Book Description
No Ordinary Mike examines how the son of a poor English market gardener took advantage of school reforms to learn the skills necessary for a career in science. The biography notes his unforeseen arrival in Vancouver and the circumstances that led him to make the city his life-long home. As a professor at the University of British Coumbia, Smith dedicated his considerable talent and energy to research in biochemistry and molecular biology, and later launched the University's internationally regarded Biotechnology Laboratory. After his 1993 Nobel Prize, Smith became a powerful advocate of science who influenced national policy and helped to establish Canada's pre-eminent Genome Sciences Centre. Damer and Astell present not only the career and science of a great Canadian scientist, but also the politics and personalities of university life.

Poor Eaters Helping children who refuse to eat.......2006-05-16
This book has helped my 15 month old who has not eaten any food with the help of a SLP, G.I specialist and O.T. The book gives clear directions and started my child eating some solids for the first time.
If you child is g-tubed for feeding then this book is for you.......2005-11-30
If you child is not eating by mouth but by tube installed in his(her) body usually tummy then this book is just right for you. I have a 4 yr old food refuser and bought this book , first to make her eat , second to widen her food choice. Author used so difficult language mostly related to feeding tubed children.
Not worth to buy , if you child has no physical problems.
Didn't work for us.......2005-10-18
My daughter is very limited in what she likes and she eats very small amounts. She's never refused to eat so I wondered if it would be the right book for us. I was looking for strategies to increase her diet variety besides the usual "try it over and over because it takes 15 tries". I have been down that road and I end up frustrated, and dd ends up still eating only cheerios and yoghurt. The book was a little difficult to follow, and as I suspected was not for our situation. I think if you have an extreme feeding situation with your baby or child, this may work for you. For less drastic situations, I liked Ellyn Satter's "How to get your child to eat..but not too much".
Wealth of Information.......2005-08-06
I have been searching for so long for a book like this one. I have received the best and most useful information from this book than any of the other books I have tried. I recommend this book for anyone who is having eating issues with their children. A must have!
Poor Eaters. Helping children who refuse to eat.......2003-12-02
Very, very helpful. I've been having problems with my son's eating for 3,5 years and was thinking abour seeing a children's psychologist, but decided to give this book a try. I am glad I did because now my son eats peaches, eggs, meat, vegetables - and used to he would eat only pasta and rice. Dr.Macht has done a great job studying children with eating problems and finding the way to help them. This book not only helped my 4-year old, but it made me feel better because now eating is not a battle, it is time which the whole family enjoys.

Fancy Drinks, but not very practical.......2005-01-10
Do yourself a favor and pass buy this book if you are a professional bartender. I wasted my money on this book in hopes of serving up some new and different drinks. Most drinks were not practical to make because they contain unusual and expensive ingredients. I feel it's more of a special occasion book and it ends up collecting more dust then actual use.
ok, so it's not the classics.......2004-02-10
I mean, there are the classics in here, like cosmos. But most of these are party drinks--you know, the cool drinks you wish you knew some bartender could whip up for you. The punches are the best. The best! In fact, this is my second copy, because my first got so water-logged after too many parties. What a fun book. It's not that stuffy "what a cocktail is supposed to be" book. I mean, that's great--but this is for parties, like the ones that need big pitchers of drinks, whether with alcohol or now.
Interesting book, but look out for bloopers........2004-01-28
Mr. Weinstein suggests serving a "Port in a Storm" (p. 174), a hot drink, on Father's Day. A hot drink in June? mmm... He also suggests serving the "Lemon Cheesecake Thick Shake" at a baby shower. With all due respect, Mr. Weinstein, ladies' parties generally feature chicken salad, diet soda, salad, and salad, and maybe a dessert. Most women wouldn't be caught dead drinking a milkshake in front of another woman. Although the drink suggestion for each type of party is a nice idea, I would find the drinks cumbersome to make, since most of the recipes serve one or two people. For a group, a punchbowl or pitcher recipe would work better.
I appreciate the G-rated drink names--Mr. Weinstein doesn't try to be cute like other cocktail book writers. I also appreciate his grouping of drinks, such as the grouping of hot drinks--coffee, hot chocolate, tea, juice. The cover photos are beautiful--I wish that there were more photos throughout the book.
Fun & Tasty Drinks - Worth Every Penny.......2003-01-05
This book has hundreds of killer drinks that will make just about any party a smash hit. There are rum drinks galore and even non-alchoholic drinks for the designated drivers in your crowd. The drinks come in a rainbow of colors, and if you don't have a set of tiki glasses to serve them in, that's okay - you can always get some on ebay!
What fun drinks!!!.......2001-11-09
Wow, these are great. I'll never throw a boring party again. I've made the Pink Elephant Punch and the Dim Sum Sling 3 times and my friends love them. Some of my friends don't "drink," so I made them a few of the smoothies and ice cream drinks from this book and they had just as much fun as the rest of us. I've just ordered the other books in the series and can't wait to get them.

Recognizing his two nationalities.......2004-05-11
This is an excellent book. It explains a man of two nationalities, proudly recoginizing his Indian heritage. How can people say that he was an Englishman?? He focused on the wild-life because most people take the wild-life for granted. From his mother's side, he had the Scottish blood; his father's side a more dominant, showed up in his personality and his physical appearance. He was involved with Great Britian, he did most of the things an English lad would do, as far as I am concerned, he did not wrong to anyone, only to himself by the consumption of alcohol; which is known today as "A white man's disease" He was "brave enought to tell the truth" I recommend this book as the best.
A frontiers man with foresight.......2002-01-18
Fantastic book.. wonderful stories told from a very perseptive individuals point of view. A man who loved to live life far from the modern day lifestyle of his day and enjoy the harshness and or the beauty that mother nature had to give. It definetly shows the stark reality of living a lifestyle in the Canadian wilderness. Yet he also conveys the beauty and peacefulness of living with nature and the animals.
As close to Thoreau as it gets - in some ways better.......2001-02-18
If it weren't for his fantastic writing ability, Grey Owl would have gone down in history as a liar and a fraud (after his death, the world discovered that the "Indian" known as Grey Owl was actually an Englishman born Archibald "Archie" Belaney). However, his books - true works of art - made a statement in the early 1900's that have stood the test of time. Anyone who appreciates a walk in the woods or quiet mountain stream will understand Grey Owl's passionate plea for conservation. "Tales of An Empty Cabin" has always been my favorite, but all of his works were masterpieces.
An experience in love and appreciation of life........1999-07-27
Would it not be interesting for each of us to express our point of view regarding all those experiences that brought us to a certain point in our lives. Tales of an Empty Cabin does just that. The cabin is actually a make shift structure somewhere in the northern reaches of Quebec, at a placed called Birch Lake (1928). This is where a man's life, like Saul of Tarsus, was transformed from trapper, guide, and forest ranger, to one of Canada's leading "environmentalists' and respector of animal life. Grey Owl, in contradistinction to most, was a real individualist, who took upon himself the task of challenging the 'status quo' in his day. Each chapter is a short story describing "life" in certain situations, conditions, and circumstances. It is a marvelous attempt at the sharing of one's perception of things. Grey Owl was a gifted observer and prolific writter. He was like an Olympic Athlete in that he worked, indefatigably, towards a goal; namely, depicting with great insight, a variety of activities so prevalent during his days in the north of Canada. He perfected his writting skills so well, that millions around the world recognized his abilities and talent. In fact, one of the stories (XIII), The Tree, was so popular it was published as a separate book. In his Epilogue he ends with this moving statement, "And the cabin won't be empty any more, nor the grove again so silent and deserted, while yet remains a solitary reader whose sympathy and kindly understanding brings Life to that memory-haunted valley in the hills, and awakens those others, who have dreamed and waited there so long." Grey Owl was a man who did his best to share his heart. This is a noble cause.
Buy it for the descriptions of beaver life; skip the rest........1999-03-04
The author emigrated from England to Canada early in the 20th century and adopted a Native American persona. He gained some fame as a Canadian nature writer, although he never attracted much attention in other countries.
This book is a potpourri of stories, philosophy, commentaries on conservation politics and on the Canadian national spirit, and other writings impossible to classify. The author's prevailing style ages poorly. He is fond of elaborate Victorian phrases, and is liable to choke any reader with a low tolerance for corniness.
The author's description of his life with beavers redeems the whole book. He is probably the only person ever to share his home with a family of these animals. (His cabin was built over the edge of a lake, and the beavers built their lodge in the wet end.) In this section of the book the author's overwrought style disappears. He describes his beaver friends' lives with a mixture of dry humor and passionate love that makes them vivid and unforgettable.

Creating beautiful gourds.......2007-06-11
As a novice in crafting with gourds this book gave me all the information from choosing a gourd to cutting, staining or painting, and creating texture to a gourd. Worth the money for anyone starting out on gourd crafting. Excellent resorce.
Awesomely good stuff.......2006-09-02
Awesome book! All around very detailed directions & photos for many beautiful projects. Plenty of inspiration to go around too, take a technique & expand. Wonderful book!
The most thorough introduction to gourd crafting that's out .......2004-08-28
This is the first book I purchased on the way to becoming a gourd crafter--I chose it not only because of the unusual and beautiful designs, but for Dyan Peterson's easy and encouraging approach/tone which other reviewers have pointed out. For me,the most valuable suggestion from this book has been to "branch out" and try unusual designs. Dyan Peterson's style (earthtones, natural designs and embellishments) is what originally attracted me. I'm not one for santas and cute pumpkins--these projects are somewhat more art than craft-oriented. I highly recommend this to seasoned gourd crafters who want to try something new, or to artists like myself who are interested in painting, sculpture and pottery and are looking for a new medium (an addicting one at that!) to experiment with. As Dyan Peterson would say, Happy Gourd Days!
A GREAT book on the art of "Gourdology".......2003-02-18
This was the very first book that I bought on Gourds and it gave me the inspiration and confidence to begin in the medium. Dyan's instructions are clear and thorough. I highly recommend this book!!
Beautiful Book!.......2002-12-02
For artist that want to try their hand at gourd art, this is a beautifully illustrated book. Artists are very visual , and this one will motivate you visually to get started or give you more ideas to create your own works of art.
Book Description
Since 1973, Storey's Country Wisdom Bulletins have offered practical, hands-on instructions designed to help readers master dozens of country living skills quickly and easily. There are now more than 170 titles in this series, and their remarkable popularity reflects the common desire of country and city dwellers alike to cultivate personal independence in everyday life.
Book Description
Written in an accessible, nonacademic style, this resource provides current research and real solutions to everyday problems faced by parents in a bilingual family. This research is used to help children deal with emotional issues and special situations, while helping parents understand language acquisition and cognitive development related to childhood bilingualism, whether by necessity or by choice. Issues addressed include the bilingual brain, school, biliteracy at home, emotional issues, and daily dilemmas. This information is used to provide guidance to parents in evaluating their own language situation in order to identify strengths the family can build on in promoting the children's bilingualism. Also addressed are questions and challenges that can arise when raising children bilingually and learning from the experiences and advice of other parents. An appendix of resources is also included.
Customer Reviews:
useful but too repetitive.......2005-11-03
This book provides parents with a lot of useful information about raising bilingual kids including how to choose a school, how to decide whether you want to raise your children bilingually and how to do it as well as how to deal with some of the commonest obstacles you may encounter when trying to keep your child interested in both languages. The problem I had with this book is that the author seems to go over the same topics again and again repeating herself a lot. For example she would mention the same recommendations on how to keep your children interested in learning both languages again and again and again which I found annoying. I expected her to go more in depth on how to raise children bilingually, I felt that she covered the topic quite superficially.
Finally, a book on bilingual children I like!.......2004-01-07
This one is realistic and specifically for parents teaching all languages. It's not as preachy as some of the other more popular titles. I like the format, allowing me to skip the parts that don't apply to our situation.
The positive review of Newcomer High School in San Francisco on page 139 didn't hurt. I used to volunteer there back in college.
What I liked less was the quote on page 122. Who's been lurking on some of the bilingual children sites??? Oh well, I guess that's my 15 minutes of fame...
Sooo helpful!.......2003-09-12
What I loved was that the author gets that families are all different and doesn't just give a list of rules, but instead explores the underlying issues bilingual families deal with when they think they are just dealing with language. I feel much more empowered about the decisions I'm making-that I'm doing it in a thoughtful way, that I've considered the basics. This was easy-reading, too, although there's alot of research and it isn't dumbed-down.

John Paul II has made greater strides toward understanding and atoning for Rome's complicity in anti-Semitism than any other pope in history. The Hidden Pope shows how and why this rapprochement is taking place by telling the story of John Paul's lifelong friendship with Jerzy Kluger, a Polish Jew. The text is a fascinating and detailed depiction of John Paul's personal life, but the book's real significance lies in its frank demonstration of the way Karol Wojtyla brings his personal experience to bear on the eternal truths of Catholic theology.
Customer Reviews:
Catholics and Jews.......2005-12-13
This book was so touching that I beg both Catholics and Jews to read it and meditate on the message. I laughed and cried. It is a great book.
A Great Story of Friendship.......2005-05-12
I bought this book a few years ago. The recent death of Pope John Paul II inspired me to take it off the bookshelf and start reading one night. If you are a gentile and think you know the meaning and impact of anti-semitism, think again and read this book. This is the history of 20th century Europe told through the lives and experiences of Lolek and Jerzy, two precocious small town Polish friends whose friendship helped change the course Catholic-Jewish relations after twenty centuries of misunderstanding and mistrust. It was providential that both ended up residing in Rome and worked together to change the perceptions of many people who have adopted anti-semetic attitudes based upon false assumptions and lies. Through their eyes see the horrors of Nazism and Communism as their friends and families are slaughtered by these inhumane political systems. By the end of the book you will feel like you know these two men (Pope John Paul II and Jerzey Kluger) as very very special human beings. It may be profane but they remind me of Pat O'Brien and James Cagney combination in the movie, "Angels with Dirty Faces." One, the saintly but very world wise priest and the other, a wise cracking but trouble prone friend. These two men teach us that at a personal level Jews and Christians are cousins in faith and these ancient misunderstandings should be resolved once and forever. The Hidden Pope would make a wonderful movie about two mensches for the ages!
Fantastic Book.......2005-04-19
I am an Irish Catholic that married a Jewish girl with roots in Poland, so this book took on special meaning for me. I was very proud of our pontiff for making extraordinary strides in Catholic-Jewish relations. His message still hasn't made it down to all levels of the church, but I hope that it will. Many Catholics still feel that Jews are doomed and must be converted/baptized in order to be saved, but the Pope clearly states that this is WRONG. We are all sons of Abraham, and the Jews are our older brothers.
I would like to write to Jurek Kluger and tell him so. If anyone knows his address or email, please forward it to me. Thank you!!
Incredible.......2001-01-20
This is a fabulous book. I am neither Catholic nor Jewish, but I was fascinated by the depth of the man we all call Pope. I had no idea of his personal journey, and the breadth of his goodness. Too many times, we don't look beyond the title and the robes. This is truly a saintly man.
Excellent for Jewish readers.......2000-01-27
This book gives an eye opening view of the current Pope. It shows how his upbringing in Poland led him to have his feelings of friendship with the Jewish people. He is presented as a true "tzadik". The book also briefly relates on how the works of Pope John XXIII and Cardinals Willebrands, O'Connor and Spellman have brought about a better understanding of Judaism in the Church. If their messages could only filter down to the populace...
