    Book Description

This is the first book-length study of the ideological foundations of British imperialism in the twentieth century. Drawing on the thinking of imperial activists, publicists, ideologues, and travelers such as Lionel Curtis, John Buchan, Arnold White, Richard Jebb and Thomas Sedgwick, this book offers a comparative history of how the idea of imperial citizenship took hold in early twentieth-century Britain, and how it helped foster the articulation of a broader British world.

      Book Description

"A Question of Belonging" is Ernst Beier's modern odyssey of loss and survival in the maelstrom of World War Two. Beier was from an affluent German Jewish family; he escaped to America just before Hitler's Nazi juggernaut closed the borders and he lost contact with the first great love of his life. Beier earned a college degree ina year and one-half and joined the U.S. Army. He fought his way back across Europe, eventually becoming an interpreter for the U.S. Army. All the while Beier used Goethe's "Faust," (which he had virtually memorized) as a talisman and a guide. After the war, Beier returned to the United States and earned a doctorate in psychology. He went on to a distinguished academic career, first at Syracuse University and then at the University of Utah. Ernst Beier's memoir is an epic search for place in a shattered world and a stunning testament to the human spirit. Category: World War/ Two/ Holocaust/ memoirs

      5 out of 5 stars Where do I belong?.......2005-04-01

Ernst was a secular Jew, a youth who considered himself a German, not a Jew. He and his family barely escaped the horror of Nazi Germany, came to the United States, where Ernst completed a college degree in two years and joined the U.S. Army. As an expert skier he wanted to be in the 10th Mountain Division, but was assigned instead to an intelligence unit in the 3rd Army.
His life takes a nasty turn when he is captured by the German Army at the Battle of the Bulge. He and other American soldiers are taken back to Germany to a POW camp. There a Gestapo officer becomes suspicious that he may be a native German Jew and interrogates him for 11 hours.
How Ernst escapes death and survives this interrogation is one of the most gripping stories ever. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Well written memoir.......2003-06-09

A gripping and well written memoir by a Jewish man who barely escaped Nazi Germany, only to join the American Army and then be captured by the Germans and almost discovered and killed, this book is hard to put down. The author interweaves quotes from Goethe in an imaginative and evocative style. I recommend it highly.

          Description:
This paper emerges from a current research project that examines the relationship between contemporary English rurality and notions of identity and belonging. While this is primarily a methodological narrative we argue that this narrative speaks to an analysis of current rural relations. The paper concerns itself with two key methodological issues that have arisen during the 'doing' of the research. First, it examines our own relationship, as 'outsider', urban-based researchers, to the rural and the use and/or relevance of our biographies as resources for making ourselves seem less 'strange' and for accessing, and being in, rural environments. At the same time as providing us with a map into our micro rural worlds the paper draws on this biographic-research relation in order to problematize notions of homogenous rural identities and polarized rural/urban identities. The second part of the paper argues that who we were/how we were perceived had a relation to what 'truths' and accounts we were told by our respondents. More particularly, we show how our use of focus group interviews had a direct role in the rehearsal and presentation of these 'truths'. Given the current contestations and tensions over what and who 'the rural' is, it was clear that those involved in the focus group discussions wanted to give us particular stories that often fell into a consensus pattern of either 'rural idyll' or 'rural crisis' narratives. Drawing on Simmel's notion of the stranger and focus group data we argue that for these narratives to be told we, as researchers, were ascribed by the group members to shifting positions of intimacy and remoteness.

                              Book Description

With its own aromas and delights, as well as a host of health bene?ts, including enhancing immune system function and lessening damage from free radicals, green tea continues to grow more popular in American diets. Yet because it is brewed differently, and many varieties of green tea are available, there is more to know about making a good cup of green tea than how to boil water.

The Green Tea User’s Manual leaves no leaf unturned, introducing 16 of the most popular types of green tea, including Dragon Well, Sencha, Jasmine, and the Japanese tea Gen Mai Cha. It describes the three stages of bubbles to look for when boiling water and the various vessels in which to brew, from pots to small covered cups known as guywans. Lovely line drawings, original recipes, anecdotes, lore, and related green tea tips help to make this irresistible little book a perfect gift for anyone with a penchant for tea.

                              5 out of 5 stars Helen's done a wonderful job!.......2004-06-02

This little book on green tea is written by an experienced, well, maybe professional I should have said, tea drinker and pratitioner in the US. You will get lots of information on this little book. It will turn you into a *knowledgeable* tea drinker overnight.
Helen gives a brief survey on the popular and finer green teas as well as on tea preparations and teawares... It would be a great pleasure to read. However, I wish she would make the description more elaborate. For example, if she could give a more detailed description on the Dragon Well, High Mountain (Dong Ding--Cold Summit) OOlong, Bi Luo Chun, ...the finer teas, then a greater pleasure to read.
Also you can find many useful and trustworthy resources from which you order quality teas. I highly recommend this book to any tea lovers as well as anyone who wants to give it a shot to tea!

5 out of 5 stars For tea enthusists interested in venturing into green teas~.......2002-06-25

I wish that more things in life came with a nice, compact, informative manual. :-) I recommend this book to those just beginning their adventure into green teas and also for those who enjoy green tea but don't really know much about finer greens. It starts out by covering the absolute basics like what tea is, how to appreciate it, potential health benefits, brewing basics, etc. I really liked her descriptions of how to brew in a cup/mug, teapot and guywan. Also, she's spot on with infusion baskets. Tea balls or clamp spoons are terrible and she doesn't mind saying so! She then moves on to explore some of the world's most enjoyed green teas from "Gen Mai Cha" to "Yin Hao". She does an excellent job of explaining what to look for in each tea, how to brew them and infuses her personal experiences to further broaden understanding. And, not one to leave it at that, she also talks about tea bags, what to do with spent leaves and liquor, using tea as dye and tosses in some green tea recipes that sound fantastic. I put this book on the shelf right alongside the classic "Tea Companion" by Pettigrew and "The Book of Green Tea" by Rosen. Happy tea drinking!

5 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know about green tea.......2002-05-08

Good, practical advice. Helen even lists green tea by brand name and tells you how to brew each one differently so that each tea's finest qualities are brought out. Read this book and you will be a "green tea expert" in no time.

5 out of 5 stars Something for Everyone.......2002-01-30

Part encyclopedic, part anecdotal, The Green Tea User's Manual has something for everyone. The author writes from personal experience at both ends of the spectrum, which makes for a fascinating way to read a wealth of information. Anyone who enjoys green tea (or black, for that matter) will thoroughly enjoy this little gem.

5 out of 5 stars Green Tea Made Easy.......2002-01-17

I love this little book! Green tea is all the rage, and I keep seeing articles on its health benefits. But it's also a bit of mystery - how to brew it, how to buy it, even what it is (as opposed to black tea). This small but mighty guide explains those mysteries one by one. There's a lot packed in here. The author is an expert - a "tea sommelier" (who knew such a thing existed?). But her tone is unpretentious, encouraging, charming and fun. I would recommend this book to anyone who's interested in exploring green tea but doesn't really know where to start.

This book can serve as a practical guide for helping children through very difficult situations. However, after reading this book you realize it is much more than that. It is the way the author recounts her own experiences, as well as the personal experiences of others, that make for compelling reading.

5 out of 5 stars Shared experiences lend a personal perspective.......2002-04-16

The writer's personal approach makes this an easy and insightful read. Rather than another book full of only "expert" opinions, she has gathered stories from her own family, as well as others, showing how parents and other adults can help children cope with loss. I wish I had had this book last year--it would have helped me understand my teenager's reaction to his grandmother's death. This is one I'll keep on my bookshelf and plan to send a copy to my sister as well.

                                        Book Description

In snapshot pictures of her life, acclaimed "outsider" artist Linda St. John tells the story of her dirt-poor childhood in southern Illinois -- her father's casual brutality and her mother's cruel indifference -- and, finally, through her father's illness, the redemptive power of love. In prose as haunting as it is precise, Even Dogs Go Home to Die is one of the most original, moving, funny, and heartbreaking memoirs of recent years.

Linda St. John is a wonderful talent and tells her remarkable story of surviving a stark upbringing with wit and insight in the package of a really good read. The story moves along. Her characters are tremendously vivid and orginal.

5 out of 5 stars Of Beatings and Beauty.......2001-11-12

The author has taken an artful look at her painful family
background in a way that is amazing. The sincerity and poignant detailing suggest that the author has not borrowed trouble to write about, but does in fact know it very intimately, and has used the power of creativity to rise above and even flourish.
No one can read this book and not be inspired to look with more colorful curiosity at any trouble in their life.
All people in Alcohol and abuse programs would take heart from reading this. This book suggests tools for taking a liberating apprach to life. A beautiful book of love and understanding.

5 out of 5 stars Good readin' Bad spellin'.......2001-09-23

Memoirs of a terrible childhood marred by poverty, alcoholism and abuse in Southern Illinois. Later on the abused children look after their dying father, a WWII veteran with a PhD, and seek his love. These terrible childhoods always make good stories when told by their survivors. The worse the childhood the better the story because we know that the writer survived to become a person who could write a book. It's always a question as to how much is true (I've heard that Frank McCourt's mother was a New York secretary) but this one could stand on its own as fiction. We're given a lot of jacket biography, and even a cover designed by the author, that form an intrinsic part of the story. I share the other reviewers' irritation with the apostrophes on the gerunds but I guess them white trash aint gonna mind that none.

5 out of 5 stars Unusual and memorable.......2001-09-11

This is a harrowing, yet funny, tale of the author's disturbing childhood. It reminded me of THE LIAR'S CLUB but it's unique not only in the way it's told, but in the voice of the author. What I like best is knowing that the author overcame everything she's written about here to go on to a successful career as an artist. Very inspiring.
