5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, Amazing Author.......2007-08-26

I learned of Sheila's book, "The Courage To Be A Single Mother after seeing her on Oprah. Sheila is an amazing author who speaks to the heart of women with children who are trying to pick up the pieces after a failed relationship. Although the book is geared for single mothers who have become single by way of divorce, many of the issues that Sheila addresses in her book such as: custody, finances, becoming whole, feeling good enough as a single mother are applicable regardless of how you came to be a single mother.

You should also familiarize yourself with Sheila's online community 50 Steps On The Path To Yourself where you will gain incredible wisdom and insight from her weekly motivational e-mails.

5 out of 5 stars I highly recommend "The Courage To Be a Single Mother." .......2007-03-30

I recently took a head-first dive into the book, "The Courage To Be a Single Mother" by Sheila Ellison -- for my second time.

I first read this book in a haze almost seven years ago, when I became a single mom to my baby girl. Now the second time around, I'm more grounded and stronger. I'm truly able to swallow what Ellison says about loving myself, knowing what I want, and moving on. I greatly appreciate her insights.

If you're going through a divorce, I highly recommend "The Courage To Be a Single Mother."

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book, great author.......2005-05-28

I read this book a few years ago, not too long after my own separation and divorce. It inspired me and I also had a chance to be a member on the forum that Sheila had for single moms at the time. She asked for volunteers to be interviewed for her second book "The courage to love again". Of course I offered and she called me at home to interview me! What a thrill! I had a chance to speak with her personally and share some of my own experiences. Not too long after that, she mailed me a copy of her newly published book, signed. She is as wonderful in real life and she is in the words of her books!

5 out of 5 stars It tells you exactly how the process is.......2003-07-01

Any woman that is still undecided to get divorced should read this book!

      5 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!.......2003-01-02

This book helped me get through my own divorce experience and realize the things I was going through (fear, frustration, uncertainty, numbness...), others had also gone through; and made it! The book offers an uncomplicated look at the process of healing after one's dreams are forever changed, and offers hope for a fine future after the trauma of a divorce. I would recommend this book to anyone seriously contemplating, in the midst of, or having survived the divorce process.

        5 out of 5 stars excellent recipes.......2004-10-16

I'm a personal chef in the U.S. and have a client from Nigeria who wanted some West African food. Borrowed this book from the library, have made a few dishes which were delicious, and will make more. Well written and adapted to American cooking techniques (vs some recipes I found on the internet used the same ingredients but were poorly written / difficult to follow.) The best print resource on West African cooking I've found thus far. Am planning to purchase a copy for my own cooking library.

        5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Gift.......2000-05-24

If you are, or you have friends or family who are collectors of exotic cookbooks -- especially African -- then South of the Sahara is a terrific gift! It was my pleasure to receive a copy from the book's publisher to review for my African Cultures site at About.com. In addition to great, authentic West African recipes, the book contains valuable information about the various foods and sources where you may purchase the ingredients called for in West African cooking.

We are Americans residing in Ghana and received this book as a gift-the recipes faithfully recreate the food we find in the markets and chop bars. Its a book we'll carry and use in all our future travels.

This is one of the better cookbooks out there. The instructions were easy to follow during cooking and there is plenty of good information about the ingredients. I liked that there were color photos of a lot of the dishes, as well as a map and pictures of West Africa.

I have been sewing for thirty-five years and have a library of books on embroidery, applique, sewing with fleece, etc. This is one of the best I have found. It covers everything from Applique to Zigzag with full color illustrations and excellent advice. I read it cover to cover and then bought a second copy to give to my sister (I wasn't about to part with mine!)

This is a must-have book for any sewer, quilter, or embroiderer. Every single page is packed with innovative ideas and techniques, each accompanied by a multitude of photos that thoroughly illustrate the processes. I've been a quilter for 15 years, and just started machine embroidering; there were quilting techniques I'd never seen before, and I'm a quilting instructor! They thought of everything and every technique in this book. After just a brief thumb-through of the book my head was spinning with ideas and inspiration! I have well over 400 books in my needlecrafts library, and I can tell already that this is going to be one of my most-referred-to volumes. It's worth 100 times what they're charging for it! I guarantee you'll love it!

Relax--it's not your fault! Dr. Georgia Witkin will help you realize that not all your child's stresses come from home. More to the point, parents can help their kids deal with stress effectively. The initial step is to identify the symptoms. Here the author includes descriptions of symptoms in children's own words; you'll be amazed at just how accurately little ones can describe those feelings we all get during difficult times, from "I get a tight knot in my stomach" to "I start to drum my fingers." Several chapters focus on the sources of stress: family, friendships, school, and a few biggies like death and war. Techniques to deal with stress are presented in simple bullet-point lists, addressing behavioral changes for a variety of troublesome situations. Some techniques, it should be noted, are more helpful than others ("never criticize when angry, only when calm" sounds easy, but try it on the way to the airport with two cranky adolescents at holiday time and you'll see why some suggestions are easier made than put into practice). Most useful are the insights into a child's outward signs of stress, and how to balance parental sympathy with a refusal to be manipulated. Often, open conversation and thorough preparation provide the solutions, just as they do for us stressed-out adults. A practical guide to dealing with life's everyday worries, KidStress can help parents and kids survive stress-filled days peacefully. --Jill Lightner

              Book Description

A media personality and bestselling author of two books on adult stress offers a refreshing, prescriptive approach to helping kids manage the increasing stress in their own lives.

Children today experience more stress and more feelings of vulnerability and anxiety than ever before. But most parents are in the dark about what causes stress in their kids--and even fewer know how to help. Now, Dr. Georgia Witkin, author of The Female Stress Syndrome and The Male Stress Syndrome, offers much needed assistance for anyone coping with the increasing problem of "kidstress." Having asked 800 boys and girls to name the biggest stressors in their lives, Dr. Witkin reveals their often surprising answers. She addresses the symptoms of stress and shows how to tell if a child is "overloaded." And she lays out effective strategies for helping kids help themselves. A much needed resource for anyone battling the symptoms of kidstress, here are the most effective strategies parents can teach their kids for managing the pressures of school, family, peers, the world--everything.

"Witkin offers a fresh viewpoint and sensible, reassuring advice that will be welcome to parents and teachers anxiously picking their way through the minefield of 'kidstress.'"-- Publishers Weekly

              Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Why should parents help kids get over stresses they have caused in the first place?.......2006-08-01

Rather, parents should eliminate the unwarranted stresses they are responsible for.

The author writes, "You've gotten over the breakup, and so have your children."

Could any statement be more ridiculous? OF COURSE, the children haven't gotten over the breakup. They won't "get over" it either.

Rather than tell parents to NOT DATE until the kids are grown and out of the house, the author encourages parents to just go out and do whatever the hell they want - to hell with what is good for the kids and their relationship with the kids.

I rate this book as a minus 2. The author treats these issues like families really live like the Brady Bunch. Silly, fluffy advice for airheads.

Herbert Block, or Herblock, as he is more commonly known, has been an editorial cartoonist for the Washington Post since 1945. A Cartoonist's Life reproduces 250 of his best cartoons from those years (along with some from his earlier stints in Chicago and Cleveland), skewering politicians from Hoover and FDR to Clinton and Gingrich. Herblock also offers his candid reflections on life in the newspaper trade, rubbing shoulders with the people he drew, including the evaluation offered by Lyndon Johnson at a White House reception: "Oh, he'll come over and eat your cookies, but then he'll go back and draw a cartoon giving you hell the next day."

Herblock's always been willing to choose giving the objects of his criticism hell over the easy laugh, as many of the grimmer cartoons on subjects like antigun control lobbyists and the Bosnian conflict attest. The paperback edition includes added material going up to July 1998 addressing campaign finance reform, the unfinished war in Iraq, and the political showdown between President Clinton and independent prosecutor Kenneth Starr.

              Customer Reviews:

              1 out of 5 stars Herblock: Two-Fisted Hypocrite.......2004-01-16

Always expect to find socialist garbage whenever you stumble upon a Herblock book (including this one). Herblock does not just use satire when demeaning his (mostly all Republican) targets, he spews hatred and leftist propaganda into his cruddy drawings (which progressively got worse and worse- his 90s artwork is basically a butcher job). Herblock never noted (or ignored) the acomplishments made by his most frequent presidential targets Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixion and Ronald Reagon, successes that should have satisfied his liberal taste. Eisenhower presided over a decade of economic growth and growing social awareness of Civil Rights (highlighted by his decision to send troops to enforce racial integration at Little Rock, High School). Instead he bashes the President as a do-nothing conservative. Ronald Reagon's administration succeeded in terminating the Cold War without any nuclear action commited by both the Russians and the U.S., a resolution Herblock, judging on his cartoons on the issue, would have approved. Instead, he bashes Reagon as some ignorant right-wing extremist. Then we come to Nixion...certainly he deserved to be a punching bag for Watergate, but here Herblock recklessly attacks Nixion with more vigor than the cartoons he drew mocking Hitler earlier in his career. I wonder how Herblock would feel when he found out Nixion was actually quite a liberal president; he signed bills approving affirmative action, equal rights for women and environmental preservation (even Micheal Moore confessed recently in his new book that Nixion was our last liberal president). More disgustingly, Herblock treated virtually all democratic presidents with kid gloves! FDR is portrayed as a saint in Herblock's cartoons, despite the fact that under his administration, more blacks were lynched or were victims of mob violence than any period under Republican leadership (he didn't even issue a pardon for the innocent Scottsboro Boys). And the Block basically kissed JFK's ass throughout his presidency. There's one cartoon where it's just Kennedy explaining to a reporter how a war room was used to track the whereabouts of his rambunctious family members. No joke, just a cute piece clearly sucking up to the Kennedies. Nope, Herblock never made any cartoons assailing the president for his Bay of Pigs invasion, his dragging on Civil Rights and his decision to escalate the war in Vietnam, but I'm sure he would have if he was a Republican. Even worse, Herblock uses every cliche to push his socialist agenda, like drawing pathetic looking homeless urchins begging for food while capitalists with dollar signs in their eyes bask in their riches. I could go on, but let's just conclude by saying that Herblock's cartoons would be funny for entirely different reasons if it wasn't for the seriousness of his wacko ideaology.

5 out of 5 stars Now more than ever / Not Since Walt Kelly.......2001-10-11

The single finest political cartoon image of a politician and the winner of our national "gut feeling" awareness award goes to Herblock's Richard Nixon rising from a casket with his dracula cape, fangs and 5 o'clock shadow just below the hands holding the wooden stake and mallet.

No, Nixon was still alive and kicking when Herblock did that commentary. He was trying to become an "elder statesman" and given his political history of rising from oblivion -- Herblock had him and us dead square.

Walt Kelly (Pogo) and Herblock were the seminal political cartoonists of the middle of the century. They are missed.

This -- all too short -- book covers the only a few highlights out of a 50 year career. Buy the book. Herblock is gone, but his insights will not fade.

Herblock is old and in the way. His cartoons are not funny, are of low professional skill and epitomize the cheap shot of politics. Katherine Graham thought they were funny, I'm sure there are people who agree with Herblock's cartoons. This goes to show it takes all kinds and that poor taste will always be with us. Probably the poorest (best) example of Herblock's "art" was his memorial cartoon to Katherine Graham. It was the most mawkish cartoon I've ever seen and definitely shows how much he deeply appreciated her lack of control of him. The Washington Post would be a far better newspaper and journalistic institution if these two had never existed.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting insights, interesting person.......2000-12-16

The fact that Herblock's cartoons give conservative Republicans indigestion every time they're published should be one reason to buy this book. The fact that Herblock can be equally scathing of Democrats who wimp out on their responsibilities is another. Contrary to the assessment of the overly-partisan reviewer below, I maintain that Herblock is an equal-opportunity gadfly and, as this autobiography shows, one who has led an interesting life both at the Washington Post and away from it. Buy this book and piss off a conservative!

              1 out of 5 stars Herblockhead.......2000-11-28

Herbert Block has been the chief cartoonist for the Washington Post since the latter 1940s, yet viewing his cartoons or reading this autobiography leaves one wondering how he managed to keep that stint for half as long as he has.

Actually, the answer is fairly easy to decifer, yet it has little to do with his drawing. Certainly his talent for drawing has been oversold over the years, as a view at the cartoons on display in this bio indicates - they show a range of sloppiness, ugliness, and a complete lack of humor that is usually the death-knell of cartoonists.

But Herblock, his signature throughout his years, has managed to survive in sizable part due to the tolerance of his newspaper. Second only to the New York Times as the institution imposing a leftist distortion on world an national news, The Washington Post was a natural home for an artist lacking any respect for subtlety or nuance. His cartoons' sloppiness and lack of humor would simply not have gotten the longevity they have were it not for the tolerance of his newspaper.

Making it all the worse is the repetition involved. Block's trademark is the slovenly-looking drawing labeled with idiotically boldfaced capital letters that insult the reader all by themselves. That it is repetition in the service of leftism insults the reader all the more, and as Russ Braley noted in his study of The New York Times, Herblock's cartoons were usually so insulting and bad that they regularly drew reader complaints.

A few choice morsels display Herblock's contempt for reality - a cartoon of a schoolyard of dead children, being surveyed by two smiling National Rifle Association lobbyists; a 1972 cartoon of Vietnamese refugees that falsely blames their fate on American bombing (naturally Block never once showed any interest in the boat people); a few days before the outbreak of the Cuban Missile Crisis is a cartoon showing Kennedy and Khrushchev struggling to keep a nuclear monster in its box - Block should have followed in the ensuing crisis with a cartoon showing himself eating crow for such a wrongheaded display of nonexistent moral equality; a particularly repellent tribute to animator Chuck Jones where the Road Runner is Nicaraguan puppet-dictator Daniel Ortega while Wile E. Coyote is anticommunist Nicaraguan rebels and American backing.

Race relations - as always, with the Republicans as the enemy - were often his ugliest subjects, due in large part to his persistent use of crass black stereotypes, a persistence that says more about Block than about Republicans.

Block is often credited with inventing the term McCarthyism and the focus of his fire was forever Richard Nixon, yet throughout that time Block could never figure out what was going on. That his (and others') anger over Nixon was based not on dirty tricks but on Nixon's success in exposing liberalism's tolerance of treason to Soviet Russia is reality that Block would have effectively satirized had he any respect for truth. Certainly this shows when he blasts the Reagan administration over Iran-Contra yet bends over backwards to create bogus excuses for the Clinton administration's far more serial lawlessness.

Cartoonists like Block are the reason why the state of the art of editorial cartoons has been so frustratingly uneven over the years. He also shows how longevity is not necessarily an accurate gauge of quality.

                        Book Description

November 1944. The British government finally agrees to send a brigade of 5,000 Jewish volunteers from Palestine to Europe to fight the German army. But when the war ends and the soldiers witness firsthand the horrors their people have suffered in the concentration camps, the men launch a brutal and calculating campaign of vengeance, forming secret squads to identify, locate, and kill Nazi officers in hiding. Their own ferocity threatens to overwhelm them until a fortuitous encounter with an orphaned girl sets the men on a course of action -- rescuing Jewish war orphans and transporting them to Palestine -- that will not only change their lives but also help create a nation and forever alter the course of world history.

How this book went under the radar is beyond me! Steven Spielberg should make a movie out of this, and it could be better than "Saving Private Ryan"! This is a true story, of the first official Jewish military fighting unit. It was formed, when the British government, agreed to send 5,000 Jewish volunteers to fight in Europe, during World War II. Let your heart, mind and soul, be put in the place of a Jewish soldier: Millions of Jews being exterminated in the concentration camps, and you aren't allowed to fight back, as a recognized official unit or brigade. Now your chance comes! This book, first delves into the different types of men in this group. The feeling of helplessness, even after being approved and organized, because they're kept away from the main fighting. I was deeply impacted, as I was told, that no on, had ever worn the Star Of David, on a military uniform before. What a wonderful contrast, to the Star Of David being put on all the Holocaust victims sleeves, as a means of humiliation. When the war ends, this Jewish Brigade, decides not to stop! They continue to go after Nazi officers in hiding, and people who stole Jewish citizen's artwork and valuables. Two individual scenes, brought pride to my chest, and tears to my eyes. One was when, two of the Brigade, finally tracked down one of the Germans, who had performed various atrocities against the Jews, and one member of the Brigade, said to the war criminal: "In the name of the Jewish people, I sentence you to death!" The other scene, was when members of the Brigade, came to the gates of a concentration camp, and the skeletal survivor's in pajamas, stood looking at them, and did not speak. One soldier said, "Don't be afraid" in Yiddish. "The survivors still did not speak" "The soldier felt guilty-of his health, his strength, his good fortune, to have been spared." "He tried again, "We're Jews," he said. "Confused, a man pointed to the Star Of David on the soldier's sleeve, and asked hesitantly, "You're Jewish angels?" I could not put this book down, and have tried to think of a million different reasons, why no one has made this into a movie. I bought the book for my son, who, with starting a new family, and a new job, doesn't have time to read. But after starting this book, he read it every morning before work, and at lunch, and finished it in a week. I bought a copy and sent it to my brother, who is the busiest guy I know. He never has time to read. He read it in a week, and then passed it on to an older gentleman where he works. I sent a copy to one of my best friends; he finished it in a week. We all still discuss, and quote this book today, and I read it over three years ago!

It is excellently written. A true story. You do not want to let go.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling true account .......2006-07-29

Howard Blum has written a compelling true narrative of a small group of Jewish soldiers who fought the Nazis along side the British Army in WWII. This little known slice of history is conveyed persuasively in The Brigade.

Blum discovered this small piece of history by accident when visiting the US Holocaust Museum. After he pulled together scores of interviews, he chose to tell the story through the eyes of three soldiers and one survivor, the sister of one of the soldiers. This telling is what gives this book its potency.

The strength of The Brigade is that it reads as a novel, and the reader cannot turn the pages fast enough to find out what happens next. Blum's accurate portrayal and attention to details is what keeps us focused on the reality of this amazing story of courage and perserverance. He reminds us through his excellent storytelling that this did happen.

The book is not another war novel that expounds on the accounts of military victories. It shows the sacrifices and the souls of these men who risked their lives to save their people. It reveals their struggles and their doubts as well as their triumphant spirits.

The Brigade is a must read. It is uplifting and demonstrates the human spirit at its best.

5 out of 5 stars Jewish troops who fought the Nazi's then rescued 1000's of orphan children.......2006-07-03

I met Howard Blum at a book signing at the JCC in West Bloomfield, Michigan. He was there for his book "The Eve of Destruction". He is an amazing story teller and has a powerful story to tell. This story is told thru the eye's of three men and a woman, Israel Carmi, Johanan Peltz, and Arie Pinchuk, Leah Pinchuk. The British in almost a regretfully way allow a Jewish Brigade to be raised from voluteer's from Palestine. A brigade of 5000 troops who fought the Nazi's in the Italian campaign. These brave men then take on another mission. Their most important mission in their lifes, rescueing Jewish orphan children. These troops stationed in Europe after the conflict were privately hunting down war crinimal's when almost by accident they rescued a ophan Jewish girl. Darkness had almost consumed these men in the never ending spiral of death when God stepped in and handed them the orphan girl.
"The more he killed in cold blood, the more he ensured that the horror the Nazis had let loose would continue to triumph. His only hope was to make a movement away from this ruinous faith. And now he knew what he had to do. For the first time he started to envision the beginnings of a plan, an active strategy, that brought with it the possibility of a world beyond all the evil."
Now you would think this would not be such a difficult problem, however the British were determined not to allow any more Jewish refugee's into Palestine!
A thrilling true story that will keep you in suspense till then end! This was a little known unit that contributed so much to humanity.

5 out of 5 stars Am Israel Chai.......2006-04-28

This a compelling true story in which anyone who reads it will be swept up.
It is about three men , Israel Carmi , Jochanan Pelz and Arie Pinchuk, who form the Jewish Brigade , a division of Jewish soldiers from Israel, in the British army-"the first official Jewish fighting force since the fall of the Judea to the Roman legions". At the time when Jews are being victimized and lead like sheep to the slaughter , the Jewish Brigade , with a yellow Star of David emblazoned to their uniform , fighting for the Jewish people , and their homeland of Israel, shows the world that Jews can fight back and win.
It also tells the remarkable story of Arie Pichuk's sister Leah , and her escape from the Nazis , surviving as a fugitive in the Ukraine , before joining the anti-Nazi Partisans.
After the war , the men witness first hand what the Nazis have done to their people, and set off on a course of identifying , finding and killing Nazi officers who have participated in the holocaust.
Their hatred and ferocity threatens to overwhelm them , until a chance encounter with an orphaned Jewish girl sets them on a more constructive course-smuggling Jewish boys and girls into Israel, despite the British blockade which tires to prevent Jews from entering the ancient homelnd from which they where forced out by the Romans two thousand years before.
It is therefore a true narrative about the re-establishment of the State of Israel , where Jewish children can grow up insafety and live as free men and women , in a free homeland of their own.
That is Zionism , which has been so maligned by evil forces , who want the Jews to fall pray to genocide again.
Every descent person , Jew or Gentile , needs to dedicate themselves to ensuring that Israel survives as a Jewish State in which Jews can live freely and safely.
Anything else will guarantee another holocaust.
Israel and the Jewish people are faced with the same genocidal hate today , that the Jews where faced with during World War II
Our heroes play a role in defending Israel after the fledgling state is attacked by five Arab armies , hellbent on genocide.
                        Am Israel Chai.
                        The People of Israel live!
