A great leader but a very EVIL man.......2005-09-06
Wow, I never knew the human side of Hitler. He was a wiz with names and always took the time to pick out special presents for people's birthday. I think he is probably one of the most evil men who ever walked the planet. But he had some great leadership qualites, how else could this man rise from nothing to a man who lead a nation to unspeakable evil. Worth the read.
Adolf Hitler!.......2000-05-01
Adolf Hilter, a fascinating yet despised man of his times would be a hero to many, but a murderer to some. He has had the courage to lead thousands upon thousands of women, men, and children. He has changed my way of thinking and probably others who thing of Hitler as their hero.

The Hitler Book: The Secret Dossier Prepared For Stalin From The Interrogations of Hitler's Personal Aides
ASIN: 0755311485 |
Book Description
As a soldier in the first World War, Adolf Hitler never rose above the rank of lance corporal, and before that, he had been an impoverished drifter. Yet within months of the war’s end, he had embarked on a path that was to lead Europe into years of conflict, terror, and the Holocaust. In The Man Who Invented Hitler, David Lewis pinpoints what he believes were the key events in his transformation. He documents the fact that Hitler emerged from the war with hysterical blindness, not blindness from mustard gas poisoning, as commonly believed. Hitler was treated by the controversial psychiatrist Edmund Forster, whose methods included telling patients that only the strength of their will and personality could bring them recovery. Once Hitler found that by sheer will he could cure his own blindness, the next step was obvious to him.

The making of evil.......2004-10-18
What are the causes of evil? Why do some people commit
evil acts? What is evil? Does evil always carry
within itself its own destruction?
These are eternal questions. And questions that we as
a society must be able to answer, if we are ever to see
an improvement of the human condition.
The rise and fall of the Third Reich and Adolf Hitler is
a case story of evil. But all too often the intricacies of WW2 battles and details of Holocaust crimes overshadows the psychology of the people and leaders involved in this the most epic of wars.
With his new book David Lewis tries to correct this by giving
us the psychology of the man who was to be known as the Fuhrer.
Raised in a family with a distant and unloving father,
the young man becomes an orphan after having watched his mother die in agony. Hitler then travelles to Vienna where he soon
joins the ranks of the down and out. Sees his artistic dreams
squashed and eventually welcomes war as a salvation
from the hell he finds himself engulfed in.
All of this we have heard before -
surely the seeds of evil are there, but still there is a mystery:
In ww1 Hitler never rises above the rank of corporal and never
shows any leadership potential. Then after ww1 the former outcast suddenly has a purpose in life and an iron will to make all his dreams come true. Before the war he is without the will
to make anything happen except being down and
out in Vienna on his own. After the war he eventually rises to the position of absolute ruler of Germany.
Surely ww1 did something to Adolf Hitler. But
this books offers more - the tantalizing new theory that the psychopathology of post ww1 Adolf Hitler was also the result of psychiatric treatment for hysterical blindness gone horriblely wrong. That the doctor who was supposed to cure Hitler for his illness after (the supposed) gas attack, actually pushed him further in the direction of megalomania and world conquest.
I suppose the theory is still speculation, and I am not sure
that it actually adds that much to the picture of the causes of evil that we have already.
But the book makes it plausible that evil was not cured by doctor, but made worse by a doctor.
Thats pretty stunning stuff.

Book Description
Our universe can be described mathematically by a simple model developed in 1922 at Petrograd (St. Petersburg) by Alexander Friedmann (1888-1925). Without the benefit of observational evidence, Friedmann predicted that the whole universe would expand and evolve with time. This astonishing prediction was confirmed seven years later by Edwin Hubble. Its originator, unfortunately didn't live to savor this triumph. This vivid biography of an outstanding scientist sets his life and work against a wide backdrop of the history of cosmological studies and its major players, such as Einstein and others. The book is a window on Friedmann's school and university years, military service, and teaching and research during a seminal period of Soviet history. The authors include unique archival material, such as Friedmann's letters from the Russian Front, as well as contemporary records and reminiscences of colleagues. There is a detailed treatment of his work in theoretical cosmology (1922-1924), set in the context of the organization of Soviet science at the time.

Check the publishing date before ordering..........2007-03-08
Let me start by saying this book has been a big help in my diet. However, I did not realize just how old the book was. It does not have many of the latest food obviously. I would have gotten a newer book if I noticed the publishing date.
Too old to be of any use.......2007-01-20
Almost nothing in this book is current enough to be helpful. You are much better off using the online sites of the food manufacturers and restaurants and, if necessary, doing the math to figure out how the carbs, proteins, and fats translate into food exchanges.
Don't waste your money.
Newly revised?.......2003-01-27
If you are on some kind of Healthy plan and are thinking of using this book to help you plan your eating when you are not at home, think again. The last revision of the book was in 1991 and several of the Restarurants and Brands listed no longer exist. Of those that do, watch out. This book includes listings for menu items which no longer exist, or which were changes within the last few years.
Unless this book is updated, this is not a good resource.
Good reference book!.......2001-10-02
I found this book to be very helpful in finding the exchanges for various foods. I wish it would have been a bit smaller in actually dimensions (like a paperback book), but other than that it is extremely helpful.

Customer Reviews:
A must have!.......2007-05-14
Our group of 6 is going to the Boundary Waters for the first time and to save money, it was decided that we would dehydrate our food, etc. -- a rather daunting task since I would be the one doing it. After speaking with experienced trekkers, my goal was to create the best meals I could with the least amount of weight, as well as ease of preparation in the wilderness. This book was indispensible! Not only did the author have alot of recipes, but she also had examples of how to determine amounts, plan menus, etc. It would be nice if it was updated, however, because I couldn't find some of the ingredients listed. Also, there are many ingredients that I found on my own to be really helpful -- like maple syrup granules in a health food store.
Good grub.......2004-01-31
My sisters and I have used this as our bible for the last 15 years or so when we head to the Boundary Waters or the Quetico for a week of wilderness canoeing. "Superb meals" are indeed what you get! A couple of our favorites are the Spaghetti Carbonara and the Vegetable and Ground Beef Stew, but there are lots of other recipes to suit every taste. Although several of us have invested in dehydrators now, the directions for drying food using the oven are really good too. The jerky recipe could use a little more seasoning, but as with all cookbooks, one's own taste eventually dictates minor alterations. This is a great book for anyone who wants to lighten their load on the trail without sacrificing quality and taste. I'm so glad it was reprinted in 2002!
The Best Advice and Meals for the Trail!.......2000-09-28
Gretchen McHugh provides practical advice and guidelines on dehydration, equipment and meals for the backpacker who enjoys eating. The instructions and recipes are clear and easy to follow. Best of all, the results are very tasty! As a Trail Coordinator and Section Leader for the Florida Trail (alton2@mediaone.net), I highly recommend this book.
The Only Trail Cookbook you'll ever NEED!.......2000-04-05
I bought this for my Appalachian Trail hike and the recipies and techniques work every time! I'll never have a boring meal on the trail again! It tells you step buy step how to prepare and package your food before you hike to elminate cooking time and weight....it's the best of all worlds!
Invaluable. Wore out library copy-had to buy my own........1999-08-03
Am an Appalachian Trail section maintainer. This was the best "gear" purchase I ever made. I really did almost wear out the local library's copy.

Book Description
This book challanges America's traditional hospital based birth system, the system which has placed the United States at the bottom of the list of industrialized nations with regard to healthy babies and healthy mothers. Dr. Eisenstein explains that birth, for the majority of women, may even be safer without the routine hospital procedures: electronic fetal monitoring, episitomy, iv's, epidurals, etc.
Customer Reviews:
Homefirst is Awesome!!.......2006-09-18
I haven't actually read this book, but I had a home birth through Doctor Eisenstein's "Homefirst". It was totally awesome! Yes there is medical equipment there just in case, but unlike how some of the other reviewer assume, it is nothing like the hospital. I never even saw any of the instruments except for the battery powered doppler, the scale that is used to weigh the baby, and the IV that I had to have (see below). You take all of it home in a sealed box (couldn't weigh more than 10 lbs) a month before your due date. That's it.
Yes, midwives are a good choice also, but personally, I felt more comfortable knowing that just in case, there was a doctor there. I had to be on IV antibiotics during the birth because I tested positive for Group Strep B bacteria (1 in 5 women do). I'm not sure if I could have even done a homebirth with a midwife because of that.
Anyway, don't knock physician attended home births unless you know what you are talking about.
Glad this book exists.......2006-09-01
I'm glad there is one more book that states with no uncertainty that homebirth is a safe and effective option for women, but I don't like some of the ways Eisenstein states his involvement. For example, I think the mother is the only one who delivers a baby -- everyone else just attends, no matter their role in doing so. I suppose that's why I chose a midwife to deliver at home rather than a doctor. Despite my criticism, however, this book may be good for women interested in homebirth to share with others in their lives so they can be convinced it's right.
Love Dr Eisestein!.......2005-01-29
I was a patient of the Home First practice in 2000. Dr Eisenstein did not attend my birth (another equally wonderful Doctor from the practice, as well as a midwife and a nurse attended me), but I did have many conversations with him on the telephone that made a lasting impression on me of what a wonderful, caring man he is!
My homebirth experience was WONDERFUL! I had my first baby in the hospital and it was a really traumatic experience for both myself and my daughter filled with unnecessary interventions. My home birth was safe, calm and perfect! :) Though they had some equipment in case of an emergency, I was not hooked up to an IV or any monitors and was allowed to do as I wished during labor - a really big change from my hospital experience where I was "told" what I could and could not do.
I have since had one more wonderful home birth with my 3rd child and am now in my 33rd week of pregnancy with my 4th child who will also be born at home. I do not live in the Chicago area any longer, so will be delivered by midwives who have given me care that is definately comparable to my home first experience! Once you've had a homebirth, it really is almost impossible to even consider doing it any other way.
A great read and a wonderful medical practice!
Perhaps I am biased...........2005-01-08
I myself was delivered at home by Dr. Meyer Eisenstein back in 1981. He was also at the homebirth of my older brother in 1977. There was no question in my mind that I wanted to have my second child at home (my first was born a month premature so homebirth was not an option) using the services of Homefirst (Dr. Eisenstein's homebirth practice). Yes, they do bring a lot of medical equipment JUST IN CASE it is needed. I wanted a homebirth because I wanted to have a natural birth in the comfort of my own home surrounded by my loved ones and have no medical interventions. This is exactly what I got. It was the best experience of my life and I felt safe knowing that *IF* something went wrong the Dr. had the necesary equipment on hand. (There is a detailed list in the book as to exactly what the Dr. will bring). I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone interested in homebirth.
Homebirth Advantage.......2003-11-17
This book is great. It does exactly what it is intended to do, give the history of PHYSICIAN attended homebirth. As for the comment that they bring the hospital to you, there is absolutely nothing wrong with coming to a birth prepared. Would you rather have your provider say later, "I'm so sorry, I wish we had brought..." or "Thank God we brought..." It is not as if they routinely use that equipment but rather have it if they need it.

Description:
Whether environmental regulations alter capital flows remains a hotly debated issue. This paper uses county-level data to examine the location decisions of domestic and foreign firms in a single empirical model and tests for asymmetries by firm origin in the degree to which capital flows are influenced by environmental standards. We find that while domestic firms are influenced by environmental regulations, foreign firms are not. Since the benefits of foreign investment are well-documented-foreign plants typically provide more jobs and increase local wages by more than domestic plants-this result suggests a double-dividend is available: foreign plants provide an economic stimulus and are not unduly influenced by environmental protections.

Book Description
John La Gerche managed the Ballarat-Creswick State Forest in the late nineteenth century. His pioneering work - he was one of the first generation of foresters in Victoria - helped shape today's forested landscape around the Central Victorian goldfields town of Creswick, the 'home of forestry'.
The survival of La Gerche's Letter Books and Pocket Books allows us a rare insight into a bailiff-forester's work in the 1880s and 1890s. Angela Taylor's delightful text will interest environmentalists and historians as well as those interested in conservation and landscape heritage. It will also make an excellent gift.

Nominated for a 1998 National Book Award for Young People's Literature, No Pretty Pictures: A Child of War is Anita Lobel's gripping memoir of surviving the Holocaust. A Caldecott-winning illustrator of such delightful picture books as On Market Street, it is difficult to believe Lobel endured the horrific childhood she did. From age 5 to age 10, Lobel spent what are supposed to be carefree years hiding from the Nazis, protecting her younger brother, being captured and marched from camp to camp, and surviving completely dehumanizing conditions. A terrifying story by any measure, Lobel's memoir is all the more haunting as told from the first-person, child's-eye view. Her girlhood voice tells it like it is, without irony or even complete understanding, but with matter-of-fact honesty and astonishing attention to detail. She carves vivid, enduring images into readers' minds. On hiding in the attic of the ghetto: "We were always told to be very quiet. The whispers of the trapped grown-ups sounded like the noise of insects rubbing their legs together." On being discovered while hiding in a convent: "They lined us up facing the wall. I looked at the dark red bricks in front of me and waited for the shots. When the shouting continued and the shots didn't come, I noticed my breath hanging in thin puffs in the air." On trying not to draw the attention of the Nazis: "I wanted to shrink away. To fold into a small invisible thing that had no detectable smell. No breath. No flesh. No sound."
It is a miracle that Lobel and her brother survived on their own in this world that any adult would find unbearable. Indeed, and appropriately, there are no pretty pictures here, and adults choosing to share this story with younger readers should make themselves readily available for explanations and comforting words. (The camps are full of excrement and death, all faithfully recorded in direct, unsparing language.) But this is a story that must be told, from the shocking beginning when a young girl watches the Nazis march into Krakow, to the final words of Lobel's epilogue: "My life has been good. I want more." (Ages 10 to 16) --Brangien Davis
Book Description
The beloved Caldecott Honor artist now recounts a tale of vastly different kind -- her own achingly potent memoir of a childhood of flight, imprisonment, and uncommon bravery in Nazi-occupied Poland. Anita Lobel was barely five when the war began and sixteen by the time she came to America from Sweden, where she had been sent to recover at the end of the war. This haunting book, illustrated with the author's archival photographs, is the remarkable account of her life during those years. Poised, forthright, and always ready to embrace life, Anita Lobel is the main character in the most personal story she will ever tell.Anita Lobel was barely five years old when World War II began and the Nazis burst into her home in Krakow, Poland, changing her life forever. She spent the days of her childhood in hiding with her brother--who was disguised as a girl--and their Catholic nanny in the countryside, the ghetto, and finally in a convent where the Nazis caught up with her. She was imprisoned in a succession of concentration camps until the end of the war. Sent by the Red Cross to recuperate in Sweden, she slowly blossomed as she discovered books and language and art. Since coming to the United States as a teenager, Anita Lobel has spent her life making pictures. She has never gone back. She has never looked back. Until now.

Wonderfully riveting Holocaust story. Life affirming!.......2006-02-27
This book is a tragic adventure. Anita Lobel recalls the arrival of the Nazis and the end of her childhood as she knew it. I was thankful this book was a fast read, the suspense of what would happen to Lobel and her brother was too much at times. The writing is beautiful and appropriate for young readers as well as adults. Beautiful photos.
A Deadly Game of Hide-and-Seek.......2006-02-13
Imagine playing hide-and seek, but you are hiding from the German Nazis because you are illegal. Every time they get close to you, a new hiding spot must be found, or your life will be put on the line. During the Holocaust, young Hanusiu played by these rules everyday. Told from a child's point of view, No Pretty Pictures is the memoir of Anita Lobel, earlier called Hanusiu, and her journey through the secrets, tears, and sacrifices of the Holocaust. Ms. Lobel did an amazing job describing everything that happened to her in those fatal years. One part that held excruciating description was when Hanusiu was forced into her first Concentration Camp. I felt as though I was walking into the camp alongside Hanusiu. The other prisoners, barracks, nervousness, and overall feeling of pain were expressed in a way that I cannot believe was seen through a child's eyes. Another major event that took place was when Hanusiu was diagnosed with tuberculosis after she had been rescued. She was forced to stay in a sanatorium for about a year and a half to cure the chronic disease. I could feel her hope and insecurities as each day passed, knowing that she might never get out. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a clear picture of what happened during the Holocaust, supported with lots of description, and seen through a true survivor's eyes.

Book Review
The sad and hard story of Anita, she lived in Poland. To start off the sadness in the beginning Anita her brother and the rest of the family were almost caught by the Nazi's buy they hid, they were sadly robbed of almost all there possessions. They had finally had to leave there house and go to the ghetto. They say, "The word ghetto was only a word to them", I think that means that they had never thought of leaving and going into the ghetto, it was like shock. They try to convert into Catholics by their first communion but it was said back then that a Jews sin is far worse than a Catholics. This was bad and times were getting tighter (the Germans were catching on to them). They were finally captured and taken to a camp where they had to work with low food and march a lot. They stayed there for many years and started to lose there hopes especially when there niania (there nanny) died after being
beaten. Luckily though out of all of the thousands of people were caught many Red Cross busses had come to take them away from the Nazi's and into Sweden. But now she has moved to America and when somebody asked where she's from she will always say, "I am an American and proud of it". This book was very well written but didn't have to much detail on the backgrounds of there lives.
No Pretty Pictures.......2005-04-04
Anita was a normal child but never really lived a normal child hood. She and her brother both were jewish. They were on the run and hiding with their christan nanny. The story of survival is one of the most tragic times: the holocaust. This story is sad yet will keep you on your toes and thinking about what these people had to do to survive. I would recommend this story to anyone who likes to read about the past and enjoys stories of survival. I ejoyed it very much and hope all future readers will too.
