Book Description
Plains pioneer Elam Bartholomew grew up in Illinois and at the age of 21, in 1874, traveled to the hostile and barren frontier of western Kansas. Every day, from 1871 to 1934, he wrote in his diary over 22,000 entries on some 5,600 pages.
Elam Bartholomew is...the ideal settler interested in re-creating cultural and community organizations that existed in the East but also an extraordinary Kansan because of his activities as a naturalist. Patricia A. Michaelis, Kansas State Historical Society Bartholomew became a farmer and horticulturist, active in Kansas politics, local government, and church, "a scientist in the making" as he set his roots in western Kansas. He became a successful farmer because he had a keen sense of Nature's limitations...and he knew how to adapt to them.
Elam developed a passion for things botanical and took on the challenge of collecting and identifying specimens of fungus growth, in his dedication to finding controls of organisms that cause disease. His many thousands of specimens, collected and identified from 70 to 110 years ago, from 48 states, are in the herbaria of numerous institutions in the U.S. and abroad, and are still useful in research.
But it is Elam's "common man" approach to his observations of life in the late 1800s that piques our interest the way things were in the last 30 years of the 19th century and the first 34 years of the 20th.

Book Description
How often does a book come along that will change your life? The Surprising Power of Family Meals will. Digesting its information and implementing even a few of its helpful suggestions will benefit every member of your family in deep and lasting ways.
The Surprising Power of Family Meals is the first book to take a complete look at a ritual so common it flies beneath our radar screens. Virtually universal a generation ago, family supper has undergone a striking transformation. No longer honored by society as a time of day that must be set aside, some families see it as little more than a quaint relic. But others are beginning to recognize it as a lifeline – a way to connect with their loved ones on a regular basis and to get more enjoyment out of family life.
The Surprising Power of Family Meals presents stories, studies, and arguments from the fields of psychology, education, nutrition, family therapy, anthropology, sociology, linguistics, and religion. It provides examples of families and communities around North America responding creatively to the pressures of a 24/7 world to incorporate memories of their own childhood meals and to share strategies for taking what is best from our past and transforming it to meet current needs.
Customer Reviews:
A great guide on how to revive family meals in your home.......2006-12-10
A number of studies in the last few years have noted the positive effects of families eating together. Weinstein includes these studies in her book. But the great thing about the Surprising Power Of Family Meals is that this author doesn't just tell you why family meals are important, she also includes practical ways to revive the practice of eating together.
For example, she notes that today's moms are busier than ever before, plates full with careers, children's schooling, extracurricular activities, volunteer work, etc. For many families, that translates into eating fast food even when they don't want to. But instead of tut-tutting this reality, she offers a solution: when you get takeout, don't just eat it in the car. Take 20 minutes to seat yourselves around a table at the restaurant and eat together. The blessing is in the company, not just the food itself.
This book is an excellent guide for modern-day families struggling to build ties amid busy schedules, competitive academics and the growing atomization of the family unit.
Explores the power of families eating together.......2005-10-25
This well written book focuses on the benefits of families eating together. The author's premise is individuals and society will greatly benefit if families would make a greater effort to spend time together at the dinner table. The book explores benefits of regular family meals for everyone, singles, married couples, but the main discussion is on families with children. I was fascinated by all the different ways eating together helped parents and especially children.
The author points out that over recent decades we have developed a greater tendency to be increasingly busy. We try to squeeze good things into every hour of our children's day, for example: piano lessons, soccer practice, karate, play dates, in addition to the normal things like school and homework. Over the last thirty years the amount of discretionary time children have has dropped from 40% to 25%. In addition to this, more families have both parents working, and there are more divorced families. These and other factors lead to fewer and fewer families eating together.
Some of the benefits of family meals made sense and almost seemed obvious. Many studies have found that "The more often children eat with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use illegal drugs." (page 215) If children have strong connections to their siblings and parents they have less need for artificial ways to make themselves feel better. Along the same lines, often during a meal discussion of the extended family comes up, this helps children to feel greater connectedness. They learn about ways that other family members gotten through hard times, and when they have stress they are much more likely to last without falling apart.
One surprising benefit was that children who ate regularly with their families had a much less incident of eating disorders. One of the causes of eating disorders is children don't learn to self regulate. If they don't see good behavior modeled they won't learn to listen to their body and only eat when they are hungry. So families that are always on the run, eating food from MacDonalds between activities, or even those at home who eat separately in front of a TV, the children grow up being out of balance with how they eat.
Another surprising benefit was that children learn how to read faster when they have regular meals with their family. The research indicates that children learn vocabulary while talking with their family, so they only have to figure out what word the letters are forming. Children who have a smaller vocabulary have to both learn what word the letters are forming and what the word means.
There were many more benefits the author found that come from regular family meals. At the start of the book the author says that in many ways regular family meals is almost like a magic bullet in that it solves a number of problems.
As a side note, I liked the feel of this book. The paper was a nice grade of paper, and the book was well bound.
There are many good things we can do in life. Some things are vital. After reading this book I am more convinced that having regular family meals is vital. If you read this book you'll probably come to a similar conclusion.
Book Description
An update of the million-selling series from the 1950s, Make It Now, Bake It Later! The Next Generation answers the needs of today's busy home cooks with more than 200 mouthwatering recipes you can prepare in advance and put away till later. The roster of make-ahead dishes runs the gamut from starters and salads to main courses and desserts, and includes a number of much-loved classics, such as Cocktail Pizzas, Blue Cheese Roll-Ups, Barbecued Butterflied Lamb, Lasagna Lollapalooza, Shrimp and Cheese Casserole, Eggnog Mousse, and Chocolate Éclair Cake. Each recipe indicates exactly when to refrigerate or freeze the dish and how to cook it or otherwise prepare it before serving. This efficient, practical approach to mealtime frees up hours that might otherwise have been spent slaving over the proverbial hot stove!
In 1958, homemaker Barbara Goodfellow self-published the first Make It Now, Bake It Later! cookbook in an effort to raise money to fight cystic fibrosis. The original book and subsequent sequels went on to sell more than 1.5 million copies. Barbara's son Scott and his wife Ann were inspired to revive the phenomenon with all-new dishes adapted for today's palate when they realized that the family was still receiving requests for favorite recipes even though the books had long been out of print. Considering the emphasis on convenience in this century, the concept couldn't be more modern.

Fantastic, easy, yummy.......2007-07-18
This book was given to me as a gift so I new nothing about it, when I flipped through it I was pleasantly surprised at how good and easy the recipes sounded. Diving right in I started with the white chicken chili, it was fantastic and I have made it several times now. There are so many recipes in this book that are now our families favorite recipes! Great Job!
Good Looking Recipes .......2006-07-11
I flipped through 'Make It Now, Bake It Later' at a bookstore and I really liked what I saw. There is a good variety of recipes along with fun introductions and detailed heating instructions. Not all of the recipes are freezer recipes, but those that are not will keep in the fridge for a few days. I almost bought this book at the bookstore, but I'm glad I waited ($14.95 there vs $3.00 here).
Amazing home cooking.......2005-03-08
I recenty spent a long week-end with close freinds and we had several of the recipes from this book. They were delicious and easy to prepare. I would recomend this book to anyone who entertains and likes to spend time with their guests, not in the kitchen. It's a winner!

Customer Reviews:
Save your money.......2004-11-09
This might be the least useful book I have ever purchased on any subject. While there is a heavy emphasis on router hardware, the book has a 1993 copywright and most of the referenced hardware is no longer in production; and of course, current hardware is not mentioned. For information on jigs, there are far better sources which include plans and specs for actually building the jig--see the Nov. 2004 issue of Wood magazine, for example. And the author stops short of providing sufficient information to actually accomplish a task, such as making dovetail joints. I've gone through the book from front to back, and back to the front again, and have yet to find anything of value beyond a few insignificant tidbits. A more useful and up to date book is "Router Joinery Woorkshop" by Carol Reed.
Great adddition to the "library".......2002-12-07
Though this book covers a lot of the same ground as "Router Basics" its worth the cost for the additional information and jigs included. With these two books I feel I can accomplish almost any task with my router safely. I would reccommend this book to everyone who uses a router.
Almost perfect intro to routers, covering a wide range........2002-03-21
I'd give this book five stars if only some of the best tips weren't scattered a bit across the many excellent chapters. To get the full value of this great book, you really have to read, or at least skim, all of it. But, if you do, you'll know enough to start building all kinds of things that would be hard or impossible without a router. And, unlike many of the how-to woodworking books I've read, Spielman doesn't seem to have any quirky personal interests that dominate the text. This book is written well, covers the right ground, has good illustrations, and goes just a bit beyond basics to let you know what's waiting when you've mastered the first set of skills you'll need.
Book for beginner or advanced.......2001-08-20
Bought this book yesterday and have already read 1/2 way through. It is great,,, starts off with the basics the router, bits, whats avaliable pros and cons. You name it this book has it. I am just starting out and I learned more in a day of reading this book than I thought was possible. A MUST for the beginner like myself.
Patrick has done it again.......2001-06-20
i have had the pleasure of reading his work before, this book covers alot and it will keep me busy a good long while , i like the way it is writen, and he takes time to explain what is writen, and the photos go a long way in enhancing the subject if you can only buy one book about using a router get this one,

Book Description
Since 1973, Storey's Country Wisdom Bulletins have offered practical, hands-on instructions designed to help readers master dozens of country living skills quickly and easily. There are now more than 170 titles in this series, and their remarkable popularity reflects the common desire of country and city dwellers alike to cultivate personal independence in everyday life.
Customer Reviews:
Some really great advise and helpful information.......2006-07-12
Love the Storey Country Wisdom Bulletins. These are great because they are inexpensive and they offer basic useable information that most people can use. This bulletin on row covers and mulches is a time saver in so many ways. First the various methods of extending the garden season is something those who live in short growing season areas or where fall can bring a surprise cold snap will appreciate. And so many inexpensive ways to keep the cold at bay from seedling and plants. How many people ever thought to lay a piece of lattice on cement blocks as a shade cover for things like lettuce?
Then there are the easy to make, inexpensive row covers that are like mini green houses. And the floating mess covers that keep harmful pests out of tomatoes, cabbage etc crops, since they cannot get thru the mesh. So many people complain of various beetles and moths that wreak havoc on crops they have spent so much time planting and tending.
Have never used the black plastic as mulch where you cut and plant seedlings, but plan on it since it sure seems to save on weeding as well as watering.
Book Description
More meditations on the sacredness of daily experience by the author of
Being Home, Becoming Bread, and
Sharing Silence. Gunilla Norris records her observations on the inner life as seen in the turning of the seasons in her Connecticut garden.
Journeying in Place is filled with the joy of living.
Customer Reviews:
This book is one of my all time favorites.......2006-05-12
This is Ms. Norris' best book, in my opinion. I own all of her books, and by far this is my favorite.
Healing a Broken Spirit.......2001-01-01
My mother died unexpectedly in August 1995. She fell alseep and never woke up. For weeks after her death I could find no solace. My beloved garden lost all meaning to me. Several months later, in early November, I was browsing through the garden section of a bookstore I visited once or twice a year. A small hardcover book, wedged between large volumes of gardening advice and gorgeous picture books, caught my eye, and I took it down from the shelf. Its title, Journeying In Place: Reflections from a Country Garden, seemed rather long for a book of less than one hundred pages. I opened it and began reading. It is All Saints'Day, a year after the author, Gunilla Norris, found her mother dead. Sadness gripped me as I read the words that I could not utter, the words that would help me begin my journey back from grief: "The killing frost has happened both in my garden and in my life. I have lost my mother."
Gardeners understand and accept life's cycles better than most, I believe--the seasons, birth, death. Norris's "little" book focuses on her garden and the life in and around it through one year. In it she describes the spiritual, the "saints," that inhabit her two-acre plot of Connecticut farmland. From spring peepers to a feral cat, from dahlias to day lilies, from compost to harvest, she guides the reader through four seasons, discovering the "holy" in the everyday, and in doing so, finds meaning and peace. As the geese once again fly south, heralding the coming winter, Norris is uplifted. "I think of my mother and somehow I feel her presence inside me...No love is ever lost in this universe. No matter what season, what year, what place, love will always be turned into new soil."
This book found me during my darkest season, and Norris's words helped heal my broken spirit.

Copd information.......2007-01-29
This is a really good book, i bought this for my sister who was diagnosed with copd. Very easy to read and to understand. I read the entire book also so i could better understand the disease. Would recommend this to anyone who is suffering from copd or who has a loved one who is suffering. Nikki stewart
PRACTICAL COMMON-SENSE ON LIVING WITH COPD.......2002-09-18
THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!
To all who contributed to this fine book, my undying gratitude!
When first diagnosed with COPD, all I wanted to do was research, research, research! The more I read, the more frustrated I became - that is until I located Courage and Information. This book is so down-to-earth! And it is filled with prospectives of not only a physician (with no medical "jargon"), a psychiatrist (without all the normal "stuff") and...can you believe it?...A PATIENT. How unusual to find a book written, at least in part, from the patient's prospective. What a great idea! Like I said earlier, just good, practical, common-sense information.
Even my pulmonologist agrees that it is the best resource material he has seen! And as far as I'm concerned, that's the best recommendation of all!
It really WILL help me to live a better, more fulfilling life. It will help you too. But you've got to read it first. You'll be glad you did.
I KNOW I AM.
Helping You Find the Way.......1999-12-14
If you or someone you love has been given the diagnosis of COPD, you may be asking, What now? Is there anything that can be done? Is there hope? The answer is, Yes! Life can be good with COPD and this book is a most valuable resource for the COPD patient, caregiver, and health care professional.
As a respiratory therapist working in Pulmonary Rehab I see that patients who learn about their disease and how to cope with the changes it brings live healthier, happier lives. They know that education, exercise, and support as well as a positive attitude are so important.
Courage and Information for Life with COPD is not only your map to learning, among other things, about finding a great specialist, taking breathing medications, using supplemental oxygen if needed, and finding help and support in your community. It is the story of a lady who has experienced the devastation of the diagnosis and not only lives, but thrives with COPD! Jo-Von Tucker's search for knowledge has helped her to move from the role of patient / victim to that of person / survivor. You must know that you do not have to face COPD alone! When reading Courage and Information you will surely say, That's me. Jo-Von's been through some of the same things that I'm going through.
There are so many things you can do to help yourself. Changed as it may be, you can live a rich and full life, even with COPD. Courage and Information willl help you find the way.

Book Description
Goose Lane Editions has released a new biography that reveals the private world of one of Canada's most fascinating politicians. Almost four years after stepping down as Premier of New Brunswick, Frank McKenna is as much on the minds of political watchers across Canada as ever. The question today, however, is will he or won't he get back into the political ring. While the guessing game continues, Philip Lee's new book Frank: The Life and Politics of Frank McKenna provides fresh insights into the man and his politics. Frank takes readers on a journey into the political backrooms and corporate boardrooms that make up McKenna's world, and offers a compelling glimpse of the private life and hidden agendas of a consummate insider. The book examines McKenna's unique brand of entrepreneurial politics and his staunch determination to transform New Brunswick into a vibrant, self-reliant partner in Canada. In Frank, Lee uncovers the private man behind the public dealmaker, revealing an ambitious, calculating, passionate and highly intelligent individual. By providing an intimate look at McKenna's childhood on a subsistence farm, his marriage and family life, and his early fame as the lawyer who successfully defended boxing legend Yvon Durelle against a murder charge, Lee lays out the foundation that enabled McKenna to become one of the most successful and scrutinized politicians in Canadian history. Lee casts new light on McKenna's leadership during the Liberals' historic clean-sweep election victory in 1987, and the ten-year whirlwind of innovative social and economic policy that followed. McKenna's driven, no-holds-barred approach to governing frequently attracted controversy in his home province, and his forays onto the national stage made him one of the most fascinating politicians in the country. Whether he was voicing strong opposition to the Meech Lake Accord or convincing large companies to create jobs in New Brunswick at the expense of more prosperous provinces, McKenna always attracted the rabid interest of friend and foe alike.
