

This book makes traditional recipes seem so simple. It gradually builds your confidence to attempt such recipes as hoppers, pittu and string hoppers. I would recommend it as the first and last book. You are able to invent your own recipes once you get the flavour and smell which this books teaches you to acquire so wonderfully!

This book is a must have cookbook for those craving for traditional Sri Lankan food. For someone like myself who was intimidated by traditional cooking, this book has made it simple. It has numerous Sinhala and Tamil recipes that are well described in step-by-step process. This book contains sample menus (wonderful idea), explanations on spices, utensils and measurements, which are of great help for a novice.

Traditional thosai, pittu, idly, yellow rice, dhal curry (parippu), cabbage mallum, kale mallum, crunchy carrot salad, spicy chicken curry and vara (fish), are all included in my meal rotation (delicious recipes). There are many more recipes to try out...and I am getting there!!!!. :)

Read the recipe till the end before beginning to cook. There are hints and alternatives that may save you time.

A lot of recipes for the price. I have already tried out two of the dishes (yellow rice and capsicum badun) and they came out excellent!! - had a lot of praise from friends who enjoyed it. There is a wide selection of rice dishes, curries, appetizers and desserts. Also recipes for a lot of "village" dishes for which the ingredients can be bought at an Asian Store. Excellent book for Srilankan cooking that is easy for even the amatuer cook.

Suharshini Sene Viratne's Exotic Tastes Of Sri Lanka presents exotic dishes ranging from Traditional Hoppers (coconut-infused crepes) to Ash Plaintain Curry and Mango Fantasy. It doesn't hold much in the way of pictures, but the easy recipes don't need much embellishment and the coverages are welcomed rarities in a cookbook genre which holds surprisingly little in either area.

More and more people are becoming interested in succulents due to their largely drought tolerant natures and their definite fire prevention advantages. If you are new to succulents and had only one book to choose this should be it. Even if you know quite a bit about succulents this book could still be of value. It's that good.
What the beautiful cover seems to allude to, the book itself totally delivers. The amount of information provided in such a small book is gratifying. It's only 224 pages, but you are unlikey to find this many varieties of succulents pictured in such exquisite detail even in books twice this size. And there aren't simply specimen pictures. Throughout the book there are pictures of the plants arranged in garden settings to give the gardener an idea of how these plants can be combined to create a truly magical garden.
But don't think that DCGWS is just pictures. The written information it provides is every bit as satisfying as the pictures. It is such a complete book on the subject of succulents with respect to their background, the techniques you need to know to handle them safely, their design potential in the garden, and their use in special conditions that unless you want to become an expert on the subject you may never need to buy another book on succulents once you own it.

Plant growth habit and culture notes are all too rare in succulent and cacti volumes. This expertly assembled book captures the succulent plants at their optimum phase and accurately records botanical names and growth requirements. I also utilize to accurately identify plants that I use to create living succulent wreaths. The section of 'Bringing the Desert Indoors' is a welcome invitation to indoor gardeners every where to enjoy these sculptural beauties year around.

Best book in my library........1998-04-05

One of few books dealing with gardening in the dry southwestern climates. Most of the book is devoted to "Plant Selector" which describes the plants, hardiness, cultivation needs, etc. Other sections deal with "Garden Design", "Techniques" (cultivation etc.), and, " Special Conditions." If you have one book on succulent gardening, this should be it.

A masterpiece.......2001-12-25

After 1044 pages, 813 black and white photographs, 194 color photographs, 165 line drawings, and 135 distribution maps, cacti lovers will have no problems finding their favorite cacti in the wild or getting background on their systematics. This is a wonderful book, and one can never tire of perusing its contents. It is rich with information and an excellent introduction for those readers first entering the exotic world of cacti. Some of the most interesting parts of the book include: 1. The use of the scanning electron microscope to study surface patterns of cacti. Students of botany will realize that correlating the fine structure of cacti with taxonomy would be an interesting research project. 2. The root system of the Opuntia echinocarpa cholla. 3. The metabolism of cacti: the Craseulacean acid metabolism which allows closing of the stomata during the day. 4. The chemical chracters of cacti, particularly the use of two-dimensional chromatograms. 5. The evolutionary relationships within the family of cacti. 6. The role of asexual reproduction in promoting the survival of hybrids in chollas and prickly pears.
The book will no doubt serve as an excellent reference book in many years to come.

35-Yr Reunion - Success...............2005-10-09

I bought the book used with the software -- I had a terrible time attempting to load the software -- it happened to be an older version and never would load.... so I bought a new book with software through Amazon.com and that version worked wonderfully..... I loaded 770+ names and addresses into the database software and the software printed my mailing labels. The book was great and gave me the information I needed - it couldn't force my fellow classmates to attend the reunion though! The one thing I would stress to anyone planning a reunion is to get a source of money up front -- a slush fund from the previous reunion or a Class officer willing to help with postage and reservation money to secure your facility banquet room..... that was the worst hump for me. We did have a successful reunion though -- with only 56 of the 770+ former students --- Besides the book I also used the website Classmates.com --- I was the reunion contact and that enabled me to send 'alerts' to all classmates and involved me creating only one E-Mail message and then sent it out to all the classmates in my class...... that was a great help along with the book!!!

Older but adequate version of book.......2005-09-19

The Reunion Planner has a lot of good ideas for many kinds of reunions. This version of the book is not the current version. The software included with the book would not work with Windows Xp. I called the publisher. The customer service manager offered to send the latest disk free of charge. They hope that we will buy additional products from them in the coming months. When I received the updated disk the next day, the software worked splendidly. Since I bought a used book, this glitch is not surprising and acceptable. I would have paid considerably more for a new book.

A starting point.......2004-06-27

If you are planning your first reunion this book is a good starting point. However, you shouldn't rely on it completely. While it has some good ideas and gets you thinking about the beauty of strong families it's not very strong on details. For solid information about dealing with hotels, DJs, photographers and the bank I had to buy other books. Again, this is a fine book to get you started but you'll need more than this to actually pull off a medium to large family reunion.

To begin with, in memory of my grandmother, I was searching for a book that could assist me with planning a family reunion from top to bottom. This book does this and more. Beasley begins by discussing planning committees and gradally moves on to very important issues such as money matters, record keeping, and preservation concerns.

The Mystery of the Word Made Flesh -- a fitting title.......2006-09-02

Since Christmas of 1995 my wife and I have used these fabulously interesting readings from GLIMPSES Of GRACE to buffet us from the storms of everyday life! As one quite perceptive reviewer speaks of her as a Mystic and Yes, she asks good questions. Her readings relate to the living of all life in the face of Belief and Doubt.

One reading from May 20th she is doing an afterschool seminar for high school students and is asked by a brilliant young lady from Harlem, earlier from Panama: "Mrs Franklin, do you really truly believe in God with no doubts at all?"

"Oh, Una, I really and truly believe in God with all kinds of doubts... But I base my life on this belief." Another topic that often arises in her readings is that of Death and Eternity. After one student is saying that it seems lately "there's death everywhere..." Another answers, "Is the price too high? Are you afraid?" These lead to the titles of "We Die Many Deaths and A Metaphor for the Afterlife." Her simple yet clear approach seems to come down from the power found in Creation... that Life is a Gift and where there's Life there's Hope!

Best Selections from Madeleine's Works.......2006-03-20

Madeleine L'Engle has written many wonderful books for both adults and children. Her work is very provocative and most thoughtful. You glean something more every time they are read... GLIMPSES OF GRACE takes the best passages from her books and reveals more contemplative insights. This Daily Thoughts and Reflections is cross-referenced by topic and title. GLIMPSES OF GRACE can be appreciated by Madeleine's fans as well as someone who is not familiar with her work. I keep an extra copy on hand as I have often given this book as a gift. Highly recommended!

Life Revealing.......2001-12-30

I read the Crosswick Journal series before being buying this treasure as a Christmas gift to myself a few years ago. I was already a fan of Ms L'Engle. However, this book brought her into a new realm. I followed the readings quite faithfully during two yearly cycles. I must say that they provided my those glimpses of grace that were needed during that very difficult time of my life. These are only glimpses because they are relatively short and easy to digest over breakfast. However, as so often happens, glimpses open doors that reveal so much more. My faith in the God of Creation was reaffirmed through this book. This God accepted me as I was (and am) and affirmed me as good. What more can one ask from a book of daily reflections?

Glimpses? Oh, so much more!.......2001-05-11

L'Engle does something here that few devotional authors dare. She not only supplies answers and inspirations, she poses questions. Questions without easy answers. Questions that penetrate to the heart of true faith in God.

Does she qualify as a mystic? Yes, in that she moves outside the world of pure rationalism.

Is she a Christian? Yes, in the sense that she believes upon Jesus Christ as the savior and as the only begotten Son of God.

Is she an agnostic? Yes, by her own definition. She says that by confessing agnosticism, she is only confessing that she doesn't know everything. She refuses to lie or pretend otherwise. Yet, in the midst of not knowing, she still believes in the God that created the universe.

This devotional breathes life into a sometimes stale genre. L'Engle's openness might challenge, even offend, some. But for those on the limits of faith, those hanging in amidst life's tragedies and unexpected miracles, "Glimpses of Grace" gives a little more grace to move on. This is classic and poignant writing. One closes the pages filled with a greater awe and greater mystery regarding the love of God.

This is a beautiful devotional, and a glimpse of the way a brilliant mind works at something we all aspire to: understanding God. It is refreshing to read something that doesn't pretend to have all the answers about Him, but encourages us to "learn to love the mysteries". I don't know about you, but that is what I am trying to do. Instead of simplifying who God is and reducing him to the level of an idol, the author encourages us to see him as Omnipotent God, Creator & Sustainer. It is a breath of fresh air to me, and a wonderful encouragement.

I have read this book over and over again and am still hit with the amazing impact! The words that Chris Fabry has to say are touching and have had an impact on my walk with Christ. His humorous topics are easy to relate to and will touch the depths of your heart and soul. At the Corner of Mundane and Grace is the best book gift I can think of. You will find yourself reading and recommending it to all your friends and family.

Fabry is a funny guy, and the book IS funny, but it's also deep. He is a teacher and as a reader I do learn important lessons, but school was never as much fun as this! Weaving stories about his own family into the book, Fabry reminds me to focus on what is important-friends, family and most of all faith. Don't miss this book.

Heartwarming, insightful stories..........2000-05-08

of seeing God in everyday life! I wish that title section was longer!

Anyway, I've kept coming back to this title on Amazon and I'm very surprised no one has written a review for this book yet! I read it back in October and was waiting for someone else to write that first review. But they haven't and it's time for all you Amazon browsers to know about this wonderful book!

Chris Fabry and his wife Andrea have a large family in the suburbs of Chicago. Chris used to be the co-host of "Mornings with Greg and Chris" on WMBI in Chicago (great Christian radio station - both teaching and music). Even though he hasn't been on the air for close to a year now, I still miss him and was thrilled to hear that he would be writing more books!

This book is the kind of book that you can pick up and read a chapter and put it down for a day, a week or a month, and pick it back up and you won't have lost anything because these short vignettes are complete unto themselves.

Having said that, however, I believe I read the book in 2 sittings! Chris's style in his book is warm and friendly - his way of telling about his wife and children (and other family members) really makes you feel like you know them.

But this book is not just a book of warm fuzzy stories. Chris has shared some of his experiences of seeing God in the everyday, mundane situations of life we all have. Just be reading the book, you will be better able to see the hand of the Lord of the universe in *your* life!

Some of the stories really hit me hard. Chris writes very honestly about his own feelings and makes himself vulnerable, which is a very very brave thing to do. I must add that when Chris was on WMBI and his wife Andrea was hosting the best Christian syndicated call-in show in the country, they actually were on MidDay Connection together talking about their marriage, including a real close hard look at some difficult times in their marriage. I really admired them for that.

Back to the book... Most of the stories had my laughing and crying within the same 2-minute period. Not everyone can write like that! Parents especially will enjoy this book. My own children are older now, and this book reminded me of some of the similar times we had when they were little.

I was just looking through the book again trying to pick out highlights. It's really hard - the whole book is great, but here's the topics of a few: Chris taking his daughter on her first date, a trip to the pediatrician (boy, could I identify with that one - we wanted them to install a drive-through window whereby you could stick the child's head out the window and the doctor could check ears and throats, at the next window you'd pay and get your prescription for the inevitable amoxicillin that Chris talks about in his book).

Another wonderful story was one of the first ones in which Chris and Andrea were going for a walk and Chris was... er... hmmm... not really paying attention. And there's a classic where daughter Kristin (who used to say "Jofuss" instead of Joseph when telling the Christmas story from Luke 2) got "God bless you" in her Rice Krispies and that raised the question - what do *we* do when something comes and messes up our day, our week, our life?

And one of the most touching stories is called "I Didn't Even Know Her Name" which was about an apparently homeless woman who hung around the office building where the radio station had their offices. The story talks about how we tend to hang around with people like us. We tend to avoid people who are different, whether their clothes tattered, or they're smelly, or their conversation is somewhat fragmented. Didn't Jesus come to minister to those people too? Chris is very honest about his feelings in this story and they changed at the end. Really makes you think.

Thanks Chris, for letting us into your life and your home, and your thoughts. When is the next book coming out?

As for people reading this review, order several copies! It would make a great gift to have on hand!

This aim of this impressive work for the general reader is to explain and illuminate the geography and history of the Holy Land and the Middle East. Joseph L Gardner is listed as editor, Richard L Berenson as art editor and Zahava Feldman as copy editor. The engaging text is enhanced by beautiful illustrations, plenty of photographs and of course, many maps of Israel, the Middle East and the Mediterranean Area.

The introduction provides a set of special features that serves as an illustrated guide, including chapters on the people, animals and plants of the Bible, weights, measures & currencies, and the history of the Bible. The chapter titled The Holy Land In Maps contains ancient maps and illustrations, Digging Up The Past has photographs of excavations, Land Of The Bible provides topographical maps whilst Views Of The Holy Land contains breathtaking photographs of the land. The intro concludes with 2 double-page spread maps of the land from north to south: Biblical Sites In the Holy Land.

The main body of the book, titled Historical Atlas Of Biblical Times, opens with NASA satellite photographs and then follows the historical narrative with a wealth of maps, photographs and illustrations.

Smith, Sir George Adam, Scottish biblical scholar and Hebraist, b. Calcutta, India.

He was professor of the Hebrew language of the Bible, literature, and theology in the United Free Church College of Glasgow from 1892 to 1909 and thereafter, until 1935, principal and vice chancellor of the Univ. of Aberdeen.

He frequently traveled and lectured in the United States.

Smith was knighted in 1916. He is especially noted for his Historical Geography of the Holy Land (2d ed. 1894, repr. 1966 of 1932 ed.).

was born in Calcutta, where his father, George Smith, C.I.E., was then principal of the Doveton College.

He was educated at Edinburgh in the Royal High School, the University and New College.

After studying at Tübingen and Leipzig and travelling in Egypt and Syria, he entered the ministry of the Free Church of Scotland and was appointed professor of Bible subjects in the Free Church College at Glasgow 1892.

In 1909 he was appointed principal of the University of Aberdeen and was knighted in 1916.

A disappointment.......2005-08-11

This CD-ROM is not much of a bargain. It consists simply of several Adobe Acrobat files, which are scans of two books published in the early 1900's, as well as a Bible atlas from the same period. The maps are terribly hard to read because the scans are not very clear.
I returned this product for a refund.
