    Book Description

This thrilling book details the personal stories of men who have, through their extraordinary valour and devotion to duty, left their mark on the history of the British Army's elite Special Forces regiment. From the early days in North Africa during World War II to the Falklands, the Gulf War and conflict in the former Yugoslavia, this is a book packed with stories of outstanding bravery in the face of increadible hardship. The daring and audacity of the initial SAS operations against Rommel's Africa Korps provide stark contrast to the clandestine undercover work against the IRA in Northern Ireland - but whatever the conflict, their courage and exploits make for riveting reading. Barry Davies BEM is a highly respected authority on the SAS, and was decorated during service with the elite unit. This book is crammed with first-hand accounts of operations by the men who were in the thick of the action.

                  Book Description

The Special Air Service (SAS) is the toughest regiment in the British Army and is f?ted as the best Special Forces unit in the world. Members of the SAS live in a shadow world, unable to divulge their whereabouts or mission details, living a hard life of combat and secrets. This book brings to life the stories of 20 soldiers who were genuine heroes, although many were never recognised as such during their lives or even in death.

Who Dares Wins contains former SAS soldier Pete Scholey's memories of some of those men. It is a book about soldiers who bravely fought for their country in extreme circumstances with no desire to be famous, f?ted or rewarded. Each chapter tells us about the life and combat stories of the men who, although capable of superhuman effort, were very much human beings. Some of the stories of Pete's heroes have never been heard before and certainly none of these dramatic tales of combat and life in the regiment have been told in such a touching and compelling manner.

In my past life I was Ms. Brooks. I was born in 1873 and died in 1933. I had 3 children. I died at an earlier age due to radariation. I know live in the body of man named Gregory Morrison. Mr. Morrison had not idea that I was in the light before and now here. I have waited for the right moment to let him know this. Mr. Morrison is handing everything very well. I hope that he will achieve those things in his life time that I did not or was not able to achieve. Mr. Morrison is married and has 2 children of his own. His children are from the light too. We come back and forth from the world sometime only once but sometimes 2 or 3 times in our new life or heavely place. Again it is nice to be able to walk on the earth and see and do those things that I never really had the the chance to do. Driving a new car, having the proper medical care when needed, cable TV, and just a better life totally. Once again thank you for reading this letter and may you travel in peace too. Ms. Brooks

The aim of Lesbian Sex Secrets for Men is to teach men what lesbians know about pleasing women. This is more than a primer on body parts and oral sex (though yes, there's plenty of that). It's also about how to talk (the best way to find out what your partner likes), how to listen, how to open up, and how to get your mind off your member. The chapter entitled "Foreplay? Honey, It's All Play!" should make women cheer. The writing is clever, graphic, intimate, and festive. No subject is off limits: sex toys, sex during menstruation ("When the Moon Is Between Her Legs"), "Finger Love (Becoming a Digital Master)," "The Lowdown on Going Down," anal play ("Ass-istance for Two"), and much more.

In many short quotes, women frankly discuss their likes and dislikes. Notes of special importance, titled "Honey, Come Closer," include:

If men understood what great sexual tools their brains, mouths, and hands were, say the authors, they'd see sex and pleasure differently and communicate in new ways. This book is guidebook and roadmap--and very entertaining besides! (Warning: If you're offended by slang terms for sex and sexual parts, this book isn't for you.) --Joan Price

                      Book Description

For men, the intimate workings of the female body have long remained one of the great mysteries of the universe. What gives her the most pleasure? Where should you be touching her--and how? Fortunately, there are some people who can offer men the empirical knowledge gained from a lifetime of pleasing women--and getting pleased by them. This frank, frolicsome, and wonderfully illuminating book draws on the sexual advice and sex secrets of lesbians to help men become better lovers. A groundbreaking dialogue between straight men and gay women, and an erotic look inside the often hidden world of lesbian sex, Lesbian Sex Secrets for Men reveals a whole new approach to pleasure for men and the women they love. At the same time, this book proves that while sex is something we all do naturally, a little focused effort--and a few simple lessons--can open up a whole new world of enjoyment.

                      3 out of 5 stars No secrets.......2004-08-31

This is a very interesting book with an equally interesting title but the excitement stops right there. There were no secrets nor any extraordinary information or techniques that I haven't read in countless other books. What I found strange in this book, that supposedly was intended for men, was an over abundance of unnecessary lesbian advocacy and grand standing. The over generalization of men as bumbling, insensitive and unknowledgeable became very annoying early in this book. While this book does deliver basic knowledge and a necessary biology refresher, I wouldn't recommend it. The author is obviously condescending to its target audience, for reasons unknown but I do suspect that the authors of this book are secretly hoping that your wife/girl friend pick up this book and discover how inept that you are to a "sweet lesbian lover".

5 out of 5 stars Fun for both guys and girls.......2004-08-16

This is a great book for both couples and singles to add a little spice to your sex life. While the title might say it is only for men, it definetly can be for women as well. The book is also very serious, and does not make jokes out of your sex life. Overall, a great how to book and definetly not your old school, Joy of Sex.

3 out of 5 stars If Your A Rookie At Getting Nookie Give It A Try.......2004-07-04

I bought the book Lesbian Sex Secrets For Men by Jamie Goddard and Kurt Brungardt for my husband as part of a "Spoof" Father's Day gift pack. We read the book together last Saturday night. In this book the audience is promised by the authors the secrets that every man wants to know about making love to another woman and never asks, but the authors fall a bit short on their delivery of that promise.

A good example of that is the fact that no less than 28 pages are dedicated to the art of kissing. To say that parts a slow read is an understatement. Then starting in chapter titled "Sapphic Arts" the tone of the book turns downright crude starting with the section titled "Finger !ucking" and goes downhill from there. It takes very little creativity to call the art of sex !ucking, and a woman's vagina a !ussy which these two do repeatedly throughout the book.

We did learn a couple terms we were unaware of such as fisting, and found the twenty pages dedicated to the different aspect of dildo usage somewhat humorous at times (never considered boiling one :P ). Overall if you are a rookie at getting nookie we would recommend this book. However if your not, don't expect to get hot, because you will not :) .

                      5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!.......2004-03-06

This book is one of my favorites! It is a book about women, a book that unveils our sexuality and secrets. Any man, who wants to understand us better and be a great lover, MUST read this book!!! This book tells who we are, how we feel, what we want, what our cravings are, and what our frustrations are. For many people it is very difficult to talk about sex and sometimes heterosexual couples pretend that their sex life is great but deep inside they know that isn't true. As a heterosexual woman I never thought that lesbians had so much fun, but I can totally see how the female understanding they share is key to have great sex. If guys had a better understanding of women we could also have as much fun!!! So guys leave your pride aside and open your horizons to AWESOME SEX!!!!!

                      5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2004-03-05

This book is probably one of the best books I've read. To me it is a book about women, who we are, how we feel, what are our cravings and our desires, our hopes and our frustrations, the secrets of our sexuality! this books says it ALL.
I think any man interested in understanding women's sexuality and feelings, must read this book!!!!! I am an heterosexual woman and I never thought lesbians had so much fun, but after reading this book I can totally see how the female understanding they share is extremely valuable to having an amazing sex life; so for all of you guys who want to understand us and please us, this book is for you!!!!

                      Book Description

Uplifting eroticism while demolishing myths, "Erotic Book" offers a fresh and exhilarating perspective on the sensuality and beauty of the female body. The author provides readers of "Erotic Book" with insights on what aspects of the female body actually arouse men, and why almost every woman potentially possesses an intensely erotic body. "Erotic Book" rebels against the objectification of women, and presents an understanding of female sensuality that integrates the feminine mind with the feminine body, creating a transcending erotic presence.

                      3 out of 5 stars One man's views.......2007-07-18

I'm captivated by female beauty, so I was interested at the prospect of a book dedicated to the subject from an artist's perspective. Unfortuately, the author has framed some of his statements to be representative of "most men." It's annoying and sloppy. For example, commenting that many women now shave their pubic hair, he observes that "most men" actually prefer women with pubic hair (without even broaching whether its trimmed or groomed). He fails to acknowledge that preferences vary widely and offers no data to support his statement. He has a section on body piercing where he goes to some lengths to explain how he's finally come around to accept the idea, but only in certain parts of the body, and again women are better off unadorned. Opinions on that subject also vary from person to person. Rather than discussing his preferences as strictly his own (e.g. "As a painter, I prefer 'x' because...") or doing some actual psychological or historical research, this book comes across as the organized ramblings of one opinionated man (whose opinions I don't share) - not intelligent discourse about a beautiful, age-old topic. I returned the book.

5 out of 5 stars A poetic hymn to the female body.......2006-11-12

This slim book is not just a delightful account of the female body, but a passionate hymn to the beauty of woman.
Intensely sensous, but not pornographic at all, it lovingly examines and exalts all the components of her body, underlining their significance from an aesthetic and erotic viewpoint.
It should be required reading for all photographers and painters alike as an introduction to the appreciation of the female body.
Art teachers had better leave anatomy manuals on the bookshelves from time to time and refer to this book as they teach life drawing classes, to arouse the students' genuine interest in what they are drawing.

5 out of 5 stars Erotic Book: Erotica Secrets of Sexy Female Bodies for Men And Women.......2006-08-01

Erotic Book is an open and honest study of the female form, through the eyes of the author. Filger's background in Fine Art Photography is evident by the exquisite detail in which he views every nuance of the female form. Anyone who does not see the beauty in their own body needs to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book About Women's Bodies & Female Sensuality.......2006-07-04

This is an amazing book, more so as the author is man, but one with unusual perception when it comes to understanding the female psyche about their bodies and sexuality. Sheldon Filger presents the entire female body as an artistic tapestry, and enables the reader to understand the heavenly beauty that is the body of a woman. I really felt empowered after reading this appropriately-named "Erotic Book." Women will truly feel liberated after reading it--and men will also have new insights, and a wonderful gift for their special woman.

Those who buy books on juicing tend to do so mostly for the exotic combinations listed. In JUICE ALIVE, Steven Bailey and Larry Trivieri provide that and far more. Their text is a primer on the art of juicing, one that is written for the layman. For those who wish to first read about juicing recipes, they can turn to the second half of the book for the many recipes indicated. What is on interest is that Bailey and Trivieri examine juicing as if it were a mixture of art and science. They begin with an erudite chapter on the basic need for juicing, and how juicing fits in with the larger scope of a healthy diet and lifstyle. They follow with a history of juicing beginning with the ancient Greeks and continuing up to the present day. This historical overview was a little detail heavy yet it serves to remind the reader that juicing is not simply a modern health fad reserved for the Hollywood elite. Their chapter on the nutritional benefits of juicing is of concern to readers who wish to know how enzymes and amino acids interact with digested food to produce energy, which is an area not generally well understood by the layman. I found the digression on the acid-alkaline balance to be of particular use since the choice of fruits and vegetables juiced will dictate whether the juice absorbed will be acidic (unhealthy) or alkaline (healthy). The authors follow with a lengthy list of juicing machines and price ranges, and for those who watch infomercials, the LaLane Power Juicer heads the list.

Since juicing is more than just inserting fruits and vegetables down a chute, it is incumbent that any juicing author explain what to juice and how to juice. This is the authors' strong point. They insist on the need to buy only organic products, and to mix them in combinations that will produce a desired result, most often an optimal acid-alkaline balance that is a requisite for vibrant health. Along the way, they include a staggering variety of herbs that one may add for flavor and health. They also suggest that juicing ought to be part of a periodical fasting in which the user can purge his system of accumulated toxins by eschewing solid food for a week in favor of selected juices. This part of the book was detailed but still the average user can design his own juice fast based on the paradign given. Bailey and Trivieri conclude with a listing of common health problems from acne to allergies to whooping cough and yeast infections. In this section, they include relevant juicing ingredients tailored to that medical issue. Part of the problem I had here was that their juicing ingredients excluded nutritional supplements that ought to round out any self-employed health regimen. Still, in JUICE ALIVE, Bailey and Trivieri present a text that is clearly written and authoritative such that the neophyte juicer can literally drink himself to good health.

                                  Book Description

The result of more than twenty years' collaborative work focusing on the heart of successful parenting, the acclaimed five disciplines program developed by Drs. Robert L. Johnson and Paulette Stanford has helped thousands of African-American children and their parents cope with the myriad of social challenges they confront each day. Now making this special prescription available to all parents, Strength for Their Journey offers insight into five interconnected areas:

                                  • Traditional Discipline: The Strength to Embrace Parental Boundaries

                                  • Racial Discipline: The Strength to Negotiate the Realities of Being a Racial Minority

                                  • Emotional Discipline: The Strength to Resist Negative Peer Pressure and Temptation

                                  • Practical Discipline: The Strength to Excel in School, Career, and Financial Pursuits

                                  • Mind-Body Discipline: The Strength to Maintain Positive Physical, Mental, and Spiritual Health

In a culture that often grants fewer safety nets to nonwhite children, Strength for Their Journey is a crucial book that African-American parents can turn to again and again, paving a path of confidence and joy for future generations.

Based on research findings, Smart and Sassy: The Strengths of Inner City Black Girls utilizes a foundation of theology, philosophy, sociology, human development, and contextual psychodynamic theory to understand how Black girls create meaningful identities. These substantive knowledge areas are interwoven with strength and health perspectives to theorize and interpret adolescent lives. Presented in their own language, the Black girls' factual self-narratives, group interactions, dialogs, and case illustrations reveal visceral and poignant stories that clearly indicate they are courageous, intelligent, and spirited. Smart and Sassy offers a developmental- and contextual-based model of intervention that can be used as a supportive counseling guide for adolescent maturation. Stevens asserts that an examination of such girls and their families provides information about competence and social assets that promote healthy development and positive social adjustment. Although it offers a particular ethnic focus, this text provides authoritative insight into the developmental issues confronting all adolescents. Its framework promotes critical thinking skills in both undergraduate and graduate students, and each case illustration features study questions and issues for discussion.

This book was first published in 1972 when the author was Director of Research for the National Urban League, which was headed by Mr. Vernon E. Jordan, Executive Director. While the 1999 sequel has been favorably received, the author continues to receive numerous requests for copies of the original work that has been out of print for many years. Therefore, this reprint edition also includes an epilogue, Thirty Years Later, which describes the impact of social forces and policies on the social and economic status of African American families since the 1970's. It also examines the role of the five cultural strengths on the functioning of contemporary African American families.

Returning to his innovative work of twenty-five years ago, Robert Hill once more offers an incisive analysis of five key cultural strengths of African-American families. With compassion and eloquence, he argues that these existing strengths provide a solid foundation upon which to develop the kind of public policies and self-help initiatives that will truly promote the interests, not only of the African American community, but of our diverse nation as a whole.

                                        Book Description

The majority of African American children live in homes without their fathers, but the proportion of African American children living in intact, two-parent families has risen significantly since 1995. Black Fathers in Contemporary American Society looks at father absence from two sides, offering an in-depth analysis of how the absence of African American fathers affects their children, their relationships, and society as a whole, while countering the notion that father absence and family fragmentation within the African American community is inevitable. Editors Obie Clayton, Ronald B. Mincy, and David Blankenhorn lead a diverse group of contributors—encompassing a range of disciplines and ideological perspectives—who all agree that father absence among black families is one of the most pressing social problems today. In part I, the contributors offer possible explanations for the decline in marriage among African American families. William Julius Wilson believes that many men who live in the inner city no longer consider marriage an option because their limited economic prospects do not enable them to provide for a family. Part II considers marriage from an economic perspective, emphasizing that it is in part a wealth-producing institution. Maggie Gallagher points out that married people earn, invest, and save more than single people, and that when marriage rates are low in a community, it is the children who suffer most. In part III, the contributors discuss policies to reduce absentee fatherhood. Wornie Reed demonstrates how public health interventions, such as personal development workshops and work-related skill-building services, can be used to address the causes of fatherlessness. Wade Horn illustrates the positive results achieved by fatherhood programs, especially when held early in a man's life. In the last chapter, Enola Aird notes that from 1995 to 2000, the proportion of African American children living in two-parent, married couple homes rose from 34.8 to 38.9 percent—a significant increase indicating the possible reversal of the long-term shift toward black family fragmentation.

Black Fathers in Contemporary American Society provides an in-depth look at a problem affecting millions of children while offering proof that the trend of father absence is not irrevocable.

                                        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Black Marriage and Fatherhood by the Numbers.......2006-11-07

This book uses numbers to encourage black men to marry and be full-time fathers. The contributors are both male and female. In some articles, race is just tacked in: "Fatherlessness is a problem in America, oh yeah, especially in black communities."
This book was written by numbers crunchers and will only impress those who have full faith in numbers. There is no advice about how to get a dad to pay child support. There is no suggestions on how to get a man or father to propose to a woman. The final third of the book looks at fatherhood initiatives. It tries to apply practice to theory, but it is not simplistic. It too is very academic.
This book says children, including black children, are financially and emotionally better off in married-couple homes than single-headed (usually by the mother) homes. Still, the book is not sexist. It never makes essentialist claims like "Only a black man can raise a black son!" The book never brings up interracial marriage; the tacit suggestion is that when a black man marries, it will be with a black woman. Readers in interracial unions may feel wrongfully overlooked in this book. The book is heterosexist in many ways. Contributors lament that all black men aren't married without remembering that some black men wouldn't want to marry any woman and those black men in love with each other are not legally allowed to marry in most states. One contributor even writes, "Married men do better in the employment arena because employers know they are heterosexual." The homophobia of said employers is never condemned or commented upon.
Though not a huge book, it may be hard for some to follow. I found myself being informed about topics A, B, C, and D, but never understanding how the authors try to connect A to D. I saw many trees but never really understand how the forest was being grown. This book continually says class-privileged, employed black men are the most likely of their group to get and stay married; I think this group is also the people most likely to read this book (and pat themselves on the back).

This text includes eleven chapters devoted to eleven different types of ethnic American families. Students are encouraged to compare and contrast these families—their structures, lives, and experiences—and thus place them into meaningful cultural perspective.

With numerous selections designed to reinforce the goal of empowering clients to take charge of their lives, this revised and updated second edition of The Black Family serves a two-fold purpose. It extends the small but growing body of strength-oriented literature to include African-American families and it serves as a natural extension of current texts on African-American families to provide social workers and the education community with a broader framework for understanding the needs of Black families.

Augustus Dunbier was a prolific, Nebraska-born oil painter known for colorful landscapes, still life, portraits, and figures. He painted throughout the Southwest where, from 1920, he established a seasonal pattern of working in Taos, New Mexico and enjoyed the art colony life with such artist friends as Walter Ufer and Eanger Course. Dunbier painted the mountains of Montana and Colorado, the coasts and harbors of Massachusetts, Maine, Oregon, and Alaska, the deserts of New Mexico and Arizona. But the greater part of his impressionist landscapes were painted in Nebraska with its hills and trees, lakes and rivers, farm scenes and cityscapes. Very highly recommended for students of American art history, Augustus W. Dunbier: Paint For The Love Of Color showcases Dunbier's work with more than one hundred color plats and 15 b/w photographs, and offers the a biographical text of his life and work.

                                                  Book Description

Born in 1940, Lillian Faderman was the only child of an uneducated and unmarried immigrant Jewish woman. Her mother, whose family perished in the Holocaust, was racked by guilt at having come to America and left them behind; she suffered recurrent psychotic episodes. Her only escape from the brutal labor of her sweatshop job was her fiercely loved daughter, Lilly, whose poignant dream throughout an impoverished childhood was to become a movie star and "rescue" her mother. Lilly grew up to become Lil, outwardly tough, inwardly innocent, hungry for love and success. A beautiful young woman who was learning that her deepest erotic and emotional connections were to women, she found herself in a dangerous but seductive lesbian underworld of addicts, pimps, and prostitutes. Desperately seeking to make her life meaningful and to redeem her mother's suffering, she entered the University of California at Berkeley and worked her way through college as a burlesque stripper. A brilliant student, she ultimately achieved a Ph.D. At last she became Lillian, the woman who in time became a loving partner, a devoted mother, an acclaimed writer, and a charismatic, groundbreaking scholar of gay and lesbian studies. Told with wrenching immediacy and great power, this is an extraordinary memoir: the nakedly honest -- and very American -- story of an exceptional woman and her remarkable, unorthodox life.

I savored every bit of this memoir. There are, sadly, so few really well-written lesbian memoirs. "Naked" is a terrific book and an engaging reading experience. I highly recommend it.

                                                  5 out of 5 stars Author ! Author !.......2006-05-08

I wonder if other men love this book like I do. I loaned this book to someone then forgot whom I loaned it to. Doesn't matter. I've thought about this story a thousand times.

I love my own mother deeply, tenderly, but if I could have chosen my own mother, notwithstanding some very tempting candidates out there, Lillian Faderman would have been numero uno. I'll say it. I'm a softie for strong character; people who have been dragged through the muck and not only survived, but emerged from the pure hell of life to bring honor to themselves and to those who have struggled for the right to their own dignity.

I bought this book the first day it hit the shelf and read it from cover to cover and wished it would not end. I wanted to read it and I didn't want to read it because I've spent maybe two decades sculpting and perfecting this pedastal I've had Lillian Faderman on and I was worried that she would demolish it by turning out to be a prep school and legacy brat from the suburbs. No danger here.

Everything I know about the real lives of lesbians I learned from Dr. Faderman and, I'll be honest, I didn't think I'd enjoy anything else after Maya Angelou's "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings." I read Radclyffe Hall's "The Well of Lonliness" and was sickened by it's twisted logic and it stamp of approval from kook psychologist Havelock Ellis. I thought Gertude Stein's "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas" merited points for chutzpah. But Stein, Hall and Angelou are no Lillian Faderman.

This book is rich with terror, heartbreak, despair, grief and finally - triumph. It's what "Brokeback Mountain" should have been rather than another story about how a homosexual dies or gets murdered in the end.

I've changed my mind. It does matter. Whoever has my copy of this book - GIVE IT BACK !

By far, Lillian's best yet. Her previous writings were way too heady for me, but this one held my attention. For those looking for the juicy tidbits of Faderman's personal life, this book pretty much hits the spot. I am looking forward to the sequel -- this woman has much more to tell.

Ms. Faderman has always been an outstanding scholar, giving the academic and Lesbian worlds her well researched, and highly informative books about Lesbians and Lesbianism. She has also written other scholarly works that are highly recommended, if not a little heavy for most readers. In her latest venture, her memoir " Naked in the Promise Land", Ms. Faderman shows her readers another side of her makeup, her personal side. The Memoir is as interesting for what it reveled about Ms. Faderman's past life as well as what has been carefully left out. Readers may well have to wait for a bioghapher to tell the complete story of Lillian Faderman's life for it appears that she is willing to go only so far in its telling.
What is also a point to note is the muse that Ms. Faderman has chosen to use. It defiantly is not the carefully structured formal English she used for her academic books, nor should it be. However, as a memoir it reads more like an Ann Bannon or Clair Morgan novel, and this, perhaps, is part of its charm as well as its draw.
Finally, in the telling of part of her life story the reader is made aware that Ms. Faderman is a consummate actress. After all she studied hard to learn the techiques. As such, one has to wonder if what she has presented to the world after her "Sunset Strip" life, is nothing more than another act in one more carefully constructed costume.

                                                  5 out of 5 stars Riveting!.......2003-07-07

I finally snagged a copy of the book and did not put it down to do anything but eat and sleep. As a young lesbian who is not nearly thankful enough for her older lesbian sisters, I could not believe what Lillian went through in her life.
A few people have summarized the book, but I'll tell you what had me glued to the pages: Lillian's determination. She always succeeded whether she was trying to become a movie star, get better grades in high school, trick a strip club into believing she was famous (and therefore making more money), make her mother and aunt believe she was straight, get her PhD, move up the ranks at a university, come out as a lesbian and lesbian mom, and become a world-renown author.
She was a pioneer, believing in herself when there was no guarantee that she would succeed. She hoped for the best, worked hard, and managed to change higher education all over the country. Thank you, Lillian!
