From the Publisher
This tremendous work provides in-depth, accurate, and insightful profiles of approximately 3,000 of the world's greatest military leaders and thinkers, from Julius Caesar and before to Norman Schwartzkopf. Arranged alphabetically, the biographical entries range from 200 to 1,000 words, and each includes, first, a swift overview of the subject, his birth and death dates (if known), and the major wars, battles, or campaigns in which he participated. This is followed, in most entries, by a main narrative of his life, and evaluation of the subject's character, abilities, and contribution, and finally a brief bibliography of books about him.

Excellent Source for Unbiased Information.......2005-02-23
"The Harper Encyclopedia of Military Biographies" is an excellent resource for information on more than 3,000 of the most important military figures of all time.
The listings are alphabetically listed, and provide information about the major events in the life of the figure, in what wars he served, when he lived, his legacy, major victories and defeats, enemies, allies, and other information. The listings range in size from several sentences to three or four pages, depending on the importance of the figure. Sources are listed at the end of every listing.
Anyone interested in military history should own this book. It reigns supreme as a quick reference guide to military figures. Another good source is "The Military 100", which provides biographies several pages in length about 100 of the most influential military leaders in history.
excellent resource, but.............2004-09-24
I cannot agree more with the above people. This book provides an incredible amount of information on each person and is an invaluable reference for any military historian. However as i was reading it, I discovered that several individuals were not included. After some research, I disovered a large number of soldier/statesmen who I felt deserved some mention, if anything to see their treatment in a work like this. I understand size restraints and readers may agree or not with my list, but that is what reviews are all about. I have grouped them in the following categories:
1. HOW COULD YOU MISSED THEM?
Alfred the Great, Attila, Bismark, Charles Martel,Cyrus the Great, DeGaulle, Epaminondas of Thebes, Robert Bruce, Tito.
2. IF YOU INCLUDED (FILL IN BLANK) WHY NOT:
English Admirals: Drake, Forbisher,
German Generals: Hans Hube, Spaatz.
French Warrior Kings: Francis I, Louis IX (St Louis).
US Generals: Simon Buckner, Terry Allen, Jubal Early, Gavin, Dupuy, Starry, Vuono, Fred Franks, Lew Wallace, John Buford.
English Warrior Kings: George II, Henry I.
British Generals: Richard O'Connor (N. Africa, WWII)
WHILE WE'RE AT IT, WHY NOT:
John Graham Montrose, Archibald Campbell Argyll, Henry (Hotspur) Percy, Charles Edward Stuart, Ealdorman Brintnoth (Maldon 991), Canute, Brian Boru, William Marshall, Robert Guiscard, Harold Godwinson, Harald Hardrada, El Cid, Boudicca, historical King Arthur (Mt Badon), Godfrey de Buillon, Raymond of Toulouse, Bohemond of Taranto, Charles the Bold of Burgundy, Sigismund (Holy Roman Emperor), Henry IV (ditto), Henry the Lion, Toktamish (Golden Hoard), Subutai, Theodoric of the Visigoths (Chalons), Ramses II, Antigonus, Mithrades of Pontus, Seleucus, Titus, Joshua Chamberlain, Marshall William von Roggendorf (Seige of Vienna)and why not any Biblical leaders (Joab for instance).
One nitpick; Ambrose Burnside was a good division commander and was not ready for higher command. He was however, a brilliant innovator. His amphibious operations along the east coast were very successful and his plan for the Crater operation would of succeeded if his superiors didn't replace his black unit, trained to exploit the detonation, with an inexperienced white unit.
A bookshelf must.......2004-08-31
Time and time again, I reference this book in my research of military history. It contains just about every important figure and many less important figures. There is no bias for ancient, dark, medieval, or modern history. In fact, it covers all ages and fights. I have also found that there is no nationalistic bias. These figures are presented in terms of their major accomplishments, without regard to value judgments.
Indispensable Printed Reference.......2003-07-07
While studying early greek "Christian Forfathers" and their lives and influences, ALOT of names get mentioned. When such a name is mentioned you think to yourself..: "who is this?", "why did the author mention this person?, what context should I look at this in?" Often times proper understanding behind the names mentioned can be the key that opens the door to context. I bought this book And it's companion
(ISBN: 0062700561) The Harper Encyclopedia of Military History From 3500BC to the Present (from a third party vendor). Niether one have let me down in accuracy or thoroughness. And has repeatedly helped me achieve a more accurate view of history itself as well as how it has been shaped by militarys. A 'must have' for any home library.
Dupuy's Harper Encyclopedia of Military Biography.......2001-05-08
One thing about it, this book and "maybe" another one would replace all those biographies that take up too much room on one's bookshelf (especially mine). I especially like it when a good majority of our nation's military leaders (those on the Joint Chiefs) are included when no other volume even comes close. Great job, Colonel, and also outstanding work, Mr. Johnson

Edison In Florida okay, but not fabulous.......2000-05-16
In his book, Edison in Florida, Olav Thulesius demonstates a talent for acquiring and compiling information about the famous inventor's life in the tropical state. However, the book fails to demonstrate the significance of Edison's life there. Particularly disappointing were his depiction of the inventor as environmentally responsible (he was far from it) and the chapter on the Nobel prize, which he was never in contention for, and has nothing to do with his life in Florida.

Book Description
Complementary medicine nutritionist and Ayurveda instructor Jennifer Workman's new and sensible approach to dieting has helped countless people to understand and work with their natural cravings to achieve and maintain their ideal weight. As the first Western nutritionist to make the ancient Ayurvedic principles practical and applicable, Workman explains why certain foods, including simple spices and culinary herbs like cinnamon, cocoa, cardamom, turmeric, cumin, basil, ginger, and wasabi can have a beneficial effect on weight-loss efforts, digestion, and health. In Stop Your Cravings Workman shows how eating the right combination of foods and flavors for certain body types and lifestyles, along with yoga and exercise, can diminish cravings to the point that food is no longer an issue of stress and worry.
Using a weight-loss and management program enlightened by the basic principles of Ayurveda, the five-thousand-year-old Eastern medical system, Workman guides readers in restoring the body's natural balance to improve overall health. By understanding the basic components of Ayurveda, which Workman introduces through simple examples, charts, and a self-test, readers will learn how their food choices (even the ones they thought were "healthy") can exacerbate health problems, including gastrointestinal disturbances, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, weight gain, arthritis, acne, headaches, menopausal symptoms, and PMS.
Most experts now agree that not everyone should eat the same thing or do the same type of activity because each person's metabolism and genetic makeup are different. Using the Stop Your Cravings self-test, readers can identify their own body and personality type and learn to understand what their body needs and how it responds to food, to the weather, and to everyday events in their lives. The Balanced Approach is a personalized nutrition/eating program of "clean" proteins, "good" fats, and non-gluten carbohydrates that emphasizes the sensuality of spices and flavors that add taste without adding calories.
A wise and sustainable program that improves health and longevity, Stop Your Cravings is ahead of the curve as more and more of us turn to holistic approaches to living.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome book.......2002-09-27
I've been looking for something that goes beyond traditional Western nutrition--the dogma of the macronutrient wars that we're all so familiar with (high carb/no fat, low-carb, etc...) and focuses on my individual needs, which can change. I checked out this book by chance, and was pleasantly surprised--it really just made sense of everything.
This is truly an East meets West approach to healthy eating--it combines the best of both approaches and makes the more unfamiliar Eastern approach very accesible. I think that the title "Stop Your Cravings" may not catch enough people's attention--it goes way beyond that. Don't be put off that this has an Ayurvedic slant--the menus and recipes span the globe from Indian and Asian to Mediterranean and even American cuisine. It's refreshing to see a diet book acknowledge that everyone is different and that some people (such as myself) will thrive on a lower carb/higher protein diet while others do better on a higher carb diet... dairy is fine for some but congestive and mucus forming for others... and high-gluten grains (which include the overrated "whole wheat" products) should be reduced for most people (not completely avoided) and low-gluten grains (rice, millet, quinoa) are favored.
I also like the exercise recommendatioins based on your Ayurvedic type--it really helped steer me in a direction where I now feel like I'm getting the right exercise for me. The fact that one of the most respected people in strength training endorsed the book (see Charles Poliquin's comments on the back cover) really made me give this book a serious look--and I'm glad I did.
Basically this book ackowledges (even celebrates) individuality and doesn't prescribe a rigid "one size fits all" regimen of diet or exercise. It's WAY beyond the typical diet and exercise book--it gives you the information to make choices that will help you achieve lasting health and weight loss based on your preferences and constitution.
I can't recommend it highly enough.
Finally! Someone puts it all together in 1 book.......2002-04-16
This one is a keeper! Take it from someone who has read 20+ books lately on diet and nutrition and holistic healing. Jennifer Workman puts it all together in one volume. This is a comprehensive approach to your total health; mind, body & spirit.
Her dietary recommendations around sugar and highly refined carbohydrates are in agreement with many others - don't eat them except in very small quantities. There is a quiz to determine your Ayurvedic type - Vata, Pitta or Kapha, with specific recommendations for each type from food to exercise.
Cravings are a GOOD thing!.......2002-01-09
It's the new year. Time for those annoying resolutions - the `fridge at work is jammed with co-workers' lunches who have decided to eat healthy, the fitness club is jammed with new people lifting weights and trotting on treadmills. And the bookstores are jammed with "new you" diet books, everybody claiming to have the ANSWER that we need. Don't make the mistake of lumping Jennifer Workman's book in with the others; it simply stands alone in its own special category. At its heart is Ayurveda, a 5000-year old Indian medical practice. You can't go wrong with something so timely. Combine that with a solid fitness and nutritional background, and you have someone who can help us make it in the modern world.
The book does focus on food but it's more than that - understanding why we grab certain foods, why some foods may not work well in some situations (cayenne aggravates someone like me in the dead heat of summer while a good friend thinks it's just fine), and why certain kinds of exercise don't get the weight off and why yoga does help a lot. The food is all do-able --- from the ginger, lemon, and honey-laced green tea (OK, I gave up coffee as the first thing to my lips in the morning) to kale sauteed with garlic and onions. What we don't want to give up is taste and Workman beautifully explains how to integrate the basic principles into daily eating. Nobody looks at my lunches and exclaims, "Oh yuck! WHAT are you eating now???" It's easy to move in and out of restaurants making interesting yet delicious choices based on my metabolism and genetic makeup without even thinking about it. Yes, chocolate is part of the plan! No guilt. Just good food.
The book takes on new meaning with all the stress inflicted upon us after September 11. How do we make everything stay in balance without stressing out and gaining a few tons? Jennifer's program isn't just about eating - it is about whole life, encompassing the mental, emotional and spiritual parts, too. Everything truly does work together. Lofty? Not really. It makes sense that at the end, she addresses the big picture and world hunger. How many diet books are concerned about that? Better hang onto this one.

If you only buy one crazy quilt/embroidery book, THIS IS THE ONE!!.......2007-10-11
I've read and own several books on crazy quilting. THIS IS THE BEST!! It has tons of information on embroidery stitches, motifs (patterns, sorta) and instructions. Michler is a knowledgeable author and I highly recommend any of her books on crazy quilting but this is my personal favorite.
Great Book.......2007-06-07
I have really used this book. It has lots of designs and has given me great ideas.
Great for Crazy Quilters.......2006-07-28
I love this book. Sure, I could find many pictures in other books but this one has the motif outlines by catagory. If you know nothing about some CQ techniques, get a different book.
This book shows how to transfer your designs, how to create your own alphabet and has lots of designs to copy. Many flowers, bugs, dragons and such. Some surface techniques I had not done. (a vintage lady with 3D clothes)
This book is a joy.

Customer Reviews:
Great Reference Book!.......2003-04-07
We never thought we'd fit into the the old stodgy grandparent mold, so this book was a must-have for us "boomer" grandparents. Very informative and easy to read.
Are you guilty?.......2002-01-13
If you have incredible guilt over the way you raised your children or have amnesia about that experience, this is the book for you. The authors seem to assume that we all fit the stereotype of 60s boomers and need to remake ourselves as grandparents. From a quote on p 19, "Through grandparenthood, we are now convinced that we have a reprieve, a dispensation from God. We have another chance to help rear children." Isn't the role of rearing the children that of the parents?!
There are some useful insights in this book, but they are few and far between. Find the book in a library and turn to the resources in the appendix.
Best Grandparenting Book I've Seen - New Hampshire reader.......1998-10-29
The Nanas and the Papas is the best one-stop-shopping book on grandparenting, whether you're a baby boomer or not. It's loaded with great tips and advice applicable to both nuclear and blended families. The real-life anecdotes are excellent. This is a very well researched book that covers all the bases. The Zullos have done a thorough job.
Easy to follow - great reference.......1998-10-27
A friend told me of this book she had received as a gift for her 50th birthday. I was thrilled to see that finally there is a book for us "younger grandparents"
A Definate Winner!!.......1998-10-20
What a GREAT book! Helpful, informative, and entertaining as well! Add this one to your Christmas list of gifts for the grandparents in your life.

Book Description
Ari Goldman’s exploration of the emotional and spiritual aspects of spending a year in mourning for his father will resonate with anyone who has lost a loved one, as he describes how this year affected him as a son, husband, father, and member of his community. Through the daily recitation of kaddish, Goldman discovered that he could connect with and honor his father and his mother in a way that he could not always do during their lifetimes. And in his daily synagogue attendance, he found his fellow worshipers to be an unexpected source of strength, wisdom, and comfort.
Customer Reviews:
A rich book for the soul.......2006-07-24
Living a Year of Kaddish lets us look in on a man's search to come to grips with the devastating loss of his father, something I recently experienced. Reading this book gave me great comfort and I thank Ari Goldman for baring his soul in a way that helps others.
The Value of Religious Rituals in Confronting Grief.......2003-10-16
This is a lovely book which shows how the Jewish ritual of Kaddish helped the author come to grips with his father's life and death, as well as his own life. Being an Episcopalian married to someone whose Mother was Jewish (but did not attend temple), I found the author's description of his shul, the life within it, and the practice of prayer to be extremely powerful and informative. And the spiritual journey that the author embarked upon in the process was engaging. I had read his early book about his sabbatical at Harvard Divinity School, and was inspired by that work as well. The sharing of personal stories helps all of us live. Thanks to this author for again helping us on our own journeys.
More than a memoir..........2003-09-18
Living a Year of Kaddish portrays one man's search to come to terms with the loss of his father. But it does more than that: it shows, with vivid and stirring vignettes, how the most painful pages of a life (divorce, estrangement, and death are some of the ones Goldman grapples with) need not be turned with the bitterness of a victim, but can be read with the openness of a student who is willing to learn, and to grow. Goldman is an Orthodox Jew, and as the title of his book makes clear, he draws first and foremost on the religious and cultural traditions that have shaped his family for generations. But he does not write for fellow believers alone. A keen-eyed observer with a gift for distilling the universal from the particular, he speaks in terms that will resonate with a wide and varied readership.
a prayer renews him; a book renews you.......2003-08-28
When Ari Goldman was six, his parents divorced. They were as different as the North and South poles. Goldman remained part of each of their lives through his commitment to 1950's-style Orthodox Judaism. In September 1999, Ari Goldman turned fifty. He had a party. The next morning he got a call. His father, 77, was dead in Jerusalem. The funeral would be in a few hours, since Shabbat would soon begin in Israel. Goldman tore his shirt and began to mourn. He sat shiva for his father only one day, since Sukkot started the next day. He went on to mourn for his father for the required 30 days, and then the full 11 months. Ari inherited his father's tallit (which he wore and made his own). In this memoir, he tells the reader about the people he touched and those who touched him during his year of saying kaddish. He writes that while the kaddish will not bring back the dead, it will bind one to the community horizontally, and redeem a death vertically. Ari finds that so many people have their own kaddish stories to share with him, and he shares some with us. In this book, he knits a story being an "avel", of mourning, of loss (loss of parents, loss of one's regular seat in the synagogue). He writes about mentoring, on modeling an upright life to his kids, and his brand of Fifties-style Judaism. There are also asides on the various people he meets when he seeks out shuls in which to say kaddish on the road. He explores his daughter's conflicts when she is forced to move to the women's side of the mechiza at the age 12. He reflects upon the power of the kaddish and how the passage of time changes his approach to the prayer and the process. He honestly asks himself why he tells people he is mourning. Is it a badge on his lapel? Is he seeking some sort of status? Comfort? Honor? It is a story of loss, of growth, as well as the fascinating story of how his neighborhood shul became resurrected.
