John Paul Jones' Memoir of the American Revolution presented to King Louis XVI of France

The revolutionary career of John Paul Jones, which is the subject of this memoir, needs no elaboration here. His voyages, first on the Alfred under Capt. Dudley Saltonstall, and later at the helm of the sloops Providence, Ranger and Ariel, the old East Indiaman Duras (renamed the Bonhomme Richard), and the American-built frigate Alliance are thoroughly recounted here. What is generally not known, however, is the commodore's post-revolutionary war career.

Having made numerous inveterate enemies during the course of the war, both in and out of Congress, Jones had little chance of gaining flag rank in the American navy. Realizing this, he decided in the spring of 1788 to pursue fame in other waters, first in the service of Louis XVI of France and later under Catherine the Great of Russia. France, unfortunately, was in no position to expand its naval staff, but Catherine, who was in need of good officers to fight in the second Russo-Turkish war, offered him an admiral's commission in the Russian navy, and on May 26, 1788, Rear Admiral Jones raised his flag on the Black Sea.

Anyone familiar with the life of John Paul Jones, one of America's most popular naval heroes, would agree that in fighting spirit the commodore was perhaps equal to any officer in the history of the United States Navy. Unquestionably, he was deserving of the belated tribute paid to him by President Theodore Roosevelt on April 24, 1906, at the formal reception at Annapolis of the body of Capt. Paul Jones, as the hero was known at the height of his career. President Roosevelt admonished an audience of naval officers and cadets, statesmen and visiting dignitaries: "Every officer in our Navy should know by heart the deeds of John Paul Jones. Every officer in our Navy should feel in each fiber of his being an eager desire to emulate the energy, the professional capacity, the indomitable determination and dauntless scorn of death which marked John Paul Jones above all his fellows."

Science historian I. Bernard Cohen knew Aiken and tells the whole story in Howard Aiken: Portrait of a Computer Pioneer, both an engaging life story of a unique man and a tale of the rancorous struggle for recognition between strong personalities.

Through Cohen's painstaking research, including exhaustive looks into the archives of Harvard and IBM, interviews with Aiken and other principals, and his own reminiscences, the reader gets a glimpse into the partnership between business, academia, and the military, which, like it or not, propelled us headfirst into the Information Age. We catch a glimpse of how Aiken's self-described "laziness" in graduate school led him to dream of a machine that would ease the burden of complex calculations. From this passivity the development of the Mark I followed between 1937 and 1944, and the never-completely-resolved conflict over inventor's credit.

Cohen is a mild partisan on Aiken's behalf but argues convincingly that subsequent developments in our understanding of computer design moot or at least temper the problem--acknowledging that crucial contributions were made on both sides, he suggests that the problem never would have arisen today. --Rob Lightner

Howard Hathaway Aiken (1900-1973) was a major figure of the early digital era. This biography of Aiken, by a major historian of science who was also a colleague of Aiken's at Harvard, offers a clear and often entertaining introduction to Aiken and his times. Aiken's Mark I was the most intensely used of the early large-scale, general-purpose automatic digital computers, and it had a significant impact on the machines that followed. Aiken also proselytized for the computer among scientists, scholars, and businesspeople and explored novel applications in data processing, automatic billing, and production control. But his most lasting contribution may have been the students who received degrees under him and then took prominent positions in academia and industry. I. Bernard Cohen argues convincingly for Aiken's significance as a shaper of the computer world in which we now live.

a partisan look at Aiken.......2006-07-02

The book is a partisan contribution to a long running skirmish about the dawn of modern computing. To what extent did Aiken influence the design of IBM's first postwar computers? Today, this issue is of interest only to the historians of computing. But Cohen takes us back to those early times. When the basic architecture was being laid down, and not all the implications were fully understood.

It is best to keep that in mind when reading the book. Neither Aiken or IBM's engineers fully understood what they were doing. But we can only say that with the benefit of 60 years hindsight, and a hugely successful computer industry. Certainly, Aiken comes off as visionary. But perhaps Cohen understates IBM's contribution?

Presumably anyone who can afford the $150 to $300 a head it takes to dine at one of Alain Ducasse's restaurants won't blanch at the hefty price tag on this glossy testimonial to the great master's gastronomy. L'Atelier of Alain Ducasse is like an elaborate program you bring home from the opera and may have about as much practical value. In his introduction, Jean-Francois Revel of the Academie Francaise suggests there's a certain pointlessness to even thinking about cooking along the lines of the recipes presented by Ducasse. Revel emphasizes again and again the high quality of the ingredients Ducasse works with, implying that such ingredients by their very nature are out of reach of mere mortal cooks. "In these modern times," Revel writes, "the land is far removed from nature, and nature has found refuge in haute cuisine. For now nature has become too expensive: in the kitchen, as elsewhere, it has become a supreme luxury." So with the caveat that you will never find the special ingredients it takes to make any of these dishes really sing and that the skill level is professional, Ducasse divides his book into sections based on his favorite ingredients: olives and olive oil, asparagus, wheat, the white Alba truffle, bass, turbot, lamb, and lemons and citrus fruits. The recipes have been produced by Ducasse and a handful of his core students including Franck Cerutti, Jean-Louis Nomicos, Sylvain Portay, Jean-Francois Piege, and Alessandro Stratta. Good writing would have carried this book way over the top, but good writing is what it lacks. The essays are wooden, perhaps attributable to translation, and the recipes, of course, are out of reach. Hilarious send-up of human intimate relationships.......2002-12-12

I believe this book was published elsewhere as "Cats are from Venus, Dogs are from Mars" (which would possibly be a better title, as it also sends up John Gray's similarly titled best-seller). It's extremely funny. It isn't really about cats and dogs but rather about women and men and how they relate to one another - using the pets as a kind of allegory. I laughed out loud many times at the wonderful insights; it's got to be healthy for us to be able to laugh at all those wince-making relationship scenarios that we've all experienced.
And as with all good humour, there's much truth here about the human condition and about life - and how to relate. I think you'll enjoy it too...

Jessie Groeschen does an excellent job documenting chainsaw carving from the "Founding Fathers" (and Mothers) to modern day artists. She also includes summaries of some of the more prestigious events in this relatively unknown form of artwork. The biographies also include a plethora of pictures of each artist's works. To top it off the author provides a step by step pictorial to create your own chainsaw art. It would be a great coffee table book for chainsaw enthusiasts, art enthusiasts, and/or Pacific Northwest culture enthusiasts.

Fabulous overview of the field.......2006-01-13

I'm very happy to have this book, to show people who come to see my carvings, to inspire me, and to reinforce the idea that there are as many approaches to carving as there are carvers, and only a few of them involve bears.
The book is excellently produced, with great photos and entertaining text. I have met some of the carvers featured, and it's good to know more of their history and approach to carving.
For the record, there's one step-by-step in the book; Jessie showing how to carve a chair. If you want to learn how to carve, there are other books. But if you want to know why we carve, this is the one.

I am a collector of chainsaw art. My first purchase was back in 1986. I feel I can't have enough carvings. I even own a few pieces by a couple people featured in this book. Knowing some of their story makes it even more meaningful. I enjoyed the book and have it on our coffee table for others to enjoy.

I read this book cover to cover and in my opinion, no other chainsaw carving book allows the reader to feel as though they know the carvers the way that this book does! Jessie does a GREAT job at having the reader identify with the top carvers of our time! I've personally been carving for about two years and through reading about all of the various artists journeys, it has helped me to realize that someday, if I continue to work hard, I could actually meet some of these wonderful people! I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to get started with chainsaw carving! Step by step instructions on several projects and loads of information on chainsaws, sprockets and bars to help you pick the right equipment for the job, technical information etc..
It is one of the best Chainsaw Carving books on the market at this time!

Disappointing: NOT an instructional book!.......2003-10-05

Disregard the comments "until now there has been very little, if any, how-to information for beginners" or "Excellent resource for the beginner" noted in other reviews. They are WRONG! I am a beginner, and after reading this book cover to cover I don't think I am anything more than the same beginner I was when I started. Here's the breakdown of the book:

140 pages total. 60 pages are just color pictures of what I would classify as very advanced carvings and no info or details on how they were made. 28 pages are chainsaw facts, including 9 pages of color chainsaw pictures (no comments or advice on one model vs another, just lots of pictures of chainsaws...big deal). in the remaining 47 pages dedicated to "carving", there are only four actual projects. Of these four, just two have multiple pictures and step-by-step instructions.

For a beginner who is looking to learn this beautiful art, I estimate there about 30 pages of actual content you are interested in. Save your money and look for something else! That's exactly what I'm going to do right after I post this review.

Excellent resource for the beginner, step by step photos take you thru the entire project. Excellent section on tools. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to get into chainsaw carving. Cant wait for his next book

The title is great and seems to indicate that you as a new father can learn something from this book.

I did not find that to be the case. It lacks structure and doesnt present information in an interesting way. The actual information is also scarce and nothing new is added to the "normal" books on this topic. As a new father you will not be much wiser on your new role after reading this book.

I found Christine Harris's books to be much better and would recommend those.

too much misinformation.......2002-03-23

This book is O.K. for people who don't mind being stuck in the system. It discourages or prohibits home birth, sleeping with your baby, and 100% breastfeeding, without a shred of evidence. Of course, not all parents-to-be share the same principles, but it would be more fair for a book that claims to be "for fathers" to present the viewpoints of more than one "type" of father.

Maybe someone can write a better book for fathers later on. It is a good idea.

Useful tool to new fathers!.......1999-12-18

My wife bought me this book a few weeks after we found out she was pregnant. I didn't have a clue about anything and this book really gave me so much useful information that it made the pregnancy and birth of our son so easy for me to handle.We took a parenting class and so much in the class that we leaned I was already familiar with because of this book. I didn't freak out about certain things because I knew what to expect. This book helped me understand the different phases my wife would go through and it allowed me to have a more understanding and patience with things. The delivery was a snap because of what this book prepared me for, along with class.This book is well worth it and I highly recommend it. Don't panic, get the book!

Great idea, but too repetitive, no news, disappointing........1998-11-12

What a great idea, a book for the lads ! Although there is plenty of useful information in here, the style and the endless repetition makes it almost unbearable to plough through. Did the author get paid by the word ? There is also too much arse-covering concerning advice. I couldn't finish it, I went back to Miriam Stoppard. Disappointing !
